Equifax CEO delivers mea culpa as cyber hacking scandal intensifies

Jeffrey J. Bloom

"We're devoting extraordinary resources to make sure this kind of incident doesn’t happen again. [Making] changes & [strengthening] defenses against cybercrimes. We will make sure every consumer who wants protection has a full package of services," Equifax discovered the breach on July 29, 2017, but it didn't publically disclose the information until Sept. 7, 2017. "Understandably, many people are questioning why it took six weeks to report the incident to the public," Smith wrote, "At the time, we thought the intrusion was limited."

Intel Cuts Cord On Its Current Cord-Cutting WiGig Products

by msmash
Jeffrey J. Bloom

The wireless cards and antennas will officially end shipping on December 29, but the technology hasn't been completely eliminated from Intel's plans. The chip giant will pivot WiGig towards VR headsets, as its speeds and low latency may find a more suitable niche cutting wires in virtual reality hardware. Intel has already demonstrated WiGig in an HTC Vive headset at Computex a few months ago, and competitors are testing similar wireless technologies on rival headsets.

An anonymous reader shares a ZDNet report, which also has some clarification from Intel: It looks like you can add WiGig wireless docking to Intel's dustbin (along with IoT products axed earlier this summer), as the company has discontinued existing products using the 802.11ad wireless standard, according to Anandtech. [Since publishing this report, we've received a statement from Intel clarifying its WiGig support: "We continue to offer current versions of our 802.11ad products, such as the Intel Tri-band Wireless AC 18265 and Gigabit Wireless 10101R antenna module. We remain committed to WiGig and think it has exciting potential for a number of applications, including enabling VR to become wireless, mesh networking and as part of Intel's leading products for 5G."] WiGig was developed several years ago with faster speeds than then-current Wi-Fi standards, but because it relied on the 60GHz channel, its high throughput could only travel over short distances. As a result, it eventually became marketed as a feature for wireless laptop docking stations, and while it received some support from enterprise laptop manufactures like Dell and Lenovo, the technology didn't make a big dent against standard wired laptop docks.

Wal-Mart Stores is teaming up with Google to enter the nascent voice-shopping market, currently dominated by Amazon.com, adding another front to Wal-Mart's battle with the online megastore. From a report: Google, which makes the Android software used to run most of the world's smartphones, will offer hundreds of thousands of Walmart items on its voice-controlled Google Assistant platform from late September, Walmart's head of e-commerce, Marc Lore, wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. Lore, who joined the world's largest retailer after it bought his e-commerce company Jet.com, said Wal-Mart would offer a wider selection than any retailer on the platform. Amazon, whose voice-controlled aide Alexa allows users to shop from the retailer, has the lion's share of the U.S. voice-controlled device industry, with its Echo devices accounting for 72.2 percent of the market in 2016, far ahead of the Google Home gadget's 22 percent, according to research firm eMarketer.

Abstract

Because of the great breakthroughs of self-healing materials in the past decade, endowing devices with self-healing ability has emerged as a particularly promising route to effectively enhance the device durability and functionality. This article summarizes recent advances in self-healing materials developed for energy harvesting and storage devices (e.g., nanogenerators, solar cells, supercapacitors, and lithium-ion batteries) over the past decade. This review first introduces the main self-healing mechanisms among different materials including insulators, electrical conductors, semiconductors, and ionic conductors. Then, the basic concepts, fabrication techniques, and healing performances of the newly developed self-healing energy harvesting (nanogenerators and solar cells) and storage (supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries) devices are described in detail. Finally, the existing challenges and promising solutions of self-healing materials and devices are discussed.
