JoeJoe The Puppeh Sitter

by Brinke

From the “C.O. Can’t Even Fathom This” Department: According to the YT video, “the mother of the puppies was unable to care for them so JoeJoe watched over them until they were old enough to go to forever homes.”

So what we’re talking about is..A CAPYBARA PUPPEH SITTER. Say that out loud, then press the video button. #DED.

From Andrew Y., who is tasked with finding an officially licensed Maru plush figure. Don’t think it’s gonna happen.

World Beard & Moustache Championships 2014

by Lisa Marcus

In what one writer called a "manvalanche of epic proportions," these men are a few of the masculine natural disasters taking part in the World Beard & Moustache Championships 2014, held in Portland, Oregon. So much facial hair, so few comments I should make here.

See this Bored Panda post for what they deem to be the "ten fanciest" entrants and visit the championship website for more photos and information.

by Matt Clark

Alienware has announced its latest gaming laptop, the Alienware 13. And while the new portable rig offers some impressive specs for a notebook, the PC manufacturer's new Graphics Amplifier is truly an interesting development.

The Graphics Amplifier works as an add-on to the Alienware 13--a standalone box capable of boosting the laptop's GPU performance to more standard desktop specifications.

Particulars explores the subatomic world next month

by Darren Nakamura

I always appreciate seeing science represented in games, outside of the typical "heroes need to clean up the mess these mad scientists made" trope. Videogames can be so powerful as tools for learning, and that potential is still largely untapped. Particulars looks like it can make strides in that regard, as it turns world of subatomic particles into an action-puzzle game.

Players take on the role of a quark, navigating the universe while subject to the fundamental forces of physics. In the trailer above, I spot a few that I recognize: gravity (or perhaps the nuclear forces) holding like particles together, electric fields attracting and repelling ions, and what looks like matter and antimatter annihilating with one another.

Particulars was accepted onto Steam Greenlight last year, and it will be launching in full on November 19 for $9.99.

A Slim Filter That Purifies Water Bottles From the Inside

by Andrew Liszewski

A Slim Filter That Purifies Water Bottles From the Inside

You can be relatively certain the water inside a bottle is clean and pure when you first open it, but what about when you refill it from a tap or drinking fountain? That's where a water filter can help prevent you from getting sick, or just save your taste buds. And few look as easy to use as the WaterBean, which slips into a bottle and purifies the water with a few seconds of shaking.

Filmed last month by Nicolaus Wegner in Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado, Stormscapes 2 is a gorgeous timelapse of severe weather events. Wegner deftly captured lightning strikes, rainbow formations, tornadic activity, and rolling thunderstorms in a way I’ve never seen before. Well worth a watch. (via Jason Sondhi)

Published today from Harper Design, Shake Puppies is the latest jowl-flapping canine photo book from Portland-based pet and wildlife photographer Carli Davidson. The dangerously adorable collection of images is a follow-up to her 2013 book Shake that similarly featured high-speed photos of adult dogs caught mid-shake as their ears, lips, fur and drool flies in every direction.

Davidson began photographing animals while on staff at the Oregon Zoo, a passion that eventually led to a career shooting portraits of exotic animals, pets with disabilities, and a plethora of cats and dogs. Shake Puppies is available now through Amazon.

31,600 Pounds Of Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets Recalled For Staphylococcal Enterotoxin

by Laura Northrup

nuggetDrop that nugget! The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a recall of 31,600 pounds of Bell & Evans gluten-free chicken nuggets that were shipped nationwide. Random testing in Colorado turned up contamination with Staphylococcal enterotoxin, and all nuggets in the batch have been recalled.

Staphylowhat? The pathogen that caused this recall is Staphylococcus aureus. If that name sounds familiar, certain strains are the “Staph” in “Staph infection” and the “SA” in “MRSA,” or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or the antibiotic-resistant superbugs that are causing serious, terrifying illnesses.

Fortunately, food poisoning with Staphylococcus aureus toxins is one of the less scary foodborne illnesses. While symptoms can begin within maybe half an hour of eating a contaminated food item, it’s usually a mild illness that lasts one to three days. That doesn’t mean you should go chomping on contaminated nuggets, though: check your freezer if this is a product that you buy regularly.

The nugget manufacturer and the U.S. Department of agriculture don’t know of any illnesses caused by this contamination to date, but some may turn up in the future. Since this is a frozen product, people could stick the nuggets in their freezers and forget about them until close to the expiration date.

The nuggets were made by Murry’s Inc., but bear the brand name Bell & Evans. The best by date on the box is August 9, 2015.

I Give Up: 'Sexy Ebola Containment Suit' Costume

D G

it's no ebola-chan but better than nothing

sexy-ebola-costume-sadness.jpg PROTIP: Seriously, don't read the product description. Because this is the world (that I want to blow up) that we live in, here's a $60 'Sexy Ebola Containment Suit' Halloween costume being sold over at BrandsOnSale. You know, because you heard something about Ebola on the news and decided you'd get a relevant Halloween costume this year. Plus it's sexy! Double whammy. You know, I was actually planning on going to a Halloween party this year, but now I'm leaning towards just staying home and drinking bleach. Thanks to Suz, who told me she's going to be Captain Planet this Halloween. Solid choice.
