What Madness Does Marvel Have In Store For Squirrel Girl?

by Rob Bricken

What Madness Does Marvel Have In Store For Squirrel Girl?

Here's the deal: Marvel has just registered a trademark on the ridiculous, fan-favorite superheroine Squirrel Girl. As Bleeding Cool rightly points out, Marvel usually only bothers to do officially register a character when a movie, TV show, videogame or cartoon featuring said character is on the way. So what the hell is up?

If you go down there is a Rose of Versailles sketch.

We all know the punchlines about manga artists like Kentaro Miura and Yoshihiro Togashi becoming addicted to games. For a while, Otome Yōkai Zakuro creator and Penguimdrum character design Lily Hoshino was heavily into the KanKolle browser game. She'd Tweet about the ship daughters she recruited and post sketches. Now, with Idolm@ster SideM, a spin-off of the idol franchise with male characters, relaunched and running, that's evidently what she's into.

Here's Why Comic Con 2014 Was Actually Great For Comics

by David Brothers

Here's Why Comic Con 2014 Was Actually Great For Comics

Is San Diego Comic Con still for comics? For years, people have bemoaned the fact that SDCC is increasingly about movies and TV, and now comics retailers are giving up. Yesterday, we listed comics as one of the "losers" of Comic-Con, but veteran journalist and Image Comics staffer David Brothers disagrees. Here's why.

"Death Note" Artist Takeshi Obata Heads to New York Comic Con

by Joseph Luster
Alainmendez

I have to say I am a little miffed that NYCC has a better guest than Otakon.

Then again Otakon does not like manga guests so ...

The latest addition to this year's New York Comic Con is a big one, with Death Note artist Takeshi Obata joining in on panels and autograph sessions on Thursday and Friday during the convention. Obata will be appearing at the con with the support of Viz Media and the Japan Foundation.

— New York Comic Con (@NY_Comic_Con) July 29, 2014

In addition to drawing Death Note alongside the writing of his frequent collaborator Tsugumi Ohba, Obata is also known for his work on Hikaru no Go, Bakuman., and most recently the manga adaptation of All You Need is Kill

New York Comic Con will be held October 9-12 at the Javits Center in New York City, and Obata's autographing and panels are set to take place on October 9 and 10. The artist will also participate in a special signing outside the Javits Center as part of NYCC's Super Week, with more information on events to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Wonder Festival 2015 Winter date set for February 8

by Brian Szabelski

In news that should shock absolutely no one (because they do this every year), the Wonder Festival Project Office have announced the date for Wonder Festival 2015 Winter on their website. As always, it'll be the second Sunday in February (right around my birthday), which this time is February 8, 2015.

Unless we hear otherwise (and I have no reason to believe it'll change), WonFes 2015 Winter will return to Makurhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, for another day-long celebration of all things Japanese collectibles.

VIDEO: Grail Wars Head to American West in "Fate/strange fake"

by Scott Green
Alainmendez

I will point of Ryohgo Narita's involvement with this is worth noting if nothing else.

Along with Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel anime and Fate/grand order smartphone game news, this weekend's Fate Project presentation announced plans for print series based on Fate/strange fake, the 2008 elaborate April Fool's joke from TYPE-MOON and writer Ryohgo Narita (Baccano, Durarara).

Narita and artist Shizuki Morii will be back for planned Fate/strange fake novels and manga, coming simultaneously from TYPE-MOON books and Dengeki Bunko.

The TYPE-MOON wiki describes the premise:

The plot centers around a Grail War faultily copied from the Third Holy Grail War in Fuyuki. After the end of the third Grail War, an organization from the United States that has magi separate from the London based Mage Association as members took data from Fuyuki's Grail War and planned their own ritual. After seventy years, they used the city Snowfield as the Sacred Land for their own Grail War. They were unable to successfully copy every aspect of the ritual, which lead to it acting only as an imitation that has lost the Saber class and allowed for the summoning of strange Servants due to the definition of a "hero" being blurred.

The Mage's Association has sent Rohngall and his pupil, Faldeus, to investigate the city and the status of the war. Faldeus, a spy from the US organization, has Rohngall sniped upon arrival, despite knowing that Rohngall was simply a puppet. He announces that their Holy Grail War has been in development and that it is real, which causes an uproar at the Clock Tower, and wishes to "advertise" the project to the Association.

Wonder Festival 2014 Summer: Kotobukiya announces ARTFX J Cardcaptor Sakura

by Martin Siggers

Those of you who've followed the blog will know of my near continuous requests for scale Cardcaptor Sakura figures. Well, good news has come out of Wonder Festival - it's finally happening!

Surprisingly, though, they won't be coming from Good Smile Company, who we thought had the licence sewn up. Instead, a placard in the Kotobukiya booth announced that they'll be adding both the titular Sakura Kinomoto and long-time friend/rival Syaoran Li to their ARTFX J range. The announcement is accompanied by CLAMP illustrations, suggesting that Koto may be styling the characters more after their manga incarnations than their anime ones.

Needless to say I'm totally thrilled by this. Kotobukiya have turned out some incredible figures in the ARTFX J range recently, so outstanding quality is practically a given. I'm really happy to see Syaoran announced alongside Sakura too - he's such a key character and it's always great to see more boys in the figure world. We've not got any details beyond a 2015 release date, but we'll be certain to pounce on anything the moment it comes out.

Kodansha Announces "Let's Dance a Waltz" and "Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches"

by Scott Green
Alainmendez

Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches! Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches!

I also heard A Silent Voice was picked up as well.

Manga publisher Kodansha Comics announced today at San Diego Comic-Con that it would add two new series to its 2015 slate: the hit shonen series Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches, and a moving tale of ballroom dance, Let’s Dance a Waltz.

Kodansha descrbes the series

Miki Yoshikawa’s Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches is one of the most popular series on Crunchyroll. Class troublemaker Ryu Yamada is already having a bad day when he stumbles down a staircase along with star student Urara Shiraishi. When he wakes up, he realizes they have switched bodies—and that Ryu has the power to trade places with anyone with only a kiss! Plus, it turns out he’s not the only kid at school with a few magic tricks up his sleeve… Yoshikawa used to be an assistant on Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail.

Natsumi Ando, author of the fan-favorite Kitchen Princess, returns with a charming tale of what it feels like when you just can’t fit in with Let’s Dance a Waltz. When Hime Makimura was young, her mother told her that she could be like a princess someday. Now that Hime is in middle school, overweight and unpopular, life is a cruel disappointment. Tango Minami is a popular high school boy who hides his job as a ballroom dance instructor to maintain his image. But when Tango’s mom urges Tango to take Hime as a student, everything gets turned upside down! Will Tango’s classmate find out about his embarrassing job?!  And will Hime find the self-confidence needed to be like a princess on the ballroom floor?!
