Apple recalls last year's MacBook Air due to faulty SSDs

by Nathan Ingraham

Apple has just announced that it is recalling certain models of last year's MacBook Air lineup — if you have an Air with either a 64GB or 128GB SSD drive, your drive could be faulty and in need of replacement. The company has pushed a firmware update out to the Mac App Store which tests your drive — if your computer is affected, Apple recommends you back up your data and bring the machine to an Apple Store or an authorized retailer to have it replaced. Given that the 64GB and 128GB SSDs were the default storage options for the 11- and 13-inch MacBook Air, respectively, there could be a pretty large number of users affected by this recall. The recall only affects computers purchased between June 2012 and June 2013. Those were the...

Wolfram Alpha adds a wealth of Siri-accessible Pokémon info to its database

by Nathan Ingraham

If you're a Pokémon fanatic, there's a new source to go to get all of the info on the Pokémon universe you could ask for: Wolfram Alpha. The massive "knowledge engine" has just added a huge set of Pokémon data, including physical characteristics, stats, and images. "In many ways, Pokémon are an ideal subject for a computable knowledge engine," writes Michael Feltes on the Wolfram Alpha blog. "They have a set of well-defined characteristics with lots of numbers to which we can apply our analytic capabilities."

There's an extra layer of fun to be had now that Pokémon is part of Wolfram Alpha: since Siri searches Wolfram Alpha, iOS users can now ask their devices for whatever Pokémon info they're looking for. As noted by P...

Twitter 'strongly considering' shutting down #Music just six months after launch, says report

by Dante D'Orazio

Twitter #Music may not be much longer for this world. All Things D's Mike Isaac reports that multiple sources say the company is "strongly considering" shutting down the music discovery service, which has seen little public interest. Those sources didn't reveal how long #Music could last, but the report says that the service's fate "is nearly sealed."

The service first went live in April after a number of rumors that sparked a noticeable amount of hype. Activity on the site spiked in the early days, but since then the service has been largely forgotten. The sources tell All Things D that since launch downloads and engagement has been "abysmal." #Music is based around using data the social network has on you — like who you follow —...

Watch Anthony Howe's hypnotic 3D art go from conception to reality

by Nathan Ingraham

"I was bored with everything being static in my visual world," artist Anthony Howe told The Creators Project about his new work — a series of so-called "kinetic sculptures." These kinetic sculptures are hardly static — thanks to the wind, they move in mesmerizing patterns that The Creators Project described as "real-world screensavers." Beyond the visual spectacle, Howe's design process is a combination of modern technology and traditional metalwork processes. His pieces start as computer models that he designs with the CAD program Rhinoceros 3D, and then the designs are cut with a plasma cutter and assembled by hand. That 3D design process is crucial to the wild visual effects found in his finished work — it allows him to see how...

Facebook: onthoofdingsfilm mag

Target canceling PS4 pre-orders bundled with delayed launch games, customers say

by Michael McWhertor

The delay of PlayStation 4 launch games Watch Dogs and DriveClub appears to have had unpleasant repercussions on some customers who pre-ordered Sony's next-gen console. Buyers on Twitter and Reddit who say they used Target.com to pre-order a PS4 bundled with one of those games now say they're being informed that their orders have been canceled altogether.

Unlike Amazon and GameStop's handling of the situation — those retailers say they'll honor the PS4 console orders of those who pre-ordered the system bundled with a delayed game — Target's approach appears to be to cancel the entire order.

According to a Reddit user who posted an email from Target customer service, the company will re-open PS4 console pre-orders next week on...

Apple Sued Over Automatic iOS 7 Downloads to iOS 6-Powered Devices

by MacRumors

ios_7_otaAfter iOS 7 was released, some iOS 6 users discovered that as much as 3GB of storage was being used up by an automated over-the-air download of iOS 7.

For many users, this was handy because they didn’t need to wait for a large download to complete before updating — but for those who wish to remain with iOS 6, they have found multiple gigabytes of storage used up by a software update that they will never use, with no way to free up that space.

One user, Mark Menacher of Poway, California, has filed suit in small-claims court against Apple CEO Tim Cook, alleging in a statement that “Apple’s disregard for customer preferences in relation to iOS 7 is corporate thuggery”.

Steve Jobs was reportedly rough on company employees in pursuit of happy customers, but Tim Cook apparently cultivates a culture of contempt for customer satisfaction in pursuit of corporate profits. It is a policy that will eventually fail.

According to CNET, Menacher asks for a way to delete the iOS 7 installer from his iOS 6 device, plus an additional $50. He has filed a similar complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

NVIDIA Shield gets enhanced capabilities starting October 28

by AndroidGuys

Are you among those who own an NVIDIA Shield? Awesome!  You’re gonna love the next bit of news. Those of you who don’t own one of these gaming and entertainment devices, however, are going to get a touch jealous.

The GameStream feature, which has been considered a beta component thus far, is now official. The timing couldn’t be better as key new PC games (Batman: Arkham Origins, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, etc) are set to fill up the calendar this fall.

Also on the horizon is a new SHIELD Console Mode which allows for owners to turn the Shield into a gaming and entertainment console. Indeed, you can plug it into your television and then sit back with a Bluetooth controller and enjoy games, movies, web, and more.

Along with the release of GameStream comes expanded streaming support, including:

  • Super smooth and fast performance at 60 frames per second.
  • Enhanced Wi-Fi quality of service in combination with GameStream Ready routers from leading network partners ASUS, Buffalo, D-Link, and NETGEAR.
  • Improved onscreen navigation and controls.

NVIDIA GameStream is due to launch on Oct. 28.  Starting on that same day, NVIDIA will offer up to $100 off SHIELD plus free copies of “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag,” “Splinter Cell Blacklist” and “Batman: Arkham Origins” with the purchase of select GeForce GTX graphics cards.

Apple’s Media Event Predicted to See Retina iPad Mini and Thinner iPad, but No Touch ID or Gold Option

by MacRumors

High-profile KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research report outlining some of his expectations for Apple October 22 media event, focusing on the company’s iPad and Retina MacBook Pro lineups.

In line with our previously summarized expectations, Kuo believes that Apple will be introducing a thinner and lighter fifth-generation iPad, as well as a new iPad mini with Retina display. The latter has been the subject of considerable debate, with some sources believing that Apple is not yet ready to bring Retina displays to the iPad mini, but while Kuo believes that Apple will indeed be able to introduce a Retina iPad mini, supplies will be highly constrained at first.

kuo_oct13_event_1
Kuo also weighs in on several other rumored additions for the iPad and iPad mini, claiming that “probably” neither a Touch ID fingerprint sensor nor a gold color option will be available in either line. He believes that production of components related to those features are still being prioritized for the iPhone 5s, which remains in very tight supply, and thus will not yet be able to make their way into the iPad lineup.

As for other upgrades, Kuo believes that the fifth-generation iPad will adopt a new A7X chip while the new iPad mini will be equipped with a slightly less powerful A7 chip like the one found in the iPhone 5s. Kuo also reiterates his earlier claim that the rear camera on Apple’s new iPads will be upgraded to 8 megapixels. Finally, Kuo believes that both the fifth-generation iPad and the second-generation iPad mini will include Apple’s new “M7″ chip that debuted in the iPhone 5s, offering significant improvements for motion tracking.

Alongside the iPad updates, Kuo also believes that Apple will be introducing its Retina MacBook Pro on Tuesday, moving to Intel’s latest Haswell chips for improved performance and battery life while also upgrading the FaceTime camera to 1080p quality, a claim he has made in the past.

kuo_oct13_event_2
Overall, Kuo unsurprisingly believes that the new fifth-generation iPad will drive a significant increase in sales for Apple’s full-size iPad, while the new iPad mini will result in a more modest bump due to the very tight initial supplies. He also predicts a very strong bump for the Retina MacBook Pro, as pent-up demand for new Haswell models should lead to strong sales heading into the holidays.

Unaddressed is Apple’s Mac Pro, which is expected to be given its full introduction on Tuesday in advance of a launch before the end of the year, but Kuo has generally not covered Apple’s Mac Pro line in his report.

Kuo has been fairly accurate with his claims over the past several years, earning him significant attention from the rumor community. He has, however, had some misses, as seen with his prediction that the Retina MacBook Pro would be updated at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference back in June. That update had been widely expected, but did not come to pass and customers are still waiting for the new models to appear over four months later.

by Dante D'Orazio

Microsoft is having trouble updating machines to Windows RT 8.1. The company has taken the update offline, preventing people from upgrading their RT devices. In a statement published on Microsoft's support forms, the company says it is "investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store." Microsoft hasn't specified what the issue is, but a number of reports suggest that a problem that has caused some machines to have their boot data damaged during the update is to blame. Affected machines are unusable until repaired using a recovery drive. There's no word how long the update will be...

Making Money from Movie Streaming Sites, an Insider’s Story

by Andy

dollar-moneyThere are many ways to obtain unauthorized movies and TV shows online. BitTorrent is almost certainly the most popular, but in the past few years the rise of file-storage and streaming services has been difficult to ignore.

Giants such as PrimeWire.ag and Movie4K.to host links to all of the latest movies to view within a browser, but where does that content come from and how does it get there? What motivates people to contribute?

To find out, TorrentFreak has been speaking to an individual with a wealth of experience in this field. To protect his identity we’ll have to be vague about where he operates, but suffice to say he’s one of the most prolific uploaders and linkers online today with a hundreds of thousands of links spread and 30,000 movies and TV shows uploaded. So how did it all start for John?

“When I was a child, the hottest TV show was Happy Days. Well, it came on Tuesday nights at eight and if I wasn’t around ready to watch, I missed it. That’s right; you used to have to be in front of your television at a specific day and time to watch your favorite TV shows. There was no such thing as VCRs or DVRs and even good ol’ Blockbuster was a decade away from opening its first store,” John recalls.

The seeds of need had been planted and many, many years later John found file-sharing sites to be the perfect solution to that original problem. But then streaming sites came along with their ultimate convenience, changing things forever.

“I had just moved to Puerto Vallarta [Mexico] and went to a network’s website to watch a TV Show I had missed and I was blocked because I was outside the US. Grrrrr. Then a friend told me about [Richard O'Dwyer's former site] TVShack and a whole new world opened up to me. The site itself was ugly and clunky but it provided the market with what it needed and me with 100’s of hours of entertainment,” John explains.

While the site was clearly fulfilling unmet demand, not even TVShack had all the answers. This caused John to start contributing to the piracy ecosystem himself.

“One day, there was a movie I wanted to watch and there were no links to it. So I did a Google search and found one and added it to TVShack. Yay me! I was part of the community.”

That event triggered some thoughts. It’s a time-intensive task adding links, so why were some people spending so much time adding huge quantities of links to sites every night? John did some research and then it hit him in the head “like a brick.”

It was all about the money.

affiliate“In order to make money, you have to ‘own’ the links. The links come from file hosts. A file host is someone like YouTube or the now defunct MegaVideo. Of course there are hundreds of others out there and many of them have public, and often times private, affiliate programs,” John says.

The basic mechanism is that users upload hot content to file-hosting sites. The more people who visit that site to view the content the more advertising revenue the file-hoster makes. The file-hoster’s affiliate scheme then kicks in and part of the ad revenue generated gets sent to the uploader of the content. John says the payout to him is around $1 to $2 per 1,000 views of a movie or TV show.

Of course, putting content on a file-hoster is one thing, driving traffic to that content in order to generate the clicks – and the revenue – is another. This is where streaming link sites come in. By uploading hot movies and TV shows to file-hosters and then submitting their links to streaming indexes, more people find the content.

“Just post your links on one of the popular streaming websites like PrimeWire.ag, Movie4k.to or even up-and-comers such as TheShowDepot.com, and collect your money. Sounds easy doesn’t it?”

While John sounds very organized and streamlined now, things weren’t always that way. The main efficiencies have come in the way that movies and TV shows are obtained and made available on hosters and linking sites. Early on John would only be able to upload around ten TV shows per day and hard drive restrictions were becoming an obstacle to making more money.

plzseed“I made a few bucks, but I knew if I could do more and faster and add to more websites, I could make a nice living. Then I discovered seedboxes and a new way to download massive amounts of TV shows and movies. I even found software that automatically uploads the video files to the file hosts.”

With things hotting up with a part-automated system, John was soon adding more than a thousand links a day to several streaming websites. He now has 30,000 different movies and TV shows stored online, across 12 different file-hosting sites, each carrying between 10,000 and 30,000 items from John’s collection.

“Amongst the different streaming websites I have added over 200,000 links. And yes, I am making a nice living at it,” John concludes.

To some readers the idea of making money from unauthorized content will be something that’s unacceptable, yet it’s a difficult reality to escape online. While the vast majority of file-sharers and stream viewers will have no financial interest in the content being viewed, there will always be a small minority who seek to monetize it.

When reward becomes possible, motivations often increase and with that a proliferation of content online. It’s impossible to detect the motivations of the person who uploaded the content currently being viewed so the big question is whether the majority of consumers care. To be blunt – probably not.

How the man who inspired 'Memento' changed our understanding of memory

by Amar Toor

Henry Gustave Molaison was a man who couldn't make memories. Better known to neuroscientists as "HM", the late Molaison suffered from seizures as a young man and struggled to lead a normal life, but things took a dramatic shift after he received a lobotomy in August 1953. Doctors removed large chunks of HM's temporal lobes and most of his hippocampus, on the assumption that these regions were responsible for the patient's neurological problems. The operation did cure HM's seizures, but it left him in a unique case of anterograde amnesia; he could remember his childhood and his personality remained unchanged, but he could not form new memories.

As Steven Shapin writes in a piece for the New Yorker this week, the operation left HM in a...

Oculus Rift could 'eventually' run Android as a standalone system

by Megan Farokhmanesh

Virtual reality headset Oculus Rift could one day run Android through a system of its own, Oculus VR chief technology officer John Carmack recently told Engadget.

The headset currently runs with the assistance of a PC. According to Carmack, a free device with no wire to drag off your shoulder would "make a big difference."

"The way I believe it's going to play out is you will eventually have a head-mounted display that probably runs Android, as a standalone system, that has a system-on-a-chip that's basically like what you have in mobile phones," Carmack said.

You can watch the full interview at Engadget. The HD consumer-friendly version of the Oculus Rift is expected sometime next year. Standard definition developer kits were sent to...
