Amsterdam is going to host the world's first 'drone circus'

by Rob Price

We're officially living in the future: Amsterdam is set to host the world's first "drone circus," the Guardian reports.

It's called AIR 2015, and the Royal Netherlands Air Force is helping organise it. It will be "the first ever drone entertainment show in the world," the event's website says. "In this high energy and explosive show, drones will take centre stage to bring a collaboration and fusion of music, video, projections and special effects. AIR allows you to experience a variety of ballet and battles, races and lasers, circus illusions and most of all magic from hundreds of drones."

According to a promotional video, it's going to feature "ballet & battles":

There will also be "races & lasers."

This concept of a drone ambulance promises to revolutionise emergency operations

by Stefano Pozzebon

A design firm from Austin, Texas, has designed a drone ambulance that promises to speed up emergency support in rural areas and provide quick treatment for major traffic accidents.

medidrone1

Argodesign, a firm that normally works in partnership with software companies, has decided to expand its portfolio and has designed the drone vehicle concept almost as a provocation to the manufacturing industry.

Mark Rolston, founder and chief creative officer at the firm, told Business Insider that Argodesign "had lot of conversations with companies about drones", but had noticed most of them were focused on creating small drones for consumer applications - companies like Amazon have explored using them for delivery, for example.

"So the design team started asking themselves what other problems could be solved with this new technology. The concept work such as the drones is our creative outlet to explore ideas our clients are not ready to ask for, to leverage innovative new technologies and imagine how they may come to shape our future," Rolston said.

medidrone4

In the designers' minds, the drone does not need a pilot on location, so it can depart immediately.

It would fly above traffic or rural territories, avoiding obstacles on the ground to arrive on location faster than a normal ambulance. The drone is also very small: it is the size of a compact car, meaning that it would be able to land on a street, while helicopters still need a lot of preparation on the ground before they can land.

Is Rand Paul a Racist for Opposing Loretta Lynch?

by Kip Hooker

Is Rand Paul a Racist for Opposing Loretta Lynch? If wanting to end programs that hurt black people by taking their stuff and making it harder for them to be successes in this country makes one racist then it certainly seems as though Rand is guilty as charged.

CNN Anchor: ‘Our Rights Do Not Come From God’

by Kip Hooker

CNN Anchor: ‘Our Rights Come From Man’ We hate to trot out the well worn phrases but all the same here it goes. If we assume that rights are imparted by the will of the state then we’ve permitted that state the authority to abort them. And abort them it will. In the 19ths century the thinking that rights come from man allowed for the institution of slavery. In the 20th century it brought about the Holocaust. And while we don’t know what the specific consequences will be in the 21st Century we do know that they will have a tireless champion in crypto fascists like Chris Cuomo.

Fingerhut.com Uses Over-Inflated Retail Prices To Make Rent-To-Own Look Affordable

by Chris Morran

On its TV ads, Fingerhut.com shows people making peace with their “budget” alter-egos by doing their shopping on the website that allows you to make “low” monthly payments. But what the site doesn’t say is that not only do those payments add up to a lot more than the original price of what you’re buying, but that Fingerhut’s sticker prices are grossly inflated over the actual retail prices.

Just take a look at the three following examples that we picked at random from the many items for sale on Fingerhut.

1. Sanyo 58″ TV
fingerhutsanyo

On Fingerhut, this Sanyo LED TV (it’s finally revealed in the details far down the product page that the model is a Sanyo DP58D34) lists a $999.99 retail price, which has been discounted to $899.

At that price, a $59.99/month payment might seem like an affordable alternative, even though you’ll end up paying around $1,300 for the TV by the time you finish.

(FYI, This total cost info is not easy to figure out as it requires scrolling through column after column of microprint on this page, where you need to find the exact right retail price, shipping category and monthly payment before learning how many months the payments go on for and what the total cost for renting-to-own will be.)

But then you look on Amazon and see that you can buy the exact same TV for $610, down from an original price of $642:
amazonsanyo

And you can get an even better deal with $529 at Walmart.com, though this site claims the original retail price was $799:
walmartsanyo

Regardless of what the original retail price was, it doesn’t appear to have ever been $999, nor $899. And if you go the Fingerhut monthly payment route, you’ll end up paying more than twice what you would at either Walmart.com or Amazon.

If, instead of paying Fingerhut $60/month for nearly two years, you just put aside $60/month for 9-10 months, you’ll be able to pay for that TV in cash.

2. iPad Air (16GB WiFi)

Since there is some disagreement with the original MSRP on the Sanyo TV, let’s look at a product where we know both the original and current MSRP. This model of Apple’s iPad Air tablet originally sold for $499 and has since been dropped to $399. And yet, Fingerhut inexplicably gives the device an original retail price of $649.99, which has been discounted to $520, still much higher than this tablet was ever priced by Apple:
fingerhutipad

And at 19 months of $35/month payments, you’re doing to spend about as much as the inflated retail price that Fingerhut apparently conjured out of thin air.

Just to make sure that Apple hadn’t suddenly decided to raise the price on the device — and to check that it was still available — we looked at Apple.com, where you can readily buy this tablet for $399 or for 24 payments of $18.97 ($455.28)
appleipad

And lest someone claims that maybe Fingerhut mislabeled this product and meant to say it was a newer iPaid Air 2, we checked the price and availability on that item. Once again, all looked okay, with the device selling for $499 or 24 payments of $23.72 ($569.28).

appleipadair2

So you could finance the newest iPad Air 2 for about $100 less than what it would cost you to get an older model through Fingerhut.

And again, rather than paying $35/month to Fingerhut for 19 months, save that same amount of money for 10-11 months and buy it at the lower price in cash.

3. Sony PlayStation 4
And here’s a product where the retail price has not changed since its release (not including holiday sales and promotions). In the fall of 2013, the PS4 sold for $399.99 and it still officially sells for $399.99. So why is Fingerhut not only listing it at $529.99 but also calling it a “Best Value!”?
fingerhutps4

And after 20 payments of $34.99, you’re looking at paying around 170% of the retail price. If you saved that amount of money — just like the iPad Air example — you’d have enough to buy a PS4 with cash in 10-11 months.

The Bottom Line

We know that rent-to-own can be a really tempting proposition for people who want to buy something now but can’t afford to pay for it or lack the credit for a more affordable payment plan. But be warned that you are just throwing money down the drain and consigning yourself to further debt.

Last month, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey called on both the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to take a closer look at the rapidly growing rent-to-own (RTO) industry.

“I am concerned about the threat that the continued growth of the RTO market poses to the financial stability of millions of Americans,” he wrote at the time. “It is essential that customers entering into RTO deals are aware of the risks involved.”

8 Classic Movies That Nurtured Us Into Geeks

by Remy Carreiro

clash

As a geek, one cannot undermine the power film had over us at becoming what we are today. From taking us to the far reaches of the universe in vessels we had only dreamed about until that point, to showing us dragons as we always imagined them, film and geekdom go hand-in-hand. And there are certain films that specifically set us all down the path we are on today. Here are eight films that pretty much ensured we would all be geeks for life (and we mean that in a good way!)

Star Wars

As if you could start such a list with anything but Star Wars. Yes, there are movies that go back further, but Star Wars forever changed the way we look at the concept of the ‘space opera’. From the strange way Chewie communicated to the heavy, mechanic breathing of Darth Vader, these are things ingrained in our geek brains because of this amazing series.

Can’t wait to see where Abrams takes it in 2015!

Clash of the Titans

Keep in mind, we have nothing nice to say about the remake. We are talking about the original here. The version with the badass robotic owl. Though we can watch it now and laugh at  some of the claymation effects, there is still something undeniably cool about it as well.

It was high fantasy like we had never seen before in film. My very favorite movie through most of my youth, too!

The Goonies

Do you recall the way you felt the first time you saw the Goonies? The way it made you believe that YOU could get into an adventure as outlandish and amazing as the kids in the movie? That movie opened so many of our young minds to the idea of adventure and of being the hero, and that is something true Goonies fans never shook and actually used to help define them.

Also, HEY YOU GUYYYYYSSSS!

Lord of the Rings (Old Animated and New)

Depending on what generation you are from, you may have experienced different Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. For all you millennials, you experienced the AMAZING Peter Jackson movies, which melted your face with their sheer awesome. For those of us a little older, we had the Ralph Bakshi cartoons. And honestly, though they may not stand up to the films, for the time, they were kind of awesome, songs and all.

Included above is a clip from the animated movie to show some of the younger generations the version WE grew up with. Funny side note, the original movie was supposed to be a film and the cast was going to be the Beatles.

Not even kidding a little.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Another one just like the Goonies, Indiana Jones made us truly believe there were jobs like that out there. That maybe, one day, if we were cool enough, we would be wearing a leather jacket and swinging over pits using a whip, too.

Sadly, many went on to learn being an archaeologist involved far less whipping and boulder running than this movie  and series led them to believe.

The Last Starfighter

We all know this movie came after Star Wars and was kind of a rip off of that, but the incorporation of video games into the plot was pretty genius, and for those of us who were already gamers and into arcades at the time, it was the perfect mix of both of those worlds. Pretty sure Ender’s Game (which came out in book form a year later) seemed AWFUL SIMILAR to this idea, too. Just saying.

Still wondering why they never made a sequel to this cult movie, to be honest.

War Games

Some of the younger crowd may not have seen this Matthew Broderick movie, but it DEFINITELY had a huge factor in the amount of programmers and hackers you see in the world today.

A movie where a kid almost mistakenly starts world war 3 as the result of some hacking seemed to awaken something in many would-be geeks for years to come. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Little of both, probably.

Harry Potter (series)

This series did SO MUCH for getting kids back into reading, there really aren’t enough good things that can be said about it. And though the movies may not have been as good as the books, they still did a damn fine work of making the magical world of Hogwarts seem real (and also fueling a generation of future nerds who will hopefully be the next great generation of fantasy authors).

So we may look at movies and think of them as simple entertainment or a nice distraction from life, but this list proves they have a far-reaching effect in helping some of us happily define ourselves as geeks.

What other movies would YOU add to this list? Let us know in the comments below!
