Your Favorite Horror Icons — Now In IKEA Form

by Chris Morran

vorheesWhile it might seem like Jason Voorhees — the silent, masked killer from the Friday the 13th movies — has a knack for being everywhere at once, you can’t have a mass-produced Jason in every home in America at a reasonable price. Yet.

Since Hollywood can constantly “re-imagine” horror franchises for new audiences, Illustrator Ed Harrington has reworked a number of horror film icons, including the beloved Jason, into IKEA product… complete with faux-Swede names.

For example, to make your own Vörhees, you’ll need one drowned person, a machete, a hockey mask, and an allan wrench.

For the Cenöbite (Pinhead variety) from the Hellraiser films, you’ll need one human, a puzzle box, one hammer, one scalpel, 50 nails, and an allan wrench.

Then there’s the Brundlefly, which apparently already sounds vaguely IKEA-ish enough. For this, you’ll require one human, one fly, two teleportation pods, and — what else? — an allan wrench.
brundlefly

Both the Vörhees and the Brundlefly advise against involving any sexual activities with these terrifying IKEA products. With the Vörhees, it could be fatal; with the Brundlefly, it could lead to horrifying dreams and an unwatchably bad sequel.

Speaking of unwatchably bad, we have — we think wisely — omitted Harrington’s IKEA diagram for a Hümån Centipedë (hint: it also involves an allan wrench), but you can see it and others on Harrington’s Tumblr or Instagram pages.

Supersize Your DIY Computing With Tiny Titan

by Andrew Rosenblum

Tiny Titan runs a particle simulator. Each Raspberry Pi chip calculates the motion of one set of objects, communicating with its neighbors about the other particles’ locations. On a real supercomputer, this type of code can model galaxies or ocean wave

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is most famously home to the Titan supercomputer, capable of performing more than 20 quadrillion calculations every second. But the lab also houses the lesser known “Tiny Titan,” whose nine processing units, or “cores,” are made from Raspberry Pis. Making a small-scale supercomputer is relatively simple—just yoke together microelectronics to run in parallel. The hard part, explains Titan support specialist Adam Simpson, is writing the code for it.

“There really is no adequate platform for do-it-yourself super-computing,” Simpson says. So he and two colleagues decided to create a set of software tutorials. By working together, parallel cores can solve complex problems, and the tutorials aim to demystify that process. For example, one lesson will show how to add two lists of numbers together, by dividing the problem into components that individual cores can attack simultaneously. The tutorials are available for free online. Start your journey to supercomputing stardom at github.com/TinyTitan.

Hershey Joins Elite Club Of Companies With Poo-Like Logos

by Chris Morran

hershey_company_logo_detailHershey decision to redesign the company logo to look more chocolaty was probably well-intentioned. But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions… and littered with poo from jerks who don’t pick up after their dogs.

The response to the designers’ use of an unwrapped Hershey Kiss — complete with a wafting paper ribbon — has been met with some less than kind reviews from the readers of UnderConsideration.com, where variations of the poetic phrase “steaming pile of turd” are repeated.

And as FastCoDesign’s Mark Wilson points out, the logo is just some blinking eyes away from being a poo emoji:

The good news is that Hershey is in good company, joining Santander as one of the few companies with logos that literally look like crap.

Netflix Acquires The Blacklist for $2 Million An Episode

by Matt Fowler

Starting September 6th, Season 1 of NBC's The Blacklist will be available to watch (or re-watch, for diehard fans) on Netflix. This acquisition came with a hefty price tag though. $2 million an episode is what Netflix shelled out.

As Deadline reports, Netflix just entered into what is believed to be the "biggest subscription video-on-demand deal" in history with Sony Pictures TV. This $2 million per episode price stands for Season 1 and all future seasons of the James Spader series.

Library Cake: Literature Has Never Been So Delicious

by Lisa Marcus

Facebook user Kathy Knaus, who — from the information I can glean from her profile — I assume resides in Vienna, Austria, posted this picture to her Facebook photo album entitled "cakes." Knauss commented that every item in the album is one of her culinary creations. One commenter complimented Knauss, telling her how special her children must feel to have a mom capable of such cake coups. Knauss jokingly responded, "Or they will just remember having a mom who liked playing with icing and ... frequently up to her elbows in cake batter." Her time spent "playing" certainly amounts to greatness. This cake is a work of art! Check out Knauss' Facebook album here. Via i09.

11 Rare Apps That Were Yanked From Apple's App Store

by Steven Tweedie

Nescaline emulator app

Just because an app is available on the App Store doesn't mean it will stick around.

Apple maintains a tight ship and has strict policies on what apps are allowed to do, but sometimes a few apps slip through the cracks.

From apps that can play old Nintendo games, to the notorious "Flappy Bird," we've collected the most interesting apps that are no longer available — unless you were one of the lucky few who downloaded them before they got yanked.

In the final 24 hours "Flappy Bird" was available, over 10 million people downloaded the addicting game.

Creator Dong Nguyen was bothered by the onslaught of media attention and messages from those addicted to the game. Nguyen later told Rolling Stone he pulled the game because "I'm [the] master of my own fate."

"Nescaline" was a Nintendo emulator that lasted only a couple of hours.

"Nescaline" allowed its users to play full Nintendo games on their iPhone, and even had multitouch support — a novelty for emulators at the time.

"Weed Firm" reached the No. 1 overall spot in the App Store's free section before Apple pulled it.

The game's description asked you to "Follow the story of an expelled botany sophomore Ted Growing as he inherits a growing operation and expands it."

Camera mounted inside fireworks captures head spinning video
