Spanish Bombs: Granada Unveils Joe Strummer Plaza

by Nick Hilden

Punk rock was never meant to gain municipal recognition, but with time it often occurs that what was once rebellion becomes part of the establishment. Joe Strummer of the Clash has been no stranger to public acknowledgement, and yesterday the city of Granada, Spain, named a plaza in his honor.

Sitting in the Plaza de Carmen waiting for my contact from the Granada City Council to take me to the plaque unveiling what is now known as Placeta de Joe Strummer, I thought about how much dissension there was once in Portland, Oregon, when they tried to rename a street after the renowned Latino American civil rights activist Caesar Chavez. In Granada, memorializing Strummer seemed to meet with no opposition—in fact, it was being viewed as a moment of great importance.

Prior to his death in 2002, Strummer was a frequent visitor to Granada. He first came in the 1970s with Slits drummer Palmolive, his girlfriend at the time. He would later immortalize the city in the classic 1979 song "Spanish Bombs" in which he referred to the city as his corazon and paid homage to the famous Granadino poet Frederico Garcia Lorca. Over the years he could be spotted rollicking through the Albayzin neighborhood. His daughters said they would join their father on his all night pub crawls as he worked his way from bar to bar collecting a Pied Piper crew of drinking companions. The idea for the tribute to Strummer dates back from late 2011 when local residents launched a Facebook campaign trying to lobby the city to name a square after him. In the end thousands of residents and a number of local political groups—including conservative city council members working in tandem with socialist unions—petitioned to make it so, and Placeta de Strummer became a reality.

Placeta de Strummer is situated in a quiet neighborhood called the Realejo, just outside the red walls of the Alhambra castle. It is a smallish, dirt-covered square with a few pine trees and a drinking fountain carved in stone. There is a breathtaking view of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Just below this vista there is a large mural depicting Strummer's face—it was in this little square where his family and friends along with hundreds of residents and fans gathered to say a few words and have a bit of fun in his honor.

The evening began with a speech by Marcia Farquhar, a friend of Strummer's. She spoke about how much the "extraordinary leader of lost boys and lost girls" loved Granada and Spain. This was followed by a few words from his widow Lucinda Garland, who reiterated his appreciation for the city and its people. Looking on were his daughters Jazz and Lola, as well as Richard Dudanski of Strummer's pre-Clash band the 101ers and Public Image Ltd.

Following the unveiling of the plaque, there was music and revelry. The air filled with the undeniable scent of marijuana and bottles of wine circulated through the crowd as it was regaled by a Clash cover band made up of members from the Spanish band 091 (for whom Strummer had produced an album and worked with extensively), his old backup band the Mescaleros, and Jem Finer of the Pogues.

A slew of Clash classics rang out into the night, including "Spanish Bombs", "London Calling" and "Guns of Brixton.” Passersby were drawn into the festivity as smiling neighbors looked on from windows and balconies. Undoubtedly the celebrations were loud, but things are always loud in Granada—perhaps that's one of the reasons Strummer was drawn here in the first place.

It is an interesting moment for one of the great chiefs of punk music to garner such a recognition in Spain. Street demonstrations have been rocking the country on a regular basis, and youth unemployment has reached an insufferable nadir. Benefits are being steadily cut to the lower-classes, people are being turned out of their homes, and a number of provinces are renewing their calls for independence—could there be a more fertile atmosphere for the sound of rebellion?

Whether you love him for his role as the Sweet Transvestite in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott's Legend, Pennywise the clown in the TV adaptation of Stephen King's It, Wadsworth the butler in Clue, Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, his voice work for scads of cartoons, his countless theater performances, his many unforgettable, wonderfully strange guest spots on various TV shows, his absolutely amazing voice, or for (quite possibly) all of these things at once, the fact is, you love Tim Curry. Spare a thought tonight for this acclaimed, ubiquitous character actor, singer, dancer, and odd-looking, sexy little man. Tim Curry, 67, has had a major stroke at his home in Los Angeles. Early reports said that he was left unable to speak, but his agent now tells the Daily Mail that he's "doing great (...) He absolutely can speak and is recovering at this time and in great humor."

La nueva Xbox One permitirá hacer ver que se mata a personas

by Kike García

Where 'Arrested Development' Left Off at the End of Season 3, Bluth by Bluth

by Bradford Evans

Don't have time to rewatch all of Arrested Development before the new season premieres this Sunday? Well, we put together this handy guide to where each character left off plot-wise at the end of Season Three, including all the Bluths and some significant non-Bluths, to jog your memory. Creator Mitch Hurwitz has said, the new season will explain what each character has been up to in the seven years since the show went off the air, so it'll be important to know where everybody was in 2006 so that you won't be totally lost when Netflix drops 15 new episodes this weekend.

Michael Bluth
Michael was celebrating getting his father's charges dropped and achieving a "risky" rating from the CNBC finance show Mad Money in the finale. He leaves the family party to take care of his romantically frustrated son George Michael, who stole GOB's yacht after finding out GOB is dating his ex Ann. When the Bluth party is raided by the SEC and Lucille is about to be arrested, Michael decides not to help his family for once. He elects to head take the yacht, with George Michael, to George Sr.'s hideaway in Cabo San Lucas since they have a full tank of gas and $500,000 in cashier's checks. They later find that George Sr. is stowed away in the boat's cabin with them and will be joining them in Cabo.

Lindsay Bluth Fünke
In the final episode of Season Three, Lindsay found out from Stan Sitwell that she's adopted and that she's actually 40, three years older than she thought she was. George and Lucille adopted her in order to stick it to their competitors, the Sitwells, who were planning on adopting Lindsay. Still in an open marriage with Tobias in the finale, Lindsay tried to talk Michael into marrying her upon finding out she's not his blood relative, planning to divorce Tobias in order to do so. Michael turned her down, but she still spoke about her ambitions to marry him afterwards.

GOB Bluth
GOB had been living on The C-Word, the yacht he purchased when he was the Bluth Company's President, and dating George Michael's Christian teenage ex-girlfriend Ann. GOB and Ann got together after he awarded her a third place prize at an inner beauty pageant in the episode "Notapusy," and the two had not consummated their relationship, only going to "second base" as the narrator points out. George Michael punched GOB when he found out about his relationship with Ann and took his yacht, presumably leaving GOB homeless. Later on, GOB finds out Linday isn't his biological sister and that she's romantically interested in Michael, so his competitive streak with Michael causes him to hit on her, only to have her physically fight him.

George Michael Bluth
A couple episodes before the finale, George Michael and Maeby accidentally got married after taking part in what they thought was a fake wedding to entertain Alzheimer's patients in a hospital. In the show's penultimate episode, George Michael and Maeby got "drunk" on fake wine that they thought was real, and he told her he suspects she's adopted. The two made out, getting to "second base," only to have Tobias obliviously tell them that Maeby is in fact the biological child of himself and Lindsay. George Michael spends the rest of the series avoiding Maeby, opting to try to get his ex Ann back. Upon finding his uncle GOB stole Ann from him, George Michael punches GOB and takes his yacht, finding himself piloting it around aimlessly on the Pacific. Michael catches up to him and joins him on the yacht where he informs George Michael that Lindsay is adopted, making Maeby, in fact, not his blood relative. Michael convinces George Michael to come to George Sr.'s secret hideaway in Cabo with him, only to later find that George Sr. is onboard the yacht with them.

Maeby Fünke
As mentioned above, Maeby made out with George Michael in the second-to-last episode and has yet to find out that they're not related because of her mother's adoption. After all of her peers found out she was only 16 years old and she conned her way into her job as an exec at the movie studio Tantamount, Maeby feared she was about to be fired. She found out that she wasn't being fired and that the studio has received 10 offers on the TV rights to her story. Maeby spent the finale getting family members to sign release forms for her to turn her life into a TV show, only to pitch it to Ron Howard at the very end of the show and be told by him that he doesn't see her story as a TV show. "Maybe a movie."

Buster Bluth
Not much has changed for Buster by the show's Season Three finale, but he did fall off the boat at a family party, only to find himself in the ocean confronting the same loose seal who bit off his left hand – the last image we saw of him.

Tobias Fünke

At the end of Season Three, Tobias was still a struggling actor in an unhappy open marriage with Lindsay who is oblivious to his own homosexuality.

George Bluth Sr.
Thanks to Michael's efforts, George Bluth was cleared of treason and his other charges, and Lucille was revealed to be the one behind all of his crimes and the one controlling the company. George tricked Oscar into impersonating him at the family's stockholders' party, which is interrupted by an SEC raid targeting Lucille. George was found to be stowed away in GOB's yacht, which Michael and George Michael were taking it to George's hideaway in Cabo, which features an exact replica of the Newport Beach/Iraq model home.

Lucille Bluth
In the finale, Lucille was revealed to be the mastermind behind the Bluth Company and its crimes. At a stockholders' party on the Queen Mary, she sold the company to Stan Sitwell, who had been trying to take it over, for 12% above market value after CEO Michael cried during his speech and made the company look bad. Seconds later, the boat was surrounded by the SEC because Lucille's adopted son Annyong had ratted her out to the government to get revenge for her ruining his grandfather's business and having him deported to Korea. Lucille tried to make a break for it, but it looked like she was about to be sent to prison by the time the episode concluded.

Supporting characters:

Oscar Bluth

At the tail end of the last episode, Oscar found out he had been conned by his brother George into impersonating him one more time. George tricked him into attending the stockholders' party on the Queen Mary by using free food to lure him there, with George somehow expecting the party to be interrupted by SEC arrest(s).

Barry Zuckerkorn

Bluth attorney Barry Zuckerkorn was fired by Michael after years of incompetence in the Season Three opener "The Cabin Show," and he wasn't seen for the rest of the series. Since the Bluths were his only clients, he began contemplating a career in prostitution after he was fired. Zuckerkorn was written out of the series so that actor Henry Winkler could star in the short-lived CBS sitcom Out of Practice.

Annyong

Annyong stopped appearing regularly midway through Season Two after Lucille sent him the Milford School, where he learned to be neither seen nor heard. He spent his time surveilling the Bluths to gather evidence on them, ratting Lucille out to the SEC in revenge for her stealing his grandfather's invention of the frozen banana decades earlier and deporting him to Korea.

Stan Sitwell

Bluth competitor Stan Sitwell bought the company from Lucille for 12% above market value at George Sr.'s exoneration party onboard the Queen Mary.

Lucille Austero

Lucille 2 hasn't been seen since the Season Two episode "Ready, Aim, Marry Me," in which she sold her stake in the Bluth Company to Stan Sitwell, who ended up buying the company outright the following season anyway.

Kitty Sanchez

Kitty fled with Tobias to Reno at the end of Season Two, but she left him for George Sr., who was hiding out by traveling with the Blue Man Group at the time. Like Barry Zuckerkorn, she hasn't been seen since the Season Three premiere.

Steve Holt

Steve Holt stopped appearing midway through Season Three after finding out that GOB was his biological father. Maeby broke up with him in earlier in the season after finding out they were cousins, but they turned out not to be blood relatives due to Lindsay being adopted.

Ann Veal

Ann was last seen in the Season Three finale, screaming after George Michael punched GOB, whom she was dating when the series ended originally.

Franklin

GOB's puppet Franklin was redyed to his natural color in Season Three and was last seen acting as Nellie's (Justine Bateman) pimp "Frank" with GOB in the episode before the finale.

How Stella Kicked Off the Internet Comedy Boom

by Matt Domino

Because we live in a time of comedic plenty, it’s hard to remember what life was like before the comedy boom. YouTube was only invented in 2005 and, as recently as ten years ago, a person had to do some serious digging to find something funny on the Internet — outside of some lame joke that a friend or family member forced down your throat on a chain e-mail that was most likely sent from an AOL or Hotmail account.

Some would argue that current age of online comedy began with the advent of YouTube; while others would state that Funny or Die started the trend in 2007; still others would fervently make the case that The Lonely Island’s viral videos were the driving force behind forming the online comedic landscape as we currently know it. However, I firmly believe that this Golden Age of Comedy was started way back in 1998 when David Wain, Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black began producing their Stella Shorts.

In September of 2003, I entered my freshman year of college. While my first few weeks of school revolved around making friends, meeting girls and figuring out the best way to consistently buy beer, the most formative event happened one lazy Sunday afternoon in my dorm room. I was on my computer chatting with my high school girlfriend at the time, foolishly trying to maintain a long distance relationship. Next to me, my roommate was on his laptop watching some kind of movie. At one point, I glanced over and saw a guy dressed in a pilgrim costume jerking off a black dildo underneath a wobbly table.

“What the fuck are you watching?!” I asked.

“Stella,” my roommate said.

“What the hell is Stella?”

My roommate told me that Stella was the name of a comedy group who created “shorts” that were absurd, perverted, but hilarious. I pulled my chair up next to him, leaving my AIM window and girlfriend idle, and proceeded to go down a rabbit hole that consumed the rest of my freshman year and, in essence, the rest of my life as a zealous comedy fan.

Though many people my age first learned about the genius of Wain, Showalter and Black from Wet Hot American Summer or The State, my first glimpse into their world was through the Stella shorts.

Today, we're used to big name actors and actresses interacting with our favorite comedians in podcasts and digital shorts such as Wainy Days among many others (I mean, Jon Hamm has become the king of this), but back in 2003, seeing Paul Rudd search for hot dogs in the woods while three funny guys I had never seen before made masturbation jokes was a bit of a shock. Wait, the guy from Clueless and all those Jennifer Aniston romantic comedies is making jokes about burning babies in this random home video that was shot in someone’s backyard?

Sam Rockwell was, and still is, a very serious character actor capable of playing extremely difficult parts (see Moon). In 2003, I knew him from Galaxy Quest, The Green Mile, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, but when he made an appearance in the Stella short “Bored” and put a cigarette out in his palm, ate pizza with denchers and screamed, “Do you think I’m some kind of sloppy wet pussy for you to fuck!” it was a revelation. Nothing I had ever watched completely tore down the barriers of celebrity or the seemingly distant idea of “show business.” Sure, there was Saturday Night Live, but that was on NBC where cursing and dildos were most certainly not allowed.

Bradley Cooper is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood now. He is a male lead capable of carrying one of the largest broad comedy franchises in recent memory as well as starring in Oscar worthy romantic comedies. Yet, before all that he was Bill Zebub (Beelzebub) in “Raking Leaves,” where he played straight to jokes about anal suppositories and genital crabs, dry humped David Wain, groped Mother Nature (played by Happy Gilmore and Modern Family star Julie Bowen), and was beaten up by the Stella guys — all before participating in a joyous group hug where everyone jumps and yells, “We did it!”

The Stella shorts celebrated a kind of irreverent and juvenile comedy that completely struck home with me for better for worse. In many ways, it was the perfect kind of humor for college; you stumble into constantly surreal scenarios where nothing matters and there are no consequences and you can act like an arrogant smart ass and (mostly) get away with it. There’s room for funny voices, slapstick, shtick, and prop comedy. Sure, it may alienate some people, but the people that really get it (and you) will really get the joke. In a way, it was a comedic test to find the people that were going to be my actual friends — and not just college acquaintances. I still talk to my freshman year roommate every day.

In a larger sense, the Stella shorts were on the ground floor of a comedy movement towards the surreal and the homemade. Most of the Stella shorts were filmed at Michael Ian Black’s house in Westchester or at the various homes of the group’s friends. Everything was down and dirty and rough around the edges. In a commentary on the DVD, David Wain explains that he convinced Michael Showalter to do one of the shorts by promising that the entire thing would be “done in less than an hour.”

From 2003 on, both the careers of the guys in Stella and the digital short movement took off. First there was YouTube, then The Lonely Island and their collaborations with Justin Timberlake on Saturday Night Live. David Wain started directing major studio comedies starring Paul Rudd, Jennifer Aniston, Alan Alda and Elizabeth Banks while producing the much beloved Wainy Days online, which featured a wide variety of celebrity cameos. The members of The State all gained a newfound level of fame through Reno 911 and the release of The State complete series DVD.

Now, you can’t go a day without finding a new web series or online sketch starring a comedian you love that features a cameo from a leading man or woman from TV or the movies. There is an overarching sense that all comedians and celebrities have a means to make the kind of content they want with the friends they want to make it with. The production values have constantly improved, but the spirit of pushing the boundaries of your identity as a celebrity and doing things that will just be fun, funny and irreverent exists in nearly all digital/online comedy. And that spirit really started with Stella.

Chocolate Dipped Frozen Bananas

by Alexandra Penfold

Every Arrested Development fan knows that there's always money in the banana stand...but what kind of bananas are there? Well, thanks to the Bluth's Original Frozen Banana Stand wiki I was able to track down the menu. The recipe below is for basic chocolate dipped frozen bananas with or without nuts, but check out the slideshow to see some make-at-home versions of the Bluth creations and feel free to let your creativity guide you. I used peanuts here, but you can use your favorite nut or mix and match.

About the author: Alexandra Penfold is mild-mannered literary agent by day, food ninja by night. Never one to skip dessert she's the Brownie half of Blondie & Brownie, a Midtown Lunch contributor, and co-author of New York à la Cart: Recipes and Stories from the Big Apple's Best Food Trucks. Special equipment: 12 popsicle sticks

Ingredients

serves Serves 12, active time 30 minutes, total time 2 hours 30 minutes

  • 6 large bananas
  • 12 ounces dark chocolate, melted in the microwave or double boiler
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 cups nuts, medium coarsely chopped (optional)

Procedures

  1. Slice bananas in half and carefully mount on Popsicle sticks. Place bananas on a tray, plate or baking dish in the freezer for 2 hours or until firm. You can freeze up to overnight. Do not cover bananas as this will cause ice crystals to form.

  2. In a medium bowl whisk together melted chocolate and coconut oil until thoroughly combined. Place nuts in a wide, shallow plate or pie plate (if using).

  3. Remove bananas from freezer. If ice crystals have formed on the bananas use a paper towel to gently brush them off. Dip banana in chocolate and swirl to cover. Alternately you can use a spoon to help cover and ensure even chocolate distribution.

  4. Roll bananas in chopped nuts. Let cool for 1 minute, Then place on a serving platter. If you don't plan on serving the bananas immediately, return them to the freezer for up to a few hours. If serving from freezer, place on plate and allow to thaw for 10 minutes before serving.

A Gunman Called Papaco (1986) Mário Vaz Filho

by noreply@blogger.com (David Arthur)
 A Gunman Called Papaco (1986)
aka Um Pistoleiro Chamado Papaco
Genre: Adult | Western | Comedy
Country: Brazil | Director: Mário Vaz Filho
Language: Portuguese | Subtitles: English (.srt file)
Aspect ratio: 1.33:1 | Length: 70mn
Vhsrip Xvid Avi - 512x384 - 29.970fps - 599mb
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0459011/

Papaco is a kick-ass gunman on his way to deliver an important parcel of sex-toys, contained in a coffin that he drags from location to location. Along the way, Papaco runs into several unsavory characters (including a midget pistolieri played by Chumbinho, of FUK FUK A BRASILEIRA "fame"), and several savory females who both help and hinder him during his travails...

A Gunman Called Papaco (aka Um Pistoleiro Chamado Papaco) is another one of the weirdest, funniest porn films coming out of Brazil. It's a cowboy comedy that homages spaghetti westerns (including blatantly ripping off Ennio Morricone scores!) and has gay cowboy sex years before Brokeback Mountain made it popular.

hípster, un término adaptado al español

by apelaez@fundeu.es

Pero también nos hablan de su trayectoria mientras suenan los temas Jump star, Panic, That RocknRoll beat, The night Bo Diddley came to town, Ghost of the surfer girl, Hang around with you y Wheres the life of the party.

Juggalos Are OK, Cupid

by Harry Cheadle
Snob

Este artigo. Gracias, revista VICE.

Screenshot via OkCupid Juggalos

Something like 70 percent of the internet is people going, “Hey did you see this cute/funny/sad/tragic/OMG/WTF/fail thing?” and passing around the meme du jour—a wacky crime story from Florida, an amazing photo of natural phenomenon that just has to be seen to be believed, a fake video of an eagle snatching a kid in a park, a cat that looks like something other than a cat. Yesterday, the hot, clickable content being viewed, blogged, reblogged, shared, and no doubt monetized was a Tumblr called OkCupid Juggalos.

Juggalos, of course, are diehard fans of the crypto-Christian rap duo Insane Clown Posse, and OkCupid is a really popular free online dating site. Combine the two things, and you get awkward, posturing selfies of men and women with painted faces and poorly done tattoos, coupled with their ungrammatical statements about being “chill,” loving Faygo, and being “crazy.” Hilarious.

The site is part of a subgenre of Tumblrs devoted to pointing out people, usually men, who have bizarre OkCupid profiles that sometimes make them sound like psychopaths or rapists. (It’s such a popular trope that OkCupid Juggalos isn’t even the only Tumblr devoted to Juggalos on OkCupid.)  OkCupid Goldmine documents a grab bag of creeps and weirdos; Okc_ebooks gets gullible users to respond to messages that are actually gibberish tweets from bot/poet @Horse_ebooks; the creator of OkCupid Enemies sought out people who weren’t good matches for him or her to find freakish profiles (that one’s apparently now defunct); Fedoras of OKC targets the usually nerdy, Reddit-using, neck-bearded gamer types who think they look good in fedoras; and Nice Guys of OkCupid (also defunct) went after dudes who claimed to be “nice guys” but were clearly entitled, misogynistic dicks who had some fucked-up thoughts about women.

That last one sparked a mini debate in feminist corners of the internet—is it really OK to publicly mock these guys, who are usually socially awkward and unsuccessful in love as it is? The argument made by Hugo Schwyzer in Jezebel was that it’s fine, since “mockery, in this instance, isn't so much about being cruel as it is about publicly rejecting the Nice Guys' sense of entitlement to both sex and sympathy.” So as long as you can come up with a good enough reason to be an asshole on the internet—it’s not about the individual guys you’re shaming, it’s about societal misogyny, or something—you’re in the clear.

But as Ally Fogg wrote in response to Hugo, as detestable as the “archetype” of the Nice Guy misogynist is, “archetypes don’t have to pluck up the courage to join a dating site and then go through the awkward steps of creating a clumsy profile... Archetypes don’t suffer if their fragile self-esteem is kicked into the dirt and trampled on. People do.”

That’s what makes me feel crappy when I scroll through Tumblrs like these. The idea of a socially awkward dude whose main social outlet is the internet putting on a stupid hat because he thinks it will help him get a date is funny. But shitting on this guy because he’s into My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and has both a gun collection and a knife collection is just laughing at him because he’s different. Haha, his values are weird, he must be a loser. What makes it worse is that many of these people are young men who might have had rocky, awkward adolescences and are still learning how to connect romantically with others. Amid the genuinely disturbed dudes who are openly sexist and racist are people like this guy, from Fedoras of OKC:

He’s a kid who is trying his best to look good. Yeah, the tie with skulls on it and the cartoonish hat aren’t great, but he’s putting himself out there. Putting together an online dating profile that makes you look attractive and not like all the other fish in the vast, horny sea is pretty goddamn hard. Taking a screenshot and pointing and laughing is easy.

It’s even easier when your victims are already one of the most hated subcultures in America. Juggalos are obsessed with a rap group most people regard as a shitty punchline; they’re considered a “gang” by the FBI even though they organize charity activities and prayer groups. They have their own slang and soda preference and identify themselves—proudly, in spite of all the scorn—by painting their faces. And when they’re looking for love online, they don’t hide the fact that they’re down with the clown.

As McBain would say, “That’s the joke.”

If they didn’t have their faces painted and weren’t posing like extras in a low-budget remake of The Warriors—that is, if they weren’t openly celebrating the culture and music that’s important to them—the OkCupid Juggalos would be regarded as portraits of loneliness and need, and they wouldn’t be nearly as clickable. Some examples (the text overlaid on the photos was lifted from the Juggalos' profiles by the person running the Tumblr):

Is it funny that he has acne? Or that he is letting people he might want to date know about a potentially unattractive feature? Maybe it’s supposed to be humorous that he might be painting his face because he’s embarrassed about his scars?

Haha, this guy gets panic attacks and tends to get emotionally attached to people he likes! He probably has a tough time dating! LOL

The only explanation for this one being on the Tumblr is that the guy is making a weird face—surely, no one thinks it's funny he's passionate about finding homes for animals, right?

Here’s a nod to the lineage from which OkCupid Juggalos comes—this entry lets the audience bask in the satisfaction of knowing that both Nice Guys and Juggalos are worthy of derision. I guess you’re supposed to ignore the sadness of a guy who hasn’t been in a “successful relationship” trying to connect with someone online.

This kid is clearly young, not conventionally attractive, and, if what he wrote isn’t a joke, a McDonald’s employee—but he’s got a nice, self-deprecating sense of humor about his situation. If the point of putting this on Tumblr is what I think it is—Ha! Look at this dumb guy! He works at McDonald’s!—it’s shockingly mean. The humor is based on him being different, and one of the things that makes him different is that he doesn’t have much money.

“Juggalos tend to be poor and uneducated, from economically depressed small towns and broken homes,” Nathan Rabin noted in the AV Club last year. It’s not considered kosher even by asshole-on-the-internet standards to make fun of someone for not having enough money, or being born into circumstances that would make being head fry cook something worth bragging about in a half-kidding way. But if the target is a Juggalo? Apparently it’s open season on just straight-up giggling at his or her vulnerabilities and poverty and cultural differences.

Fortunately, there’s room on the internet for all of us. No doubt Juggalos will find other Juggalos and fall in love and have baby Juggalos no matter how much snarky scorn gets tossed their way. In other words, they don’t want to date you either, asshole.
