Я продолжаю публиковать рассказы иностранных туристов, побывавших в России. Рубрика, начатая в прошлое воскресенье, вам вроде бы понравилась. Один из читателей, Александр haydamak принимал в гостях школьного учителя из Швейцарии, по имени Саймон Жосс, а потом сам перевёл его заметки и разместил три поста в своём ЖЖ. Публикую часть впечатлений Саймона в переводе от Александра.

В 2011 году Саймон взял на год академический отпуск и отправился в путешествие по России, Монголии, Китаю, Вьетнаму и прочим странам Юго-Восточной Азии. Россия в этом списке была первой страной и самой неясной - хостелов мало, путеводители однобоки, стереотип на стереотипе.

Саймон обратился ко мне за помощью и я ему обеспечил встречу в соцлагере. Это был потрясный опыт, в том числе в том, чтобы взглянуть на Россию другими глазами, человека, который привык жить по иному и видит ее впервые. Плюс человек - мой добрый друг, и клюкву лить не станет - что на уме, то и на языке.



Итак, сперва досье - Саймон Жосс. 1982 года рождения, место рождения и жительства - город Берн, Швейцария. Род занятий: школьный учитель, начальные и средние классы. Хобби, увлечения: путешествия и металл-музыка. Является одним из авторитетнейших деятелей металл-движения Швейцарии, организатор крупнейшего в стране death metal/grindcore фестиваля. Личностные характеристики: характер нордический, твердый. Истинный ариец. Владеет немецким, английским и французским языками. Любопытен, открыт, общителен, любознателен и заразительно по детски добр.


В Бресте-Центральном была длинная остановка – рельсы в Белоруссии и России шире. Меняли колеса. Анатолий, мой попутчик, объяснил, что это оттого, что русские не хотели, чтобы немцы быстро могли продвинуться в Россию во время войны.
Здесь же ходили женщины и настойчиво предлагали много еды – Анатолий научил меня, как отказываться по русски – net ne nada.


В Москве меня встретил Алекс со своим другом на старинной русской машине. В машине не работал датчик бензина и стрелка прыгала от положения «бак пуст» в положение «бак полон» - но Алекс как-то всегда знал сколько там бензина, а также сказал, что русские часто ездят с неработающим спидометром. Но на таких странных машинах даже полиция ездит.


Автомобильное движение в России, сразу же видно, что отличается от нашего. Я бы не сел в России за руль.
Начинают движение очень резко, очень резко перестраиваются. Обгон справа тут обычное дело. Еще русские не знают, что сплошную линию разметки нельзя пересекать и пересекают даже двойную. Ездят очень быстро и не соблюдают дистанцию. Очень много аварий, я видел две-три в день! Очень много машин помятых после аварии так и продолжают ездить. Похоже что это никого не смущает, даже полицию.


Алекс живет в 25 минутах езды от вокзала, дома мы были немедленно приветствованы его кошкой. Алекс сказал. что она такая же сумасшедшая как и он сам. В России я ночевал в 10 местах, и ходил в гости - и везде жили кошки – мне кажется кошки есть в каждом русском доме. Причем везде они не могут покидать дом.


В районе живет 130 тысяч человек – столько же, сколько в во всей столице Швейцарии! А тут это просто район. Если находишься в России больше трех дней, то нужно зарегистрироваться в полиции. Я думал это можно сделать по интернету, но пришлось ехать самим и заполнять много бумаг. Когда я спросил, куда мне деть регистрацию, когда буду выезжать в Монголию, мне сказали, что она никому не нужна и я смогу ее выбросить. Непонятно – зачем ее делать, если она никому не нужна и никто ее не проверит? Зарегистрировались. Алекс сказал, что теперь КГБ знает где я.

Это так называемая "улица", где нет асфальта, несмотря на то, что здесь есть жилые дома.



Я привез в подарок раклетт, для приготовления сыра, но в России другой штекер. Пока я думал где взять адаптер – Алекс взял и просто сломал третий штекер – и все заработало!


В России очень много магазинов работает не закрываясь, круглые сутки. Это очень удобно!
Русские пьют очень много чая из больших кружек. И никто не пил при мне водки, до того, как я не попал в Сибирь. До Сибири я думал что это стереотип, и русские водки вообще не пьют.


Екатеринбург. Нас встречали Оля и Стас. Угощали тонкими, приготовленными домашним способом фаршированными макаронами - в одном утрамбованный внутрь картофель, в другой капуста. Названий улиц на английском нет, заблудился.


В Екатеринбурге есть дома из 1920-ых годов, в который квартиры производились без кухни и ванной. Во внутренних дворах имелись тогда столовые и бани. Они частично существуют и сегодня, так как это слишком дорого, дополнять квартиры ванной и кухней.

Попросили помочь наклеить плакат. Я сказал что не говорю по русски, но мне махнули рукой, что это ничего. Я не знаю что здесь написано.


Рыбаки ловили рыбу в совершенно страшной, грязной «реке». Я бы испугался есть оттуда рыбу.
Рыбак бил рыбу о землю и складывал в полиэтиленовый пакет. На мосту много замков – таким образом новобрачные скрепляют свой союз, ключ от замка выбрасывается в воду, чтобы никто не нашел. Непонятно, кто бы стал добровольно искать ключи в этой «реке»…


Когда ехали по Транссибу на каждом перроне продавали сэндвичи, плюшевые игрушки, украшения и даже люстры. Какого черта продавать люстры на перроне?! Неужели их тут кто-то покупает?


На одной из станций продавали рыбу. Как я понял здесь, в районе Barabinsk много озер.Я попробовал есть рыбу с ножом и вилкой, но у меня ничего не получилось. Мне показали, что едят эту рыбу без ножа и без вилки. Я должен был оттаскивать кожу с хвоста к голове. Мясо было очень соленое и вкусное. Имелось изрядное поле битвы с рыбой и мои руки пахли, вопреки неоднократной мойке, еще довольно долго.

Еще многие едят лапшу. Алекс говорил, что по русски она называется bomzharka


Часами я просто смотрю в окно. Бесконечно длинные леса, редко прерванные городами. Транссиб пунктуален, меня пугали опозданиями, но этого не было.


Новосибирск.
Это очень большой город и очень неуютный и грязный. Я шел вдоль реки и смотрел время от времени на рыбаков, как они закидывают удочки в коричневую жижу. Берег реки в центре города был свалкой мусора.

Оказывается это все называется "парк отдыха". Lol. Funny. На аттракционах был только единственный посетитель и все смотрели на него. Это довольно забавно.

Сюда приезжают свадьбы на лимузинах, и похоже действительно никого этот берег не смущает. В России много свадеб. Бракосочетания могут прямо-таки быть народным спортом русских. Часто женятся и разводятся.


В музее Новосибирска почему-то не дозволяется фотографировать. Ничего на английском и понять смысл экспонатов можно только отдаленно. В полуподвальном этаже была странная экспозиция сахара и банок для прохладительных напитков. Коллекция банок кока-колы у моей сестры больше, чем экспонатов во всем в этом музее.

Очень мало кто в России знает английский язык, даже на простом уровне. Немецкий язык знаком только по опыту общих знаний в Советском Союзе: "Руки высоко!", "Быстро, быстро!" и "Гитлер испорчен".

Улан-Удэ. Бурятия.
Селенгинск, основанный казаками в 1666-м году. Это самый маленький из российских городов, где я был. Вся центральная площадь была усыпана стеклом от разбитых водочных бутылок.


В стакане для зубной щетки меня ждала неожиданная находка.


На горе встретилась русская пара. Когда мужчина узнал, что я швейцарец, он предложил мне немедленно выпить водки. Он объяснял мне, что вместе с женой едет, но припрятал для себя бутылку, которую можно незаметно выпить. К счастью, он налил мне только полстакана, так как мне ещё предстояло спуститься вниз.




Очень многие чудесные места в России очень сильно замусорены. Почти весь мусор здесь - пустые бутылки из под водки.


Я никогда не видел саблезубую косулю и не знал, что такие существуют.


Настало время уезжать из России. Я ехал в Монголию, последней станцией были Наушки.


Россия - супер! Я обязательно сюда вернусь.
Русские иногда угрюмые, но очень гостеприимные и радушные.
Россия огромная, неоткрытая страна, где много чудес.

kdryer39 writes "U.S. District Court Judge Mary Lou Robinson said she will sign an order requiring the American Quarter Horse Association to begin allowing cloned animals to be placed on its registry, according to the organization. A jury last month ruled that the horse association violated anti-monopoly laws by banning cloned animals. The quarter horse association issues and maintains a pedigree registry of American quarter horses, a popular breed associated with cowboys riding on the range in the 19th and early 20th centuries."

A wildfire began spreading yesterday at 2pm in a back-country road near Banning, about 90 miles outside of Los Angeles. NBC Los Angeles reports that Silver Fire, as it was named by dispatchers, has spread to around 15 square miles, with at least 15 structures destroyed and one person treated for head-to-toe burns.

The fire is still not under control. According to the L.A. Times the fire is being driven by wind, exploding in size within just one hour of starting.

This photograph, taken last night by Reuters photographer David McNew, shows a mountaintop smoldering after being ravaged by the fire.

Nearby residents have good reason to be concerned. There have been a number of devastating wildfires nearby in 2013 — Colorado had its most destructive wildfire ever earlier in the summer, while 19 firefighters were killed in another wildfire in Arizona just a month later. This week's fire is in the same location as the 2006 Esperanza Fire — a wildfire that killed five firefighters.

Another photo from Reuters' Gene Blevins shows the imposing nature of the fire.

As of Thursday morning, the fire was reportedly 0% contained. At least 1,500 people have been evacuated, KTLA reports.

The Corona Fire Department is working hard to battle a wildfire that started Thursday about 90 miles away from Los Angeles.

The department has posted some photos of its efforts to its Facebook page, including this incredible shot of a DC-10 air tanker flying over a residential area.

The plane is commonly used to fight wildfires.

Dragonflies have an insane ability to change directions and kill prey, according to new research highlighted in a report by Natalie Angier for the New York Times.

"One research team has determined that the nervous system of a dragonfly displays an almost human capacity for selective attention, able to focus on a single prey as it flies amid a cloud of similarly fluttering insects, just as a guest at a party can attend to a friend’s words while ignoring the background chatter," the report says.

The report goes on to say that much of the scientific research happening on dragonflies is funded by the military, which sees the deadly insect as a potential breaking point for future drone technology.

In the 1970s, the CIA designed a flying robot to look like a dragonfly. It was never produced, because they had trouble with the tricky, but important flying part. 

And researchers at Georgia Tech, supported by $1 million from the Air Force, have also been working to develop dragonfly-like drones.

In the trials highlighted by the Times piece,  dragonflies killed 95% of their targets in a 30 minute period. And you thought Obama's drone program was deadly.

A string of new incidents at Fukushima show that more than two years after a tsunami crippled the nuclear facility, it remains a toxic time bomb, one that the Japanese believe plant owner TEPCO to be utterly incapable of managing. 

The Wall Street Journal's Mari Iwata reported last night that 10 workers at Fukushima received high levels of radiation exposure after being sprayed at a misting station.

That amount of contamination is five times the maximum level Tepco has set as its limit, but none of the workers appear to have inhaled radioactive particles, or reported any illness, [Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Agency] said.

TEPCO says the incident poses no threat to the surrounding area as the plant's water supply is cut off from the region's, and that the water itself did not appear to be contaminated, but that they had not yet pinpointed the source of the stray radiation.

This follows an earlier announcement that 300 tons of radioactive water are still seeping past barriers and into the Pacific every day.

According to NPR's Geoff Brumfiel, the area around the plant is already a dead zone, and the ocean is likely to dilute much of the harmful impact of the leaks.

But the revelations have shattered the already brittle notion that TEPCO  had a handle on the situation.

The FT's Jonathan Soble reported last month that it was clear TEPCO was withholding the true extent of the newly revealed leaks.

Government officials and local fishermen criticized Tokyo Electric Power on Tuesday after it admitted the existence of the leak for the first time, weeks after regulators spotted the problem and days after the utility’s own analysis confirmed it.

"The data disclosure was very slow, and that is extremely regrettable,” Toshimitsu Motegi, industry minister, told reporters.

Yoshihide Suga, the chief cabinet secretary, also said Tepco should have responded more quickly.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise given the company (as well as the government itself) faced similar charges of foot-dragging in the aftermath of the March 2011 meltdown itself.

TEPCO has effectively been neutered as a going concern by the incident. Estimates put the cost of the cleanup at $11 billion over 40 years.

But Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper blasted the idea that the company should be allowed to restart one of its nuclear reactors to raise funds:

TEPCO is planning to seek permission to restart its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture in accordance with the existing rehabilitation plan. This is an outrageous idea, given what is happening in Fukushima. It beggars belief that TEPCO is even considering it. 

An insolvent Fukushima is a problem that goes beyond corporate interests, the paper notes:

TEPCO is confronted by massive burdens that far exceed its capability. If the situation is left unattended, it could have a negative effect on the reconstruction of stricken areas and the power supply to the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Believe it or not, the situation could actually get even worse.

As in worse than the original accident itself — and possibly worse than Chernobyl.

Later this year, TEPCO will attempt to remove 1,300 highly irradiated spent fuel rod bundles weighing 400 tons of "highly irradiated spent fuel" according to Reuters.

Here's what happens if it's botched:

The operation, beginning this November at the plant's Reactor No. 4, is fraught with danger, including the possibility of a large release of radiation if a fuel assembly breaks, gets stuck or gets too close to an adjacent bundle, said Gundersen and other nuclear experts.

That could lead to a worse disaster than the March 2011 nuclear crisis at the Fukushima plant, the world's most serious since Chernobyl in 1986.

No one knows how bad it can get, but independent consultants Mycle Schneider and Antony Froggatt said recently in their World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2013: "Full release from the Unit-4 spent fuel pool, without any containment or control, could cause by far the most serious radiological disaster to date."

Somehow, those risks outweigh — or maybe simply equal — the impetus for the operation in the first place: Reactor No.4 remains highly unstable, and if another quake hits everything gets fried anyway.

So far, the death toll from the meltdown itself (as opposed to the tsunami) remains a matter of debate. A May U.N. report said no one had died or even yet fallen ill, though Slate has explained that we still don't even have a precise mortality count from Chernobyl (it's hard to distinguish between exposure-induced and naturally occurring cancer).  A Stanford study says it could ultimately lead to 1,300 cancer deaths.

But mortality is likely to be compounded by the fact that Japan released record amounts of CO2 last year after it temporarily shuttered most of its other nuclear plants (which are carbon neutral).

This thing just keeps going.

SpaceX, the private rocket company founded by Elon Musk, is doing stuff that looks like it must be done with special effects. It's just so cool.

Back in early July, the company released a video showing one of its rockets shooting up into the air, briefly stalling, and then perfectly gracefully returning to its launchpad.

But now the company has one-upped itself, going beyond a mere vertical launch.

This time SpaceX was able to launch a rocket, have it move sideways, and then have it return to its original path.

Here's the description from the company (via NPR):

On August 13th, the Falcon 9 test rig (code name Grasshopper) completed a divert test, flying to a 250m altitude with a 100m lateral maneuver before returning to the center of the pad. The test demonstrated the vehicle's ability to perform more aggressive steering maneuvers than have been attempted in previous flights.  Grasshopper is taller than a ten story building, which makes the control problem particularly challenging. Diverts like this are an important part of the trajectory in order to land the rocket precisely back at the launch site after reentering from space at hypersonic velocity.

As of today, Aug. 5, 2013, the Curiosity Mars rover has spent an whole year on the Red planet.

She's supposed to be there for two years total, investigating if ancient Mars was once habitable — a feat she actually already accomplished a few months ago.

As she touched down on Mars Aug. 5, 2012, after seven unmanned minutes spent in terror, waiting for the culmination of decades of work, a scream of excitement shook the Curiosity rover's control room.

"Touchdown confirmed, we are safe on Mars," engineer Allen Chen said over the radio, eliciting tears of joy and congratulatory hugs between all the blue-shirted Jet Propulsion Laboratory staff.

Curiosity is on Mars to investigate several things, including studying the climate and geology, searching for signs of life and water, and determining if the planet could ever be made habitable for humans. She was made to last for a two-year mission — and is already half way though it.

One of the most nail-biting events was the Rover's entry, descent and landing on the Red Planet — which luckily went off perfectly. See the video below to relive it or experience it for the first time.

This image taken during the descent by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured the rover while she was falling to the surface. You can see the parachute slowing her descent in this stunning image.

The rover's own cameras caught the landing from her point of view. The video starts with the heat shield (which protected Curiosity while she was falling through the atmosphere) detaching, and ends with the sky crane blowing up dust and the rover touching down on Mars.

Since the advent of personal computers, the name of the game has been miniaturization.

How small can we shrink down transistors? How many of those transistors can we cram onto a computer chip? This is one of the main strategies in making our computers faster and more powerful.

But we're quickly approaching an inconvenient plateau – very soon, the idea of shrinking down computer parts just won't be possible and won't make any sense. When an electronic component is just a few atoms wide, how do you improve on that?

We recently spent a week in Moscow surrounded by some of the world's brightest scientific minds to learn all about quantum technology – what it is, where it's heading, and how it can make our lives better. The International Conference on Quantum Technologies, sponsored by the Russian Quantum Center, saw professors, theorists, and physicists of all stripes come together to present their ideas to each other. The results were astounding.

"We're running out of ways to make computers faster and quantum technology is clearly the next step," Professor Vladimir Shalaev told Business Insider.

"Quantum technology" is a blanket term for technology that makes use of the weirdness of the quantum world to accomplish tasks. Some classic examples of this "weirdness" are most readily found in electrons, which are part of essentially every atom in the universe. They can move forwards and backwards in time, exist in two places at once, and can even teleport by way of a process called quantum tunneling.

This smacks of magic, but it's very real, having been confirmed by countless experiments over the past hundred years or so. Quantum mechanics, for all its quirks and idiosyncrasies, is one of the most tested and verified theories in physics.

In practical terms, quantum weirdness is already laying the foundation for unbreakable codes, computers that can crunch numbers at an unbelievable rate, and super-speedy database searches. We asked Sergeui Beloussov, serial entrepreneur and senior partner of VC fund Runa Capital, what it would take to get the average person to care about this stuff.

"The average person shouldn't care about quantum technology!" he said. "Do you care how your microwave works, or do you just care that it works?" He's a proponent of quantum technology that disappears into the background of whatever device you're using, leaving you free to enjoy its capabilities without worrying about the complicated math and physics that make it work.

Beloussov seems most intrigued by how quantum technology can change hardware companies. He used MRI design as an example: "If you've ever been in an MRI, you know it's not fun. It's noisy and you have to lay perfectly still for a long time. There's no reason for MRIs to suck like this. We could use quantum technology like an atomic magnetometer to shrink down the components of an MRI machine until they're so small and affordable that there's one in every doctor's office."

Perhaps the sexiest application of quantum technology is in computing. A quantum computer is one that uses quantum bits, called qubits, instead of standard bits to interact with information. Where the bits in your Mac or PC can only represent a one or a zero, a quantum computer's qubits can represent a one, zero, or a one and zero at the same time. This enables the computer to perform many calculations at once, significantly reducing the time required to solve a problem.

A computer that can carry out multiple operations at a time represents a great leap forward. Suddenly artificial intelligence can be a little less artificial. Huge numbers can be factored nearly instantly, an important development for code-breaking and Internet security.

There's an obvious and slightly cliched question to be asked here – when will we have quantum computers on our desktops?

"I don't think people need their own quantum computers," said Beloussov. "Not everyone needs their own power generator. They're expensive and complicated. I imagine we will be interacting with quantum computers over our mobile devices in the future."

It might not always be clear where quantum technologies will find their most pertinent applications, but scientists are staunch advocates that they should be fervently investigated.

Nobel laureate Wolfgang Ketterle put it this way during a conference panel: "People in the entertainment industry didn't discover lasers for DVDs and BluRays. That was the work of scientists. Dentists didn't discover X-rays for improved medical imaging. That was the work of scientists."

Harvard professor Misha Lukin told us that "not only should scientists be allowed to investigate technologies that might not have an obvious application, they should be encouraged to do so. Improved clocks are an important part of driverless cars. Improved sensors make it easier to find cancer. When you build a bridge to an uninhabited island, people move there, build houses, and start an economy. We're building these bridges."

It's obvious that quantum technology will radically transform a number of fields from medicine to cryptography to others that we haven't even anticipated yet. The only question: will you be ready for it?

One year ago today, millions of people held their breath as we waited word on whether or not NASA had successfully landed another rover on Mars. Unlike earlier probes, this one had a lot of publicity going in, with the crazy Rube Goldberg landing sequence immortalized in a video called “Seven Minutes of Terror”.

On August 6, 2012, at 05:17 UTC—just after midnight Eastern US time, but August 5 to the west—that one-ton, nuclear-powered, laser-eyed rolling contraption gently touched the Martian dust, marking the end of a nine-month journey over hundreds of million of kilometers, and the beginning of one much shorter, but no less dramatic: The quest to explore the surface of Mars.

To mark the anniversary, NASA and JPL released this video showing a year in the life of Curiosity, a series of images taken through its front HAZCAM. You can watch as the rover moves around, uses its drill, and shows us what it’s like to be on another world.

I was debating what to write for this moment, and realized I’ve already written so much it’s probably easier just to point you to those earlier words. Below are a few posts I’ve written over the course of the year, pointing out interesting images, videos, news, and science from Mars. It’s hard to believe it’s been a year, but then, a lot can happen in that time. Curiosity’s been busy, and will continue to be until the end of its nominal mission in another year. I expect the mission will get extended; it’s a lot cheaper now to continue the voyage than it was to initiate it.

And there is a whole lot left to learn on Mars. It’s another planet, another world, and we’ve seen only a tiny portion of it.

The NASA JPL site has an archive of all the news press releases they’ve put out, and it’s well worth your time reading them. We’ve learned a lot about the area of Mars in which Curiosity is rolling, but up until now most of the news has been about the rover itself. As time goes on, the science will flow faster, and our mysterious next-door neighbor will become one of our closest and best-known friends.

Например: виюдха Geforce256, 122мм осколочно-фугасный снаряд к пушке гаубице д-25т, гантели, сноуборд и т.д. Всякие гаджеты и книжки я даже не упоминаю, это норма )

Но сегодня я превзошёл самого себя!

Я сплю с новым бампером для своей машинки, так как его больше не куда положить ))
