Canada puts its robot arm on $5 bills, leads the space currency race

Americans like to tease Canadians about their colorful (and often animal-themed) money, but we think the tables might just have turned. When the Bank of Canada issues a new $5 polymer bill this November, one side will include both the Canadarm2 and Dextre manipulator robots in tribute to the nation's work on both the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. Let that sink in for a moment: a country's currency will reference space robots alongside the usual politicians. The only thing dampening the awesomeness is the irony of it all, as it's an ode to technology in a format that's being destroyed by technology. Still, we'll consider the $5 note a victory for geeks everywhere when we're buying a box of Timbits.

A Downton Abbey Clothing Line Is Coming

by Jenna Sauers
Erin H

OMG i will have that lichtenstein china. I WILL HAVE IT.

NBC Universal, which now owns the production company behind Downton Abbey, says it plans to monetize its investment by selling a whole bunch of licensed merchandise. Think Downton Abbey apparel, Downton Abbey cosmetics, Downton Abbey homewares, Downton Abbey furniture, and even Downton Abbey wallpaper. Executive producer Gareth Neame says the goods should start hitting stores later this year, adding, "It’s very rare for a British drama to have this much retail potential and merchandizing value." • Rihanna's hairstylist, Ursula Stephen, explains how it was that Ri-ri came to have that bob:

"Everybody was frantic. They had someone close to L.A. Reid with us watching every snip. Me and Ri were like, "What the hell is she doing here?" I'm whispering to Ri, "Listen, I'm gonna cut it up to here, for now. Then tomorrow, when we're alone, I'm going to do it for real." The next day: I just went HAM — Hot-Ass Mess — with the scissors. That was the start of not just Rihanna, but Rihanna and her hair."

She was expecting two men from me and I feel I’ve been carrying big luggage on my shoulders since I was five years old. Sometimes my mother told me directly ‘Yohji, you are the only reason I live.’ It was terrifying."

Man’s Got Eyes Tattooed On His Eyelids

by Brittany High
Erin H

DEAR GOD NO

Because giving people nightmares is fun, here’s an unnamed dude with eyeballs tattooed on his eyelids. That’s right, in the photo above this man’s got his eyes closed. But they look open. *shudders* I don’t even like seeing needles, I can’t imagine having one ON MY DAMN EYES. You know, eyes? The things you see with? They’re pretty important. Just ask my grampa! He started losing his sight years ago in his old age. Now? Now any time he comments on my Facebook it looks like this:

Based on the few words he spells right, I’m usually able to figure out what he’s saying, but one thing’s for true is that they’re always mean-spirited.

Rely On Dr. Who For Help With Baby Sleep

by Brooke Dowd Sacco
Erin H

it's the melody pond bassinet! this makes me want a baby.

I’m not going to pretend to know a thing about Dr. Who beyond what I just read on Wikipedia. But I do know more than I will ever need to know about babies and sleep. For example: “sleep like a baby” is the worst statement ever, because the baby I live with has never slept soundly. Anyway, back to TARDIS and all that jazz. Little baby Andred Gallafraigh has been blessed with this creative Dr. Who-inspired crib. I can only hope, for the sake of his parents, that it gives him the nightly ability to travel into the future, you know, when he will actually understand the value of a good night’s sleep.

The Cure for Party Anxiety: Letting Go of Perfection

by Anne Postic
Erin H

i need to print this and post it up all over my house. i'm having a party in a week and a half and i'm already panicking. (y'all are coming, right?)

Do you have entertaining anxiety? I did (and I still come down with a touch of it every now and then, especially if someone important is invited). How did I get over it? It dawned on me that I had never once resented being invited to someone's home. I never wondered, "Chips and dip? BYOB? Really? That's it?" or "Wow. Look at that stain on the sofa. These people are real slobs." Nope. I'm flattered and happy to be invited to mingle with old friends and meet new ones. Huge bash or intimate soiree, four course dinner or potluck — thank you for having me! This was even more clear on my recent trip to Cange, Haiti.

4-Ingredient Peanut Chicken Ramen

Erin H

i made this for lunch today. it was about twice as much peanut sauce as necessary. tasted like 3 days worth of USDA recommended salt allowance.

Ramen noodles make me a cheerleader. No, I’m not even kidding.

I wrote you a cheer. It goes like this:

1, 2, 3, 4! It’s you who I’m here for!
4, 3, 2, 1! Might have been “whom” but I care none!
(and then the breakdown)
1 is for shredded chicken! How simple was that!
2 is for the peanut butter! Smack, smack, smack!
3 is for the soy sauce! Getting her done!
4 is for the ramen noodles! You basically just won!

That was the most horrible cheer ever ever ever. I can guarantee this ramen dish is mucho bettra. Let’s make it!

Ingredients for Peanut Chicken Ramen recipe.

Grab a couple chicken flavored ramen noodle packets. Just like in college! Also, grab some shredded chicken, some peanut butter, and soy sauce.

Mix soy sauce and peanut butter.

While you bring a pot of water to a boil, go ahead and mix the soy sauce with the peanut butter. I used crunchy, but you’re more than welcome to use whatever makes your soul fly like a baby eagle. Add a smidge of water if it needs thinning. Like my hair. (omg sorry)

Peanut butter and soy sauce mixed.

Post-whisk! Aren’t you so glad I showed you how to whisk something?

Mix noodles with sauce.

Of course once your water boils you’ll toss the ramen and the little seasoning packets in, and cook them for the 5 seconds it takes. Then drain all but a little bit of the pasta water. Add the chicken and peanut butter mixture. Toss it all together and if it needs more thinning, go ahead and stir a little saved pasta water in there. Totally optional here, but feel free to toss in some scallions for something green and gorgeous in it!

Peanut chicken ramen ready to serve.

Well hello there.

Mind if I plant my face right into you?

Watch These Clueless Kids at Coachella Lie About Liking Fake Bands

by Lindy West
Erin H

seriously, you guys. you guys. seriously.

It's Coachella o'clock! Which means, of course, that a bunch of nervous, entitled white children in macrame shirts are pooping in buckets in a desert somewhere (if one of their poops casts a shadow, then it means six more weeks of war bonnets!). And also Moby is there! It's weird!

Jimmy Kimmel & co. stopped by Coachella and asked festival-goers about all of the hottest new buzz bands. Except that all of the bands they asked about are made up. But since there's nothing more embarrassing than saying, "I don't know what that is" when someone just said the words "DJ CORNMEAL" to your actual face, all the kids lie their asses off.

It is equal parts hella mean and FUCKING AWESOME.

Nashville

by bigmama
Erin H

these little girls are amazing! sadly, you have to click through to get to the video, but it's def worth it.

nashvillenashville

I’ll tell you what has been a bright spot for me this television season.

Nashville.

I mean, yes, the plot lines tend toward a little nighttime soap opera-ish and Powers Boothe sometimes uses a phone that has a cord and Scarlett desperately needs better extensions in her hair, but the music is fantastic.

And between the music and Connie Britton’s hair? We have ourselves a winner.

I’m also a big fan of the chemistry between Deacon and Rayna James. It keeps me coming back each week to see what will happen next.

But let’s talk about the music since it’s the real star. Specifically, let’s talk about the girls that play Rayna’s daughters, Daphne and Maddie. How darling are they?

And here’s the best part that maybe everyone already knows except me until about a week ago. They are sisters in real life. Their real names are Lennon and Maisy Stella and they have their own channel on YouTube full of different performances they have done.

I love them so much. Maybe they would like to come live with me and we could travel around like The Partridge Family. Or the Von Trapps. Either one.

If you haven’t heard them yet or don’t watch Nashville, you have to watch this cover of The Lumineers song Ho Hey they did on the show a few weeks ago. It may or may not be on repeat at my house all day long.

Nashville comes on Wednesday nights on ABC. Are you watching it? Do you think Deacon and Rayna will ever end up together? And is he Maddie’s real dad? These are the questions in my head.
