Ranking The Dresden Files

by Meghan Ball

Ever since he blew onto the scene in 2000, Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden has helped to redefine what we think of when we think of urban fantasy. Where would the genre be without the reluctant wizard private investigator from Chicago?

For eighteen years, Butcher has delighted fans with the exploits of his snarky, technology-phobic wizard, filling the 15 novels (and two short story collections) to date with a stable full to bursting with memorable villains and introducing  us to side characters cool enough to become archetypes themselves. From Mouse, the big dog, to Bob the sarcastic skull, these are… people (?) whom you won’t soon forget.

I’ve read this series since it began. At the start, I’d routinely spend my lunch money on the latest release; later, I’d crunch the numbers while at my university’s Barnes & Noble, trying to figure out how I could grab the next volume and still pay for my textbooks. The Dresden Files were my introduction to urban fantasy and for that I will always be grateful. The genre has become a mainstay of SFF, and in part, we have a snarky wizard in a duster with a broken down VW Beetle to thank for that.

In honor of today’s release of the latest Dresden Files short story collection, Brief Cases, and to keep myself busy while I wait in earnest for Harry’s 16th case (work on the long-delayed novel is said to be underway!), I’ve wracked my brain and poured over every novel so far to come up with rankings of each book. Eighteen years of my life well spent! With a tip of my hat to Harry’s favorite saying (“Hell’s Bells!”) the books are ranked from least best to best, and graded on a scale of 1 to 5 bells, with 5 being perfect. (And before you get too up in arms, remember: I recommend every volume of this series wholeheartedly, and grade them only in comparison to one another.)

Book 12: Changes
Unpopular opinion alert: plenty of fans rank this with the best of the series, but it’s on the bottom for me. With a title like that, you know something big is afoot. But the changes, when they come, aren’t quite as impactful as you might think. The reintroduction of Harry’s old girlfriend, who brings with her a surprise for him, have the bubbly scent of soap opera drama, and distract from the character journey Butcher has spent so many books building. This is the second book in the series that feels like a potential speed bump (we’ll get to the first in a minute), but readers would be missing out if they don’t get by it and head on to book 13. While it is full of “heck yeah” fist-pumping action and the promise of some big changes to the status quo, the ending is a bucket of cold water in the face, a shock that might leave some readers feeling betrayed. 1 out of 5 bells

Book 13: Ghost Story
Harry Dresden is just a little bit dead at the moment, felled by an unknown assassin’s bullet. Stripped of all his tricks, Harry must solve the case of his own murder and find a way back into the land of the living before it’s too late. This book moves slowly as Dresden comes to grips with his new reality. It’s heavy on the flashbacks and (a bit understandably) suffers from character inertia. Murphy refuses to investigate Dresden’s death, making his work from the other side harder than it needs to be. However, in Harry’s absence, we meet new characters with tons of promise—just the breath of fresh air the novel needed. 2 out of 5 bells

Book 6: Blood Rites
This is a rough one, mainly because it can be rather cringy. Chicago’s only wizard PI accepts a plea for help from a vampire friend and soon finds himself on a porn set, of all things, trying to find out how so many of the actresses are dying. There is a vampire subplot that makes things feel a bit overstuffed as well, like maybe Butcher stuck two books together to save time. Despite that, it contains one of the biggest turning points yet in the series. 3 out of 5 bells

Book 11: Turn Coat
Here, the format starts to work against Dresden. The series relied on a predictable format, volume after volume, and this is the first one where that feels like a hindrance. The plot is a little predictable, and while the magic isn’t gone, it was definitely clear the series needed to grow to prevent itself from getting stale. I expected fireworks, considering it concludes a rivalry that has dogged Harry since the very beginning. Unfortunately, it never quite crackles like I’d hoped. 2 out of 5 bells

Book 3: Grave Peril
I always felt like this book could be a stumbling block for new readers. There’s a lot of plot, and\ much happens off stage, as it were. It’s all connected to a mystery Harry and Murphy previously solved in the months before the events of this book, a decision that always felt disjointed to me (on first read, it can feel like you missed a book in-between). It’s just a brief downshift before the awesomeness that is book four, but still worth reading—who doesn’t love a good ghost story? 2 out of 5 bells

Book 14: Cold Days
Harry is (mostly) back to being alive, thanks to Queen Mab of the Faeries, who sends him on an impossible mission to pay her back for the favor. He has 24 hours to kill an immortal. Sure, why not? That should be a cake walk for the likes of Harry Dresden. Harry is still chewing on some of the deep thoughts that come with coming back from the dead, and is trying to sort out how to deal with Mab’s meddling. His new job as her Winter Knight messes with his emotions, making him angry, and (slightly worryingly) obsessed with sex, a slightly bizarre digression that detracts from some of the cooler parts of the book. Either way, we’re in another upswing. The series has bite again. 3 out of 5 bells

Book 5: Death Masks
This novel is a bridge builder, introducing new factions into the series and setting up new and major complications for our favorite Chicago wizard. Consequently, while still a fast-paced romp, it ends with more of a whisper than a bang. Meeting the new players is worth the price of admission, though. We learn more about the wizards and their rules, and how Dresden has broken them time and time again. 3 out of 5 bells

Book 10: Small Favor
The faeries are back! Man, Butcher writes some great faeries. Dresden has really come into his own now, and this novel feels like a building crescendo—like everything is swaying and threatening to topple right over. This is a story about the bonds the wizard has built over 10 books, and it sees Harry reliant on his friends and allies more than ever. When his back is against the wall, he learns he has people he can truly count on. He isn’t alone anymore. Harry is also much more assured of his powers, and feels like he’s leveled up from his earlier adventures. Yet at some point, something’s got to give. 3 out of 5 bells

Book 1: Storm Front
The book that started it all. Storm Front is our introduction to the world of Harry Dresden, Chicago wizard and private eye. It’s a fun novel, laying down a lot of what will become tropes in urban fantasy. It introduces us to many of the characters we will grow to love, such as Bob the skull and homicide detective Karrin Murphy. It’s aged a little poorly with time, but it’s still a crackerjack start to one of the most iconic urban fantasy series of the modern era. 3 out of 5 bells

Book 9: White Knight
Here, the Dresden Files is really hitting its stride, to the point that this truly ripping good adventure can almost be excused as just another solid entry in what has become an iconic series. Butcher keeps upping the stakes, pitting Harry against enemies ]new and old while trying to maintain a delicate web of alliances. It’s a hard balancing act, but somehow he’s managing it. For now. This book follows the now tried and true Dresden Files pattern: there’s a crime, Dresden goes to investigate, and shenanigans ensue. This volume offers several long-in-coming payoffs, with various long-running plot lines reaching resolutions. 4 out of 5 bells

Book 15: Skin Game
The most recent volume brought the series back with a bang. Harry is drawn into a heist plot with some of his biggest enemies, and must learn to work with them if he wants to get out of his adventure alive. It’s a return to form for the series, full of Butcher’s patented humor and magic. Harry, while deeply unhappy with his current gig as Winter Knight, seems to be back to his old tricks and making it work. It’s a fun outing that delivers the action of the first few volumes. The only bad part is that we’ve been waiting for the followup for three years now. (Fun fact: This volume was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel.) 4 out of 5 bells

Book 2: Fool Moon
Who doesn’t love werewolves? I mean, apart from Harry Dresden, who has to solve a murder in which all signs point to a shapeshifter as the culprit. Butcher builds on his first novel, setting up the formula and cementing his characters. We get some tantalizing hints about Harry’s backstory, and strap in for intriguing worldbuilding. All in all, a very solid sophomore novel. 4 out of 5 bells.

Book 8: Proven Guilty
Harry grows a lot in this book. We’re swiftly learning there’s no true good or bad in this world: “good” organizations do terrible things in the name of righteousness, and the “bad guys” are sometimes helpful and kind. Dresden turns away from the wizard council, trying to find ferret out a black magic user before they do. The council’s barbaric treatment of anyone who even puts a toe out of line turns Harry’s stomach. The morality of the series becomes more interesting as Butcher blends in new shades of gray. 4 out of 5 bells

Book 7: Dead Beat
And who doesn’t love necromancers? I mean (again), apart from Harry Dresden. Who can blame him, when they are out to thoroughly ruin the life of his best friend, Karrin Murphy? This is a book about consequences. For seven books, Harry has run around as if nothing he does has any larger ripples outside of his little world. This is when his sins and demons come back to bite him. His friends and allies are starting to wonder about his motives and his sanity. Murphy, swept up in the supernatural and the occult, is swiftly learning that a friendship with Dresden is a liability. It’s a real shift in the series, and clear hint that it’s going to get darker before the dawn. Also, Harry gets to ride a dinosaur. 4 out of 5 bells

Book 4: Summer Knight
I’ve always been a vampire girl. I can’t say no to a good (or bad) vampire book. Yet somehow, I love Butcher’s faeries even more then his vampires. There’s an cool maliciousness to them that I find irresistible. In this novel, Harry is tasked by the Winter Queen of Faerie to find out who killed her right-hand man, the Summer Knight. Harry is loathe to do this, considering his checkered history with the fae. Secrets are revealed, Dresden gets the stuffing kicked out of him. All in all, a fantastic time, and my pick for the best book in the series (so far anyway). 5 out of 5 bells

How to make Lazyoli, the emergency aioli for urgent dipping needs

by Kate Bernot on The Takeout, shared by Virginia K. Smith to Lifehacker

What can’t you put aioli on, really? Sandwiches, fries (which are subsequently elevated to “frites”), burgers, fried chicken, fried shrimp, fried anything really. It’s a versatile but simple condiment, essentially just a kicked-up, garlickified mayo that got itself a bougier name.

by Lars A

I printed my face to unlock my OnePlus 6 for the lulz… it worked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/rAVMq8JKBr

— rik (@rikvduijn) May 29, 2018

Android P låter användare stänga av samtliga vibrationer, ställa in styrkan

by Lars A
Android P låter användare stänga av samtliga vibrationer, ställa in styrkan

The Roci will Fly Again! The Expanse Picked Up by Amazon

by Stubby the Rocket

Break out the celebratory lasagna—The Expanse has been saved! The show will move over to Amazon’s streaming service after its third season ends on Syfy. Jeff Bezos made the announcement himself last night, after a panel at the National Space Society’s International Space Development Conference, which featured three of the show’s stars, Steven Strait, Wes Chatham, and Cas Anvar, along with showrunner Naren Shankar.

Anvar, who has been especially vocal in the #SaveTheExpanse campaign, filmed the announcement and posted it on Twitter.

The Expanse premiered on Syfy in 2015, in a slightly unusual deal that gave Syfy only first run rights, with Amazon securing the streaming rights. As the show was expensive to produce, and received fairly low ratings, Syfy finally decided to drop it despite its status as one of the best examples of true SF on television right now. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bezos, a huge fan of the James S.A. Corey’s series, was already “livid” that he lost the show to Syfy initially.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, the co-founders of Alcon Entertainment, gave an announcement that stressed the work of the fans to revive the show:

“We couldn’t be more excited that The Expanse is going to continue on Amazon Prime! We are deeply grateful that Jeff Bezos, Jen Salke, and their team at Amazon have shown such faith in our show…we also want to thank Laura Lancaster, head of Alcon Television for her tireless efforts. We are fully aware that this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the staggering outpouring of support from the most creative, hardest working sci-fi fans around the world. From reddit campaigns to airplanes, we say thank you. It worked!”

sirfrogsworth: Corgi owners ‘round the world are very excited...

sirfrogsworth:

Corgi owners ‘round the world are very excited about the Royal wedding. They are dressing up their stumpy pups to look their fanciest. Not every corgi is enthusiastic about their adorned accoutrements. But I think part of the human/corgi partnership is an unspoken competition of who can be most annoying.

There has even been a corgi Royal wedding reenactment. Although it happened before the wedding so maybe it is a pre-enactment.

And this corgi community event would not be complete without some questionable photoshops.

It looks so real!

I know people have varying opinions about the Royals and their shenanigans. But I do wish them both happiness in their romantic journey.

by Martina

Carnivore diet

Intressanta effekter

Nu till lite intressanta effekter som jag upplevde nämligen;

  1. Ingen pollenallergi
  2. Ingen katt-allergi
  3. Förbättrat luktsinne
  4. Förändrade smakpreferenser
  5. Fettminskning/viktminskning

Most Triumphant: Bill & Ted 3 Is Officially Set to Rock Our Socks Off

by Germain Lussier

Everyone involved with the Bill & Ted films has been saying, for literally years, that a third film was in the works. May 7, 2018: Back on the home front!

by Joseph Mallozzi

“You’re toothbrush passed away,”Akemi informed me today upon my return home from Montreal.

“What happened?”I asked, in several different ways at several different times that afternoon.  Her responses were always evasive:

“You’re going to get a new one.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Just passed away.”

And, finally: “Commit suicide.”

I suspect I’ll never learn the truth surrounding Mr. Bristles fate.

Anyways, I’m back in Toronto, ready to reclaim my spot on the bed from Suji and Lulu who, by all accounts, are enjoying the newfound real estate, having laid claim to half the mattress in unabashedly sprawly fashion.  I may be in for quite the battle tonight.

Also, back at it!  I have a move to plan, people to meet, a script and overview to deliver, and a lot of comic books to catch up on.

Change Your Twitter Password Now

by Nick Douglas

Twitter, a social network built to test just how much bullshit internet users will tolerate, just announced that it accidentally stored a bunch of passwords in plain text. While it was just an internal error, and everything is probably fine, you should probably change your Twitter password now. Happy Password Day!

Make Bacon Butter and Put It On Everything

by Claire Lower on Skillet, shared by Claire Lower to Lifehacker

Bacon grease and butter are glorious cooking fats. They’re reasonable priced (one comes free with bacon), deeply flavorful, and both promote a good amount of browning. Rather than choose between these two earthly delights, you should combine them to create a fantastic compound butter.

Infinity War (Spoilers)

by Jim C. Hines

We don’t make it to opening weekend for most movies, but I figured with as much time as I spend online, this would be my only chance of seeing Infinity Wars before stumbling over spoilers.

Speaking of which…spoilers after the cut!

Get This Man a Shield Meme

All right, where to start… First off, major props to Marvel for the culmination of ten years of planning and buildup. Infinity War might not have been perfect, but I can’t think of another project that comes close to the scope and ambition of this one.

Now onto Jim’s scattered post-movie thoughts.

Alas, poor Loki. Dammit, man. You’re supposed to be clever. What were you thinking? (I’m just gonna console myself by replaying the moment he tells Thanos, “We have a Hulk.”)

Heimdall dies saving…the Hulk? The leader of Asgard is right there, and you use your power and sacrifice your life sending Bruce Banner home.

Bruce Banner and Scared Hulk. The movie never comes out and says Hulk is afraid after getting trounced by Thanos, but I’m assuming that’s why Bruce can’t transform anymore. Hulk is in many ways a very young child, and I liked the way this played out. Poor Bruce is so flustered and befuddled and overwhelmed. I loved it.

Yay, banter! So glad we still got moments of character humor. Strange and Wong talking about ice cream flavors…

Screw you and the Accords you rode in on! Thank you, Rhodey! (And I loved that the hologram of Ross was noticeably shorter than everyone else.)

Wanda and Vision. One of the things that makes Marvel movies work is that they take the time to lay groundwork and build the story. That never happened with Wanda and Vision, and I found it hard to care about their relationship. It reminded me of the Bruce/Natasha thing from Age of Ultron. It just felt forced.

Thanos and Gamora. This was another relationship that didn’t feel real to me. I don’t think we saw enough of their past to understand how or why they cared about each other. What did Thanos see in Gamora that was so special? Where was the father-daughter dynamic that made Gamora weep when she thought she’d killed him?

Nebula. She didn’t get much screen time, but I liked what they did with her. The torture was rather gruesome, but helped with the Nebula/Gamora dynamic. But the way Nebula escaped, and her arrival to help try to fight Thanos, were great. I like her character more with each movie she’s in.

Thanos. Not the worst Marvel villain, but definitely not the best, either. His motivation just never made much sense. The universe is overpopulated? Um…okay. So hey, you have infinite power now. Why not double the size and resources of the universe instead of killing half the population? Same outcome, right?

Contrast Thanos with Loki or Killmonger. In both of those cases, we see why the characters made the choices they made. We see their pain and anger and ambition. We see the betrayals and the failure. We can understand and sympathize with them, even if we don’t agree. Whereas with Thanos, he’s just…there. Big and purple and powerful and out to kill half the universe because that’s what his character is supposed to do.

Thor’s eye. Thank you, Rabbit! (Loved the Thor/Rocket dynamic.)

Quill, you absolute dumbass. Half the universe died because Starlord decided to punch Thanos in the face instead of waiting a few more seconds for Tony and Peter to get the gauntlet.

Peter Dinklage! I somehow missed that he was in this movie, but I loved his character. That exchange with Thor…

“You’ll be killed!”
“Only if I die.”

Dinklage’s response and expression were absolute perfection.

Okoye, Wanda, and Natasha. I want a movie that’s nothing but these three women teaming up to kick ass and take names.

Bucky and Rocket. Also an acceptable buddy movie for which I would pay all the money.

“Kick names and take ass!” I laughed.

Bruce’s giddiness when Thor arrives for the final battle. I don’t remember his exact words, but it was sweet.

Infinity stones fall, everybody dies. You’d think the death of half the Marvel universe would have more of an emotional impact, but I wasn’t feeling it. Peter Parker fading away, and Tony Stark’s reaction, was probably the strongest. But there was just too much, and it was too obvious at least some of these deaths would be undone in the sequel. Particularly given Dr. Strange’s line about this being the only way.

Which means another thirteen months of waiting to find out who, if anyone, is really dead instead of just “mostly dead.”

I’d be really impressed if they just made Spider-Man 2 and Black Panther 2 about everyone standing around mourning the deaths of Spider-Man and Black Panther… Especially if Shuri gets to be the new Black Panther!

Captain America and Iron Man. I really expected one or both of these characters to die. I’m thinking now that’s probably going to happen in part two.

That post-credits scene. Meh. Yes, I know you’re making a Captain Marvel movie. And it was amusing getting to see Samuel L. Jackson say, “Motherfu–” before getting Voldemorted. But this scene didn’t do much for me.

Overall, it was a big, crowded, busy crossover spectacle. It’s a movie that’s incredibly broad, but at the expense of depth. Good pacing, and a lot of the character moments worked really well, considering how much work those moments had to do. A fun popcorn flick, and an impressive accomplishment nonetheless, though.*

*Okay, yeah, maybe “fun” isn’t the right word…

#

I’m not thrilled about having to wait thirteen months to finish the story, but there’s just too much for one movie. Heck, this storyline could have easily been a trilogy…it might have been better as a trilogy, really. More time to develop characters and relationships and backstory and so on.

Anyway, that’s my post-Avengers thoughts. What did you think?

Hey. I am a 29 yr old female who for a slew of reasons happens to be completely inexperienced in matters of love/sex. I only just started dating a month ago and while it's going well, I feel overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy. Like even if something does pan out what could I possibly have to contribute to the relationship? Am I just chasing a pipe dream? Is it too late for me to start looking for love/ sex? Or do I just need to calm the fuck down?

There are approximately 290,000 active commercial airline pilots in the world. Every day, they wake up to whiney kids, sick dogs, aging parents, annoying coworkers, and shitty commutes. Of course they also wake up to great runs, pretty sunrises, home-cooked meals, exotic locations, and trips home. Because they’re people. Normal people, in the grind of life, going to work and going home. And at work, they get to their gate, tick all the boxes, say their polite hellos to their passengers, and move a giant metal fuselage full of strangers 30,000 feet into the air going 500 mph across unexplored oceans of unsurvivable depth.

If someone made you pilot a commercial flight tomorrow, you would have reason to feel overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy because you would literally be inadequate. You would have nothing to contribute to flying because you would have no idea how to fly a plane.

But you do have something to contribute to a relationship, because you do, in fact, know how to be in them. You, despite your not knowing it, have plenty of training. Right now, you’re in a small but very real relationship with me. You’ve come to me with curiosity, vulnerability, and even a dash of humor. I see that vulnerability and am coming back to you with what I hope is kindness and realism. But I don’t know for sure. I can’t know how you’ll receive this message, how you’ll relate to what I’m saying, or what you’ll think of me after. And that, really, is being in a relationship. Putting yourself out there, trying to be your best self, trying to help people, trying to know someone, and knowing that, sometimes despite all of this, sometimes the relationship you’re trying to forge will fail. That is true when we’re 6 on the playground on the monkey bars, it’s true when we’re 16 negotiating curfews and grades, it’s true when we’re 29 interviewing and flirting, it’s true when we’re 43 reassessing our marriages, it’s true forever.

I get that everyone else feels like an airline pilot, navigating skies out of your reach with flexibility and wisdom. But you don’t have to fly a plane to date. You answer a message. You make a joke. You send a text. You get ignored. You turn someone down. You ask someone out. And at whatever speed you’re comfortable with, you remove whatever literal and figurative layers you’re comfortable with.

You are allowed to feel overwhelmed. Everyone feels overwhelmed when approaching something they literally have no idea how to do. That’s OK. But that’s why we learn. That’s why we take our time but also take chances. That’s why flight school exists. That’s why dating blogs and books and movies and websites and everything else exists. So you can learn to date. Because the truth is, even people who’ve been holding hands on the playground since they were 9 can feel overwhelmed by the world of love. We’ve only written an infinite amount of story around the subject. You could say almost every single human is undone, overcome, and indeed overwhelmed by love and all its facets. And that’s OK. But inadequate? A pipe dream? Too late?

No. Too late is when you’re dead. Show yourself a little forgiveness. Because what you’ve shown me isn’t inadequacy, it’s hope. And really, that’s all you need.

Pete Lau:

Appearance-wise, we’ve always maintained our signature horizon line and precise curve to the back of the device. From the OnePlus One to the OnePlus 5T, the horizon line and characteristic curve are important elements of our design language.

In addition to retaining the horizon design, we’ve also tried to incorporate glass materials on OnePlus 6. Although OnePlus is not the first manufacturer to use glass, we are confident that we are providing users with our interpretation of a familiar material.

OnePlus 6’s glass design is centered around creating a ”sense of value” and ”premium hand-feel.” As I mentioned at the beginning, people relate deeply to the products they use. We gave a lot of thought to how users should feel when they use the OnePlus 6. The advantages of glass over metal are manifold: glass communicates a transparent, bright, and pure feeling. The way glass transforms under different lighting is a particularly important challenge—the OnePlus design team tested over 70 glass prototypes before selecting the best one.

At the same time, we always want to create devices that feel premium to the touch. We care about the user’s experience from the moment they touch the device. We also want our devices to feel burdenless in the hand, even after an extended period of use. OnePlus users have exacting standards for great industrial design. These standards often push and challenge us to meet our users’ expectations, to commit an extra layer of detail and polish in everything we do.

As an example, the OnePlus 6’s glass back contains five printed layers of Nanotech Coating, a first in the smartphone industry. We applied 5 layers of Nanotech Coating instead of 3, even though the degree of separation between each layer is extremely subtle and tough to discern. However, the additional layers give the back of the device a stronger impression of depth that our most demanding users will surely appreciate. Closely examine the OnePlus 6 and you’ll indeed see this subtle nuance embedded in each device.
