The Ukraine-Russia Cyber War Is Heating Up

by Jeremy Bender and Michael Kelley

crimea computer russia

As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to mount — especially with Crimea's parliament voting to join Russia — cyberwarfare has begun.

Russia has reportedly been tampering with communications networks, limiting access to many Ukrainian politicians cellphones.

Internet signals have also been compromised after Russian forces raided the Ukrainian telecommunications infrastructure.

Jarno Limnéll, a former cybersecurity officer with Finland's Defense Forces, notes that any attacks on key services or critical infrastructure could further escalate the situation.

Speaking to US News, he said attacks targeting electricity and key communications "could probably be considered as crossing the line.”

Multiple news websites, favoring both the West and Russia, have so far been brought down after an increase in direct denial of service attacks. As of yet, the attacks are primarily for propaganda purposes, with both sides attempting to check each other's influence.

To get an idea of the cyber "battle for hearts and minds," as Limnéll says, check out this map showing the primary language used on VKontakte, the Russian version of Facebook.

Ukraine Language Divide

Russia has a history of using cyberwarfare. In 2007, Estonia suffered 10 days of intense cyber-attacks that disrupted its financial sector after a disagreement between Russia and Estonia over the relocation of a Soviet war memorial.

In 2008 cyber-attacks were also coordinated with Russia's invasion of Georgia, although Russia denies having carried out the attacks.

Both Russia and Ukraine have multiple cyber-criminal gangs and patriotic hackers who can be roused to hack for the national cause.

Apple Reportedly ‘Scrambling’ to Make Required Changes to In-App Purchase Policies

by MacRumors

ios_7_iconApple may be rushing to make changes to its App Store in order to comply with an earlier FTC agreement that requires it to modify its in-app billing system, reports ZDNet. Apple has until March 31 to make the changes required by the FTC and may be trying to roll them out in the company’s forthcoming iOS 7.1 update.

As part of this FTC settlement, Apple must modify its billing practices to obtain consumers’ express consent before billing them for an in-app purchase. Apple also must provide customers with a way to easily withdraw this consent for future purchases.

While it might sound trivial, changing the App Store to obtain “consumers’ express, informed consent” before billing them is a significant change. It involves fundamental changes to the App Store order flow and there are a lot of dependencies involved.

One source I spoke to says that it’s taking Apple longer than expected to make the required changes. In order to meet the government’s second criteria (the option to withdraw their consent at any time) Apple must require a password for all IAPs by default, and perhaps make a no-password window an option via settings.

These requirements likely necessitate some changes to Apple’s iTunes payment processing system, which now needs to verify that consent was given before processing a payment. It may also require some modifications to iOS 7, including its Restrictions feature that already provides limits on in-app purchases by children, although some aspects of the update may be able to be deployed remotely.

These new in-app purchasing requirements have not been spotted in any iOS 7.1 beta releases, suggesting Apple is still implementing any necessary changes on the operating system side. ZDNet‘s source says the company would like to roll out the changes as part of iOS 7.1, but given word that iOS 7.1 is due “any day now” in order to support streaming of next week’s SXSW iTunes Festival, it is possible that the in-app purchase changes could be pushed back to another minor iOS update before the end of the month if required.

Russia Test-Fired An Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

by Michael Kelley

Russia just test-fired a intercontinental ballistic missile that hit its target in Kazakhstan, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Yegorov told state-run news agency RIA.

Stocks immediately dove as the world watches the crisis in Ukraine unfold, although the intersection of events appears to be a coincidence.

Kremlin spokesman Peskov says Russia planned the missile tests well in advance, and that the U.S. knew about it before Russia invaded the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

Russia occupied the strategic Black Sea peninsula last week after pro-EU protesters Kremlin-backed President Viktor Yanukovych. Tensions are high.

#Ukranian base in #Yevpatoria is surrounded by a large group of armed #Russians. Situation is extremely tense.

— Ukraine Reporter (@StateOfUkraine) March 4, 2014

The launch site was about 280 miles east of the Ukrainian border. The missile, a 60-foot-long RS-12M (aka SS-25 Sickle), is designed to carry a nuclear warhead and its range is about 6,000 miles.

Lightning Cables Failing Due to Corrosion, Cause Unclear [iOS Blog]

by MacRumors

Since being introduced alongside the iPhone 5 in 2012, Apple’s Lightning cable has been criticized for its poor durability, as it is prone to breakage and fraying near the adapter.

It appears the Lightning cable may be vulnerable to corrosion as well, according to a report from ZDNet‘s Jason O’Grady, who noticed corrosion on the gold contacts of his Lightning cable after it had been failing to charge his iPhone.

corrodedlightningcable

About a month ago the Apple Lightning to USB cable (PN: MD818ZM/A, $19) that I keep in my vehicle for charging my iPhone 5s began to fail. At first charging was intermittent, then within a week the cable wouldn’t charge my iPhone at all. A closer look at the male end of the Apple Lightning to USB cable reveals that several of the gold contacts have become corroded.

In addition to O’Grady, several other users on Apple’s Support Communities have experienced corrosion issues as well, with reports dating back to 2012. Several users have been told by Apple that it is likely that the cables were exposed to moisture to cause the corrosion, but several reports suggest there was no contact with liquid before the corrosion appeared.

Apple Community user “Brockap3″ supplied photos of his Lightning cable under a microscope and suggested that the corrosion was happening primarily on the VBUS/V++/Power pin on the Lightning cable. He offered two explanations for the issue:

1) two gold electrodes placed in an aqueous solution with a positive voltage on one wire and ground applied to the other will corrode the positive gold electrode away

2) electrical arcing causing the corrosion (originally I dismissed this as it is just USB – i.e. 5 V /2 A max)

After examining the male and female sides, it would seem both are likely culprits, but you would have to have some pretty serious condensation on the pins to get this to happen with steam.

lightningcablemicroscope
Apple does appear to be exchanging Lightning cables that are unusable due to the corrosive deposits, so it is likely that users experiencing issues can have their cables replaced at an Apple retail location or through an Authorized Service Provider.

Weathered old HTC HD2 dresses up like a Nokia X

by Engadget

You may remember the HTC HD2 from posts such as “will it play Tekken 3?” and “wait, it runs Windows RT now?” Despite the handset’s age, a stalwart community keeps it relevant by getting anything and everything to run on the developer favorite. It’s only fitting, then, that the HD2 be one of the first to don Nokia’s heavily skinned version of Android, other than the unreleased X family, of course. That’s right: An XDA Developers forum member by the name of gilbert32 has apparently succeeded in porting some form of the Nokia X Android build onto a rather beat-up-looking HD2. We say succeeded, but while it looks the part and plays a booting sound when fired up, “everything else” is admittedly non-functional. Then again, if the goal was to show the HD2 still has legs after all this time, then mission accomplished, sir.

Give me $300 or the website gets it!

by Russell Brandom

This past Thursday at 10:26AM, Meetup CEO Heiferman got a strange email. "A competitor asked me to perform a DDoS attack on your website. I can stop the attack for $300 USD. Let me know if you are interested in my offer." Before Heiferman could finish reading the email, the site came under attack, swamped with an 8.2 gigabit attack that took it down almost immediately. It took 24 hours to bring the site back online, and it didn't stay online for long. The site came up Friday morning, only to go down again Saturday afternoon. It came back Saturday at midnight, then went down again Sunday night. As of press time, they were still struggling to keep the it live.

Samsung’s KitKat update seems to remove benchmark-boosting “shenanigans”

by Andrew Cunningham
Samsung's Android 4.4.2 update appears to correct the boosting behavior we encountered in 4.3.
Andrew Cunningham

When we reviewed Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 back in October, we noticed that it was doing something funny. Launching most benchmarking applications would kick the phone's CPU into overdrive, forcing all CPU cores to run at their maximum rated speeds for as long as the application was open. Maxing out the CPU frequencies threw a wrench in our standard suite of tests, inflating some benchmark scores by around 20 percent.

This wasn't the first time Samsung had been caught, um, "enhancing" the performance of its hardware—AnandTech had discovered similar CPU and GPU optimizations in the international version of the Galaxy S4 two months before. However, this was the first time we had seen it show up in the North American version of one of Samsung's phones. Even worse, as Samsung rolled the Android 4.3 update out to its older phones, other phones all began to exhibit the same behavior. Our AT&T Galaxy S III and Galaxy S4 didn't max out their CPUs under Android 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 (respectively), but they started to act just like the Note 3 after being updated. Not only were Samsung's benchmark boosting additions intentional, but they had become a "feature" baked into its branch of the Android tree.

We've changed our testing procedures to avoid this particular kind of benchmark boosting, and I was prepared to write it off as an annoying fact of life—after all, while benchmarks are useful as a way to determine the relative performance of a piece of hardware, they aren't the only factor (or even a particularly important factor) in most peoples' purchasing decisions. That was before I heard from John Poole, whose company Primate Labs develops the Geekbench CPU benchmark we use in most of our reviews. After working with Poole and the Primate Labs team for a few days, we can now say a lot more about just how Samsung was implementing the boosting "feature" in Android 4.3, and that it appears to be absent from the company's Android 4.4 update.

Actually, Samsung Didn't Pay Ellen To Use A Galaxy Phone To Take Selfies At The Oscars

by Steve Kovach

ellen oscars selfie

Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres caught a lot of heat Sunday night for using a Samsung Galaxy phone to take that infamous celebrity-filled selfie while using an iPhone backstage.

But according to a source familiar with the situation, Ellen was not a paid spokesperson for Samsung. Samsung only paid ABC as an Oscars sponsor, not Ellen individually.

Our source said when Ellen decided to take the selfie, Samsung gave her the phone to do it because it was already paying ABC to sponsor the event. Ellen is actually an iPhone user and wasn't obligated to use Samsung's Galaxy phone.

So there you have it, controversy over.

Snow Leopard updates are probably done—here are your OS X upgrade options

by Andrew Cunningham
End of the line, Snowy.
Apple

Apple offers no end-of-life roadmaps for its operating systems, and it doesn't officially comment on whether support has dried up for this or that version of OS X. The best you can do is look at historical data. Since switching to a yearly release cadence with Lion back in 2011, Apple seems to be willing to support whatever the latest version is, plus the two preceding versions. When OS X 10.9.2 was released earlier this week, it was accompanied by security updates for OS X 10.8 and 10.7 but not for 2009's OS X 10.6.

It's the first major security update that Snow Leopard has missed—the OS is still getting iTunes updates, but its last major security patch happened back in September. This has prompted a flurry of posts from various outlets. All point out the same Net Applications data that says 10.6 still powers around 19 percent of Macs. Most compare the OS X support cycle to the much longer Windows cycle. Some make a bigger deal about it than others. None really tell anyone in that 19 percent what to do next.

You'll need to know the exact kind of Mac you're using before proceeding—typing your serial number into this Service and Support page should give you the information you need if you're not sure. Launching the System Profiler application from the Utilities folder will show you your serial number and your Mac's specific model identifier (something like MacBook4,1 or iMac11,2), the latter of which can be used with this EveryMac lookup page to find what you're looking for.

Hundreds Of Gunmen Surround Ukraine Military Base In Crimea

by Associated Press

ukraine

PEREVALNE, Ukraine (AP) — Hundreds of armed men in trucks and armored vehicles surrounded a Ukrainian military base Sunday in Crimea, blocking its soldiers from leaving. The outnumbered Ukrainians placed a tank at the base's gate, leaving the two sides in a tense standoff.

In Kiev, Ukraine's new prime minister urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to pull back his military, warning that "we are on the brink of disaster."

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk spoke a day after Russian forces took over the strategic Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine without firing a shot.

"There was no reason for the Russian Federation to invade Ukraine," Yatsenyuk said after a closed session of his new parliament in Kiev.

So far, the new government in Kiev has been powerless to react to Russian military tactics. Armed men in uniforms without insignia have moved freely about the key peninsula, occupying airports, smashing equipment at an air base and besieging a Ukrainian infantry base.

Russia has its key Black Sea Fleet stationed on the Crimean peninsula — which was formerly part of Russia until 1954 — and nearly 60 percent of Crimea's residents identify themselves as Russian.

Putin has defied calls from the West to pull back his troops, insisting that Russia has a right to protect its interests and Russian-speakers in Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine. However, there has been no sign of ethnic Russians facing attacks in Crimea or elsewhere in Ukraine.

President Barack Obama spoke with Putin by telephone for 90 minutes on Saturday and expressed his "deep concern" about "Russia's clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity," the White House said. Obama warned that Russia's "continued violation of international law will lead to greater political and economic isolation."

Unidentified troops pulled up to the Ukrainian military base at Perevalne on the Crimea peninsula Sunday in a convoy that included at least 13 trucks and four armored vehicles with mounted machine guns. The trucks carried 30 soldiers each and had Russian license plates.

A dozen Ukrainian soldiers, some with clips in their rifles, stood on the other side of the military gate. Neither side would speak to AP journalists.

The new Ukrainian government came to power last week following months of pro-democracy protests against a pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych, and his decision to turn Ukraine toward Russia instead of the European Union. Yanukovych fled to Russia after more than 80 people died, most of them demonstrators killed by police. He insists he's still president.

Since then, tensions have risen sharply between the two capitals.

Ukraine's acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, announced late Saturday that he had ordered Ukraine's armed forces to be at full readiness because of the threat of "potential aggression." He also said he had ordered stepped-up security at nuclear power plants, airports and other strategic infrastructure.

Ukraine's population of 46 million has divided loyalties between Russia and Europe, with much of western Ukraine advocating closer ties with the EU, while eastern and southern regions look to Russia for support.

The Interfax news agency reported the speaker of Crimea's legislature, Vladimir Konstantinov, as saying the local authorities did not recognize the government in Kiev. He said a planned referendum on March 30 would ask voters about the region's future status.

But the U.S. and other Western governments have few options to counter Russia's military moves.

NATO's secretary general said Russia had violated the U.N. charter with its military action in Ukraine, and he urged Moscow to "'de-escalate the tensions." NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen spoke in Brussels as he was about to open a meeting Sunday of the alliance's political decision-making body to discuss the crisis.

Ukraine is not a NATO member, meaning the U.S. and Europe are not obligated to come to its defense. But Ukraine has taken part in some alliance military exercises and contributed troops to its response force.

The U.S. also said it will suspend participation in preparatory meetings for the Group of Eight economic summit planned in June to be held at Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi, site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius agreed, saying on Europe 1 radio that planning for the summit should be put on hold.

France "condemns the Russian military escalation" in Ukraine, and Moscow must "realize that decisions have costs," he said Sunday.

REPORT: Ukrainian Warship Defects To Russia

by Paul Szoldra

Hetman Sahaydachniy ukraine ship

Ukrainian Navy flagship Hetman Sahaidachny has reportedly refused orders from Kiev and defected to the Russian side, a Russian senator has claimed in an interview with Ivestia Daily.

"Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag," Sen. Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia. "The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovych."

The ship recently took part in counter-piracy patrols with EU naval forces and was sailing towards its homeport of Sevastopol, Naval Today reports.

Ousted Ukraine President Yanukovych, under Kremlin protection in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, railed against those who forced him out of power in a press conference on Feb. 28, calling them "radical mobsters" who took over the country.

"I believe that the Ukrainian parliament is not legitimate," he said.

This is a developing story, and this post will be updated as we learn more.

OBAMA TO PUTIN: WITHDRAW YOUR TROOPS

by Brett LoGiurato

Barack Obama calling Vladimir Putin

President Barack Obama spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin Saturday afternoon, hours after the Russian parliament's approval of military force in the Ukrainian region of Crimea.

The White House said that the call lasted for approximately 90 minutes, with Obama calling Russia's plans for intervention a "clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity." The White House said the U.S. condemns Russia's military action in Ukraine as a "breach of international law," one that could hurt Russia's standing in the world and lead to "political and economic isolation."

Here's the full White House readout of the call:

President Obama spoke for 90 minutes this afternoon with President Putin of Russia about the situation in Ukraine. President Obama expressed his deep concern over Russia’s clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a breach of international law, including Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter, and of its 1997 military basing agreement with Ukraine, and which is inconsistent with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the Helsinki Final Act. The United States condemns Russia’s military intervention into Ukrainian territory.

The United States calls on Russia to de-escalate tensions by withdrawing its forces back to bases in Crimea and to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine. We have consistently said that we recognize Russia’s deep historic and cultural ties to Ukraine and the need to protect the rights of ethnic Russian and minority populations within Ukraine.  The Ukrainian government has made clear its commitment to protect the rights of all Ukrainians and to abide by Ukraine’s international commitments, and we will continue to urge them to do so.

President Obama told President Putin that, if Russia has concerns about the treatment of ethnic Russian and minority populations in Ukraine, the appropriate way to address them is peacefully through direct engagement with the government of Ukraine and through the dispatch of international observers under the auspices of the United Nations Security Council or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).  As a member of both organizations, Russia would be able to participate. President Obama urged an immediate effort to initiate a dialogue between Russia and the Ukrainian government, with international facilitation, as appropriate. The United States is prepared to participate.

President Obama made clear that Russia’s continued violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would negatively impact Russia’s standing in the international community. In the coming hours and days, the United States will urgently consult with allies and partners in the UN Security Council, the North Atlantic Council, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and with the signatories of the Budapest Memorandum. The United States will suspend upcoming participation in preparatory meetings for the G-8. Going forward, Russia’s continued violation of international law will lead to greater political and economic isolation.

The people of Ukraine have the right to determine their own future. President Obama has directed his Administration to continue working urgently with international partners to provide support for the Ukrainian government, including urgent technical and financial assistance. Going forward, we will continue consulting closely with allies and partners, the Ukrainian government and the International Monetary Fund, to provide the new government with significant assistance to secure financial stability, to support needed reforms, to allow Ukraine to conduct successful elections, and to support Ukraine as it pursues a democratic future.

The Kremlin said in a statement that Obama initiated the call. It said that Obama expressed concern about the use of military force in Ukraine, but Putin asserted the right to protect Russia and Russian-speaking citizens in the Crimea region.

A senior Obama administration official said that members of Obama's national security team met Saturday at the White House to "discuss potential policy options" in response to Russia's plans for intervention. Obama did not attend, but was briefed on the meeting.

"The President's national security team met today to receive an update on the situation in Ukraine and discuss potential policy options," the senior administration official said. "We will provide further updates later this afternoon."

Obama said in a statement from the White House on Friday there would be "costs" if Russia intervened in Ukraine. This prompted the upper house of Russia's parliament to then recommend the Russian ambassador in Washington be recalled.

The Internet Is Actually Controlled By 14 People Who Hold 7 Secret Keys

by Julie Bort

ICANN Key Ceremony

This sounds like something out of a Dan Brown book, but it isn't: The whole Internet is controlled by seven actual, physical keys.

The Guardian's James Ball was recently allowed to observe the highly secure ritual known as a key ceremony

The people conducting the ceremony are part of an organization called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is responsible for assigning numerical Internet addresses to websites and computers and translating them into the normal web addresses that people type into their browsers.

For instance, type 64.27.101.155 into your browser, and you'll be taken to Business Insider's web page. But www.businessinsider.com is easier for people to remember. ICANN maps the numbers (easier for computers to use) with words (easier for humans to use).

If someone were to gain control of ICANN's database, that person would control the Internet. For instance, the person could send people to fake bank websites instead of real bank websites.

On the other hand, if a calamity happened, the ICANN database could need to be rebuilt. So ICANN came up with a way to do that without entrusting too much control to any one person. It selected seven people as key holders and gave each one an actual key to Internet. It selected seven more people to be backup keyholders: 14 people in all.

The physical keys unlock safety deposit boxes stashed around the world. Inside those boxes are smart keycards. Put the seven smartcards together and you have the "master key." The master key is really some computer code, a password of sorts, that can access the ICANN database.

Four times a year since 2010 the seven keyholders meet for the key ceremony where they generate a new master key, i.e. a new password.

The security to be admitted to the ceremony is intense, Ball reports, and involves passing through a series of locked doors using key codes and hand scanners, until entering a room so secure that no electronic communications can escape it.

The group conducts the ritual, then each person files out of the room one by one, and then they all head to a restaurant and party.

Here's Ball's detailed account of the ceremony that most recently occurred.

Here's a video of the very first key ceremony conducted in 2010. Skip to 1:58 to see the ceremony.

This Map Explains Why Ukraine Is So Divided Over Russia

by Harrison Jacobs

After an emergency Parliamentary session Saturday, Russia approved President Vladimir Putin’s request to send troops into the turbulent nation of Ukraine.

The move came after Russia had already started taking hold of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, an autonomous parliamentary republic within Ukraine. Crimea has been largely pro-Russia, while other parts of Ukraine would like to be closer to the European Union.

Here's a helpful map that explains Ukraine’s “East-West divide":

Ethnolingusitic_map_of_ukraine

As you can see, the west of Ukraine (including the capital of Kiev) is all predominantly Ukrainian-speaking. The entire eastern half of the country is either predominantly Russian-speaking or has significant Russian minorities. If you look at the Crimean peninsula (the brown area to the south), there is an ethnic Russian majority.

Crimea has long been a disputed territory, according an explainer on the region's history in the blog Marc to Market. Though it was annexed by Russia in 1783, it was the subject of numerous wars in the 1700s and 1800s.

In 1954, after years as part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (the largest state of the USSR), Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea to Ukraine, another Soviet state at the time.

After the USSR fell, Ukraine became a sovereign nation. It was decided then that Crimea would become an “autonomous republic” inside Ukraine, essentially giving it more autonomy over local issues while still being subject to the Ukrainian government.

Many ethnic Russians in Crimea have long wanted a more independent Crimean state, with its own president and policies, and others consider Sevastopol, Crimea’s largest city, to be a part of Russia.

Bitcoin-Stealing OS X Trojan Now Masquerading as ‘Angry Birds’ and Other Popular Mac Apps

by MacRumors

bitcoin.pngA Bitcoin-stealing trojan has been detected in downloads claiming to be cracked versions of popular Mac applications, reports security firm ESET through its We Live Security blog. The OSX/CoinThief.A malware was discovered in popular Bitcoin software earlier this month by SecureMac, but is now being used to target users of more mainstream apps.

The trojan initially surfaced on open source software hosting site GitHub, and it was quickly bundled into several Bitcoin apps available through multiple download sites. Further investigation by ESET has now uncovered the trojan masquerading as cracked versions of popular Mac apps such as BBEdit, Pixelmator, Angry Birds, and Delicious Library.

OSX/CoinThief.A involves a malicious browser add-on used to intercept logins for Bitcoin wallet sites and related exchanges such as MtGox, BTC-e, and blockchain.info. Stolen login credentials are then forwarded to the malware’s developer.

There is clearly strong evidence that the trojan was specifically designed to profit from the current Bitcoin craze and fluctuating exchange rates.

According to detection statistics gathered by the ESET LiveGrid, the threat is mostly active amongst Mac users based in the United States.

The websites where these files are being distributed from have not been revealed, but Mac owners can prevent infection by avoiding pirated software and downloading titles directly from the developer’s website or the Mac App Store. Users can find instructions on how to check for and remove the malware on SecureMac’s blog post.

The business of bleeding horseshoe crabs

by Adrianne Jeffries

Every year, half a million horseshoe crabs are captured and bled alive by biomedical companies, according to a fascinating story in The Atlantic. The blood, colored baby blue because it contains copper, coagulates when it detects bacteria and can therefore be used to test for contamination. The crabs are strapped into harnesses, spiked with shunts, drained of up to 30 percent of their blood, and eventually released. "I don't know about you, but the idea that every single person in America who has ever had an injection has been protected because we harvest the blood of a forgettable sea creature with a hidden chemical superpower makes me feel a little bit crazy," Alexis Madrigal writes.

The Syrian Government Is Using Famine As A Weapon Of War

by Jeremy Bender

syria

The Syrian Civil War — already noted for horrors ranging from chemical weapons to the indiscriminate shelling of civilian neighborhoods — has reached a new low, NOW reports.

Taking advantage of the already horrendous humanitarian situation, the Syrian government has now turned to using famine as a weapon of war. To be precise, Syrian forces will blockade a city or neighborhood until rebels agree to hand over their guns and submit wanted activists in exchange for food deliveries, according to NOW.

Qusai Zakarya, a former member of the rebel council from the Moadamiyah, told NOW:

"... First they asked us to raise the regime flag over the highest point in the town, which is the water tank, and to declare that they now had the town under their control. This gave Assad a media victory. Then they asked to hand over our weapons and also some of the wanted activists to face interrogations with no guarantees as to their safety. They also assigned a military commander in Moadamiyah to have the FSA working under his authority. There were a lot of civilians in the town and we couldn't have their blood on our hands, so we agreed.”

Three days after the city surrendered, the regime brought in just enough food to keep people alive, although it was still less than a meal per person. For each successive delivery, the regime would raise its demands — eventually asking the rebels to hand over all their small arms.

Pior to the government food deliveries, civilians had resorted to eating stray animals to stay alive. Zakarya told Vice that [Syrian president Bashar Hafez al-] "Assad wants to show people that he can give them food and security, if only they surrender."

By and large, the tactics worked. Zakarya eventually turned himself over to the Syrian security forces before fleeing to Beirut.

NASA to admit that astronaut's suit leaked prior to near-drowning

by Amar Toor

NASA today will admit that the near-death of an astronaut during a spacewalk last year could have been avoided, according to a report from ABC News. In a report to be released Wednesday morning, NASA will acknowledge that astronaut Luca Parmitano's suit leaked on two occasions in July. The agency had previously only reported one leak, on July 16th, when Parmitano's suit helmet began filling up with water. Today's report will acknowledge that the suit leaked on July 9th, but news of the mishap never made it up NASA's chain of command.

Bitcoin Has Made A Really Impressive Recovery

by Joe Weisenthal

There's an interesting divergence right now.

The news media is filled with BITCOIN IS DOOMED articles in the wake of the collapse of the exchange Mt. Gox.

Meanwhile, the Bitcoin community is mostly saying: "Yeah, this is bad, but not devastating, and we'll be fine."

And the market so far is much more on the side of the Bitcoin community.

Here's a chart going back a couple of days. The entire Mt. Gox crash is basically totally erased.

Riot Police Get On Their Knees To Beg For Forgiveness For Taking Part In Ukraine Crackdown

by Michael Kelley

These photos by Roman Baluk of Reuters show just how quickly the tables have turned in Ukraine.

During a rally in central Lviv on February 24, local riot police knelt as they apologized to residents for taking part in the crackdown on protesters in Kiev's Independence Square aka Maidan (though they insisted that they did not beat protesters).

Lviv, a city of 760,000 near Ukraine's Western border with Poland, sent thousands of of people to Kiev to fill and defend Maidan. On February 19, the city declared independence from the government of President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted three days later by parliament.

Volodymyr Parasiuk, a 26-year-old protester from Lviv, became a hero on February 21 when he denounced a EU-brokered peace deal and instead called from Yanukovych's immediate ouster.

Subsequently, many of Lviv's police fled the city, but these men have decided to ask forgiveness from the people.
