Weird is an interesting term because, at least where music is concerned, what was Weird 20 years ago often becomes accepted by the time a few decades have passed. Take a band like Young Marble Giants; in their time, they were weird as fuck. Nowadays, however, they’re revered because they’re NOT so weird, as a lot of bands, over the years, have ende- avored to sound like them in one way or another.
That’s why Tensión: Spanish Experimental Underground 1980-1985 is an important artifact: Because no matter how close no-wave/freak-folk/ noise-mulch/etc. get to becoming socially acceptable, these tunes always will be weird as fuck because they belong to nothing and no one.
Even in the era of Pink, Ariel, no one will ever listen to cuts like “He,” by Mar Otra Vez, and confuse it…

…for the work of a current artist. It’s too disjointed and snarling, nasty like Martin Rev’s most gnarling dog-on-bone thrashes, yet almost innocent where instrumentation is concerned — i.e., no distortion, no guitar freakouts, no noise blowing through the composition from behind. In fact, the most recognizable trait of “He” is its simple guitar line, which, more than anything, reminds me of old psych riffs by the likes of Nuggets champions Dantalian’s Chariot and The Doors circa “Not to Touch the Earth.”

“Cha Cha Cha” by Clónicos is another example of a song untouched by time. The saxophones bring to mind Zzzz and Sweep The Leg Johnny, but beyond that? Muy extraño, thank you very much. And what of those tufts of wind, clarinets, violent bursts of Dizzy Gillespie trumpet, wax-scratching, and lazer shots? Not of this world, to say the least, and certainly not part of a strategy to accomplish anything more than a brain-busting end. As outside-the-norm as a lot of music reviewed on TMT seems, it’s rare to hear such a brazen disregard for the rules in the here-and-now (Even when things get weird, there’s usually a root involved, a scene to be shared, etc.), and I’m not even going to get into the dementedly bizarre world of Depósito Dental; you’ll have to drill into that rock-hard sucker yourself.

The risk of all this disjointedness, of course, is flat-out failure, and I would argue there’s a lot of flat-out bad to be had on Tensión. Claustrofobia combine emotive vocal pleading with reggae echo-riffs and a tubby slug of a drum machine on “París Nostàlgic” and fall flat on their faces, mashing their delicate features on the hot pavement. La Gran Curva’s “Tensión” is weird and outdated in the worst possible way, bolstered by a sickening funk bassline and vocals cheesier than havarti melted over a microphone.

If you are truly dedicated to the unflinchingly weird, however, this should come as no surprise, and underground-music enthusiasts of many a stripe will find Tensión: Spanish Experimental Underground 1980-1985 worthwhile, from the Bobby Trimble followers to the Les Georges Leningrad-ers to Jandek folk to those sequestered in a coldwave cave until the next summer psych solstice. Just keep the “skip” button handy, cave dwellers.

Si os gusta la comedia americana y os manejáis bien en inglés, tenéis que oír este deslumbrante disco de Tig Notaro. Grabado en el mismo mes en el que, (empiezo) , contrajo una enfermedad que le fastidió  el estómago y casi le mata, una neumonía, le dejó su novio, murió su madre y le diagnosticaron cáncer, este set es un auténtico espectáculo de humor negro y cañero. Los más agoreros pronosticaron que la música había muerto en televisión. Se equivocaban, los concursos musicales han renacido con fuerza. Aunque para ello haya que torturar a los concursantes. Así es Killer Karaoke, el game show que inquieta a la audiencia del canal norteamericano truTV.

Presentado por el exjackass Steve-O y basado en el inglés Sing If You Can (Canta si puedes), el programa tortura con saña a los participantes mientras intentan interpretar un reconocible éxito. Difícil tarea la de no desafinar, pues las maquinaciones de los autores del formato son tan inquietantes como tronchantes (para el espectador, claro, no para la víctima…).

Un programa sólo apto para el público más perverso.

Cinco formatos surrealistas de la TDT

ECC Ediciones  ha publicado con este tomo la conclusión de “DMZ”, la opera magna de Brian Wood y Riccardo Burchielli, completando de este modo la edición casi completa iniciada por Planeta. Con “Las Cinco Naciones de Nueva York”, el tomo recopilatorio que reúne los números 66 a 72 de la edición original, se pone un brillante punto final a una de las series que en los últimos años más ha hecho por mantener el prestigio y la esencia del ya finiquitado sello Vertigo.
Matty Roth, el reportero de la Zona Desmilitarizada en que se convirtió Nueva York, ha logrado poner punto final a la II Guerra Civil Norteamericana. Sin embargo, no ha sido fácil y a partir de ahora nada será igual para el mundo que Roth conoció a lo largo de los seis años en que informó desde la Zona Desmilitarizada. Sin embargo, los sacrificios de Roth no han acabado, cuando ha de responder de delitos contra la humanidad ante un tribunal norteamericano.
“Las Cinco Naciones de Nueva York” es el arco argumental con el que Wood pone el cierre definitivo a la serie tras haber ya explicado en entregas anteriores cómo se fraguó el fin de la guerra. Wood va mostrandoa través de los pasos de su protagonista en torno al nuevo panorama tras los acuerdos de paz en la Zona Desmilitarizada y el destino de los principales personajes supervivientes al tiempo que esconde, como última sorpresa final, el pírrico y amargo destino de su protagonista.
A pesar de ser una de las series más inteligentes y arriesgadas aparecidas en los últimos tiempos en el mainstream norteamericano y de largo el mejor trabajo de su guionista, esta inteligente y cercana distopía sociopolítica me da la sensación que no ha contado con todo el reconocimiento que por su calidad merecía. Wood, con mano sabia, ha sabido construir un Nueva York asediado y convulso  en el que ha descrito complejas situaciones políticas que no están del todo alejadas a las que podemos ver en cualquier telediario sin olvidar mantener el toque humano propio del reporterismo para reflejar cómo la vida cotidiana intentaba mantenerse en un entorno tan hostil.
 Para esta última entrega, un autor menos comprometido y más tramposo fácilmente podría haber optado por una salida más fácil y airosa para el antihéroe protagonista, sin embargo Wood ha sabido ser consecuente con sus planteamientos, no apostando una vez más por las salidas fáciles y ofreciendo una de las conclusiones más adultas, dramáticas y terribles que hemos podido leer últimamente en cualquier cómic.
Mención aparte merece el trabajo del padre gráfico de la serie, el italiano Riccardo Buchielli quién con su trazo grueso y estilo feista ha sabido imprimir un realismo conciso y sobrio a la compleja ficción orquestada por Brian Wood. Creo que de la larga lista de dibujantes que han colaborado con el guionista pocos  han entendido a Wood como Burchielli y eso ha repercutido favorablemente en la calidad final de esta obra.
En fin, “DMZ” es un tebeo estupendo que nos permite reflexionar sobre nuestro presente y futuro, y este volumen el final lógico y coherente a las premisas sostenidas por los autores a lo largo de una serie llamada a revalorizarse con los años.
