VIDEO – Mickey Dome Cake at Amorette’s Patisserie

by Rachel Bshero
Kristen

I have no desire to eat this cake but the video is interesting.

The patisserie and cakes at the new Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs are as delicious as they are beautiful, each one a work of art. Today, we get a closer look at the culinary technique that goes into each decadent layer of the Mickey Dome Cake.

Amorette’s Patisserie is now accepting pre-orders for petite cakes, dome cakes and Amorette’s Signature Cake. Orders can be made by calling 407-934-3500 or stop by the patisserie at least 3 days in advance.

When a logo story makes it to Snopes you know it's good (or sad): This month, some online publications started making the claim that Barack Obama changed the White House logo to depict a white flag instead of the stars and stripes, signaling surrender. I bet Obama's Adobe Illustrator game is on point but, yeah, he had nothing to do with it. The change was done during the George W. Bush administration. Many thanks to our ADVx3 Partners

Great Job, Internet!: Obama tries, fails to name everyone who has died on Game Of Thrones

by Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya
Kristen

spoilers I guess.

This is about characters who have died on Game Of Thrones, so if you aren’t caught up on the series, we suggest you stop reading and go do that.

President Barack Obama and Buzzfeed teamed up to encourage people to register to vote, appealing to one of America’s favorite pastimes: Game Of Thrones. In a video, Obama attempts five different activities that are harder than registering to vote—including stacking Cheerios on a stuffed version of Bo, untangling headphones, playing Operation, and making a friendship bracelet for Vice President Joe Biden. But most importantly, Buzzfeed also had the president—a self-proclaimed superfan of Game Of Thrones—attempt to name every character that has ever been killed off the show. Oh, so you like Game Of Thrones, Mr. President? Name three dead people.

He actually manages to do much better than three, and if you want to avoid knowing ...

One best friend is pretty much out the door which opened a door for a new butt kisser/baby sitter for a Teen Mom. Enter someone who will probably be selling stories to the tabloids in a few months, but for now, knows her job is to baby sit all day and night and to post photos to social media under the Teen Mom’s account to make it look like the Teen Mom was there when she wasn’t. The old best friend/baby sitter? She wouldn’t share her drugs with the Teen Mom because the Teen Mom always mooched and never bought her own. Apparently if you want to party with the Teen Mom you need to bow down to her and share.

LA's Most Anticipated Soft Serve Ice Cream Shop Hands Out Free Cones Thursday

by Farley Elliott
Kristen

they have non-dairy flavors. we should check it out.

Magpies Softserve in Silver Lake opens with a bang

Are you currently sweltering in an office somewhere inside the Pyrex baking dish that is Los Angeles? Help is on the way, thanks to Magpies Softserve, which opens in Silver Lake this Thursday with heaps of free ice cream.

The concept comes by way of chefs Warren and Rose Schwartz, and lands in a strip mall at the corner of Hyperion and Griffith Park Boulevard. The plan, Schwartz has said previously, is to provide a true ice cream experience devoid of mixes and powders, with just about everything being made in-house.

That’s a stark contrast to the usual way things are done in the soft serve world, and should help to bring some legitimacy to the ice cream specialty around Los Angeles. Outside of options like the CVT Soft Serve truck, soft serve ice cream is far less common than regular scoop and gelato shops around town.

The menu is still being finalized for Magpies, and the interior likely won’t be finished off until early this week, but so far all plans are go for a Thursday daytime arrival. That’s great news for Warren Schwartz, who of late has been working culinary duty as the lead chef at food delivery startup Munchery, and even better news for Angelenos as a brutal heat wave continues to crush the city.

And as for that free soft serve deal? All you've got to do is show up on Thursday, presumably before they run out.

Watch a Small Dog Live it Up in an $18.5 Million LA Mansion

by Elijah Chiland

corgi share

A corgi lives it up

Real estate agent Ben Bacal is known for giving his listings the Hollywood treatment. Not content with ordinary listing videos or virtual tours, Bacal has spent up to $20,000 in the past making elaborate short films showcasing the homes he is selling. The latest offering advertises a listing Bacal shares with realtor Ness Krief. It centers around a small dog (named "Sherlock Bones" in the video, but played by Instagram-famous corgi Aqua) who has evidently inherited an $18.5 million mansion overlooking the Sunset Strip from his recently deceased owner.

Bones clearly enjoys his lavish lifestyle, taking advantage of the home’s screening room, enormous shower, and—in one of the video’s more unsettling moments—the master bedroom. He also invites all of his friends over (both human and canine) for a pretty fun-looking pool party. In the end—spoiler alert—it turns out this was all a confusing dream. In the reality Sherlock awakes to, he still lives in the house, but is apparently not the owner.

Our Dining in Disneyland guru Heather is full of fantastic ideas when it comes to inventing brand new snacks. And starting with a favorite is always a guarantee for success.

Disneyland Cheese stick

Disneyland Cheese stick

For our latest Snack Hack, we’re heading straight into Disney California Adventure.

In order to accomplish this level of Disney snacking expertise, you’ll need to visit two spots. But just as it was with our Churro Sundae Hack, timing is everything. So order your visits wisely by starting at Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta. Did you know that you can get a side of Marinara Sauce there for free? Pick one up!

Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta

LA's First Official Cat Cafe Is Opening This Fall

by Crystal Coser
Kristen

it's happening

It'll be the purrfect place for cat and coffee lovers alike

Although there have been a series of cat cafe pop-ups over the years, cat lovers felt a little left out when LA's first permanent dog cafe opened in March. Well now fans of furry felines will have their own cuddly cafe when Crumbs & Whiskers opens this fall.

The concept comes out of Washington D.C., where a reservation to the cafe is $15 per person for 75 minutes of time, plus the cost of food and beverages. Walk-ins can score 15 minutes of kitty time for $5.50.

Taking over a former waxing shop on 7924 Melrose Avenue just one block west of Fairfax, the central location should be the perfect place to de-stress over cat cuddles and a cup of joe. Beverages and snacks will come for a yet-to-be determined local cafe.

Remodeled Victorian 'Farmhouse' in Expo Park Asks $599k

by Bianca Barragan
Kristen

this house is pretty cute

It still has its original fireplace

From the outside, this folksy little Victorian is cute as a button, but inside it's sleek and totally updated without being totally wiped of its fantastic turn-of-the-century touches, like its original fireplace. Built in 1892, the approximately 1,800-square-foot house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, all updated.

The house has nice high ceilings and, thanks to plentiful windows throughout, doesn't seem to suffer from any dark, dreary corners. The backyard's large, if a little uninspired, but at least there's space to work with on the 6,751-square-foot lot. This pink and white Victorian's listed at $599,000.

No Charges Filed In Property Brothers Bar Fight

by Enty
Kristen

But what of the Listed Sisters?

“Property Brothers” star Jonathan Scott has narrowly avoided charges from an April 24 bar fight in Fargo City, North Dakota, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

The Fargo city attorney said Tuesday that no charges will be filed due to a lack of evidence.

“Upon review of the police report and associated evidence, I found there was not sufficient evidence to establish a violation of either simple assault or disorderly conduct…beyond a reasonable doubt,” City Attorney Erik Johnson said.

According to Johnson, the April incident occurred at the bar’s closing time when Scott and others became upset when their drinks were taken away. Johnson said the police report indicated Scott was escorted out of the bar by staff but reentered and had to be taken outside again.

Scott called 911 when the bouncer put Scott in a headlock which set the whole thing in motion.

Celebrate National Egg Day With a Delicious Breakfast Recipe From Trattoria al Forno at Disney’s BoardWalk

by Rachel Bshero
Kristen

cc: bill. Frittata autoshare

June 3 is National Egg Day, and to celebrate we’re sharing the recipe for a perfect breakfast dish to impress your family and friends. Trattoria al Forno has been dishing up this delicious Frittata with roasted red peppers, prosciutto, onions, potatoes, Pecorino Romano cheese and arugula—amongst other breakfast favorites—since it opened on Disney’s BoardWalk in December 2014.

Prosciutto Frittata from Trattoria al Forno at Disney’s BoardWalk

Makes 4 servings

  • 3 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ¾ cup slices prosciutto, cut into ½ inch squares (approximately 3 ounces by weight)
  • 6 tablespoons diced red pepper
  • 9 farm fresh eggs, lightly beaten with a fork
  • 2 tablespoons diced green onion
  • 3 teaspoons grated Pecorino Romano cheese

1. Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees

2. Heat oil in 10-inch nonstick, oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat until oil is hot.

3. Add prosciutto, stir continuously, cook until crisp, about 3-4 minutes.

4. Reduce heat to medium, add red peppers to the skillet, cook until softened, 2-3 minutes.

5. Remove the skillet from the burner momentarily, stir in eggs and green onion.

6. Return to burner, as eggs begin to cook, pull eggs in around the edge to allow uncooked mixture to flow to outer edges of the skillet, cook about 3 minutes until most of the egg is no longer runny.

7. Bake uncovered on the top rack of the oven till center is set, approximately 2- 5 minutes.

8. Remove from oven, sprinkle cheese on top, loosen frittata from side of skillet with spatula, slide onto plate, cut and serve.

Cook’s Notes: If desired, thick-cut bacon may be substituted for the prosciutto.

Trattoria al Forno is the perfect place to celebrate National Egg Day, with several other egg-cellent dishes—Poached eggs with fennel sausage over soft polenta; breakfast sandwiches three styles of Italian pork and eggs on mini Brioche buns; scrambled eggs with tomato, basil and hand-pulled Mozzarella; breakfast charcuterie with cured Italian meats and hard-boiled egg; Breakfast Pizza topped with a cracked egg, or two eggs served any style. There’s even an egg white, spinach and tomato omelet for kids!

Trattoria al Forno serves breakfast daily from 7:30 – 11:00 a.m. Reservations can be made by visiting DisneyWorld.com/dine or by calling 407-WDW-DINE.

LA's Best Ramen Shop, Tsujita, Opening Branch in Glendale

by Matthew Kang
Kristen

another ramen shop in walking distance! #blessed

Arriving at the Americana at Brand

Tsujita, long regarded as one of the city's best ramen shops, is opening its original Artisan Noodle shop inside the Americana at Brand in Glendale. It's a major coup for the nearby suburb, as well as the fancy shopping mall, which already boasts Din Tai Fung and Bourbon Steak, and will shortly have Shake ShackMainland Poke, and Eggslut across the street.

The ramen shop will be placed along bustling Brand Blvd and hopes to open some time in the fall. No word on whether any elements of ANNEX, Tsujita's heavier and even more flavor packed sibling across the street on Sawtelle, will arrive in Glendale. The "original" Tsujita Artisan Noodle features just one kind of Hakata-style tonkotsu, or richly flavored pork broth ramen, plus a fishier, umami-riddled tsukemen, or dip-style, noodle. What really elevates the ramen at Tsujita is the simplicity of each type, with near-perfect broth that would stand out even in Japan, plus fresh noodles made by Sun.

While there are plenty of exciting concepts opening on the block, Tsujita might be the one that'll please the hardcore food enthusiasts. And the lines will surely commence right at opening.

The Marriage of Manus and Machina

by susie
Kristen

Long post but worth a glance if you like intricate detail

The quiet.  The minute.  The hidden.  The unsung.  These are the surprising elements of fashion that have come together in ‘Manus X Machina Fashion in an Age of Technology’, which is perhaps the most contemplative exhibition of all the “blockbuster” openings, I’ve seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.  Quiet doesn’t mean it isn’t powerful though.  In the Robert Lehman Wing galleries, reconfigured and designed by Shohei Shigematsu of OMA New York, to the celestial soundtrack of Brian Eno’s “An Ending (Ascent)”,  the fabrics, the hours, the skills of both hand (manus) and machine (machine) and the creative thinking that has gone into over 170 ensembles are laid out before you in a deliberately matter-of-fact and almost taxonomically detailed manner.

The labelling and descriptions alone in Manus x Machina deserve recognition, as the sheer amount of information defies the general currency of social media, mainstream media at large and pop culture – as in, hazy on details, decreasing depth, and short and snappy Insta-worthy moments accompanied by razz-ma-razz.   It is perhaps head curator Andrew Bolton’s way of reacting to the state of an industry, that has undergone vast post-Internet changes and is still questioning its present modus operandi.  Manus x Machina therefore opens at a particularly pertinent time, with the capability to showcase fashion, not with fancy projections, props and special effects as has been the case in previous Costume Institute exhibitions, but instead, with functional dress dummies, zero glass separating the viewer and garment, and plenty of weighty information for you to take in and marvel at.

Descriptions such as the following paragraph, which accompanies the bulbous-skirted Chanel wedding dress, opening the exhibition in the central atrium…

This ensemble, which Lagerfeld has described as “haute couture without the couture,” exemplifies the confluence of the hand (manus) and the machine (machina). Made from scuba knit, a synthetic material, the dress is hand molded, machine sewn, and hand finished. Maison Desrues (founded 1929) hand embroidered the buttons with gold, glass, and crystals, and Atelier Montex (founded 1939) hand embroidered the medallion with glass, crystals, paillettes, anthracite cannetilles, and gold leather leaf motifs. The train of scuba knit and silk satin is machine sewn and hand finished. Lagerfeld’s hand-drawn design was digitally manipulated to give it the appearance of a randomized, pixelated baroque pattern and then realized through a complex amalgam of hand and machine techniques. Atelier Lunas (founded 1993) used a heat press to transfer the rhinestones; Atelier Anne Gelbard (founded 1997) painted the gold metallic pigment by hand; and the pearls and gemstones were hand embroidered by Cécile Henri Atelier (founded 1982).”

This is the kind of detail that you barely find in brand press notes these days, let alone journalists’ write-ups on collections.  One might argue that the average person doesn’t need to know which metier house made the buttons or why a scuba knit has been hand-moulded.  It’s the sort of insight that perhaps isn’t particularly celebrated in wider media or perhaps doesn’t really matter to the end customer but for me, all of this detailed minutiae on the creation process of a garment, is an idealistically and gratifyingly archaic way of thinking of fashion.  It’s an approach that I feel will shift an industry from its frenetic breakneck speed to a slower and more thoughtful one.

As the title indicates, the point of the exhibition is to have hand and machine working seamlessly in collaboration together, creating synergy that has been present even in the earliest of haute couture dresses from when Singer sewing machines appeared.  It’s a tired cliche to look at hands and equate them to superior craftsmanship and technique and look at machines and see mass production and soulless factories.  Structured around the métiers or trades as outlined in Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert’s famed Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (Encyclopedia, or Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts, 1751–72), embroidery, featherwork, artificial flowers, pleating, lacework, leatherwork as well as toilet and pattern making each get their own dedicated sections.  And each métier in turn is examined in the progression of its respective technologies.  Bird of paradise and ostrich feathers become feather-esque fronds created out of silicone plastic and household straws.  Traditionally shaped flowers as seen at Lemarié are pitted next to toy-esque acrylic flowers and laser cut shapes.  Hand-formed Fortuny pleats evolve into Issey Miyake’s machine created Pleats Please.  You come away questioning how one technique stands up to the other aesthetically and also the general conclusion that the standalone capacity of the hand and machine, is nothing without the right creative minds behind them.

0E5A8553

0E5A8536Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une société de gens de lettres, 1758–71, vol. 1 by Denis Diderot

In the embroidery section, the great works of houses like Lesage, and the lesser known Hurel, Lanel and Montex.  Haute couture blurs into ready to wear with the pervasive presence of Sarah Burton’s pieces for Alexander McQueen (alas, consistently mistaken as Lee McQueen’s work by the general visitors that I overheard) and her metallic hand-shredded petals, embroidered with silver beads, clear crystals and feather palettes.  Ensembles and dresses are often grouped by colour and appearance to then contrast their period of origin as well as the techniques that have gone into the pieces.  Proenza Schouler’s dense astrakhan embroidery couldn’t be more different from Iris van Herpen’s alien-like rubber texture, hand sculpted with magnets.  Progress and advancement in technique over time is also a prevalent theme as sequin embroidery ranges from flat laid-out circular shapes on the Norman Norell mid-20th-century dresses to the iridescent coils of Nicolas Ghesquière’s bubble dresses from the Louis Vuitton S/S 16 collection.

A shift from the natural to the synthetic can be seen in the leatherwork section.  Once upon a time, there were many maisons that specialised in the art of plumasserie – the treating, shaping and gathering of feathers to adorn hats and frocks.  The delicate soft strands of ostrich features lifting off of a 1960s Balenciaga dress become more rigid and sculptural when contrasted with Iris van Herpen’s laser cut silicone paired with a real silicone-coated bird-head skeleton on the sleeve or RCA graduate Maiko Takeda’s halo-esque acetate fringing.

Like feathers, flowers have always been a significant part of haute couture embellishment.  The permutations of artificial flowers in fashion are probably even more varied, as designers have shifted from a flower’s organic and natural form to abstract interpretations.  The Chanel wedding dress from the A/W 05-6 haute couture collection covered in hand-shaped camellias, crafted in Lemarié, with each one taking up to ninety minutes to complete.  Taking longer to craft a flower though does not necessarily yield a superior result as Prada’s machine embroidery and and sponge-like dresses with floral appliqué demonstrates.  “For me, mixing the hand and the machine gives the best results,” says Miuccia Prada in the accompanying quote. “I don’t think the hand and the machine have any use or value on their own. What matters is the form in relationship with the idea.”

The idea of flowers takes on an extreme form in Hussein Chalayan’s “Kaikoku” floating dress from his A/W 11-2 collection where a cast fibreglass structure is painted with pearled paper and crystal “pollens”.  Via remote control, the “pollens” are released into the air through spring and swirl around the wearer.  On video, it’s a mesmerising feat of engineering.  With the presence of Chalayan and van Herpen’s work at the exhibition, we get to see the possibilities of pushing a metier to new limits, with unconventional materials and the use of circuit board technology (what come to mind for most people when they think of wearable tech).

On the lower level of the exhibition, we’re taken on a very in-depth exploration of pleating, so vast, it requires two parts.  It shows the advances made by pleating that takes it from something that was an exclusively haute couture technique, as seen in Mariano Fortuny’s gowns that had to be sent back to the workshops to have the pleats reset if they got wet or flat, progressing to American designer Mary McFadden’s patented “Marii” method of pleating synthetic charmeuse and finally arriving at Issey Miyake’s pioneering Pleats Please garments that aren’t just ready-to-wear, but ready-to-go with its heat-pressed wrinkle-free construction.  It also takes us back to the hand in one of the most notable examples of pleating, done by the house of Lognon (one subsidiary of the Paraffection group that I’m dying to visit!) for that sublime Dior S/S 15 collection by Raf Simons.

Pleating gets further exploration when the technique of folding fabric, is placed under a classical umbrella, from Madame Grès and Nicolas Ghesquière’s Grecian column-like pleats that mould onto the body to mathematic techniques in Junya Watanabe’s 3D geometric pieces and Nao Raviv’s distorted grid line constructions.

The one section that isn’t informed by a categorised metier is the section of Tailleur & Flou, the way most haute couture ateliers are organised into tailoring and dressmaking.  This is where the foundations of a garment are revealed and perhaps is the least “visible” of all the sections in the exhibition.  It’s where toiles are exposed – either deliberately as a design feature as in a John Galliano for Dior gown, where layers of construction and draping are revealed, or in Martin Margiela’s stockman jackets that were of course later revived by Galliano at Maison Margiela.  Canvas, the fabric of patternmaking and toileing explodes in a Comme des Garcons ensemble.  Quieter pattern cutting prowess can be seen in both hand-finished dresses like Courrèges’ sleek A-line dress as well as Prada’s nylon dress from the 90s.  Form and shape can cycle through very different guises as seen in the central display of Dior’s New Look “Bar Jacket” pitted next to a Paco Rabanne dress and the combination of the two, Hussein Chalyan’s S/S 07 mechanical dress.

Where wooly press releases fail, the exhibition excels as I could finally see the intricate layering of 3-D printed (done by Materialise, the lab responsible for most of the examples of 3D printing in the show) “quilted” polyamide that is then hand-stitched with beads by Lesage

In lace and leather work, the levels of intricacy which can be achieved by hand and more traditional jacquard patterns versus that which can be achieved by 3D printing is immediately apparent, when you compare a Victorian Irish wedding dress dripping with hand crocheted cream and Proenza Schouler’s “stone lace” created by ceramic yarn embroidery that is then dipped into acid.  The close-up details reveal a mind-boggling uniformity.  The same goes for leatherwork where hand-cutting replaced by laser cutting has yielded more precise work.

I didn’t have the time to do so but if I did, I would have gone around the exhibition again in reverse order, revisiting the garments that sparked interest.  There’s something comforting in the level of detail and as some other reviewers have noted, the “geekery” involved in this exhibition.  It’s what you crave at a time when more unsavoury aspects of the fashion industry are constantly being levied and discussed and for that, you have to congratulate Bolton for reminding you of what happens when the mind creates magic with both manus and machine.

One Of Queen Elizabeth's Granddaughters Was Surprised To Learn This About Her Grandmother

by Esther Zuckerman
Kristen

wait until they tell her she has to get a real job.

When Mia Thermopolis learned that her grandmother was actually Queen of Genovia, it was, naturally, a huge surprise. After all, she was just a normal San Francisco teen before she got the news.

While that's, of course, the plot of the movie The Princess Diaries and not, um, real life, we always assumed that such a revelation would be a bit different for the members of Britain's royal family. After all, they must grow up with knowledge of their status. Well, apparently not.

In an interview with the BBC Sophie, Countess of Wessex said that her daughter Lady Louise got a "shock to the system" when she learned her grandmother was the Queen. Sophie is married to Elizabeth II's son Prince Edward, making Lady Louise the granddaughter of Her Royal Highness. But according to Sophie, Louise only got wind of her grandmother's title when people at school brought up the subject.

"I asked her, 'Yes, how does that make you feel?' And she said, 'I don't understand,'" Sophie explained. "I don't think she had grasped that perhaps there was only one queen."

Lady Louise may have now come to grips with the fact that she is far from a normal British citizen, but at least she can take comfort in knowing that she does have something in common with the rest of us: a mother who won't hesistate to embarrass her in public.

Would You Pay $200 to Learn to Eat Like Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen? — Food News

a $200 cookbook!

With all the information about food and recipes available online, it can be a tough decision to actually buy a cookbook. Some of them are certainly worth the investment, but eventually a line needs to be drawn — and I'm curious if Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen's new cookbook falls within it. Would you be willing to lay down $200 to learn how to eat like this not-quite-Paleo, mostly vegetarian, world-famous duo?

Million-Dollar Houses Are Taking Over LA Neighborhoods

by Bianca Barragan
Kristen

I feel like a lot of this could be explained by the huge drop in home costs in 2009ish, followed by a huge inventory of foreclosed properties and now the current mini-bubble. Basically if you looked at the amount of million dollar homes in 2007 or 2008 you may have a similar amount as today.

The share of million-dollar homes in LA has doubled since 2012

Housing prices across Los Angeles are rising and way out of reach for many Angelenos, but, looking at it another way, at least there are more homes to choose from for the person whose budget is over a million dollars, right? The share of million-dollar homes in the LA metro has doubled in the last four years, shows a new report out from Trulia. In 2012, these homes made up 8 percent of LA's market; in 2016, they made up 16.3 percent. Of the 100 biggest metros in the country, LA's rise in pricey homes put it in fifth place, behind three Bay Area metros and Orange County.

Looking at Ventura, Orange, and LA counties, the five neighborhoods that saw the biggest increases in million-dollar homes were all in LA County—in the South Bay, Glendale, and Central LA. (Both the Torrance neighborhoods on the list "sit on or near the border of the ocean-side town of Redondo Beach.")

  Trulia

LA neighborhoods that didn't make the top five list but still saw some of the most marked rises in their million-dollar housing stock include many whose desirability is tied to the rise of Silicon Beach. In Palms, for instance, the share rose from 7.6 percent in 2012 to 40.5 percent in 2016. Venice's share jumped from 48.7 percent in 2012 to 87 percent in 2016.

Perpetually attractive Silver Lake also saw a big jump in its million-dollar house ranks. In 2012, just 7.8 percent of Silver Lake houses were over a million dollars; now, 43.8 percent of the homes there fall into the category, according to Trulia's data.

Neighborhoods that have an established history as enclaves of the wealthy saw less dramatic increases, probably because they were already chock-full of pricey homes: in Bel Air, the share of million-dollar-plus homes rose from 82.9 percent in 2012 to 85.4 percent. In Pacific Palisades, the share rose from 80.9 percent to 85.3 percent.

Classic Afternoon Tea at Disneyland Hotel

by Rachel Bshero
Kristen

$50/person is pretty steep, I feel.

On a recent visit to Disneyland Resort, Pilar Hamil, general manager of Disneyland Hotel invited my friend and fellow Disney Parks Blog author, Erin Glover, my coworker and friend, Karen McClintock, and I to join her for Classic Afternoon Tea, a new offering at Disneyland Hotel.

You may not know this, but Pilar is a Tea Master, accredited by the International Tea Master’s Association, and she’s the only one at Disneyland Resort. Pilar’s love of tea began as a child, when her mother would serve tea and cookies for her and her siblings after school. While we were talking, we all agreed our love for tea began with taking a moment to sip some tea and spend time with loved ones. For me, it started with the ritual of after-dinner tea with my grandma and grandpa every night.

Pilar’s love for tea and attention to detail shine through in the Classic Afternoon Tea, which she developed and brought to Disneyland Hotel. The cast of Steakhouse 55 has embraced her passion for afternoon tea through training led by Pilar about the story behind each delicious tea on the menu and proper steeping techniques. The impressive tea list includes 12 varieties, including white, green, black and herbal. Aperitifs, wines by the glass, ports and cordials are also available.

Our group enjoyed the Classic Tea Party, which includes traditional scones with seasonal fruit preserves, Devonshire cream and lemon curd; tea sandwiches including cucumber and watercress, salmon gravlax, deviled cage-free egg salad, heirloom tomato and mozzarella. Desserts included chocolate covered strawberries, mini fruit tarts and assorted macarons ($50 per person). We followed Pilar’s advice and ate from the top to the bottom of the tower, starting with the lightly sweet scones, then the savory sandwiches and ending with the sweet desserts. Those with food allergies will be happy to know gluten-friendly options are also available.

For $15 more per person, you can enjoy the Premium Tea Party, which includes sparkling wine, a salad with green goddess dressing and a decadent farewell truffle in addition to everything served in the Classic Tea Party.

Young tea lovers will enjoy the Kids Tea Party, with a delicious chocolate chip scone and tea sandwiches including peanut butter and jelly, cucumber, and ham and cheese. Desserts include chocolate covered strawberries, mini fruit tarts and assorted macarons. Assorted loose-leaf teas, juices, milk and hot chocolate are included. Cost is $35 per child.

Everything about Classic Afternoon Tea at Disneyland Hotel is extremely elegant. Delicious food is served on beautiful Wedgwood china – a classic design with simple, clean lines. Classical music fills Steakhouse 55, which really takes on a bright, beautiful look during the day. It’s a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else at Disneyland Resort.

Adorable Disneyland Ducks Are Always Under Siege

Danger lurks for the waterfowl that wander the grounds of the theme park

Spring has sprung and the artificial rivers and streets of Disneyland are filled with ducklings first getting acquainted with this strange and wondrous world. The Disneyland ducks are a well-known enough feature of the park to warrant their own Instagram account, and many visitors relish the opportunity to feed the birds and observe them in their "natural" habitat. Still, as the Orange County Register reports, the Happiest Place on Earth can sometimes be a harsh environment for waterfowl.

In a dramatic showdown Tuesday, a night heron bombarded a group of ducklings that were chowing down on popcorn in Frontierland. After grabbing one of the baby ducks, it was pursued by a group of angry parents who forced the heron to release the duckling.

But herons aren't the only threats to the Disney ducks. Feral cats are known to roam the grounds at night, picking off unsuspecting birds after guests have gone home for the evening. There's also the threat of crowds, which often gather around the ducks in delight, but also have the potential to trample the small creatures. This helps to explain why Disney staff can often be seen trying to wrangle ducks off of congested walkways. It's also not clear yet how the ducks will be affected by the construction taking place on large parts of their habitat.

With all the delicious food to be scavenged, Disneyland ducks probably have it pretty good overall. Clearly though, the Rivers of America residents must still be careful not to let their guard down.

Glendale Gets Eggslut, Mainland Poke, and More as Part of New Build-Out Across From Americana

by Farley Elliott

Also Philz Coffee and Greenleaf Chopshop on a five-restaurant fast casual lineup

Looks like Shake Shack won’t be alone in their new digs across from the Americana at Brand, as a handful of other tenants were announced today. Among them: Eggslut, Mainland Poke, Philz Coffee, and Greenleaf. They're all projected to open in fall 2016.

Per some images shared by the Caruso team behind the expansion, it seems that each of the above new tenants will get their own glossy storefront space. That’s great news for Glendale and anyone who frequents the Americana, as it’s now possible to not only enjoy Shake Shack, but also grab a morning egg sandwich, sip on some Bay Area coffee, or stick around for a salad.

The build-out for all the properties is going to take some time, so don’t expect to get your Eggslut fix until later this year at the earliest. Still, good news is good news, and Glendale locals should be very, very excited.

Make an Easy Captain America Shield Sandwich

by noreply@blogger.com (Shannon Carino)
Kristen

Bill?

Ben and I got a chance to go see Captain America: Civil War on Monday as a special blogger/media sneak preview.  We both really enjoyed it and are both on #TeamCap, although I had to say #TeamIronMan so Ben could get one of each button while we were at the preview.  In honor of the movie coming out this weekend, we made a Captain America Shield Sandwich and we are showing you how to make one too!

Unlike some thematic bentos, this one doesn't require any special kitchen tools.

You'll need one small star cookie cutter and a set of nesting circle cookie cutters if you have them or several sizes of cup or jar lids if you don't.   We chose sandwich thins for our sandwich base so we already had a circle to start with, and two colors of cheese (cheddar and swiss) helped form the shield.

How to Make a Captain America Shield Sandwich:
  • Choose a circle cookie cutter slightly smaller than your sandwich round and cut one circle from a slice of cheddar cheese.
  • Using the two size down circle cookie cutter, cut the middle out of your cheddar circle, leaving a ring.  Set it aside and save your smaller circle for later.
  • Using the next two size down circle, cut a circle from the swiss cheese for the center of the shield.
  • Take your star cookie cutter and cut a star from your remaining cheddar cheese and another from the center of your swiss circle.
  • Gently lift out the swiss star and replace it with the cheddar.  Set aside.
  • Make your sandwich, using the remaining bits of cheese as filler.
  • Carefully set the shield star/circle in the center of your sandwich, using a dab of cream cheese to hold it in place.
  • Place the remaining cheddar ring around the center circle, and add a few dots of cream cheese so it stays in place too.
  • Pack up your sandwich in a sandwich box and you're done!

Are you going to see Captain America: Civil War this weekend?  Are you on #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan?

I'll be honest, I am not completely up to date on my Marvel films, so I had a few questions for Ben, but it is really an enjoyable movie!

After several of the Avengers' battles have resulted in collateral damages, the governments of many countries request a larger system of accountability for the Avengers.  This request splits the Avengers into two factions--Captain America versus Iron Man, with the rest of the Avengers choosing sides against one another.  All the while, outside forces are threatening while the internal turmoil is brewing.

Captain America: Civil War is the beginning of phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Antman makes his first appearance in an Avengers movie (we loved Antman) and a new superhero, Black Panther, is introduced to the storyline.  The next couple of years are going to feature a ton of awesome new Marvel movies, we can't wait!

Check out our #TeamCap versus #TeamIronMan bento from the other day too!
