Terrifying Video From LAX Shooting Shows Chaotic Scene Of People Fleeing Gunman

by Paul Szoldra

New video has emerged from the scene of the chaotic shooting at Los Angeles International Airport this morning that left one TSA officer dead and several other people injured.

In the video, exclusively obtained by TMZ, a chaotic scene unfolds as a police officer armed with a rifle yells for everyone to get down on the floor. Moments later, a panicked stampede of travelers runs right past police officers and out the door.

The unidentified cameraman says "I got some good video," while another voice tells him to "upload that sh-- to CNN."

Inside Terminal 3 where the shooting took place, a "stampede of people" reportedly started running onto the tarmac after the gunfire broke out, according to Fox Sports' Bill Reiter, who was on the scene.

Police said during a press conference that the gunman — identified as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia of Los Angeles — had been wounded in a shootout with police and taken into custody.

The Only Movies You Need To See Before The End Of The Year

by Kirsten Acuna

jennifer lawrence catching fireNow that it's November, movie season is about to get in full swing again.

Get ready for big name sequels, bigger stars (Jennifer Lawrence anyone?) and a queue of Oscar films (calling Martin Scorsese and David O. Russell).

Recently, there's been a massive overhaul in movie release date changes ("Jack Ryan," "Monuments Men," "The Wolf of Wall Street," etc).

Not sure what to see? We have you covered.

"Ender's Game"

Release Date: November 1

Why to see it: Author Orson Scott Card has been adamant that his 1985 children's novel couldn't be adapted into a movie, but after multiple attempts to bring the book to life, fans can finally indulge in the sci-fi adventure.

Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment picked the film up after Warner Bros. lost rights a while ago.

The movie has a lot of Oscar talent from Harrison Ford to Viola Davis and Ben Kingsley. After his performance in "Hugo," Asa Butterfield is one of the next up-and-coming young stars.

Watch the trailer

"12 Years A Slave"

Release Date: wide release is November 1

Why to see it: Get ready to hear a lot more about this film if you haven't already, as it's expected to sweep Oscar nominations. You don't need to look farther than the A-list cast for reasons why it's drawing so much buzz — Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead.

Watch the trailer

"Thor: The Dark World"

Release Date: November 8

Why to see it: We think we're more excited for the return of Tom Hiddleston as Loki than Chris Hemsworth as the mighty God of Thunder Thor. While the film is receiving decent reviews, the major takeaways here will be the two added sequences (one in the middle and another post credits) and a five-minute preview for next year's "Captain America" film that will appear ahead of 3D screenings of the movie.

These Military Night Combat Photos Look Straight Out Of 'Halo'

by Harrison Jacobs

A Marine Special Operations Team member fires a M240B machine gun during night fire sustainment training in Helmand province, Afghanistan, March 28, 2013. Marine Special Operations Team members are deployed in Helmand province to train and mentor Afghan National Security Forces.

The U.S. military is the largest, most powerful force in the world. After two wars over the last ten years, it's clear that the U.S. has had plenty of time and practice to keep our forces battle-tested.

Combat troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan in 2014, effectively marking the end of the war. However, Marines, Army, and Navy continue to train and stay battle ready.

The following night photos, drawn from the U.S. Marines, Army, Air Force, and Navy show just how cutting-edge our military has become.

Foreign Policy had their own post on night time images, but we found a few more exclusively from military photographers.

From the combat gear to the vehicles, during combat at night our military looks like something straight out of futuristic video game.

Here's How The Internet Is Stealing The Time You Would Be Spending On Other Things

by Saranya Kapur

Every minute you spend making cat memes represents 0.05 minutes you could have spent socializing, 0.27 minutes you could have spent on work, 0.04 minutes of relaxing and thinking and 0.12 minutes less of sleep.

That's what a new NBER research paper by Scott Wallsten finds after looking at the opportunity costs of spending your leisure time on the Internet. The Economist's Greg Ip pointed us to this.

Wallsten analyzes data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), which follows 13,000 Americans for 24 hours and breaks down how they spend their time. Wallsten looked at the data point that measures the time spent on “Computer use for leisure (excluding games),” and looks at how it impacts other forms of leisure, such as watching TV, socializing, and attending parties and cultural events.

Here's a chart breaking down what activities get crowded out by Internet use.

Screen Shot 2013 11 01 at 9.37.57 AM

A large part of this this Internet leisure time happens during the work-day, between 9 am to 5 pm, but it peaks during the post-dinner period at around 10 pm.

Screen Shot 2013 11 01 at 9.18.45 AM

Of course, time spent on the Internet differs by demographic.

Breaking down the population by income, Wallsten finds that the richer you get, the less free time you have on the whole. However, your time spent unwinding on the Internet does increase. Internet leisure time is lowest among the lower income groups between $5000 to $15,000 a year, presumably because of lack of access to the internet.

Screen Shot 2013 11 01 at 11.13.50 AM

Screen Shot 2013 11 01 at 11.16.08 AM

Internet leisure time decreases with education, and declines 5.5% for people with Ph.Ds. It's also highest for those without a high school diploma and high school graduates.

Screen Shot 2013 11 01 at 9.53.03 AM

A racial breakdown shows that those identifying as "White-Asian-Hawaiian" spend nearly 50% of their free time on the internet, followed by “White-Asian,” “Black,” and finally “White.”

8 Brooklyn Kids Go To The Hospital After Someone Sprays Axe Body Spray In School

by Saranya Kapur

Love it! Hate Axe! Did spray it in the classroom do..

Axe_Products

School authorities at Brooklyn's Medgar Evers College Preparatory School called emergency services when a odor was detected in a sixth-grade classroom, causing 8 kids to be taken to the hospital.

The smell turned out to be Axe Body Spray, according to reporting  by the New York Daily News.

The incident occurred when a student, who is now facing disciplinary action, unleashed the spray on the classroom.

“EMS transported eight students to the hospital, and parents of two students took them to their own doctors,” said a statement from the city's Department of Education.

The deodorant spray, which is a teenage-boy staple, has marketed itself as a way for young men to irresistible attract women.

Slate writer and mother to pre-teen boys Dahlia Lithwick experimented with wearing the spray for a week, and was advised by her teenage nephew to "stay away from the “nasty grossness”-scented products."

Lithwick also found that wearing the Axe fragrance for a week was the best way to stop her children from using them. She says, "Both my kids were so embarrassed that they stopped using it within days of my initiating the experiment. Smell you later, Axe."

North Korea's new tablet is surprisingly good

by Russell Brandom

North Korea is best known for its crushingly oppressive government and comically inept space program — but new reports suggest that the country may be producing a surprisingly respectable touchscreen tablet. A state-produced device called the Samjiyon has been making the rounds at Asian trade shows all year, attracting the attention of both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The hardware isn't as bad as you might think, handling common apps like Angry Birds with noticeable but not uncommon levels of lag. Mostly, it works.

Everything You Need To Know About America's Most Popular And Controversial Rifle

by Brian Jones

AP13041016635

The AR-15 is not just America's most popular rifle, it's at the center of the debate on gun control raging through the United States.

As the smoke clears from a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport this morning, there's a familiar rifle laying on the ground by the feet of officers and first responders — an AR-15.

It was also the weapon of choice for James Holmes in Aurora, Colo., and Adam Lanza in Newtown, Conn.

So here are the specs on the most popular, and controversial rifle in America:

— It fires a 5.56mm, or .223 caliber bullet. It's a small round that moves very quickly, increasing the weapon's maximum effective range. Despite its small size, the round is tremendously lethal.

— The round moves at a rate of nearly 1,000 meters per second.

— Magazines for the weapon (that are in circulation in the U.S.) range from 5 to 100 rounds. With proper training, a shooter can effectively and accurately empty a 30 round magazine in less than a minute, maybe faster.

— The maximum effective range is between 400 and 600 meters, depending on the barrel length, which varies depending on the model of the rifle.

— Much of what makes the AR-15 so popular is its adaptability. Modern AR-15 feature a rail system that allows for custom sights, scopes, and accessories to be placed on the gun.

— AR-15s are readily available in most states. The price fluctuates with demand, and demand is often high, but it typically hovers right around $1,000.

Very little separates a civilian AR-15 from the M-16s that are the standard-issue rifle for the American military. The military versions are semi-automatic, but also come with the ability to fire in a three-round burst; this feature is rarely used.

Bill Gates says putting worldwide internet access before malaria research is 'a joke'

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Bill Gates is once again speaking out against the internet-first approach many tech leaders have taken to philanthropy. "As a priority? It’s a joke," Gates tells the Financial Times, when asked about how Mark Zuckerberg's plan to bring the whole world online compared to malaria research. "Hmm, which is more important, connectivity or malaria vaccine? If you think connectivity is the key thing, that’s great. I don’t." Though Gates still serves as Microsoft's chairman, most of his focus these days is in philanthropy through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, addressing quality of life issues including eradicating diseases and preventing childhood deaths.

India begins construction on the world's largest statue

by Nathan Ingraham

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable statues in the world, but soon it'll be dwarfed by the sheer size of India's planned Statue of Unity. The new statue of Sardar Patel, the first home minister of independent India will be the largest in the world — its planned height of 600 feet means it'll be just about twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty. According to AFP, the meta statue will take about four years to complete and cost an estimated $300 million, to be funded through public funds and private donations.

However, India is also asking its citizens to chip in — the country is soliciting donations of scrap metal and tools to be used in the statue's construction. "We have asked farmers from every village in India...

Sony launches 8 million flower petals from a volcano to promote its 4K TVs

by Chris Welch

In a flashy effort to illustrate just how much detail is packed into its 4K TVs, Sony has released a new commercial that features 8 million petals erupting from a volcano in Costa Rica. The waves of red, pink, yellow, and purple engulf a nearby village, and the cinematography here immediately evokes memories of the famous bouncing ball ad Sony produced for its Bravia TV line. It's a gorgeous production, but there's also some significance to the visuals: the 8 million petals represent each individual pixel contained in Sony's 4K sets — four times the detail of 1080p.

We're not sure it's going to sell hardware (especially at current prices), but Sony's latest commercial proves that the company has one of the most creative and ambitious...

The Founder Of An Elephant Sanctuary In Thailand Is Named 'Traveler Of The Year'

by Madeline Stone

Katherine Connor Nat Geo travelerKatherine Connor's life changed forever when she left her job in London and embarked on a trip around Asia 10 years ago

Shortly into her travels, she formed a bond with Boon Lott, a three-month-old elephant calf whom she met while volunteering in an elephant hospital in northern Thailand. As she fought to keep him healthy, raising money to prevent a premature separation from his mother, she decided to dedicate her life to protecting abused elephants like him.

"Every place I visited — so-called sanctuaries — were all about making money, exploiting elephants, bringing in the tourists and keeping tourists happy," she said to National Geographic Traveler's George W. Stone. "Many people do not realize that riding in a chair on the back of an elephant is seriously damaging and painful for the elephant."

In 2005 she founded the Boon Lott Elephant Sanctuary, in honor of her first pachyderm friend. Located on hundreds of acres of fenced-off forestland in northern Thailand, the sanctuary allows the elephants to roam and grow in their natural habitat.

Connor's story captured the hearts of thousands of National Geographic Traveler readers, who after a month of voting have named her the 2013 People's Choice Traveler of the Year

"I am deeply honored to have won the People’s Choice Award. It is a very exciting opportunity to raise the profile for Thailand’s elephants and educate the public about the cruelty elephants suffer when forced to entertain tourists traveling to Thailand," she said.

She hopes her work will inspire others to explore and preserve the world around them.

"There’s an education out there that we can’t get from sitting behind a desk—and travel is central to this," Connor said to Stone. "We have to challenge ourselves."

Why Some People Want To Abolish Daylight Saving Time

by Jennifer Welsh

Daylight Saving Time

You may be excited for an extra hour of sleep this weekend — when our clocks "fall back" at 2:00 a.m. on Nov. 3. This marks the end of daylight saving time (DST) when we push our clocks forward in the spring so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

But there are people who wish we never had daylight saving time in the first place, and want to abolish it.

Daylight saving time was originally started to save coal during World War I — so that people who normally wake up hours after the sunrise and stayed up late after dark burning energy to light their homes would have more daylight hours later in the evening, therefore saving energy.

A March 2012 national survey by Rasmussen Reports found that 45% of American adults think daylight savings is worth the hassle, but nearly as many — 40% — disagree. Fifteen percent are undecided.

What's the problem with DST?

The argument that DST saves energy has been criticized. According to Mr. Michael Downing, the author of "Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time," congressional studies on the energy savings of daylight saving time haven't shown it to actually decrease energy use.

There's even an advocacy group, the folks behind Standardtime.com, who want to abolish daylight saving time altogether. Energy-saving claims are "unproven," they write: "If we are saving energy, let's go year-round with daylight saving time. If we are not saving energy, let's drop daylight saving time!"

Early studies on the energy savings of daylight saving time didn't show it to actually decrease energy use. A more recent study in 2008 did show a small amount of energy savings after we extended DST.

According to the Christian Science Monitor:

Most advocates cite a 2008 report to Congress by the Department of Energy which showed that total electricity savings from the extended daylight saving period amounted to 1.3 terawatt-hours, or 0.03 percent of electricity consumption over the year. That's a tiny number. But if electricity costs 10 cents per kilowatt, that means an estimated $130 million in savings each year.

Sometimes, DST seems to increase energy use: In Indiana, when daylight saving time was implemented statewide in 2006, researchers saw that while people used less electricity for light, those gains were canceled out by people who used more air conditioning during the early evenings (for example, 6 p.m. would feel more like 5 p.m. when the sun is still shining bright in the summer and their homes haven't had the chance to cool off).

DST also increases gasoline consumption, something the petroleum industry has known since 1930. This is probably because evening activities increase — since it stays light out longer — and evening activities usually use gasoline.

The lack of synchronization with the European daylight saving time change costs the airline industry $147 million a year, according to The Atlantic. There are also health issues with the change, including possible increases in heart attacks and accidents.

Why keep it?

More evening light means that people go out and spend money. Downing told NPR that this is in the form of shopping and even going out and playing a round of golf — the golf industry told Congress that an extra month of daylight saving was worth $200 million in 1986. The BBQ industry said extending DST would boost sales by $100 million.

Extending daylight saving time to November also helps the Halloween industry — the longer kids can trick-or-treat, the more candy you need to buy.

A world divided

Other areas of the world have abolished daylight saving time, or never had it to begin with. Here's the breakdown:

DaylightSaving World SubdivisionsSome parts of there U.S. have taken their own initiative not to observe daylight saving time, including most of Arizona, and before 2006, parts of Indiana.

This decision is left up to the individual counties. Choosing not observe DST in a county where nearby cities do can also be problematic.

This leads to some funky time zone borders (imagine being in that DST-free island in Arizona!). And daylight saving just adds to that confusion.

An alternate plan

Standardtime.com has a strange suggestion: have only two time zones in the continental U.S. and have them be two hours apart, an idea that The Atlantic calls "a simple plan to fix [DST]":

proposedCompare that to the current state of time zones in the U.S., which are broken into four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific time, all one hour different. That means that the time in California is three hours earlier than the time in New York.US time zonesThese four time zones exist so that areas in the east of each time zone get sunrise at about the same time. With standardtime.com's system the coasts would only be two hours apart, facilitating travel and meeting times, but sunrise and sun set times would be drastically different for many areas of the nation.

That's because the sun hits the eastern side of a time zone first and the western side about an hour later in the day in our approximately hour-long time zones. Extending the eastern time zone into the middle of the country would mean sunrise would happen very late in the morning.

For example, today the sun rose in New York City at 7:27 a.m. EDT and in Chicago it rose at 7:24 a.m. CDT. If we were in the same time zone, that would have been 8:24 "Eastern Time" in Chicago and even later in more western areas of the country. For example, sunrise in Lubbock, Texas was at 8:07 CDT. In standardtime.com's two-time-zone plan, that would mean the sun would rise after 9:00 a.m. "Eastern Time." We think this would make it pretty tough to start the working day on time.

Bottom line: This plan is dumb and won't fix anything. Since DST doesn't seem to offer major energy-saving benefits, and could even cost money, we should probably get rid of our twice-yearly time change ritual. Counties should pick one time zone and stick to it year-round, and we probably shouldn't drastically change our current time-zone breakdown.

US intelligence agencies have their own private Twitter

Twitter occupies a strange place in national security circles, officially banned within most workplaces but still a go-to source for political gossip and occaisonal cause for a high-profile firing, as with the recent @NatSecWonk account. As a result, Pentagon and other intelligence officials decided to copy the service with a privately run, internal microblogging service called eChirp. Established in 2009, it's a copy of Twitter in nearly every respect, right down to the blue bird.

Global waste production to triple by 2100, led by sub-Saharan Africa

by Jeremy Jacquot
Mesa, AZ, landfill.

One of the unfortunate but inescapable consequences of population and economic growth has been the unabated proliferation of trash. The "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" has become as emblematic of our soaring waste output as have the millions of cheap, disposable goods that we've come to rely on.

Every day, we generate over 3.5 million tons of solid waste—a tenfold increase over the past century. That figure will likely double again by 2025. On our current path, it could balloon to over 11 million tons per day by 2100, a tripling of today's rate, with sub-Saharan Africa fueling most of the growth. These worrisome projections, a group of authors argue in this week's Nature, underscore the already obvious need to balance future population growth and urbanization with more stringent waste reduction efforts.

Predicting “peak waste”

The authors based their waste production estimates on a model that blended socio-economic indicators like GDP and education with environmental parameters like energy use and climate trends. They considered 3 scenarios with differing populations and rates of urbanization. The lower the population and higher the urbanization rate, the lower the amount of waste we're expected to generate.

This Appears To Be The Scene Of The LAX Shooting

by Brian Jones

BYAUuXdCcAAs0aV

There has been a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport today.

A federal law enforcement official told the LA Times that a TSA officer was shot and killed at a passenger screening checkpoint.

NBC reports that three other TSA agents have been wounded, one of whom is in critical condition.

The gunman is dead, according to the Times and ABC via law enforcement sources.

Law enforcement sources said investigators are trying to determine whether the gunman worked at LAX.

Multiple photos from eyewitnesses show an assault rifle of the AR-15 variety laying at the feet of responding officers.

The AR-15 is among the most common rifles in the United States, but are banned in many states as a result of increasingly stringent gun laws.

You can now use PayPal to fund your PS3 PlayStation Store purchases

by Engadget

PayPal support for Sony Entertainment Network, the company’s online digital content hub, is nothing new — Sony integrated the billing option in January of this year. Now, however, PlayStation 3 users that want a more secure way to fund their purchases directly within the PlayStation Store will find PayPal as an alternative at checkout. There’s still a $5 – $150 cap on the amount you can add to your wallet, so you can’t exactly go hog-wild with the downloads. But, hey, at least you now have even more flexibility to drain that checking account.

YouTube Isn't Playing Nice With TV Networks Anymore

by Aaron Taube

TV on fire

Last week, we told you about Publicis Groupe's big deal to purchase tens of millions of dollars in YouTube advertising and how the move was a harbinger of how the online video platform might steal bigger slices of television's advertising revenues in the future.

Now, Ad Age is reporting that YouTube will no longer offer television networks and movie studios the so-called "sweetheart deals" that gave the networks 70% of the advertising revenues YouTube made from ads placed on content from ABC, NBC, and the like.

Instead, YouTube is offering a deal by which networks will have to settle for the 45% split YouTube offers online-only content networks like Machinima and AwesomenessTV.

The terms can be seen as something of a power move by YouTube, evidence that the company's ad sales department feels it has enough leverage over traditional video content producers to twist their arms into giving up some of the guaranteed money they once received simply for gracing YouTube with their premium content.

Now, YouTube is saying it no longer needs mainstream television's stamp of authenticity, forcing the networks to compete on the same playing field as the rest of the platform's users and professional content providers.

The new terms are not quite take-it-or-leave-it for the networks, though. While YouTube has lowered the percentage networks it will get when it sells ads at the baseline price, Ad Age reports that YouTube is lowering that baseline and offering the networks an opportunity to keep 100% of the revenues they receive beyond those minimum prices.

By doing so, YouTube is betting that the 35% increase in its slice of the baseline revenue pie will amount to more money than whatever revenues the television networks can get from advertisers by charging them higher prices.

If television networks accept the terms YouTube is offering, the only way they can avoid giving up another sliver of the advertising pie will be to convince advertisers that their inventory is of significantly higher quality or easier to purchase than that of other YouTube content providers. Otherwise, the advertisers might not be willing to pay more money per view than they would have to elsewhere on the site.

In short, YouTube appears to be betting on the following theories:

  1. That viewers no longer associate the traditional broadcast television networks with a higher level of quality than made-for-online video.
  2. That advertising buyers will recognize this fact and be unwilling to pay higher prices to have their ads placed beside content from the traditional television networks.
  3. That even if the new contract terms YouTube is offering give the networks less money than the old ones, its growing viewership will require the networks to continue posting content on YouTube.

At present, it looks like the networks will have at least a healthy shot at commanding the higher advertising they'd need to win the deal. As Ad Age points out, the networks have the advantage of packaging YouTube media buys with television ad purchases.

Since major media buyers are still spending around 60% of their advertising budgets on television, they might be willing to pay the networks higher prices for YouTube ads in order to avoid the headache of having to make a separate, smaller, YouTube-only ad buy.

Either way, YouTube has placed its cards on the table and pushed a couple chips into the middle. Now it's television's turn to decide whether to call.

Secretaris-generaal Ban Ki-moon van de VN heeft Nederland bedankt voor de bijdrage aan de missie in Mali.
