Action Bronson BBQs in Hawaii for New MUNCHIES Video

by Jack Lowe

VICE's food channel MUNCHIES followed rapper Action Bronson out to Hawaii last December when he hit up the Pipeline Masters surfing competition and hosted a BBQ for a group of surfers out there, as well as playing a show in Honolulu. "In between all the rapping, grilling, and surfing, we made it to Kahuku Superette, the finest purveyor of poke on Oahu," says MUNCHIES. "It was a life-changing moment for Action, and its effects are still felt nine months later […] We hope you find this video as entertaining and useful as our trip was for us. Enjoy."

Oscar Grønner shows us a weird world of monolithic figures

by Alex Hawkins
Oscar-gronner-itsnicethat-list

Oscar Grønner’s illustrations introduce us to a strange cast of characters. Rendered in a naive style at odds with the more polished aesthetic of his design work, Oscar draws weighty figures in white worlds. Some pose sphinx-like in the desert whilst others gaze out to sea. The almost monolithic quality of Oscar’s childlike illustrations almost recalls the tubular style of Fernand Léger’s semi-abstract paintings. In one image two friends pore over an iPhone dwarfed in fingerless hands resembling oven mitts, and in another, a naked and neckless character slumped on a table personifies mid-afternoon malaise all too well.

Brian Finke Dives Deep Into The Biceps And Six-Packs Of Bodybuilding Competition Contestants

The world’s strongest man or woman; you may not even be close to it, but these people might be. Brooklyn based photographer Brian Finke captures an inside look into the pageants of incredibly chiseled muscle men and women of bodybuilding competitions. He not only displays the showmanship of this kind of competition, with the small bikinis and bathing suits, but also the competitors getting ready for their big moment in the spotlight. Men and women that seem to be almost bursting out of their skin with muscle parade themselves proudly for the cameras and judges in this captivating series.

Brian Finke’s photography portrays scenes of interesting happenings of everyday life. His documentary style mixed with a little bit of humor makes his work irresistible. This series of his, titled Most Muscular, can be seen on view at the School of Visual Arts Chelsea Gallery in New York City from August 22nd until September 19th. The exhibit not only features unusual characters with almost unbelievable muscle tone, but also another series of Brian Finke’s titled 2-4-6-8. This slightly offbeat series documents cheerleaders doing their routines, with a slight flavor of humor added in as well. Finke’s photography exhibits vivid colors and dramatic compositions, adding a bit of narrative to his work. Check out more of this artist’s alluring documentary style photography on his Instagram @BrianFinke.

A Rising Furniture Series By Robert Van Embricqs

by Charmaine Li

Dutch designer Robert van Embricqs created a rising furniture series, in which each piece starts with a flat surface and is capable of intricately folding itself up into an minimal design. The collection, which features mostly furniture made of bamboo caramel, includes a chair, table and fruit bowl among others. Inspired by natural forms, Van Embricqs' work predominantly explores the extent to which objects can dictate their own design.

Essence

by Theresa Christine Johnson

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This design for Essence, a cosmetics and perfume company in the United Kingdom, recognizes the beauty in everyone’s differences. Its colorful branding and packaging seems inspired by tie dye but with a sophisticated and dreamy twist.

Because the coloring of Essence takes center stage, other elements are left to be a little more simple. Products are packaged in regular boxes and the typeface is a modern sans serif. Although it does not embody the crisp white and clean look we often associate with minimalism, The Bold Studio strives to keep the brand uncluttered to make a clear statement.

Essence’s packaging and marketing materials are treated like a canvas, and the array of colors reflect the different cosmetics Essence customers can apply to their skin. The design looks like a gorgeous watercolor painting or even the aurora borealis in the night sky — undeniably beautiful, but that beauty is slightly different to each person. This gives Essence the ability to appeal to a wider audience, allowing them to find what attracts them most and to discover their own beauty in the branding.

Grégory Chatonsky Creates An Endless Mountain Range Of Kim Kardashian’s Face That Critiques Meaninglessness In Social Media

by Hayley Evans

Grégory Chatonsky, Perfect Skin II — Digital artGrégory Chatonsky, Perfect Skin II — Digital artGrégory Chatonsky, Perfect Skin II — Digital art

The psychological effects of social media—seductive vortexes that they are—are well discussed. Every day, we are saturated with idealized bodies and enviable lifestyles—unreasonable standards of happiness and fulfillment that are based purely on constructed images. Seeking to criticize this culture of obsession and apparent emptiness, French artist Grégory Chatonsky has created a bizarre amalgam of Kim Kardashian’s face featuring more than 51,000 photos of her tagged on Instagram. Using a software program he designed using Unity3d, images of Kim K’s face are pulled and generated into a sea of amassed and distorted flesh. The effect is overwhelming and somewhat nauseating; facial features sink, expand, liquefy, and solidify like crushed and melted Barbie dolls. Chatonsky has literally transformed the celebrity’s face into an endless, empty landscape.

This project comes at a funny time, with Kim K’s book of never-before-seen photos, entitled Selfish, hitting the shelves last May. Chatonsky’s choice of her face is rooted in a blunt criticism, as he views her image as the benchmark of meaninglessness in the self-serving application of social media: “She has no talent, she has nothing exceptional, she is none other than our own design, that is to say the way she [is] represented to us,” he told The Creator’s Project. “It is simply an extended skin, everything is on the surface. There is nothing to look behind” (Source). Terrifyingly, the digital collage continues to grow and morph on its own. With intensity, humor, and a heavy dose of dizzying insanity, Perfect Skin II jabs us with a postmodern critique that visually demonstrates how the image—while highly valued in our digital culture—is a flat, empty simulacrum empowered by obsession and replicated beyond meaning or logic.

Check out Chatonsky’s website to view other fascinating and speculative projects, such as a contemplation on the photograph as a desperate—but finite—imprint of our times on Earth, and the discovery of the data humans will leave behind post-apocalypse. This latter project, entitled Extinct Memories, is made in collaboration with Dominique SiroisChristophe Charles, and Jussi Parikka and will be opening at Brussel’s Interactive Media Art Laboratory in September of this year. Music Videos of the Month

by Eliza Williams

It's been a massive month in music videos, with big hitters from Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar garnering reams of views and debate. In case you've somehow missed these two, we've included them here, alongside some smaller but still perfectly formed gems that have caught our eyes these last few weeks. Enjoy.

First up is a gorgeous animation created by directing collective Bif for the track Green by Azel Phara. Production company: Mill+.

Surfing zombies are the order of the day in this beautifully shot film by ad creatives-turned directors The Sacred Egg, which is for Nicolas Godin's track Widerstehe Doch Der Sünde. Production company: Riff Raff Films.

Rihanna's Bitch Better Have My Money video by Megaforce has spawned tonnes of think pieces, and it's easy to see why. But it's also been impossible to ignore this month. Production company: Iconoclast.

Director Damian Weiler's video for Nerina Pallot's The Road could barely be more topical, as it documents life in a migrant camp in Calais. Production company: Loose Joints.

An incredible feat of organisational filmmaking, Oscar Hudson's video for Choreograph by Gilligan Moss sets the movements of a group of family members around a central figure in perfect time to the music. And it's all shot in-camera, apparently. Production company: Bad.

Director Julian Flores mixes cheerleaders and a car crash in this utterly compelling film for Acid Rain by Lorn.

Some nice use of 3D scanning in this video for Crystal by Delorean, directed by Joan Guasch.

Directed by Droga5 New York creatives Alexander Nowak and Felix Richter, this video for Paul Kalkbrenner's Feed Your Head is the third part in a trilogy for the musician that documents the trials of a naïve, music-loving kid in America. You can watch the other films here, but this latest one works well on its own too.

We close with the epic grandeur of Kendrick Lamar's Alright, directed by Colin Tilley. Just beautiful. Production company: London Alley.

The Sinan Table Expands And Contracts Into Different Sizes

by Jessica Jungbauer

Designer Ian Stell constructed the Sinan Table, which expands and constracts into different sizes. The transformable piece of furniture is made of oak slats that shift together at once. To ensure precise measurements, Stell constructed the pattern of the table on the computer first and then added brass rods for smooth movements. The table belongs to his series of kinetic furniture design.

99 Balloons, 1 Brick of Gold, 7000 Thumbtacks

by Kimi Hamada

Sikic1

Sikic3

Peruvian artist Iván Sikic addresses the growing income gap through an installation involving 99 balloons, one gilded brick, and 7000 thumbtacks. While events like Occupy Wallstreet brought the fact that 1% of the population controls the majority of the world’s wealth into the mainstream, Sikic aims to keep that conversation going. “It’s My Party and I Do What I Want To” is cheeky but it’s the kind of poking fun that draws attention to the sheer ridiculousness of that reality and what it means for the rest of the 99%. More images below.
