Amazon is working on smart glasses to house Alexa AI, says FT

Jeffrey J. Bloom

A revolutionary NEW housing for Alexa called Google Glass.. Erm.. I mean "smart glasses" is in the works! Featuring Alexa, a home security camera & bone-conduction earbud-free audio!

So, Amazon's at a disadvantage without a mobile platform to build on, vs Google & Apple, with their millions of users & smartphones with baked-in voice AI. In related news, Alphabet Inc re-introduced Google Glass earlier this year, after discontinuing production last year.

Microsoft Extends $15000 per-Bug Bounty Program

Jeffrey J. Bloom

Microsoft's extending their bug-bounty program & increasing the minimum reward from $500 to $6,000, while the cap is still $15k for any valid Vulnerability or zero-day in MSO Insider slow build--on a fully patched Win10 desktop. Plus, Microsoft must be able to replicate it.

They're specifically looking for zero-day problems including privilege escalation through Office Protected View, macro execution which bypasses security barriers designed to block macros & remote code execution bugs, among others.

Sloppy US Spies Misused a Covert Network for Personal Shopping — and Other Stories from ...

Jeffrey J. Bloom

NSA's AIRGAP system masks online activity, allowing "non-attribution internet access." However, the ISP often funnelled ALL traffic through a single IP. In addition and in violation of policy, personal accounts were routinely used to surf the web & Shop, revealing themselves & everyone on the network. So much for "non-attrib!"

Just in! Like Computer Software, Scientists can now Programme Cells in your Body to Fight Diseases!

Jeffrey J. Bloom

“The capabilities of RNA molecules to interact in a predictable manner & with alternative conformations, has allowed us to engineer networks of molecular switches that could be made to process arbitrary orders encoded in RNA,” Jaramillo said. As well as fighting disease & injury in humans, scientists could harness this technique to control plant cells & reverse environmental & agricultural issues, making plants more resilient to disease & pests. “Throughout last year, my group has been developing methodologies to enable RNA sensing the environment, perform arithmetic computations & control gene expression without relying on proteins, which makes the system universal across all living kingdoms,”

Flathead hackers found to have history of cyber attacks

Jeffrey J. Bloom

Dark Overlord Solutions was previously banned from Twitter for releasing 600k insurance records, documents & emails from the Gorilla Glue Company & also leaked the 5th season of Orange Is The New Black, even after they were paid a $50k ransom.

Detective Scott McCormick believes Flathead schools were targeted because the hacker thought local law enforcement wouldn't have access to resources to locate the threat.

AI and Sophia Genetics could be the key to diagnosing your illness

Jeffrey J. Bloom

Sophia Genetics has made a name for itself, employed by over 300 hospitals across 53 countries & has analyzed over 125k patient genomic profiles. Promising to be "the most advanced AI for data-driven medicine," CEO & cofounder Dr. Camblong says "Sophia acts as a real disruptor by breaking down the information silos in health care.."
James Wise, a new investor, says they're "at the forefront of two rapidly changing technologies: genomic medicine & AI ... As diagnostic kits & sequencers become cheaper & more powerful, we believe that there is an opportunity to build defining software on top of these genomic technologies, just as Windows did for PCs & Android for smartphones. Sophia is already leading in this field."

Self-hack your way to brighter business future

Jeffrey J. Bloom

“My keynote is titled ‘Hacking the Corporate OS. The Art and Science of Meaningful Innovation’,” she said. “The idea is that in a ‘faster, leaner and smarter’ world, many of us already feel like we’re dragging behind, while many keep up but at a cost. Meanwhile, some already gave up and gave in to a growing movement of discontentment and nostalgia for the good old times. But scientific research shows that humans systems not only are incredibly resilient but also adaptive and innovative in a face of change. In this keynote, you will learn how the corporate OS can be hacked, rewired and upgraded to thrive in the age of acceleration. I will also lead a master class titled: “Hacking Wisdom – Intelligence 2.0 and Beyond.” This talk will be focused on the latest discoveries in the science of creativity and innovation.”

Russia's Zapad war games unnerve the West, seen by Nato as test for war

Jeffrey J. Bloom

Russia's seizure of Crimea in 2014 proved their mastery of "hybrid warfare," with cyber attacks, disinformation campaigns & use of Russian & local forces without insignia.

Codenamed Zapad or "West," NATO says the drills simulate a conflict with the US-led alliance, while demonstrating Russia's ability to quickly amass a large numbers of troops in the event of a conflict. However, western officials are concerned these drills might be used as a "Trojan horse" to make incursions into Poland & Russian-speaking Baltic regions.

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Your Doctor?

Jeffrey J. Bloom

"It will no longer be a question of whether a physician should be using AI, but whether it is ethical if a doctor doesn’t." University of Adelaide researchers are developing a "deep learning" AI that could radically change early diagnosis of serious illness. By scouring reams of medical data, it's able to identify subtle patterns--missed by human reviewers--, predict outcomes & develop very effective treatment plans. Better yet, it learns as it goes, essentially becoming more intelligent.

Quantum computer tackles its first triatomic

Jeffrey J. Bloom

Conventional computers cannot model quantum systems exactly, instead they use approximations to derive molecular properties from quantum rules. Qubits in Quantum computers can embody the actual quantum correlations without crudely breaking them down into single-electron wavefunctions. Unfortunately, the technique is currently limited to simple systems, due to the immense difficulty of keeping qubits in coherent states for long enough to perform a calculations.

IBM Researchers used 6 of 7 qubits on a quantum computer to calculate ground-state energies of lithium hydride & beryllium hydride (Nature 2017, DOI: 10.1038/nature23879). They achieved this advance by using a processor with more qubits than in previous quantum chemistry studies & by optimizing a previously developed algorithm to reduce the number of qubits & quantum operations needed to simulate larger molecules.

A Global Brain?

Jeffrey J. Bloom

When Skynet & the Borg have a baby.. "Imagine a future where, instead of looking to your network, documents & emails to find the best expert in business law, you could communicate with a chatbot that would quickly respond to your request." An omniscient virtual assistant would simplify work. Have a meeting to organize? The AI could connect automatically to Julie, who will select dates that go hand in hand with all agendas involved. The day of the meeting, the universal assistant can call on the help of Astro to create a reminder email for meeting participants. The assistant would also be able to reserve a room & tell all participants where to go when they arrive at reception. If a participant is unable to make the meeting & must telecommute, the global brain will opt for a meeting room equipped with videoconferencing. What if a participant mentions a study on an important topic? The assistant will automatically find the study & send it to all participants. At the end of the meeting, it will call the elevator & wish participants a nice day. A once complex meeting would become child’s play with these new innovations.

Today, artificial intelligence excels in accomplishing specific tasks. Even still, tech giants dream of virtual assistants capable of doing everything by ...
