The Family Portrait

Let me tell you how glad I am my family made it through the weird creepy portrait stage of our lives unscathed. Probably because Walmart wasn’t as popular back then. Actually, F that theory, this is weird in any generation.

Crypt of the NecroDancer first look: a rhythm action rogulike set in a disco dungeon

by Chris Thursten

Feed me two pints and you’ve got a very good chance of hearing a 20-minute diatribe about how the majority of games would be better if they were musicals. Music is already used extensively to let the player know what they should be feeling: combine it with game mechanics and the principles of performance can be used to let the player know what they should be doing as well. I also really like musicals.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a 2D dungeoncrawling roguelike starring Cadence, a young woman who has her heart stolen (in the surgical sense) by a monstrous lich called the NecroDancer. You must negotiate a series of randomly-generated dungeon levels to retrieve it, all the while moving to the rhythm of her detached but still-beating heart.

It’s essentially a turn-based game, in the sense that time only advances when you take a step, and combat is a matter of positioning yourself so that you move into an enemy’s tile when they are moving away from you. The difference is that moving on the beat builds up your gold multiplier, so you grow in power much more quickly by – effectively – dancing through the dungeon. As your combo multiplier kicks in, the dungeon floor turns into a neon dancefloor and melees turn into massive dance numbers.

This encourages you to make decisions quickly, to respond instinctively rather than tactically to each monster-filled room. Boss battles with dragons and minotaurs become quick-fire dance-offs that reward your ability to think on your feet. You’re also equipped with an upgradable shovel that lets you dig tunnels, allowing you to manipulate enemy movement and uncover secret areas.

The game’s soundtrack is by Danny ‘dB Soundworks’ Baranowsky, whose work includes the Canabalt, Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac soundtracks. Of those, his work on NecroDancer reminds me most of Super Meat Boy – a very good thing – but with a stronger emphasis on danceable beats. It’s fantastic stuff. A particular boss encounter takes place over roiling digital bass that bursts out into synth-heavy metal, while another draws influences from samba. Elsewhere you’ll encounter house, electro and disco. You even have the option of importing your own music – a relatively convoluted process, but the devs promise a more streamlined system for the game’s release next year. Playing the game to faster or slower music is a way for players to customise the difficulty on the fly, a novel idea for a roguelike.

NecroDancer is an unassuming-looking game that’s worth keeping an eye on. It understands the role music plays in making games exciting, and offers a novel take on the rhythm-action formula. Also, it’s pretty much a musical. What’s not to like?

These awesome images from another dimension have not been photoshopped

These are the amazing light paintings of Tackyshack, who is really taking this art form to a complete new level. Some of the amazing images in this small collection of his work are crazy psychedelia. Other look like Alice in Wonderland landscapes. And the one above—playing with shadows and subtle abstract shapes—looks like entrances to alternate dimensions.

Distrust of Big Government growing

by William A. Jacobson

The Obama administration and Obamacare has increased distructs of Big Government so much even a majority of Democrats view government as the greatest threat, via Gallup, Record High in U.S. Say Big Government Greatest Threat:

Seventy-two percent of Americans say big government is a greater threat to the U.S. in the future than is big business or big labor, a record high in the nearly 50-year history of this question. The prior high for big government was 65% in 1999 and 2000….

Gallup Big Govt Threat chart 12-2013

The latest update comes from a Dec. 5-8 poll. Gallup has documented a steady increase in concern about big government since 2009, rising from 55% in March 2009 to 64% in November 2011 and 72% today. This suggests that government policies specific to the period, such as the Affordable Care Act — perhaps coupled with recent revelations of government spying tactics by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden — may be factors.

Traffic Sorted by Color

by noreply@blogger.com (Miss Cellania)

At first, this looks like a car ad, like those that show a group of cars "driven by professionals on a closed course." That's not it at all! This started out as a four-minute shot of traffic on state route 63 in San Diego. Then filmmaker Cy Kuckenbaker actually edited each car into sorted sequences by color! No, he didn't change any car colors or use computer-generated imagery -just editing. And what great editing! The colors are ranked by how common they are, which is why the black-and-white police vehicle is all by itself. (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

Shin-Soo Choo Rejects $20 Million Per Year Offer From New York Yankees

by Nathan Francis

Shin-Soo Choo Turns Down $20 Million Per Year Offer From New York Yankees

Shin-Soo Choo is one of the most sought-after baseball prospects in years, and it apparently will cost more than $20 million a year to get him.

The South Korean star turned down a seven-year, $140 million contract from the New York Yankees. Sources close to the organization say Choo’s superagent Scott Boras rejected the offer in favor of “Jacoby Ellsbury” money (Ellsbury signed for seven years and $153 million).

The Yankees pulled the offer, opting instead to sign slugger Carlos Beltran to a three-year, $45 million deal.

The free agency gamble may have left Shin-Soo Choo with limited options. The Texas Ranges had been interested, but reportedly moved on to Japanese starter Masahiro Tanaka.

Yahoo! Sports writer Jeff Pasan noted that the Houston Astros have shown interest as well, but it’s unclear what they could give up for him:

“The size of Houston’s ante is unclear. The Astros do not like the idea of giving up a draft pick, especially in a year in which another Boras client, Carlos Rodon, is almost a lock to go No. 1 overall and likely to command an excessive portion of Houston’s signing bonus pool.”

But it would still be a stretch for the Astros to committ to the kind of money Shin-Soo Choo is asking for. At points last season, the entire Astros roster had a smaller salary than Choo and Scott Boras want.

Shin-Soo Choo suited up for the Cincinnati Reds last season, hitting.285 with a.423 on-base percentage and an OPS of.885. He got his start in 2005 with the Seattle Mariners, and for his career has 900 hits, 104 home runs and 427 RBIs.

Shazam Finally Becomes A Useful App By Also Becoming Slightly Terrifying

by Chris Morran

shazam-auto-iosI’ve always been a bit perplexed by Shazam, the app that listens to music and other media and (hopefully) identifies it. That alone can be useful, especially when you’re out somewhere and trying to figure out the name of a song playing in the background, or the artist performing said song. Problem is, it always took so darn long for Shazam to start up that it rarely had the time to listen to a sufficient portion of the tune I desperately needed to name. Now the makers of Shazam have figured out a way to speed up that process — by always having the app listening to your every sound, even when the phone is locked.

The latest update to the iPhone version of the app introduces something called “Auto Shazam,” which “does the hard work for you by continuously recognizing popular music and TV around you.”

You have to turn this feature on — which makes it slightly less terrifying than if it were the default — but once it’s on, it will keep trying to recognize music, and movies that it hears. As mentioned above, this continues even after you lock your phone.

Aside from the bizarre idea of allowing a smartphone app to eavesdrop on your channel-flipping or dial-changing (not to mention all the other sounds it might try unsuccessfully to identify), we can’t imagine that having Auto Shazam on all the time is a good idea for your battery or your wireless bill.

Right now, the Auto Shazam thing is just for iOS; news that makes me glad to have an Android phone.

A federal grand jury in Oregon has charged four Portland-area residents with selling methamphetamine through the defunct online black market Silk Road

Prosecutors say the four — Jason Weld Hagen, 39; Chelsea Leah Reder, 23; Richard Egan Webster, 45; and Donald Ross Bechen, 39 — conspired to sell 17 pounds of meth for a total of more than $600,000. All four pleaded not guilty at their arraignment in a Portland court room on Wednesday.

The group made more than 3,000 meth sales between Aug. 25, 2012 and Aug. 3, 2013 to buyers in the United States, Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy and the UK, according to the indictment from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. Read more...

The Steam Holiday Sale has officially begun!

by Brett Makedonski

It's the most wonderful time of the year! That time when you lock yourself away for days at a time -- partially to immerse yourself in all the new videogames you bought on the cheap, partially to avoid the shame from neglecting to buy your loved ones any gifts because you spent all your money on the Steam Holiday Sale.

As if the promise of discounted videogames weren't incentive enough, Steam's introduced snow globe trading cards to sweeten the pot. So, go forth and spend money to play games to earn cards to craft badges. You'd be a Scrooge not to.
