Why traffic waves and congestion happen

by Nathan Yau

Why-traffic-waves-happen

You're on the freeway, traffic is moving along, and for no apparent reason everyone slows down. And eventually, for no apparent reason, traffic starts back up again. What the what? Lewis Lehe and Matthew Green explain why these waves occur with a couple of interactives.

The simplest explanation for why traffic waves happen is that drivers have relatively slow reaction times: if the car in front of you suddenly slows down, it’ll likely take you a second or so to hit the brakes. The slower your reaction time, the harder you have to brake to compensate and keep a safe distance. The same goes for the car behind you, which has to brake even harder than you did in order to slow down faster. And so on down the road, in a domino-like effect.

Hit the brakes in the simulation, and you'll see what happens. Naturally this is a simplified version of traffic conditions and assumes some things about how people drive and react, but you'll get the idea.

It might remind you of this real world experiment a few years ago.

Bourbon family tree

by Nathan Yau

Bourbon family tree

Colin Spoelman for GQ illustrated an educated guess of the bourbon family tree.

This chart shows the major distilleries operating in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana, grouped horizontally by corporate owner, then subdivided by distillery. Each tree shows the type of whiskey made, and the various expressions of each style of whiskey or mash bill, in the case of bourbons. For instance, Basil Hayden's is a longer-aged version of Old Grand-Dad, and both are made at the Jim Beam Distillery.

This is important.

Bill Cosby At 76: His New Comedy Sitcom And The Human Spirit

by Addam Corré

Bill Cosby Show

Bill Cosby and Tom Werner, a Cosby Show producer, are teaming up for a new prime time TV comedy which is due to air later this month. Cosby said about the family comedy that he had produced it in order to satisfy all the members of the public who approached him, asking: “Can’t you put something on that I can watch?’”

Bill Cosby said that the new show will similar to The Cosby Show in that it will be based around a family dynamic, but the kids in it will be older than they were in The Cosby Show.

He spoke about the new comedy:

I want to be able to deliver a wonderful show to [a] network. Because there is a viewership out there that wants to see comedy, and warmth, and love, and surprise, and cleverness, without going into the party attitude.

Cosby also spoke to Parade Magazine about the new show as well a whole host of other, more personal subjects. He spoke about when he was a young lad in the Navy and what he learned then about the “human spirit”:

I was in the Navy. I was 19 and a half years old, and I was working as a physical therapist in Bethesda, Maryland, and the now-leveled Philadelphia Naval Hospital. I had a patient whose plane had crashed. He’d lost an arm, an eye, and half of the hair on his head. I had two fellows who were riding motorbikes and a car took both their right legs off. I had a patient who’d been attacked by a mentally ill person who hit him in the head with a hatchet.

Bill Cosby wen to on to speak about the valuable lesson he learned from that experience:

But the human spirit is there. It’s there after a trauma. There is something that kicks in, and it’s got to be God-given because it says, ‘Okay, now, let’s get up. Let’s see what this is about.’ They come down to see the physical therapist, and we begin to work. And while we’re working, we talk. You’d be surprised at the ‘sick jokes’ that we laughed at. You look at life in a positive way, and you work at it. It was just wonderful to watch and I am very, very thankful for [the experience].

Are you excited about the new Bill Cosby comedy about to hit prime time TV? Do you think it can or will match up to the comedy genius of The Cosby Show? Share your thoughts on the matter in the comments feed below.

Henry is a Very Proper Rat

by pyrit

He has refined taste and excellent table manners too!

“This is my friend James’ rat, Henry.  James posted this because there were non-believers in his circle of friends who denied his rat’s ability to drink from a teeny-tiny cup. Behold! Extreme ratty adorableness.” Jill B.

Sony's PlayStation 4 has been widely praised by reviewers as a significant step up from its predecessor, but some early consumers are reporting major problems with the console

Most of the reports are popping up as reviews on Amazon, as well as on Sony’s own support forum. Many of the users describe a pulsing blue light and the inability to get the console to send video to their televisions

As of this writing, the PlayStation 4 had 373 one-star reviews on Amazon, versus 630 five-star reviews, with very few opinions in between

One Amazon reviewer named Julian Woodrum from California posted a report that echoes the experiences of several other users: Read more...

More bad news from the FDA. Turns out frying, baking or roasting certain foods causes the formation of acrylamide, a carcinogen found in cigarette smoke. Why does death always have to taste so good?
