Microsoft uses Kinect to let you navigate Windows using air gestures

by Tom Warren

Microsoft is revealing its latest research project today, a way to use Kinect for gesture-based navigation with Windows. While the company has long supported Kinect for Windows, it hasn't really provided a way for Windows users to navigate using Kinect. A new research project aims to solve that by mounting a Kinect camera above a desk that detects a number of gestures above and around a keyboard and mouse.

While it looks similar to the Leap Motion approach, it's not designed to replace the keyboard and mouse says Microsoft principle researcher Abigail Sellen. "What we don't want here is Tom Cruise in minority report," Sellen explains. "What gestures are good at are being very casual, expressive. What they're not good at is being...

Nokia will announce six new devices at its October 22nd event

by Vlad Savov

Nokia's Innovation Reinvented event in Abu Dhabi next month will host the launch of at least six new devices from the Finnish company, including at least two new Lumias. This information comes from sources familiar with Nokia's roadmap, who also tell The Verge that there'll be a range of new accessories, with one of them being "pretty special."

Up to this point, the major expectation for the October 22nd Nokia World event has been the debut of the 6-inch Lumia 1520. That now appears to be a near certainty, since we're told Nokia is planning a "large range" of form factors and devices, which opens the door to something even larger like the rumored Lumia 2520 Windows RT tablet.

There's been fervent anticipation for a Nokia Windows tablet...

The iPhone 5S Costs $199 To Build, And 5C costs $173, According To Teardown (All Things Digital)
A new report from research firm IHS, and shared with All Things Digital, found that the new iPhone 5S costs about $199 to build after the analysts tore down the 5S and priced it according to its individual parts. The lower-cost iPhone 5C model was pegged at $173 to build. Analysts even went so far as to say they are almost the same phone except for the fingerprint scanner and processor on the 5S. Fewer technical variations between the devices will lead to greater overall profitability on Apple's device manufacturing. Also, many speculated the 5C replaced the existing iPhone 5 to increase Apple's margins on sales of the similarly-tiered devices. Last year, IHS pegged the iPhone 5's cost to build at $205. Read >

China Leads In Sales Of iPhone 5S, Not 5C (Localytics)
Localytics compiled a country-by-country breakdown that compares sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C about 72 hours after launch. China, where many felt 5C would succeed, is actually leading the pack in high-end 5S sales. The United States and the U.K., on the other hand, had the two lowest proportions for sales of the iPhone 5S. Read >

How law, history and an unfortunate association with Nazis influenced Swedish game development

by Emily Gera

Following a positive reaction to Ubisoft's next-gen title The Division at E3 earlier in the year, Massive Entertainment managing director David Polfeldt took it upon himself to look into why such a high number of developers based in Sweden find success in an international market.

Speaking on the subject of Swedish development culture at today's DICE Europe event in London, Polfeldt points to historical, traditional and legal aspects specific to the country as influencing the current state of games development in Sweden.

Polfeldt describes its result as a combination of functional pragmatism and storytelling. The country's long history of storytelling from its Viking days and sagas from Iceland are embedded in its culture, as is a long...

13 Everyday Phrases That Actually Came From Shakespeare

by Christina Sterbenz

shakespeare

Just the mention of William Shakespeare makes some people cringe. Even I'll admit his writing seems daunting at times.

Whether a fan or not though, you probably use many of Shakespeare's phrases on a regular basis.

Here's a list of 13 popular, albeit strange, sayings The Bard coined. In fact, we say or write some of these so often, they've become clichés.

1. "Green-eyed monster"

Meaning: jealousy.

In "Othello," Iago uses describes jealousy as a monster which devours its source.

"Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy!
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on" (Act 3, Scene 3).

In this case, Iago uses romance as an example. He thinks a man would rather know his wife is cheating than suspect her without proof.

2. "In a pickle"

Meaning: a difficult or uncomfortable situation.

In "The Tempest," King Alonso asks his jester, Trinculo, "How camest thou in this pickle?" (In modern language, "how did you get so drunk?")

The drunk Trinculo responds, "I have been in such a pickle since I saw you last ..." (Act 5, Scene 1).

Trinculo's drinking does cause trouble for him, the way we use the phrase today. Shakespeare's original intent makes sense though. Many pickling processes use alcohol.

3. "The world is your oyster"

Meaning: being in a position to take advantage of life's opportunities.

In "The Merry Wives Of Windsor," Falstaff refuses to lend Pistol any money. Pistol retorts, "Why, then the world's mine oyster, which I with sword will open" (Act 2, Scene 2).

Since Falstaff won't help him financially, Pistol vows to obtain his fortune using violent means.

We've dropped the angry undertones for modern use.

4. "Catch a cold"

Meaning: to get sick.

In "Cymbeline," one of Shakespeare's lesser-known plays, Iachimo says to Posthumus Leonatus, "We will have these things set down by lawful counsel, and straight away for Britain, lest the bargain should catch cold and starve ..." (Act 1, Scene 4).

In other words, if the deal takes too long, it will fall apart. Shakespeare created the idea of "cold" causing illness for the first time.

5. "It's all Greek to me"

Meaning: that something is indistinguishable or incomprehensible.

In "Julius Caesar," when Cassius asks Casca what Cicero said, Casca responds, "But, for mine own part, it was Greek to me" (Act 1, Scene 2).

Cassius didn't understand because he doesn't speak Greek. The phrase has obviously morphed and expanded its meaning.

6. "Love is blind"

Meaning: an inability to see shortcomings in a lover; doing crazy things when in love.

In the "The Merchant Of Venice," Jessica disguises herself as a boy just to see her beloved, Lorenzo. Needless to say, she feels a little silly but simply has to see him.

"But love is blind, and lovers cannot see
The pretty follies that themselves commit ..." (Act 2, Scene 6)

7. "Wild goose chase"

Meaning: a hopeless and never-ending pursuit.

In "Romeo and Juliet," Romeo makes a play on words comparing his shoe to his penis, and Mercutio can't compete with Romeo's wit. He tells Romeo to stop joking, but Romeo implores his friend to continue — an impossible feat in Mercutio's mind.

Mercutio says, "Nay, if our wits run the wild-goose chase, I am done, for thou hast more of the wild-goose in one of thy wits than, I am sure, I have in my whole five" (Act 2, Scene 4).

8. "A Heart Of Gold"

Meaning: a very kind or honorable person.

In "Henry V," King Henry disguises himself as a commoner, and Pistol, unaware of the King's true identity, speaks to him. When the King asks if he considers himself a better man than the king, Pistol says, "The king's a bawcock, and a heart of gold, a lad of life, an imp of fame ..." (Act 4, Scene 1).

9. "Break the ice"

Meaning: to start conversation.

"And if you break the ice, and do this feat,
Achieve the elder, set the younger free ..." (Act 1, Scene 2).

In the "The Taming Of The Shrew," Baptista Minola has two daughters: a sassy one and a modest, beautiful one — the younger daughter. He refuses to let any suitors even speak to his younger daughter until his older daughter marries. Tranio (as Lucentio) suggests that another man marry the older daughter, so he can try to win the younger one's affection.

10. "Laughing stock"

Meaning: a person subjected to ridicule.

In "The Merry Wives Of Windsor," Doctor Caius says to Sir Hugh Evans:

"Pray you let us not be laughing-stocks to other men's humours;
I desire you in friendship, and I will one way or other make you amends" (Act 3, Scene 1).

Here, Doctor Caius thinks the two will make fools of themselves if they fight — exactly what people want and expect. They should end the conflict and save their reputations instead.

11. "Wear your heart on your sleeve"

Meaning: to express your emotions openly, especially when others notice without much effort.

In "Othello," Iago says he'll "wear my heart upon my sleeve. For daws to peck at: I am not what I am" (Act 1, Scene 1).

The phrase most likely stemmed from jousting matches in the Middle Ages. Knights would wear tokens (such as scarfs) from their ladies tucked into the sleeves of their armor. But the first recorded use appears in Shakespeare's play.

12. "Dogs of war"

Meaning: soldiers; the brutalities that accompany war.

In "Julius Caesar," Mark Antony says to Brutus and Cassius, "Cry “Havoc!” and let slip the dogs of war ..." (Act 3, Scene 1) shortly after Caesar's assassination.

Here, Mark Antony predicts that Caesar's ghost will come back, with help from the goddess of vengeance, to start a massive war in Italy.

He continues, "This foul deed will stink up to the sky with men’s corpses, which will beg to be buried" (Act 3, Scene 1).

Thus, the phrase today carries a serious connotation.

13. "Method to his madness"

Meaning: Someone's strange behavior has a purpose.

In "Hamlet" Polonius says as an aside, "Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t" (Act 2, Scene 2).

In the previous scene, Hamlet just read a letter and criticized its author for being rude. But Polonius knows something that Hamlet doesn't and understands the "method" behind the author's "madness."

NSA ANALYST: We Simply Don't Have Time To Read Emails That Aren't Related To Terrorists

by Geoffrey Ingersoll

eye of providence dollar bill"Do I, as an American, have any concerns about whether the NSA is illegally or surreptitiously targeting or tracking the communications of other Americans?"

So begins the open letter NSA Mathematician Roger Barkan published in ZDNet today.

"The answer is emphatically, 'No.'"

Barkan contends that "Big Data" is just a way of the world, an inescapable truth. He asserts that the NSA — Congressionally mandated to spy on foreign targets — would be foolish not to use it to gain advantage over those who intend to harm Americans.

"We have more than enough to keep track of," continues Barkan, "people who are actively planning to do harm to American citizens and interests -- than to even consider spending time reading recipes that your mother emails you."

Then in terms of NSA internal monitoring of workers' activities, Barkan drops this line: "We're not watching you. We're the ones being watched."

Of course it'll be easy for NSA-critics to dismiss this letter as shilling for the government.

Freelance reporter and former intelligence analyst Joshua Foust, however, says that line of logic enforces a deeply hypocritical double standard on the NSA debate.

In terms of the relationship between NSA fugitive Edward Snowden and reporter and advocate Glenn Greenwald, Foust told Business Insider, "When someone tells [Greenwald] something he disagrees with, he assumes that person is lying, looks for evidence that he is, or just attacks their character," says Foust, "But when Snowden tells him something, he doesn't assume he's lying and look for evidence to the contrary."

Foust says the same reason someone has credibility — their experience working in government — is often used as an excuse to dismiss what they say as 'speaking for the government.' Especially when the particular statement may come off as a sober assessment of current situations.

"If it is determined that the rules should be changed or updated, we at NSA would faithfully and effectively adapt," Barkan writes. "My NSA colleagues and I stand ready to continue to defend this nation using only the tools that we are authorized to use and in the specific ways that we are authorized to use them."

"We wouldn't want it any other way."

Lucasfilm says video game engines will 'take the post out of post-production' for filmmakers

by Chris Welch

Lucasfilm knows a thing or two about making movies, and executives at the company are convinced that video game engines will play a huge role in film production within the next decade. Chief technology strategy officer Kim Libreri laid out the company's vision at BAFTA in London this week. Libreri says that computer graphics will eventually evolve to a point that allows video game assets to be inserted in scenes in realtime — drastically lessening the burden of post-production for filmmakers. "Everyone has seen what we can do in movies, and I think most people will agree the video game industry is catching up quite quickly, especially in the next generation of console title," Libreri said.

"You'll leave a movie set and the shot is...

Microsoft Is Now The Only Company That Makes A Windows RT Tablet (MSFT)

by Julie Bort

dell xps 10 tablet

Dell has currently stopped selling its XPS 10 Windows RT tablet and it's not clear yet if Dell has permanently dropped the device or if it will announce a new model next month.

That leaves Microsoft as the only company making a RT device.

What the heck does that mean for Microsoft and Windows 8?

Windows RT is a different version of Windows 8. It only works on cheaper tablets and was designed to compete with the iPad and Android tablets like the Nexus 7.

But people haven't been buying many Windows RT devices, so manufacturers have stopped making them. Dell is the last manufacturer to pull out.

It's most likely that Dell sold out of its tablet after putting it on a fire sale in May, slashing prices by $150 to $300.

A new model seems unlikely though, as, by nearly any measure RT tablets have been a flop. Microsoft itself took a $900 million write-off on its own Surface RT, and slashed prices to $350 from $499 to get people to buy them.

Microsoft is releasing a new version of RT on October 22 and the company's hardware boss Julie Larson-Green continuously insists that Microsoft isn't giving up on RT.

There's one possibility that could get Dell to try again with RT. As part of the deal to take Dell private, Microsoft loaned Dell $2 billion to help finance the deal. That puts Dell in bed with Microsoft in a very close way.

Meanwhile, Dell is holding a launch event in New York on Oct. 2 to announce its new lineup of tablets. This should include details on a new 8-inch Windows 8 Venue tablet running the new Intel Atom processor code-named Bay Trail.

We've reached out to Dell for comment and haven't heard back. Dell has offered no comment to other publications on its plans for a new RT tablet, merely saying we'll find out Dell's lineup in October.

These Scientists Could Win A Nobel Prize This Year

by Jennifer Welsh

Nobel Prize Meda

Thomson Reuters, which has been predicting the Nobel Winners for more than 10 years, released its annual list of potential winners Wednesday.

The media outlet has successfully predicted 27 wins using data from the Web Of Science website, including how many times a given set of scientific literature has been cited — the more times a paper is cited, the more important and influential the work.

That doesn't mean these are the only contestants — there are other dark horse candidates that may not have made this list.

The Nobel prizes will be announced Oct. 7-14.

CHEMISTRY: A. Paul Alivisatos, Chad A. Mirkin, and Nadrian "Ned" C. Seeman for their contributions to the field of DNA Nanotechnology. Together, they've worked to design tiny objects made with DNA with applications in fields like nano-medicine.

A Paul Alivisatos is the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the
University of California, Berkeley.
Chad A. Mirkin is a professor at Northwestern University.
Nadrian C. Seeman is at New York University.

DNA is the molecule that makes up your genome. But it can also be manipulated to create tiny physical structures. That's where nanotechnology comes in. Tiny robots made of DNA can be used to move and control other tiny objects.

Supposedly Seeman was inspired to develop the field in the fall of 1980, while at a pub, inspired by the M. C. Escher woodcut "Depth." He envisioned using DNA to make a lattice-like structure that could support other larger molecules so that scientists could work with them. He didn't achieve that goal until 2009.

dna_nanostructures.png

Why use DNA instead of another molecule? Strands of DNA fit together in a very specific way, since individual "base pairs" — the A, T, G, and C — can only bind to each other.

When they bind, these strands form strong, rigid structures.

Because we understand how these base pairs fit together, we can design DNA structures that will self-assemble based on these rules.

These DNA objects can even be changed after they are created, turning them into molecular robots.

CHEMISTRY: Bruce N. Ames for the invention of a test to determine how likely a compound is to create mutations, called the Ames test.

Bruce N Ames is affiliated with Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute and the University of California, Berkeley.

The Ames test easily and cheaply determines how "mutagenic" a compound is. These compounds could be anything from a new drug or a food additive, to a cleaning product or hair dye. If a compound is mutagenic, it's more likely to cause cancer, because a buildup of mutations is what makes cells form tumors.

The test uses the salmonella bacteria, which is much easier to manipulate and grow in the lab than animals are. The bacteria rely on a compound called histidine to thrive, because they have a mutated gene. In the lab, the bacteria are grown in the compound to be tested without histidine. If the bacteria are able to mutate back into their natural state and thrive without histidine, the compound they were exposed to is likely to be mutagenic, and have pushed the bacteria to make more mutations. Those mutations let it survive without histidine.

His findings using this test even led to some chemicals being withdrawn from commercial products.

Eventually, using his findings that man-made compounds aren't necessarily any worse than "natural" chemicals to argue against pesticide bans, led to a split with environmentalist groups.

CHEMISTRY: M.G. Finn, Valery V. Fokin, and K. Barry Sharpless for the development of a type of reaction that quickly and reliably joins small units together to form desired substances.

M.G. Finn is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Valery V. Fokin and K. Barry Sharpless are researchers at The Scripps Research Institute.

The quick creation of substances by joining together smaller units is called "modular click chemistry." These types of reactions are meant to mimic how proteins and other compounds are put together in cells — at body temperature and normal pH — without making any toxic byproducts.

Often these natural reactions use enzymes, very specific proteins that fit like a lock and key onto the compounds they are changing. In these reactions there is only one favored outcome.

Click chemistry is an overarching idea or approach — one that could be used in countless applications from drug discovery and nanotechnology to applications in the lab when doing other research.

The idea was described by Sharpless in 2001. If selected, this would be Sharpless’ second Nobel Prize — he won the Chemistry prize in 2001. The Scripps institute owns a cadre of patents on the idea.

‘Get rich quick’ scams hit Bitcoin

by Adrianne Jeffries

Back in August, weird ads began appearing for something called the Bitcoin Robot that purported to earn massive profits by making hundreds of small transactions a day in the virtual currency, a version of the lucrative high-frequency trading done on Wall Street. The Bitcoin Robot claimed to have a waiting list of 20,000, even though the promo video through which it debuted has fewer than 500 views. Four days after launch, the Bitcoin Robot advertised that "EVERY Bitcoin Robot User Is In Profit (100% Success Quote) I-N-S-A-N-E!"

The Bitcoin Robot bears all the marks of a scam, down to the obviously fake affiliate reviews posted around the web and the illustrated 1-2-3 steps of "download, install, profit." The original ad even seemed to...

KANYE WEST: 'I Want To Be The Anchor Of The First Trillion-Dollar Company'

by Aly Weisman

Kanye West

Kanye West is at it again, talking the talk of the grand plans he hopes to one day accomplish.

The rapper's latest rant comes out of a lengthy interview with the BBC, in which West says, “I want to be the anchor and the force behind a billion dollar company … and after I’ve made that billion-dollar step … I eventually want to be the anchor of the first trillion-dollar company."

And he hopes to do that by designing basketball uniforms — we think.

I want to make uniforms for my high school basketball team through brand Yeezy. I want to make that one step and then another step, and then eventually do uniforms for the entire city. Then I want those uniforms to be hot and make money, and then I eventually want to be the anchor and the force behind a billion dollar company. And after I've made that billion dollar step then I can go in and say 'I've got an opinion on this' and that could be a $10 billion step. I eventually want to be the anchor of the first trillion dollar company.

Good luck with that!

But West isn't nervous about his ideas, because, well, he says he's "a futurist, mentally.”

“They will play this interview in five years,” he explains. “They will play this interview in 10 years, and say, ‘He called that. He called that. He said that was going to happen, that was going to change… I’m a post-modernist [as a] career."

Startup paradox: with few users, Urban Compass is profitable and expanding fast

by Ben Popper

When Urban Compass debuted to the public in May of this year, it had it fair share of doubters. The company was trying to reinvent the process of searching for an apartment in New York, a notoriously expensive, difficult and fraud-filled endeavor. Four months later the company is profitable, raising another $20 million in venture capital, and plotting its expansion into new cities like San Francisco, Boston, and Chicago.

It has relatively few users but gobs of revenueThe company is unusual for a tech startup: it has relatively few users but gobs of revenue. Every time it helps to rent an apartment the company earns several thousand dollars, and it's currently doing that hundreds of times a month. CEO Ori Allon had sold his previous two...

Read this: How Hiroshi Yamauchi took Nintendo from wooden playing cards to the age of Super Mario

by Sean Hollister

Former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi passed away this morning, at the age of 85. His legacy is incredible. During his fifty-three year reign, he turned his great-grandfather's Japanese playing card company into the cornerstone of the video game industry.

In 1994, journalist and New York Times bestselling author David Sheff wrote the book on how Nintendo got that way. In Game Over: How Nintendo Conquered The World, he details how the first male Yamauchi in three generations ruled Nintendo with an iron fist, how the 21-year-old Yamauchi first fired the old guard and then drove the company towards business after failed business (including love hotels — it was said Yamauchi was his own best customer) to satisfy his ambitions.
