Redirect hides browser extension

by msft-mmpc

While analyzing a malicious Chrome browser extension we recently came across a Virtool that tries to redirect the Chrome Extension page.

We detect it as VirTool:JS/Redichrextor.A.

VirTool:JS/Redichrextor.A won’t let you view, change, remove or uninstall Chrome browser extensions. It does this by stopping you from viewing the Chrome Extension page.

It uses this technique so an affected user won’t be able to remove or uninstall the malicious extension without help from their antimalware software. This makes VirTool:JS/Redichrextor.A a useful piece of code for any malicious Chrome browser extension that wants to avoid manual detection or removal.

When an affected user does try to view the Chrome browser extension page they are redirected. We have seen it open a new tab, or go to the Chrome web store or Google.com:

  • Chrome://newtab

  • Chrome.google.com/webstore

We have also seen similar behaviour used by the following known malicious Chrome browser extensions:

Once VirTool:JS/Redichrextor.A is detected and removed, you should be able to go to the Chrome extension page.

We recommend you then check and uninstall any suspicious browser extension that might be linked to VirTool:JS/Redichrex.A or other malware. We also recommend keeping your security products up-to-date to avoid infection.

While this new trick makes it harder to remove the Virtool manually, it is still easily detected and removed by Microsoft Security software.

Apple demands news site pull copy of iTunes Radio contract, claims copyright infringement

by Greg Sandoval

For years, tech publications large and small have hovered around Apple like fruit flies, constantly digging for scoops about the company's future products. Every once in a while, Apple swats one.

Digital Music News, which covers online music, yesterday yielded to a demand by Apple to remove a copy of a contract that iTunes Radio offered to small independent record labels, the site said in a blog post. Apple claimed that by posting a copy of the contract on its site, DMN violated Apple's copyrights.

Counter-Strike: GO now lets you watch top players compete

by Michael McWhertor

A new update to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive adds the option to let players watch live, in-progress matches being played by pros and highly-ranked players. On the official Counter-Strike blog, Valve calls the option an opportunity to "see how the highest ranked CS:GO players approach the game."

Counter-Strike: GO's new Watch menu also lets its players download and watch their personal match history to review highlights and learn from their mistakes. In GOTV Theater, players can watch a continuous stream of the best-of-the-best live matches.

The update also fixes a handful of in-game bugs and some GOTV quirks.

Valve also notes that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's Operation Bravo promotion — a bundle of eight community-made...

Nokia Lumia 2520 render leaked, shows a cyan tablet incoming

by MobileNations

Nokia Lumia 2520 Cyan

We’re under two weeks away from learning all about what Nokia has in store for Windows Phone and Windows 8. On October 22nd, Nokia will announce a wide range of new devices in Abu Dhabi for both platforms. The two rumored devices that we’re most excited about are the Lumia 1520 and 2520. The first is a “phablet” running Windows Phone 8 with a 1080p display, while the second is a tablet on Windows RT.

We haven’t seen a cyan device from Nokia in quite some time, but it looks like the tablet is going to bring it back.

HTC One Max Fingerprint Scanner Could Be Far More Useful Than We Expected

by AndroidSPIN

htc one max fingerprint scannerThe HTC One Max is almost upon us, expected to be announced on October 15, but that hasn’t stopped it adding a leaked Instagram photo and specifications list to its long trail of leaks. While most of the features of the HTC One Max are rather ho-hum, such as its Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz and 2GB RAM, the feature that has drawn the most ire is the fingerprint scanner that has been spotted adorning the rear of the phablet. Many of us had assumed that it would be used like the iPhone 5S’s fingerprint scanner, used simply for security. While that might still be true, some leaked instructional pictures suggest that the HTC One Max fingerprint scanner could be used to much greater effect.

If the picture and source is to be believed, HTC may be programming the One Max to register shortcuts for each unique fingerprint, i.e. to tie the each of your ten fingerprints to different apps or functions on your phone. Additionally, the source notes that the scanner has the ability to register swipe gestures, possibly opening up even more available functions to utilize, though it’s been suggested this might actually pertain to rudimentary navigation/trackpad functionality.

This is definitely very interesting information, if true, as it would give the One Max its differentiating feature from the other phablets. And while the hardware on the inside may not impress the tech community, the fingerprint scanner might have enough interest, thanks to the iPhone 5S, to boost sales of the HTC One Max. I am still a bit adamant as to how accurate the fingerprint scanner is and if it will actually be able to differentiate your different fingers with 100%, or near 100%, accuracy, but I guess only time will tell.

'Emirates betaalde te weinig belasting in India'

MUMBAI - Luchtvaartmaatschappij Emirates uit Dubai en de Indiase fiscus verschillen van mening over de betaling van achterstallige belasting. Dit meldt The Economic Times in New Delhi zaterdag.

Astronomers shoot first in 'Star Wars'-style timelapse

by Aaron Souppouris

This three-minute timelapse video was shot at the summit of Mauna Kea, the 13,803-foot (4.2km) volcano in Haiwaii. Due to its position, the peak is ideal for space observation. It's currently home to the Manua Kea Observatories, which are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum, and will soon play host to the world's largest optical telescope.

In addition to aiding in the scientific quest for knowledge — and being a dead ringer for Star Wars' Ion Cannons — the observatories also make a fantastic subject for a timelapse. Photographer Sean Goebel spent seven days and nights over several months capturing the observatories against the spectacular constellations of the Milky Way. The video is made all the more...

iPhone 5S users report 'Blue Screen Of Death' reboots

by Tom Warren

Apple's latest iPhone 5S has an unexpected feature: the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD). While it's typically an error found on older Windows PCs, a number of iPhone 5S users are reporting random reboots on their handsets following a BSOD. The blue screen reboots appear to be iPhone 5S specific and are largely occurring with Apple's own iWork apps that come free with all new iOS devices. Videos detailing the issue show that multitasking between apps seems to trigger the BSOD. iPhone 5S users are also reporting random reboots during device use.

Microsoft's Fresh Paint drawing app overhauled for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone

by Tom Warren

Microsoft is updating its Fresh Paint drawing app for Windows 8.1 with some significant changes. The latest update will go live on October 18th alongside the Windows 8.1 release, and it includes a new watercolor mode, graphite pencil set, and a fresh user interface. Microsoft is also improving stylus pressure and rendering of watercolors, and plans to bring a "large refresh" to the Fresh Paint Windows Phone version on October 14th.

Fresh Paint was originally introduced alongside Windows 8 and it lets users draw original pieces, color in built-in templates, or even trace over any image. The app mimics the real effects of paint brushes and the results are impressive. To help with the tracing element, Microsoft is adding a "Inspire Me"...

Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons wins Nobel Peace Prize

by Amar Toor

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision at a press conference held in Oslo Friday morning, saying it chose the OPCW "for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons." The organization will receive a monetary prize of $1.25 million, to be awarded at a ceremony in December.

Based in the Hague, Netherlands, the OPCW was founded in 1997 to uphold the international Chemical Weapons Convention. This year, the organization deployed a team of experts to Syria, following a series of attacks widely believed to have been launched by the army of President Bashar al-Assad. An August 21st attack outside Damascus nearly prompted...

Sony CEO talks breaking into the U.S, doesn’t look so promising

by MobileNations

Android Central

Leaves questions over whether the Xperia Z1 may make it to the U.S.

Sony's CEO, Kaz Hirai, has been speaking to Japanese media, with market share and breaking into the U.S. in particular on the table. With Japan and Europe accounting for around 60% of Sony's smartphone sales, and it seems priority one for Hirai is to maintain and build on that:

"Our biggest priority is maintaining our share in Japan or increasing it … But getting into the U.S. market requires a lot of resources and marketing, so we have to go one step at a time"

So, if you read between the lines, you could argue it may be some time before we see the Xperia Z1 in the States. If at all. That would be a shame, since the Z1 has a lot going for it, and it's a match for any of the high-end Android devices out there right now. But Sony wants to keep making money, so perhaps it makes sense for them to hold off on trying to crack America for now.

Video: Hands on with Nokia’s new Glance Background app

by MobileNations

This morning, Nokia surprisingly released their new Glance Background app in Beta form. It’s shocking because for all the things we knew about upcoming changes to Glance (e.g. color choices, notifications) not one single leak pointed to this ability.

The app simply lets you add a background to your Glance screen and while in theory it’s simple, in reality it’s one of the coolest things we’ve seen.
