Electronic Arts brings The Sims FreePlay to Windows Phone 8

by MobileNations

Sims FreePlay

When Electronic Arts announced Tetris Blitz would be coming to Windows Phone in late September, we fully expected that to be the publisher’s only Windows Phone release this month. As it turns out, EA did have another release in store for us, though it popped up a little late in the day: The Sims FreePlay!

The Sims FreePlay is the third Sims game for Windows Phone, following The Sims 3 and The Sims Medieval. But those games are essentially simple RPGs dressed in Sims clothing. The Sims FreePlay is much closer to the true Sims games for PC and Xbox 360. As the name suggests, it’s also free to play. You’ll need a Windows Phone 8 device with 1 GB of RAM to install it. More details after the break!

Command and Conquer's factions and new unit types detailed

by Megan Farokhmanesh

EA's upcoming real-time strategy game, Command and Conquer, will include expanded factions from previous titles and new unit types,

development director Tim Morten said during a recent interview.

Command and Conquer takes place 10 years after the previous installment. According to Morten, the Global Liberation Army and the European Union will take over from the US faction in the previous games. The Asia Pacific Alliance has also been expanded as a broader version of the China faction.

Fans of the series can also expect to see a few familiar units.

"[The game is] about a third of the same units, a third modified versions and a third brand new," Morten said. "If you were a fan for example of the Overlord Tank, we still have Overlord...

Asus announces the T100: Windows 8.1 device with 11 hours of battery life just for $349

by MobileNations

Asus Transformer Book T100

In late 2007 Asus kicked off a new segment of personal computers called netbooks with their Eee PC line. The devices initially ran Linux, but later brought Windows into the mix. They were, for a time, wildly successful. They fit the computing needs of 90% of the population. You could easily browse the web, check email, compose Word documents, and more for a relatively inexpensive product with solid battery life. Other PC manufacturers jump into the craze, but that all about ended when the iPad and other tablets came into prominence. Now Asus is hoping to regain that netbook market with the T100, but don’t call this a netbook.

iPhone 5s fingerprint reader has a timed safeguard, dislikes sweaty digits

by Engadget

iPhone 5S' fingerprint sensor has a 48hour unlock window, dislikes sweaty digits

Beyond the basics, Apple has said little of how the iPhone 5s Touch ID fingerprint reader works — we mostly know that it’s inaccessible to the outside world. Thankfully, the company has shed further light on Touch ID through statements to the Wall Street Journal. To start, iPhone owners will have to unlock with a passcode if they either reboot or haven’t unlocked within 48 hours. The safeguard prevents hackers from simply biding their time while they look for a workaround, Apple says. Legitimate users will also want to keep their hands dry, as the reader doesn’t work well with fingers covered in sweat and other liquids. You won’t want to try unlocking immediately after running, then, but it’s evident that Apple already knows many of Touch ID’s real-world limitations.

New ultra-thin glass is just two atoms thick, earns Guinness World Record

by Chris Welch

A new record for the world's thinnest sheet of glass has been set, and it comes in at just two atoms thick. The ultra-thin glass, now recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, was an accidental discovery by scientists at Cornell University and Germany’s University of Ulm. As they were working to produce pure graphene, the researchers noticed a formation of "muck," but closer analysis revealed a glass layer composed of silicon and oxygen. In other words, this major discovery was something of a stroke of luck. Scientists suspect that an air leak prompted a reaction between copper foils being used for the graphene work and a quartz furnace.

And despite the glass pane's barely-there size, it's providing scientists with a wealth of...

Apple: We're Not Storing An Image Of Your Fingerprint On The New iPhone

by Steve Kovach

iphone 5s home button taken apart

Apple's new iPhone 5S will not store an image of your fingerprint, Apple has confirmed to The Wall Street Journal.

The new smartphone has a fingerprint sensor built into the home button. It lets you unlock your phone without typing in a passcode. It also lets you download apps and content from iTunes without typing in your password every time.

Instead of storing a photo of your fingerprint, the iPhone 5S just stores the "data" about what your fingerprint looks like on its processor, Apple says.

That means even if someone was able to hack into your phone, that person wouldn't be able to tell what your fingerprint looks like. Everything is encrypted.

Apple also says third-party apps won't be able to access the fingerprint sensor.

Zuckerberg: The Government 'Blew It' When It Comes To NSA Spying (FB)

by Steve Kovach

mark zuckerberg at techcrunch disrupt

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview at TechCrunch's Disrupt conference yesterday that the U.S. government "blew it" when it comes to spying by the NSA.

Zuckerberg said the government doesn't do a good enough job at balancing citizens' personal privacy and liberties against potential security threats.

His statements carry a lot of weight. Facebook was one of the tech companies named in the documents about the NSA spying program PRISM that was leaked a few months ago. Facebook later denied that it gives the government "direct access" to user data.

More recently, Facebook, Yahoo, and others have asked the government to allow it to be more open about the kind of requests for user data it gets from the government. It's a relatively common practice for tech companies to get requests from the government for user data, but they legally can't discuss much about it.

According to Politico, Zuckerberg will meet with four top Republicans in the House of Representatives next week to discuss NSA spying.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who also spoke at TechCrunch Disrupt yesterday, said it would be "treason" if Yahoo shared more details about what kind of data requests it gets from the government.

This 6-step guide to getting rich is buried in a 78-year-old book

by Mandi Woodruff

Napoleon hill

Thousands of personal finance books on shelves today promise to teach you to spend less, save more, invest better, retire earlier, get out of debt faster, and solve just about every financial conundrum in between.

But perhaps none said it better than a book published in 1937.

Napoleon Hill, a Great Depression-era author and former advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, interviewed "more than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known" to figure out the key to their good fortune. He wrapped all of his insights in a 200-page package and published "Think and Grow Rich," which went on to become one of the best-selling books of all time.

Don't expect to find any stock-picking or gambling advice in it. Despite Hill interviewing some of the most iconic businessmen of his day, none of his findings involved any particularly hard-to-attain skills. His entire premise is helping people overcome the psychological barriers that keep them from wealth.

"Wishing will not bring riches," Hill writes. "But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches."

In one passage, he sums up six steps to turning a desire for wealth into "its financial equivalent":

First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money." Be definite as to the amount. (There is a psychological reason for definite- ness which will be described in a subsequent chapter).

Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.")

Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.

Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.

Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.

Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. AS YOU READ, SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY.

It seems basic, but if you actually compare this to just about any personal finance guide out there, you'll find exactly the same simple steps. They just come with a lot more bells and whistles.

If anything, Hill's book is a reminder that one of the only ways to achieve true wealth is to understand that more often than not our emotions and our mindset are what keep us from succeeding, and that it's our job to come up with a plan to overcome them.

"When riches take the place of poverty, the change is usually brought about through well conceived and carefully executed plans," he wrote. "Poverty needs no plan. It needs no one to aid it, because it is bold and ruthless. Riches are shy and timid. They have to be 'attracted.'"

Despite The Dominance Of Apps, Top Properties Are Still Dependent On Mobile Websites

by Tony Danova

We know that social media usage is migrating to mobile, but how much of that usage is channeled through apps, and how much is through browsers?

Facebook reaches about 76% of the U.S. smartphone population through its popular app, according to recent data from comScore

But an additional 10% of smartphone owners access Facebook only through the mobile Web (using a mobile browser such as Safari or Chrome).

In other words, Facebook sees a 13% gain in audience thanks to its mobile website.

Twitter is even more dependent on the mobile Web. Twenty-one percent of the U.S. audience accesses Twitter's app, but an additional 8% access it over the mobile Web. That's a 38% audience "lift," taking the app-only audience as the base, for Twitter.

Pandora is 100% dependent on its app usage.

SmartphoneAppReachUS

Looking at the top smartphone properties, one interesting case is Amazon, which reaches an impressive 66.8% of U.S. smartphone users. However, it fails to crack comScore's top 15 apps list, meaning its app fails to reach the thresh hold of reaching 20% of smartphone users. Amazon is clearly still dependent on the mobile Web browsers for a big chunk of its audience.

It may be true U.S. mobile users are quickly moving away from the mobile Web in favor of apps, but developers and app publishers need to keep an eye on their mobile sites too.

'Harry Potter' spin-off movie series announced, written by J.K. Rowling

by Jacob Kastrenakes

The wizarding world of Harry Potter is coming back to the big screen through a new spin-off movie written by J.K. Rowling herself. The movie will be set 70 years before the events of Harry Potter, and will follow the adventures of Newt Scamander. For big fans, Scamander's name may be familiar — in the original series, he was the author of a textbook called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which Harry was required to buy. Warner Bros. announced the new film this morning, saying that it would be the first in a whole new series, and that some familiar characters and creatures could turn up once again.

"I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about," Rowling says in a...

How My Polaroids Of The Sept. 11 Attacks Led Me Into America's Secret Court System For Terrorist Suspects

by Jim Edwards

september 11This week marks the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

On the day of the attacks, I lived directly across the Hudson River from the twin towers, in downtown Jersey City, N.J. As the buildings burned and then collapsed, police shut down the entire Jersey City waterfront except for one small area, Morris Canal Park. The park had an unobstructed view, and I took a set of Polaroid shots of the disaster.

Later, as a senior writer for the New Jersey Law Journal, I investigated the cases of the 762 Muslim men who were randomly rounded up by the FBI after the attack, cleared of being terrorists, but secretly deported anyway to the countries of their birth. Some of them were tortured by local authorities when they arrived.

This is the story of how, after taking these Polaroids, I discovered that the U.S. set up an invisible court system outside the control of the federal judiciary to deal with Muslim immigrants post-Sept. 11.

This is a postcard of downtown Manhattan that I bought on the day of the attacks. People forget that the twin towers were more than twice as tall as the other buildings downtown.

On the day of the attack I was a freelance business journalist. The collapse of the towers brought work to a halt, so I went outside with my old-fashioned Polaroid camera to take some pictures. They're not great quality, but the Polaroid was the only camera I owned in the era before cellphones.

Thinking that there would be thousands of wounded people, I approached this police officer to ask if I could donate blood. He said there was no need: People in the buildings either died or survived. Relatively few were wounded. You can see the smoke in the background at the end of the street.

110,000 DEAD IN SYRIA: Here's A Look At Who Has Been Killed

by Michael Kelley

AP13012314092

The Syrian war has been going on for 2½ years.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) — which relies on a network of activists, doctors and lawyers throughout Syria — says that 110,371 people have been killed so far, and there is no end in sight.

Here's a breakdown of some of SOHR's numbers:

  • At least 40,146 civilians have been killed (including nearly 4,000 women and more than 5,800 children).
  • 21,850 rebel fighters have been killed.
  • 27,654 army soldiers have been killed.
  • 17,824 pro-regime militia and 171 members of the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah have been killed battling on the Syrian army's side.
  • 2,726 unidentified people have died.
  • As of July, about 5,000 people are killed each month.

ZaatariHere are some more numbers that give an idea of how devastating the conflict has been:

  • Syria's population is 22.4 million.
  • There are currently 2,027,124 Syrian refugees.
    •  More than 120,000 people currently resides at the Zaatari camp in Jordan, which makes it the fourth most populous place in the country.
    • There are 519,676 total refugees in Jordan while there are 463,885 in Turkey and 731,675 in Lebanon.
  • If current trends persist, more than 3 million Syrians would have left their country by the end of 2013.
  • Another 5 million Syrians have been displaced inside the country, which means that nearly one-third of the country has been displaced by the war.
  • At least 42,332 people have been detained in the conflict.
  • Millions more have been traumatized.

All-in-all, these numbers will continue to rise as the military stalemate across the country persists.

Currently all eyes are on the situation surrounding Syria's chemical weapons stockpile, which is considered the third largest in the world (behind the U.S. and Russia).

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says that the Assad regime has 1,000 tons of various chemical agents.

It's Official! There Will Be A 'Breaking Bad' Spinoff Show 'Better Call Saul'

by Kirsten Acuna

Bob Odenkirk Saul Goodman Breaking Bad

The "Breaking Bad" spinoff show has been confirmed.

AMC has announced that "Better Call Saul," a series based on the Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) character is indeed a go.

According to the release, the show will follow Goodman before becoming Walter White's lawyer.

Back in April, Deadline reported the spinoff series was being considered.

Last summer, "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan said he and Odenkirk had discussed a potential spinoff

Speaking to Indiewire, Gilligan teased what he'd love to see in the show.

“I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law,” said Gilligan.

Here's the press release via TheWrap

AMC and Sony Pictures Television confirmed today that they have reached a licensing agreement for a spinoff of Vince Gilligan’s landmark AMC/SPT series Breaking Bad. As conceived, the new series is based on the show’s popular Saul Goodman character with the working title Better Call Saul. Plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer.

'Breaking Bad' prequel series 'Better Call Saul' is coming to AMC

If you've been mourning the coming end of AMC's Breaking Bad, today's a good day: the network is moving forward with a spin-off series based around the adventures of Walter White's attorney, Saul Goodman. Deadline reports that the show is tentatively titled Better Call Saul, and will actually take place before the events of Breaking Bad.

Played by Bob Odenkirk, the character of Saul Goodman is a favorite of both fans and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, and the idea for a spin-off has been floated for some time. AMC has now closed the licensing deal it needed with Breaking Bad producer Sony Pictures TV, and the show is expected to get a series order once deals are closed with Odenkirk, Gilligan, and Peter Gould, the writer-producer...

18 Gorgeous 'Grand Theft Auto V' Landscapes To Get You Pumped For The Game

by Kirsten Acuna

gta v

"Grand Theft Auto V" comes to stores next Tuesday.

After seeing many game trailers, we can't wait to get our hands on Rockstar's next incarnation of the franchise.

While we're excited to play as three protagonists, explore the expansive universe, and try out multiplayer online, we want nothing more than to get in a vehicle and take in the view.

Forget the violence, forget the car chases, and guns. The visuals look like something out of a postcard.

It's been five years since "Grand Theft Auto IV" won us over with a fictionalized New York City. While it's little surprise the graphics look stellar — Rockstar reportedly spent a jaw-dropping $266 million to market and produce the game — GTA V has really nailed it with the landscapes.

This time, players will head to Los Santos, a modern-day version of Los Angeles.

Before the game's release, let's bask in the game's visuals.

The fifth installment takes place in a fictionalized, modern-day Los Angeles.

The game world will be larger than previous Rockstar games "Red Dead Redemption," "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," and "Grand Theft Auto IV" combined.

Rockstar founder Sam Houser announced it will be the most ambitious "Grand Theft Auto" to date with a reinvention of the universe.

Gogo in-flight Internet to combine satellite and air-to-ground, hit 60Mbps

by Jon Brodkin

Gogo is planning to use both satellite and air-to-ground connectivity in its next generation of in-flight Internet service, bringing the total bandwidth available on each plane from 9.8Mbps to 60Mbps.

"The new service—called Gogo GTO, or Ground to Orbit—is a proprietary hybrid technology that combines the best aspects of existing satellite technologies with Gogo's Air to Ground (ATG) cellular network," the company said in a press release available at Engadget. "The technology will use satellite for receive only (transmission to the plane) and Gogo's Air to Ground network for the return link (transmission to the ground)."

Gogo's current service uses just an air-to-ground cellular network. Engadget writer Darren Murph noted that "While Gogo's air-to-ground network is great for latency, it struggles with bandwidth."

Valve: “Family Sharing” for up to 10 devices coming to Steam

by Kyle Orland

Valve today announced that it will launch a Family Sharing feature to allow Steam users to share their game libraries with other accounts on up to 10 additional devices.

Steam Family Sharing, which will launch in a private beta in mid-September, lets users share their entire library with up to 10 devices rather than sharing individual games. Only one person can play any game from the shared library at any given time, meaning you can't use your own Steam account while someone else is actively sharing in it. This limitation makes Family Sharing somewhat similar to simply giving someone else access to your Steam library by sharing your username and password. However, this way there's no risk to your account details or e-commerce information in the process.

Steam users can share access either by enabling it in their account settings or by responding to requests to share sent by other Steam users. Borrowers will still be limited by regional restrictions on the original game, and lenders can have sharing privileges taken away if a borrower is caught engaging in cheating or fraud. All DLC purchased by the lender will be available to the borrower, but Valve warns that some games "that require an additional third-party key, account, or subscription" may not be shareable.
