Map of global carbon emissions

by Nathan Yau

Fossil fuel fluxes

Using data from the Earth System Research Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Kennedy Elliott for the Washington Post mapped average grams of carbon dioxide worldwide.

As Elliot notes, "Mapping fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions is a lot like mapping population density, because the source of this type of greenhouse gas is caused by human activity and infrastructure." So you can put away that xkcd comic on population density. But check out the shipping routes coming through in the ocean. Pretty neat.

Intel formally announces Knights Landing landed

Intel formally announces Knights Landing landed

DirectX 12 changes things

Chipzilla has formally announced details of its Knights Landing CPU.

Intel first talked about entering the discrete graphics card market several years ago but its Larrabee, coincidently turned out to be, half not be.

It was basically done to death by its poor design and poor software, Intel GPUs just could not render polygons the same rate as AMD or Nvidia. It could manage compute focused tasks, but in the discrete card market few people wanted that sort of thing.

However Microsoft's compute focused DirectX 12 change all that and as it roles out, Intel's technology might get a dusting off. That and the fact that Intel fabs have 14nm engineering samples which could actually match AMD's HD 4890.

So far Intel has not spilt the beans on performance but the press release shows that the basic model of 'Knights Landing' packs a whopping 72 Atom cores operating in parallel at upwards of 1.3 GHz.

This means 3-4 Petaflops of power which is 150 percent more than the Titan Z, possibly more than the AMD 390X.
We will see it in the shops by Christmas when Intel's KN architecture will be up against Nvidia's Pascal and AMD's GCN 3.0

Of the two models, the'Five' models have a standard layout, with a pair of HDMI ports and a dual link DVI port.

However the prototype 'Seven' cards don't output video directly at all, which means that they don't need so much cooling and there is a lot more slot area available to exhaust the blower fan. Knights Landing Sevens will use the latent output capabilities of integrated GPUs through interleaving two reserved PCIe lanes to offload a video stream to the iGPU frame buffer by stack overflow.

According to the press release more than 80 per cent of current enthusiast systems have 'at least one' digital output", but does also mention the planned alternative single-slot 'outboard' with video connectors, in both PCIe and the newest Vesa Localbus flavours.

Finally R2-D2 Gets A Chance to Kick Butt

by Jill Harness

Poor little R2. Not only are his words eternally censored, he's also stuck rolling around on some wheeled legs that are useless in the heat of battle. Now, thanks to Yamaguchi Katuhisa, he can finally live out his fantasies of being the butt-kicking machine he always wanted to be.

It's about time the little droid got to express himself and defend his friends! Of course, leave it to c-3P0 to turn a little robot's dreams into something mildly distrubing.

Forget Totchos and Nugchos; Spamchos are The Ultimate Nacho Hybrid

by J. Kenji López-Alt

Let's face it: If you're eating regular old nachos, if you can't even be bothered to replace those chips with, say, deep fried tater tots, you may as well be chowing down on oatmeal while sipping on prune juice, gramps. Heck, even totchos are about as cool as a day old ramen burger these days. But never fear! There is redemption ahead as I lead you to nachos with a deep injection of piles of pleasure of the porcine persuasion. I present to you: SPAM-CHOS, nachos in their ultimate, meatiest, porkiest, fried-iest form. Read More

Dig that old VCR out of your closet and plug it in. We’ve got a dusty, worn copy of the classic 80s TV show Breaking Bad. The website Stan’s VHS has cassette boxes for television shows and movies that began long after the VHS era was over. Check out similar covers for Guardians of the Galaxy, Game of Thrones, and Gravity:

Let's face it: If you're eating regular old Spamchos, if you can't even be bothered to replace those chips made of deep fried chopped-and-formed spiced ham with something meatier, you may as well be chowing down on oatmeal while sipping on prune juice, gramps. How can I make my nachos meatier than with Spam?, you ask. Never fear!
