Windows 10 upgrade will be free

by david [AT] fudzilla [DOT] com (David Stellmack)
Windows 10 upgrade will be free

Only for first year, not sure about Enterprise

So Windows 10 looks pretty good. Want to hear something that will make it even better? The upgrade to Windows 10 will be free for the first year if you are on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1.

This is part of an attempt by Microsoft to unify the users to get more of them on one version of Windows. (No word if the free Windows 10 upgrade will apply to enterprise customers.)

While the Windows 10 upgrade will be free, you will need a PC that is powerful enough to run it and take advantage of its many new features. The good news is about that is that the Windows 10 Technical Preview should help users get a better idea of how Windows 10 will run on their current hardware. As development continues, with optimization it will only run faster.

Those in the Microsoft Insider program will be able to download a new copy of the latest build next week. The Windows Phone release will be available for Insiders to download at some point after the Superbowl.

Silk Road 2.0 Deputy Arrested

by samzenpus
An anonymous reader writes With the Ulbricht trial ongoing in a case over the original Silk Road, Homeland Security agents have made another arrest in the Silk Road 2.0 case more than two and a half months after the site was shut down. This time they arrested Brian Richard Farrell who went by the moniker "DoctorClu." From the article: "Homeland Security agents tracked Silk Road 2.0 activity to Farrell's Bellevue home in July, according to an affidavit by Special Agent Michael Larson. In the months that followed, agents watched his activities and interviewed a roommate who said Farrell received UPS, FedEx and postal packages daily. One package was found to contain 107 Xanax pills, Larson said. That led to a search on Jan. 2 that recovered computers, drug paraphernalia, silver bullion bars worth $3,900, and $35,000 in cash, Larson said."

What Is Quantic Dream Teasing?

by Katie Williams

David Cage helmed studio Quantic Dream has launched a mysterious teaser site that just may be related to the Indigo Prophecy (also known as Fahrenheit outside of the United States and Canada).

Located at ominous-sounding address achillingfeeling.com, the website has some evident throwbacks to the developer's famed cinematic murder mystery. In the middle is a countdown that currently stands at seven days; around it is a number of scribbled, sinister words.

Windows 10's Big Step Back Is Actually a Huge Step Forward

Microsoft has made mistakes. It knows this. But as the company proved today at its Windows 10 HOLOGRAPHIC GOGGLES launch event, it's also not going to stop pushing user interface design into the future. It's just getting smarter about it.

It's Official: President Obama's SOTU Speeches Are The 'Dumbest' In US History

by Tyler Durden

Are you smarter than a 9th grader? Then you will be quite at home with President Obama's latest State of The Union speech. While the Flesch-Kincaid readability test shows SOTU 'smartness' has been plunging Woodrow Wilson, the collapse has accelerated post-Clinton with President Obama's average SOTO speech tailored to the intellect of a 14-year-old - the lowest on record.

As Vocativ reports,

Vocativ also calculated the average SOTU grade for every president dating back to Woodrow Wilson, when it first became the norm to deliver such speeches before a joint session of Congress. Before Wilson, it was typically presented as a written report. Over the last century, the State of the Union’s sophistication has trended steadily downwards.

Perhaps even more sad is the spin that a former speechwriter puts on this downtrend...

“It’s tempting to read this as a dumbing down of the bully pulpit,” Shesol said.

“But it’s actually a sign of democratization. In the early Republic, presidents could assume that they were speaking to audiences made up mostly of men like themselves: educated, civic-minded landowners. These, of course, were the only Americans with the right to vote. But over time, the franchise expanded and presidential appeals had to reach a broader audience.” That, and the advent of mass communication.

Now, when President Obama addresses the country, he is addressing everyone.

Yep - that's it.
