You're going to want to watch this PS4 teardown

by Dale North

Sony and Wired invite you for a peek inside the angular next-gen game system known as the PS4. All its innards, including the CPU, GPUs, optical drive, memory, cooling systems and more, are on display in this video. Sony's Yasuhiro Ootori points out each part, piece by piece.

I'm surprised to see how clean and elegant the build is. Everything comes out easily, with no weird angles or hanging connections. The heatsink is particularly lovely.

What do you think?

Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti review

by Dave James

Well, it’s been a busy month for graphics card releases and we’re only seven days into November, but then we always knew Nvidia would be waiting for AMD to release it’s top end cards before issuing their own response, and here it is: the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

And as you would expect, it’s now the fastest graphics card on the planet. But we’re not just talking about taking the single-GPU crown either, the GTX 780 Ti can actually go much faster than the Radeon HD 7990, let alone either the GTX Titan or Radeon R9 290X.

Nvidia have had to bring out their biggest guns for this battle. The original GTX Titan was a bit of shock and awe in order to topple AMD’s Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition from the top of the benchmark tree, the GTX 780 Ti goes even further. Not even Nvidia’s pro graphics card range has used the GPU behemoth inside this card.

Perhaps AMD ought to take this as a bit of a compliment though. Nvidia hasn’t left anything in the tank here, this card represents every bit of power they’ve managed to pull out of the Kepler architecture. Like the GTX 780 and the GTX Titan before it, the GTX 780 Ti is using the GK 110 GPU Nvidia have previously reserved for their professional Tesla graphics card range. It’s a massive, powerful GPU at 533mm2 with over seven billion transistors – the GK 104 used in the original GTX 680 by comparison is relatively svelte at under 300mm2 with half the transistor count.

The Titan used the same chip as the top Tesla K20X card, with 2,688 CUDA cores making it one of the quickest single GPU cards around at the time. That still wasn’t, however, the full-fat GK 110 chip. Both Titan and K20X sport fourteen of the Kepler architecture’s streaming microprocessor (SMX) modules – each with 192 CUDA cores – to make up that 2,688 core count. The full chip though comes out of the fabs with fifteen SMX and some 2,880 cores. Because of the difficulty getting fully functional yields out of the silicon wafers at the top spec the decision was taken to go forward with fourteen. This allowed for chips without the full fifteen functional SMX modules to still make the grade.

But now because of the serious competition from AMD’s Hawaii GPU, Nvidia have had to bring out the big guns. Because the production process is now far more mature than it was a year or so ago I expect the yields on the top chips are much better than they were originally – they’re going to have to be otherwise Nvidia might be taking a bit of a hit bringing the GTX 780 Ti out at this price.

Send all the cores, ALL THE CORES!

Quick chips

What does all that mean for gaming performance then? It means the GTX 780 Ti is faster than AMD’s finest, that’s what. But not by much, if I’m honest. In the synthetic benchmark of Heaven 4.0 it shows Nvidia’s top card has the definitive edge when it comes to raw performance, but in-game – Bioshock Infinite aside – the difference isn’t nearly so pronounced.

Indeed, with Company of Heroes 2 even the second-tier Hawaii, the Radeon R9 290, is still faster than this giant of a GPU.

When you think about the fact Nvidia’s latest card is over £200 more expensive than the R9 290 suddenly all those CUDA cores don’t look so impressive. And when you’re only getting a few frames per second on average more than the R9 290X, the extra £100-odd over the top Radeon doesn’t look worth the outlay at all.

I was quite prepared to admit that while the GTX 780 Ti was indeed the new fastest GPU in the world it was only by such an insignificant amount as to barely be worth bothering about. A good demonstration of speedy Kepler architecture, but not a card I could recommend anyone buy.

Then I started playing around overclocking it. Boy, does this thing shift when you start playing around with the core and memory clocks. And even at the top settings (some 1,254MHz on the GPU if you’re interested) it was still only knocking around 83ºC and with the fans at 67% it only sounded as blowy as the R9 290X itself.

I’ve never seen any card get so close to hitting 50FPS in Heaven’s system-taxing benchmark at 2560×1600, especially not with the minimum frame rate topping 20FPS either. In my experience of basic GPU overclocking, whether DIY or factory-overclocked, most cards will net you an extra 10% performance boost at best. The GTX 780 Ti was boosting gaming frame rates by 16% at the very least, sometimes as high as 23%.

These are important speed bumps when you’re gaming at high resolutions, which is where you want to be when you’re spending £560 / $700 on a graphics card. If you’re plugging this into a 1080p screen only then you’re a mad person.

To really see the best of the GTX 780 Ti you need to overclock

Must-have?

It’s still not got the must-have price/performance metrics of the impressive Radeon R9 290 though. That card is still an absolute bargain for the gaming speeds you can get out of it. And while the GTX 780 Ti at its top overclock does pull away, sometimes quite significantly, from the second-tier Radeon it’s still tough to argue that the extra performance is really worth the extra couple hundred you’ve got to spend on the GeForce card.

For some people it will be though. If you want the absolute best, quickest graphics card on the market right now, and one that still wont burn a hole in the side of your chassis, or deafen you at full speed, then Nvidia have got the card for you. At £560 / $700 it is a premium-priced GPU, but when you consider the GTX Titan is still selling for much, much more, it’s not actually that bad, value-wise. Fingers crossed Nvidia have sorted out the chip yields for GK 110 chips with the full fifteen SMX modules, because I’m pretty confident they could sell an awful lot of these cards. I guess we’ll see what stock levels are like over the next few days.

SimCity going futuristic in Cities of Tomorrow expansion

by Conrad Zimmerman

SimCity is due to receive its first major content expansion next week with the release of Cities of Tomorrow, which introduces a host of new building types like drone factories and air scrubbers. Check out the latest trailer above to see some of the new innovations.

As much as I love SimCity as a series (particularly when it gets all sci-fi on me), the small map size for cities remains a dealbreaker for me. I miss being able to build a truly sprawling metroplex, instead of a whole bunch of smaller, regional cities. I do quite like the conflict they're setting up in this expansion though, which puts corporate and academic innovation at odds with one another in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

If you're down for that sort of thing, Cities of Tomorrow releases on November 12 and can be pre-ordered for $29.99.

Google security engineer on NSA: "Fuck these guys"

by Cory Doctorow

In a heartfelt and personal blog-post, Google security engineer Brandon Downey discusses his feelings on the discovery that the NSA had tapped Google's private fiber links. In three words: "Fuck these guys." But you should read the rest, too.

Fuck these guys.

I've spent the last ten years of my life trying to keep Google's users safe and secure from the many diverse threats Google faces.

I've seen armies of machines DOS-ing Google. I've seen worms DOS'ing Google to find vulnerabilities in other people's software. I've seen criminal gangs figure out malware. I've seen spyware masquerading as toolbars so thick it breaks computers because it interferes with the other spyware.

I've even seen oppressive governments use state sponsored hacking to target dissidents.

But even though we suspected this was happening, it still makes me terribly sad. It makes me sad because I believe in America. Not in that flag-waving bullshit we've-got-our-big-trucks-and-bigger-tanks sort of way, but in the way that you can looked a good friend who has a lot of flaws, but every time you meet him, you think, "That guy still has some good ideas going on".

This is the big story in tech today

Demonoid Will Come Back Soon, Rebuild in Progress

by Ernesto

demonoidAs the single largest semi-private BitTorrent tracker that ever existed, Demonoid offered a home to millions of file-sharers.

This changed abruptly August last year when a series of troubled events took the site offline. When it was still down after a year, many had given up hope that it would ever return.

Today there’s a glimmer of hope to report to estranged Demonoid members, as the site is preparing for a glorious comeback. TorrentFreak contacted the Demonoid team via its demonoid.com email address where the Demonoid team confirmed the plans.

“I can’t give you any specifics at the moment, but yeah, we are planning to bring the site back,” we were told.

A follow-up request, for more details and whether the same people are behind the site, remains unanswered for now. However, a landing page on Demonoid.com and Demonoid.me brings more hope.

“We will rebuild! Coming back soon, please check back later. Thanks for your visit!,” it reads, with a Bitcoin donation option below.

Demonoid coming back?

demonoid-back

It is currently unknown whether the site’s legal troubles are still ongoing.

When Demonoid had its servers taken down by Ukrainian hosting company Colocall last year local authorities explained that Interpol had requested the action as part of a criminal investigation into the site’s alleged owners in Mexico.

Months earlier Mexican authorities had carried out raids in Monterrey, the capital city of the northeastern state of Nuevo León. Their prime target was a Demonoid operator, and one person connected to the BitTorrent tracker was subsequently imprisoned but later released.

At this point TorrentFreak is unable to confirm whether the Demonoid domains are still in the hands of the old crew. Neither do we know if the planned resurrection will be with the old user and torrent database.

Earlier this year the mysterious D2.vu site launched using a copy of the Demonoid user and torrent database. The operator of the spin-off claimed not to be related to the Demonoid owners and thus far the site hasn’t gotten much traction.

The people behind the planned resurrection of Demonoid have access to the site’s original .com and .me domains so there’s a good chance that the site may return fully, backed by part of the old crew.

Time will tell whether that’s the case.

Cipher Prime's pill-popper, Intake, on Steam after hitting Humble Bundle

by Jessica Conditt

Intake has no business being as fun as it is, considering its super-simple premise. I first got a taste of Intake at GDC, during the second annual Indie Press Mixer, where I can state without shame that I had a blast popping pills to some of Cipher Prime's famously sick beats. That's the premise of Intake - split the Dr. Mario-esque pills as they fall from the top of the screen, while ensuring your clicker is tuned to the correct color. Super simple and super addicting.

Intake is out now on Steam, on sale for $9 through November 13. It launched with the Cipher Prime Humble Weekly Sale in October, alongside some of the studio's established games, including Splice, Auditorium, Pulse and Fractal. The bundle ended up selling 41,529 units, studio co-founder William Stallwood tells me.

"It's the best marketing tool we have," he says. "The guys who run Humble Bundle are fantastic. They help us launch and test and are very supportive. If we don't make any money, we still get to feel good - it's for charity."

Besides, Stallwood says, getting on Humble Bundle is a measure of success: "I'm not sure the real value of a Humble Bundle is the money. I would say it's the exposure. It's almost an indie 'you've made it.'" Getting on Steam is also an indicator that a studio is doing something right, and Cipher Prime now has four games there.

South Park hilariously nails everyone's problem with cable companies

by Casey Chan on Sploid, shared by Casey Chan to Gizmodo

Sure, complaining about cable is probably the quintessential first world problem but it's like cable companies get off in screwing you over. South Park captures the cable screw job perfectly: every customer wants changes to be made with cable but every cable company is just enjoying how many different ways they can say no to you.

Introversion sells 250,000+ copies of Prison Architect

by Alasdair Duncan

Whilst there's a degree of understandable cynicism towards selling unfinished games that are still in alpha, it seem like that hasn't stopped the fine folks at Introversion from selling over 250,000 copies of their penal management sim Prison Architect. That's nearly $8 million worth of rubbish canteen meals and dropping-the-soap-in-the-shower action.

Part of the fun of game, for me at least, is not making your prison the most secure of establishments; in the long-standing tradition of making killer rides in RollerCoaster Tycoon or removing all the doors in your house in The Sims, there's a lot of fun to be had in removing a random wall from your prison just to see what happens next.

Considering Introversion was in some financial dire straits before launching Prison Architect, it's reassuring that the game has sold fairly well. After canning Subversion, it seemed like the studio might close its doors. Here's hoping the guys can carry on updating the game in all kinds of fun ways. Personally speaking,  I'm hoping Introversion will add a cryo-prison, just like in Demolition Man. Think of the fun of defrosting a prisoner in 20 years time after they're initially put away!

Watch a tooth get burned to crispy bits

by Casey Chan on Sploid, shared by Casey Chan to Gizmodo

Watch a tooth get burned to crispy bits

Seeing things that shouldn't be burned get melted down to nothing by fire is weirdly titillating. You don't even have to be a pyromaniac to enjoy the perversion of the flames. Just look at how this tooth slowly disappears! It's gross and weirdly wonderful in all the right ways. So bless the master torch wielders of Cars and Water for taking a tooth from their childhood and blasting it with a hydrogen/oxygen flame. I thought I would never know how a tooth burns. Now I'll never smile the same again.

Craig Ferguson to talk with Notch, creator of Minecraft

by Alessandro Fillari

On November 7, Markus "Notch" Persson, will make a guest appearance on the talk show The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

According to Kotaku's Stephen Totilo, Notch will be on the late-night show to discuss his experiences with Minecraft, and the appearance also coincides with the release of the biography about Persson's experiences making the immensely popular game.

Craig Ferguson is well known for having guests from fairly niche backgrounds -- and though Minecraft is not small by any means, and it's certainly a testament to how much Minecraft and this indie developer has grown.

13 Hilariously Wrong Explanations Of How Tech Works From Hollywood

by Kyle Russell

Angelina Jolie Hackers

British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke once wrote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Nowhere is this idea more alive and well than Hollywood, where real technology is explained away in a series of buzzwords that make about as much sense as the almost-Latin gibberish used to cast spells in everyone's favorite fantasy worlds.

For those with a technical background, watching shows or films where technology plays a pivotal role can be a cringe-inducing experience.

The opening scene of 1995's 'Hackers' is one of the first examples of Hollywood showing computer infiltration as something like a video game with lots of pretty animations.

"Can you enhance it?" This super-cut shows how much Hollywood overuses the "zoom and enhance" trope in solving mysteries.

Don't have a picture from the angle you need? That's okay, the 'CSI: Miami' team can just grab a reflection from the eye of someone in a photo looking the right way.

The scariest practical joke

by Matt Hershberger
D G

fucking hipsters XD

People take their scary movies pretty seriously. I once saw a guy run out of Paranormal Activity screaming. So if you were to, say, see someone doing scary movie shit in real life, you could conceivably lose your fucking mind.

The advertising team for the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s awesome first horror novel, Carrie (about an awkward teenage girl with telekinetic powers who violently loses control), decided to scare the living bejesus out of total strangers by having an actress pretend to have telekinetic powers and then lose her mind. Let’s just say that if I saw this in public, I would run out of the shop screaming so fast that they wouldn’t have time to make me sign the commercial release form.
