Why Slower Drivers Shouldn't Hang Out In the Left Lane

by Patrick Allan

The left lane is for passing and slower traffic should keep right. It’s one of the first things you learn when you get your driver’s license, yet so many drivers forget it or don’t understand it. Here’s a detailed explanation for why this simple rule is so important.

A little girl in my 4th grade class came up to me after recess and said, “I got married at recess!” and I said “Oh? I didn’t know anyone was ordained under the age of twelve.” and she asked me what ordained meant and I explained and then she said “Oh, well, no, my wife and I were married by the slide, but we’ll be happy together anyway.”

So apparently on school playgrounds, slides are already legalizing same-sex marriage.

Konceptbaserat tänkande

by Martina

Jag lägger upp bilder på min mat på instagram och jag heter Highfatfitness där. Alla bilder är inte jättevackra, men man ser hur jag äter i alla fall för de som är intresserade. Min senaste matbild var den här:

meat and carrots

Welcome To Night Vale's Cecil Baldwin Shares That He is HIV-Positive

by Beth Elderkin

The Voice of Night Vale is opening up about being diagnosed with HIV, and shutting down stigmas about living with the disease.

Cecil Baldwin, an actor most famous for his role on the popular Welcome To Night Vale podcast, chatted on Seriously TV’s show “Shutting Down Bulls!*t” with host Dylan Marron, who plays Cecil’s boyfriend Carlos on the podcast. During the interview, Baldwin revealed that he is HIV-positive and that the fears associated with HIV are outdated.

“We’re at this age in 2016 where so many people in America and worldwide have HIV and are living with it,” he said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1.2-million Americans are currently living with HIV, with gay and bisexual men, especially African-American men, most affected. Baldwin’s reveal has inspired a wave of positive response online, with more people coming out about being HIV-positive, living with someone who is or simply wanting to get rid of the stigma.

We have seen progression over the past decade, thanks to increased HIV testing and better support for people living with HIV. The number of new people being diagnosed with HIV has gone down, and the life expectancy of those living with the disease has improved (though it’s still 13 years shorter than for HIV-negative people).

Baldwin first found out he was HIV-positive during a routine STD check-up shortly after moving to New York City, and he talked about how devastating that news was for him. He said he went into a “period of mourning” and was tempted to move back home with his parents.

However, an experience at a tattoo parlor turned that around. Baldwin talked about having to fill out a consent form, which included the question “Are you HIV-positive?”

“It was the first time my status had been brought up in an everyday situation outside of the doctor’s office,” Baldwin said. “[The tattoo artist] just looked at me and said ‘My sister has it; it’s not a big deal.’”

While Baldwin mentioned that the HIV stigma is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, like during the AIDS Scare of the 1980s, he still fears prejudice and discrimination. For example, when he’s traveling the country (like for Welcome To Night Vale live shows) and has to go to a new pharmacy for his HIV medication. There are still plenty of myths and stereotypes surrounding HIV, even today.

The most common myth? That being HIV-positive means you’re “dirty.” Well, Cecil Baldwin doesn’t have time for that bullshit.

“I’m HIV-positive, and bitch, I shower every day,” he said.

Deadbugs Are an Underrated Core Exercise You Should Be Doing

by Stephanie Lee on Vitals, shared by Andy Orin to Lifehacker

Despite the weird name, “deadbug”s work your core unlike any other exercise. Crunches and sit-ups do very little to resist letting your back arch and “extend,” which can then contribute to posture problems and low back, knee, and hip pain. This is where deadbugs come in.

March … I Mean April … I Mean May … I Mean June … I mean July 2016 Is the 6th … I Mean 7th… I Mean 8th … I Mean 9th… I Mean 10th Temperature Record-Breaking Month in a Row

by Phil Plait

N.B. If this article sounds familiar, it should. This has been happening so frequently I just copied the post for March April May June and updated it.

October. November. December. January. February. March. April. May. June. And now July.

For the

sixth seventh eighth ninth 10 th month in a row, we’ve had a month that has broken the global high temperature record.

According to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies,

March April May June July 2016 was the hottest March April May June July on record, going back 136 years. It was a staggering 1.28°C 1.11°C 0.93°C 0.79°C 0.84° C above average across the planet. * The previous March April May June July record, from 2010 2014 2015 2011, was 0.92° 0.87° 0.86° 0.78° 0.74° above average; the new record beats it by a full tenth of a degree.

Welcome to the new normal, and our new world.

Note: NASA has created a short video describing its efforts to measure global warming, specifically pointing out that the first six months of 2016 have all been the hottest months on record of their kind:

As you can see from the map above, much of this incredible heat spike is located in the extreme northern latitudes. That is not good; it’s this region that’s most fragile to heating. Temperatures soaring to 7° or more above normal means more ice melting, a longer melting season, loss of thinner ice, loss of longer-term ice, and most alarmingly the dumping of billions of tons of fresh water into the saltier ocean which can and will disrupt the Earth’s ability to move that heat around.

What’s going on? El Niño might be the obvious culprit, but in fact it’s only contributing a small amount of overall warming to the globe, probably around 0.1° C or so. That’s not nearly enough to account for this. It’s almost certain that even without El Niño we’d be experiencing record heat.

Most likely there is a confluence of events going on to produce this huge spike in temperature—latent heat in the Pacific waters, wind patterns distributing it, and more.

And underlying it all, stoking the fire, is us. Humans. Climate scientists—experts who have devoted their lives to studying and understanding how this all works—agree to an extraordinary degree that humans are responsible for the heating of our planet.

That’s why we’re seeing so many records lately; El Niño might produce a spike, but that spike is sitting on top of an upward trend, the physical manifestation of human induced global warming, driven mostly by our dumping 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air every year.

Until our politicians recognize that this is a threat, and a very serious one, things are unlikely to change much. And the way I see it, the only way to get our politicians to recognize that is to change the politicians we have in office.

That’s a new world we need, and one I sincerely hope we make happen.

*GISS uses the temperatures from 1951–1980 to calculate the average. The Japanese Meteorological Agency uses 1981–2010, which gives different anomaly numbers, but the trend remains the same. Realistically, the range GISS uses is better; by 1981 global warming was already causing average temperatures to rise.

You may have noticed that the actual temperature anomaly for each month over March through July appears to be dropping; 1.28 to 1.11 to 0.93 to 0.79 (though this month was bumped up to 0.84°). That may be due to El Niño weakening, but it’s hard to know over such a short time period. Even if the trend continues, I’d bet 2016 will be the hottest year on record.

Alan Tudyk Takes a Spacewalk of Shame in the Con Man Season Two Trailer

by Germain Lussier
Alan Tudyk Takes a Spacewalk of Shame in the Con Man Season Two Trailer

Con Man is the star-studded parody show created by the ubiquitous Alan Tudyk, where he and Nathan Fillion play parody versions of themselves as they traverse the world of comic book conventions. Season two is coming soon and the first trailer is finally here.

(It actually debuted at San Diego Comic-Con but just now arrived online.)

The core of season two is a musical version of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, titled “I’m With Stupid” (which isn’t actually mentioned in this trailer). In the show’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con, Tudyk explained that this idea was almost totally born out of Lou Ferrigno.

After meeting Ferrigno for years at various cons and the two of them talking about how they wanted to work together, Tudyk found himself talking to the Hulk TV actor about Of Mice and Men. And a lightbulb went off.

“That one little thing spawned all of that craziness,” said Tudyk. And though you’d expect Ferrigno to play Lenny, that’s not the case on this season of Con Man—he plays George with Tudyk as Lenny. “There’s no one else who could have done it,” Tudyk said. “Without Lou, it doesn’t happen.”

From there, Tudyk explained how the show will continue to poke fun at Con culture. “There are so many more things to write about,” Tudyk said. “[You walk around a con and say] ‘This is the only place that would happen.’ Events you want to exploit for comedy because the stakes are so high and magic can happen.“

Another notable moment happened during a Q&A when a fan asked if Joss Whedon cameo-ing on the show gave Tudyk an opportunity to “Whedon”
him,—a.k.a. kill him—like Joss does to so many of his characters, including Tudyk’s on Firefly. “That’s a great idea for season 3,” Tudyk responded.

Con Man season two will premiere on Comic-Con HQ in November.

Everything the Discovery Can Tell Us About the New Star Trek Show

by Katharine Trendacosta
Everything the Discovery Can Tell Us About the New Star Trek Show

CBS merely announced the name of the upcoming Star Trek TV series, and gave us the briefest glimpse of its titular ship, the Discovery. What could it possibly reveal about the show? Well, if you’re a Star Trek nerd like we are, it can tell you a lot—including when in the timeline the series might take place.

The Discovery is pretty obviously based on Ralph McQuarrie’s design of the Enterprise for the never-made Star Trek: Planet of the Titans. Here’s the Discovery:

Everything the Discovery Can Tell Us About the New Star Trek Show
Screenshot by author

And here’s McQuarrie’s design:

Everything the Discovery Can Tell Us About the New Star Trek Show
Image via Memory Alpha

Star Trek: Discovery executive producer Bryan Fuller was asked how much the Discovery was influenced by this design, and his answer was that it was “to a point that we can’t legally comment on it until we figure out some things.” So maybe the design of the ship will change between now and when the show actually comes out—in fact, executive producer Heather Kadin has said that this design isn’t final.

But, assuming the ship stays the fundamentally the same, there are some interesting details to note. First is that there were actual models produced based on McQuarrie’s designs. And, even though Planet of the Titans was never made, the models have shown up in Star Trek.

According to Memory Alpha, the Star Trek canon wiki, one of the models turns up in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, docked near the Enterprise. Another one made an appearance in the Next Generation episode “Unification I.” Both of them are supposedly also in the rubble of the Borg attack at Wolf 359 in “Best of Both Worlds, Part II.”

That does make is possible that this flatter, more angular design was prevalent in Starfleet during the time of the movies, and that maybe the ships seen in The Next Generation were older ships. Another option is that the design is a class of ships that was made during that period. Either way, this might support the rumor that the show will be set in the period after the Undiscovered Country and before The Next Generation.

(UPDATE: A rumor that Bryan Fuller has denied.)

Everything the Discovery Can Tell Us About the New Star Trek Show

This is further backed up by the fact that the Discovery is registered as NCC-1031. There’s no canonical reasoning behind the numbers, but the Enterprise is NCC-1701, the Defiant from Deep Space 9 is NX-74205 (“NX” denoting experimental or prototype ships), and Voyager from Voyager was NCC-74656. All the later ships have five numbers. The Discovery, with four like the Enterprise and without a letter like the later Enterprises, might be older. Assuming that Starfleet does the logical thing and numbers its ships in production order, the Discovery might even be older than the Enterprise.

As for the ship name, there was a starship Discovery in operation during The Next Generation. It had a tiny, tiny mention in the first season episode “Conspiracy.” It shows up in Starfleet’s files, where an order regarding the Discovery’s rendezvous and personnel transfers with other ships is read by Data.

Since Star Trek: Discovery does take place in the prime universe, that means it shares continuity with that episode. It’s likely not the same ship, but if this show is set before The Next Generation, it’s nice to know that it still has a namesake in the 24th century.

Mozilla: Flash’s Firefox Days Are Numbered

by JLister

flashlogo

Mozilla has become the latest browser maker to start phasing out support for Flash. It will start blocking some elements next month before a total block next year.

The developer says it has already tweaked Firefox to reduce the reliance on plugins for features such as video streaming and microphone access. But it says its expanding that program because having stability and usability failures in order to get enhanced Web experiences is no longer “a trade-off users should have to accept.”

The gradual program will start next month when Firefox will block a specific list of Flash content types that it says are invisible to users. The list will only include content where there’s a specific HTML alternative available to developers and the list will be expanded over time.

The next step will come later this year when Mozilla will block any Flash that is used “to check content viewability” which is something that’s mainly used for what have been dubbed supercookies. Again, the change will come only as and when an equivalent HTML API is available.

The gradual approach won’t last forever. At some point in 2017 (on what should perhaps be called F Day) Mozilla will introduce a blanket rule that any Flash plugin is blocked by default and can only be run after a user clicks to activate it. Mozilla is strongly suggesting developers switch to HTML alternatives before that policy takes effect.

George R.R. Martin pointed out a ‘Fantastic Four’ plothole to Stan Lee in 1964

by Dan Selcke
Oakfairy

Sounds like your kind of guy, doesn't he? ;)

It ends up A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin was always a stickler for detail. Redditor kirke0222 recently posted a very telling letter a 16-year-old Martin wrote to legendary comic book pioneers Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1964, regarding a plot point in their Fantastic Four comic, then in its early days. Read on:

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 2.38.10 PM

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 2.39.04 PM

This letter was published in Fantastic Four volume one, issue No. 32, in 1964.

I don’t what I love more: that George R.R. Martin was already developing a very descriptive writing style at such a young age (“hydrogen bombs exploded inside my brain and I was swept away by the sheer magnificence of it”), or that he was so polite to Lee and Kirby while criticizing their work.

And I can’t help but see shades of the author Martin would become here. A Song of Ice and Fire is marked by, among other things, Martin’s prodigious attention to detail. Fans can complain that books like A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons meander somewhat, but it’s hard to complain that their plots don’t hold up under scrutiny. Of course that kid wouldn’t be satisfied that Red Ghost suddenly showed up with a cadre of obedient super-powered apes when they’d been furious with him mere issues before.

Young George R.R. Martin will suffer none of your foolishness.

Young George R.R. Martin will suffer none of your foolishness.

(This image is from George R.R. Martin’s website, and looks to show him at 18.)

To their credit, Lee and Kirby responded, matching Martin’s good humor.

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 3.10.27 PM

So a deadline forced Lee and Kirby to forget a plot detail, huh? The long waits between Song of Ice and Fire books are starting to make more sense.
