A Gripping Look At ‘Where Children Sleep’ Around The World

by Yek Olam

Where Children Sleep

Where Children Sleep uses photographer James Mollison’s images from around the globe to tell stories of children near and far and the places they call home by way of portraits and pictures of their bedrooms. Published in 2010, the book offers readers and viewers a unique and abstract glimpse into the lives of young people, the likes of which may live across the street or across the world.

“When Fabrica asked me to come up with an idea for engaging with children’s rights, I found myself thinking about my bedroom: how significant it was during my childhood, and how it reflected what I had and who I was,” Mollison says on his Web site.

Photographed over the course of two years, Where Children Sleep was created with support from Save The Children in Italy. It introduces readers to children from all walks of life and reveals all manner of sleeping arrangements: big rooms and small rooms, plush beds and stone steps, beds without rooms, rooms without beds and homes with no roof.

“It occurred to me that a way to address some of the complex situations and social issues affecting children would be to look at the bedrooms of children in all kinds of different circumstances. From the start, I didn’t want it just to be about ‘needy children’ in the developing world, but rather something more inclusive, about children from all types of situations,” Mollison explains.

While the book has an audience between 9 and 13 years of age in mind, the concept and message are such that people of any age can take away a valuable lesson.

Samurai Gunn stealth released on PC today

by Brett Makedonski

Samurai Gunn (from boy genius Beau Blyth) has been flying under the radar for a while, but now it's available for the entire world to experience. The frantically-paced Bushido brawler released on Steam and the Humble Store today without telling anyone it was coming.

The fact that it stealthily released isn't the sticking point, though. Samurai Gunn has seriously impressed in its pre-release builds. In fact, it was my favorite game that I played at PAX Prime. This is one title that you'll want to make a point of looking into.

Lost Johnny Cash Album To Be Released Next Spring

by Tayla Holman

Unreleased Johnny Cash album to be released next spring

A lost Johnny Cash album will be released next spring, a little less than a decade after the country icon’s death.

Cash’s estate will release Out Among the Stars, an album he recorded with Billy Sherrill in the early 1980s, in March. The album was never released by Columbia Records, and went missing after the label dropped Cash in 1986. Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, apparently, had the album the whole time.

“They never threw anything away,” said their son, John Carter Cash. “They kept everything in their lives. They had an archive that had everything in it from the original audio tapes from The Johnny Cash Show to random things like a camel saddle, a gift from the prince of Saudi Arabia.”

It took John Carter Cash and archivists at Legacy Recordings until last year to find the unreleased material. Out Among the Stars was recorded in 1981 and 1984, during a period of great change for country music. Sherrill, then the president of CBS Records Nashville, was helping to push country music toward a more pop sound.

“Dad was always uniquely himself,” Cash said. “And later on the world would come back around. He never modified himself. But Nashville at the time was in a completely different place. It was the Urban Cowboy phase. It was pop country, and dad was not that. I think him working with Billy was sort of an effort by the record company to put him more in the circle of Music Row and see what could happen at the heart of that machine.”

Music Row is an area to the southwest of Downtown Nashville that is home to many country, gospel, and contemporary Christian music industries. It is widely considered the heart of Nashville’s entertainment industry, and was once home to the Country Music Hall of Fame, which moved to Downtown Nashville in 2001.

Columbia executives didn’t care for the recordings on Out Among the Stars, and released a few more of Johnny Cash’s albums before dropping him from his recording contract. Cash found a new home at Mercury Records from 1987 to 1991, releasing three albums, including one of re-recordings from his days at Sun and Columbia Records.

Johnny Cash’s friend Marty Stuart was brought in to re-record his parts on Out Among the Stars. The 12-track album also features a duet with Waylon Jennings and two with June Carter Cash.

“We were so excited when we discovered this,” John Carter Cash said. “We were like, my goodness this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard. Johnny Cash is in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime. He’s pitch perfect. It’s seldom where there’s more than one vocal take. They’re a live take and they’re perfect.”

Out Among the Stars will be released March 25, 2014.

This might just be the greatest advertisement we have ever seen. Seriously. Don’t get me wrong, Carl’s Jr has put out some pretty incredible ads in the past.. but yoga booty next to a big beefy burger? That’s my holy grail.

Now if only someone from Carl’s Jr could deliver this incredible combo to my door, I’d be all set.

A Trippy Museum Inspired by Pink Floyd

by Joseph Flaherty
To honor Pink Floyd, three of whose members met while studying design, The International Competitions in Architecture (ICARCH) recently challenged architects to celebrate Pink Floyd's musical and visual legacy by designing a structure in their honor. A collective of young designers called Arqbauraum managed to capture the band's spirit without turning into a sophomoric parody of their songs.

Doki-Doki Universe review: Love machine

by Danny Cowan
Doki-Doki Universe is a game about empathy, and that's weird.

In many of the games I played this year, you often solve problems by shooting people in the face. That, I can handle. In Doki-Doki Universe, your antagonists aren't clearly defined, and your progress is measured by your ability to seek out societal problems and solve them indirectly through non-violent means.

Doki-Doki Universe's gameplay lands somewhere in between Animal Crossing and a Myers-Briggs personality test. It's like nothing else I've ever played, and it's pretty awesome...in a totally weird sort of way.

I really like the nudie Santas above, but the S&M gingerbread and meh one are also pretty funny -plus, a lot of them are handmade, meaning they are one of a kind wonders.

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking

by Steve O'Hear
Catchbox

Throw the mic in the air like you just don’t care.

Catchbox is a new throwable microphone designed to liven up audience participation, and in turn reduce the faffing around that seems to occur whenever a conference turns to questions from the audience.

The brightly coloured padded cube houses a wireless microphone that doesn’t mind being tossed across a room or passed from person-to-person crowd surfing-style. In fact, it’s actively encouraged. That’s because, along with being able to sustain being dropped, the device has been engineered to automatically mute the sound when flying through the air or if it falls. The tech is patent-pending, apparently.

Although various smartphone apps and cloud-based tools have attempted to lower the barriers of audience participation at live events by enabling the audience to follow along on their own devices or take part in realtime polls, Catchbox’s makers reckon the humble microphone has been neglected.

“There are a number of products that are aimed towards increasing crowd engagement,” notes Mikelis Studers, CTO of Catchbox, citing event apps, voting systems and, of course, conventional wireless microphones. But these, he argues, can be pricey and complex to set up and deploy, or often require the audience to be educated first and/or download an app.

In contrast, Catchbox’s proposition couldn’t be any simpler. “Audiences understand the product immediately: it’s a throwable microphone,” he says.

The Finland-based hardware startup isn’t just targeting events with large audiences, such as tech conferences. Other markets include education, company meetings, and consultants (here I’m envisaging those team-building experts with their endless supply of counterintuitively awkward ice-breakers, or motivational speaker types).

“There is a high expected value from every group session in those fields so we want to provide a tool that would make each session more efficient,” says Studers. “[The] internet has created new ways for sharing. We want to enhance sharing of ideas when people physically come together”.

The Catchbox is available for pre-order today, priced at $549/€395, which includes a separate receiver that can be plugged into various sound systems including stereos, computers and professional sound equipment. It’s not the only product planned by Catchbox, either. Studers tells me that in future the company will expand in the area of “crowd engagement devices” and explore other revenue models.
