69 Percent of Americans, Including 60% of Democrats, Favor School Choice

by Nick Gillespie

A recent national survey of U.S. adults finds that school choice is massively popular among every possible group and sub-group. For instance:

When asked, "Generally speaking, would you say you favor or oppose the concept of school choice? School choice gives parents the right to use the tax dollars associated with their child’s education to send their child to the public or private school which better serves their needs," fully 69% support school choice, including 45% who strongly support it, while 27% oppose it. School choice support has strong support across partisan lines; 60% of Democrats, 67% of Independents and 81% of Republicans back it.

These arguments in favor of school choice are popular, according to the pollsters at the Democratic-affiliated firm of Beck Research.

o “Too many students are stuck in failing schools and need help right now. If K to 12 students are not receiving a quality education in their neighborhood public school, parents should have the opportunity to get them a quality education at another school” (50% very convincing, 77% very or somewhat convincing).

o “Opportunity scholarship programs give children from low income families a way out of failing schools so they are not forced to wait indefinitely for their local schools to improve. Students should not be sentenced to a poor Page 3 education based upon their zip code” (49% very convincing, 77% very or somewhat convincing).

o “Vouchers provide an immediate path for children from low income families in failing schools to access a better education. Studies show that children in these programs have higher graduation rates, higher academic achievement and parents are more satisfied with their child's school” (43% very convincing, 76% very or somewhat convincing).

Of course, there's at least one Democrat who emphatically does not support school choice, at least when it concerns kids other than his own. That's Barack Obama, who despite sending his own kids to the pricey Sidwell Friends in D.C. (and a similarly fancy private school in Chicago before that), quickly moved to quash a popular and effective scholarship program that allowed needy children in Washington to attend schools that were otherwise out of reach. Watch this 2009 video about how that happened:

Grim Fandango Remastered is a flawed remake of a considered masterpiece

by Ars Staff
Comedy is one of the most difficult things to convey in video games. This is partly due to the pacing. A great deal of comedy is about timing, and when the audience is in control of how fast things play out, comic timing can be finicky and unpredictable.

Maybe that's why adventure games seem like the perfect place to make people laugh. In the days before The Walking Dead, point-and-click adventure games acted like coin operated dialogue machines. Input a puzzle, and a ready-made bit of conversation dispenses in capsule form—perfect and unaltered by the player's actions.

Tim Schafer is often credited with being one of the funniest people in video games for good reason. It could just as easily be said, however, that he was one of the first to recognize adventure games' inherent usefulness as a comedy tool. Grim Fandango was the last adventure game Schafer worked on as part of the now-defunct LucasArts, and its commercial failure represented the end of a golden age for the genre, cementing the game’s legend in certain circles.

Grim Fandango’s near-mythical stature has only increased by the fact that the game has never been re-released or ported to modern hardware since its initial release. Scarcity makes the heart grow fonder, in this case, and so the adventures of protagonist Manny Calavera, Meche, and Glottis through the Land of the Dead have become the perfect candidates for this new "remastered" edition.

Oblitus is coming soonlitus

by Robert Summa

Adult Swim Games has officially announced that their fantasy 2D roguelike scroller Oblitus is coming soon. How soon? Hell, I don't know, and I guess Adult Swim doesn't know either, since they're not telling us.

At the very least, the trailer has some decent music and the art that has accompanied the game appears to be cool as fuck.

Guys Who Post Lots Of Selfies More Likely To Be Psychopaths, Researchers Say

by Meaghan Ellis
D G

Only guys?

guys who post selfies

Guys who post lots of selfies might be highly attractive, but apparently, looks can be quite deceiving. According to a new study, guys who post lots of selfies may be much more flawed than they appear. On Instagram there are thousands of bodybuilders who showcase their assets daily. While they may be considered delectable eye-candy, researchers argue that guys who show a heightened interest in selfies may personality traits many women would find quite disturbing. The study has confirmed that selfies-loving men are more likely to be psychopaths.

The research project conducted by Ohio State University surveyed a total of 800 men between the ages of 18 and 40. Although the results don’t necessarily mean the guys are psychopaths, researchers suggest that they have a higher chance of being narcissistic with a higher possibility of psychopathy.

For those who don’t know the characteristics of a narcissist man, he may feel he is more attractive, smarter, and much more talented and successful than his counterparts. Jesse Fox, lead author of the study and assistant professor at the university, recently shared details about the findings on the OSU website. Although the findings aren’t very surprising, what is surprising is that the guys who spend so much time perfecting selfies for social media are just the opposite – anti-social. Fox went on to reveal a number of interesting details about selfie-loving “socially, anti-social” men.

“It’s not surprising that men who post a lot of selfies and spend more time editing them are more narcissistic, but this is the first time it has actually been confirmed in a study,” Fox said. “The more interesting finding is that they also score higher on this other anti-social personality trait, psychopathy, and are more prone to self-objectification.”

The study goes on to break down the distinct similarities in personality traits associated with psychopathy and narcissism. Bustle refers to “selfie-taking” as a “double-edged sword” that may contribute to the growing epidemic of narcissism, which triggers characteristics of psychopathy. While men who posted lots of lots of selfies had a higher possibility of having narcissistic and psychopathic traits, psychopathy would not focus on perfecting photos by editing and adding filters.

Editing and perfecting photos is closely related to narcissism and self-objectification. Researchers also shared details about the association between self-objectification, psychopathy and narcissism. Fox touched on a common misconception about such habits as most people would assume only women would do such things.

“Most people don’t think that men even do that sort of thing, but they definitely do,” Fox said. “That makes sense because psychopathy is characterized by impulsivity. They are going to snap the photos and put them online right away. They want to see themselves. They don’t want to spend time editing,” she said.

“We know that self-objectification leads to a lot of terrible things, like depression and eating disorders in women. With the growing use of social networks, everyone is more concerned with their appearance. That means self-objectification may become a bigger problem for men, as well as for women.”

Although Fox has concluded the research project in reference to guys who post selfies, she is planning to conduct a new study on selfies from a different perspective. According to USA Today, Fox plans to research the a self-reinforcing cycle that encourages social media users to post more selfies.

Do you agree with the new study about guys who post lots of selfies? Share your thoughts.

Caption Contest: When Barry Met Sally

by Tyler Durden

Having cut his visit short with his other best friend - India's Narendra Modi - President Barack Obama (escorted by his wife Michelle) hopped Air Force One over to Saudi Arabia to pay respects to the dead King and meet-and-greet the new King Salman. The meeting full of pomp and circumstance was, however, not without controversy - with videos circling social media showing Michelle Obama's image blurred out and claims that she was snubbed by King Salman - all apparently untrue.

Big, beautiful photos of Russia's tram of the future

by Steven Tweedie

Russian One Tram

The Russian One is a new commuter tram that looks like something from a sci-fi film.

The futuristic tram features LED cabin lighting, felt-covered sofas, wooden handrails, and sliding glass doors that operate by touchscreen.

Luckily, photographer Ilya Varlamov was able to snap some pictures of the new Russian One prototype, right from the showroom floor.

Note: All photos shown are used with permission.

The Russia One is covered in stunning glass paneling.

This is the tram's designer, Alexei Maslov.

The interior of the tram is incredibly beautiful.

How Much More GDP "Growth" Will Be Due To Obamacare?

by Tyler Durden

A month ago we revealed that, much to the chagrin of economists who proclaimed that the laughable 5.0% GDP surge in in Q3 was the result of the now undisputable economic "recovery" (where is that recovery now?), that the bulk of the upward revision came from the latest attempt to centrally-plan and socialist the US economy: an attempt which has immediate, and short-term benefits and a very long lasting adverse side-effects: the mandatory wealth-redistribution that is the tax known as Obamacare.

So looking forward, now that the soaring dollar and plunging crude are sure to punish the Q4 2014 and Q1 2015 GDP growth rate by more than half, with estimate now sliding to the mid to low-2% area, what "benefits" to the US economy can one expect from the tax that is Obamacare?

As the following chart courtesy of Goldman shows, thanks to contributions from Medicaid and Medicare and, drumroll, Exchange subsidies, the "benefits" from Obamacare will be with us, well, maybe not "us", but certainly with the way GDP is calculate for a long, long time, as the recent health spending ramp is only just getting started. Here's Goldman's Alec Phillips:

After several rounds of downward revisions to forecasts, projected spending on federal health programs has been more stable recently. CBO did make a small additional downward adjustment to Medicaid spending in its new estimates; that change was driven by evidence of slowing spending growth in that segment. However, overall the changes are a rounding error compared to the size of the programs and much smaller than the downward revisions made over the last few years, which cumulatively reduced projected spending over the next decade by more than $1 trillion. Recent data show an acceleration in spending growth in federal health spending programs, though this appears to be due mainly to the coverage expansion resulting from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) rather than increasing cost growth, as might be suggested by rising growth in Medicare spending, for example (Exhibit 2). That said, whether health spending growth begins to pick up will be an important factor for the medium-term budget deficit.

In other words, all that is needed for the Q1 "winter storm" impact to be fully offset in GDP is for millions of Americans to have no choice but to pay even higher monthly taxes, pardon Obamcare premiums. Then economists wonder where all those "low gas price" savings are going to.

And all this, we should reminder readers, is happening just as some 20% of American savings were "revised" away.

Perhaps all that is needed for 10% GDP growth every quarter, every year is for the government to confiscate all household savings and to dictate just how all this "excess" money is invested most cleanly and efficiently. In other words, just like the USSR.

Medieval contraption builder Besiege looks splendid

by Jordan Devore

Word of Besiege has gotten to me slowly, but now that it's here, I feel obligated to pass the message on. This is a physics-driven medieval puzzle game about building killer contraptions, like this ingenious windmill on wheels, to lay waste to castles, soldiers, and livestock alike.

The creation process looks intuitive enough -- you're snapping pieces together, essentially -- and I dig the basic concept. But what has me most on board with Besiege, I think, is the art direction. The tilt-shifty, "miniatures" look fits so well with this theme. Gorgeous work.

There's a playable alpha build (Windows, Mac, Linux) available. It's $6.99 and currently includes 15 campaign levels, Sandbox Mode, and a time-dilation dial for slow motion (also super slow-mo).

Given the game's structure, I imagine it'll be suitably enjoyable in this content-incomplete state. But if you'd rather wait, that's a fine choice too. Besiege is already approved for Steam.
