Fate's Rin Tohsaka gets an RAH figure

by Tianxiao Ma

I'm not the biggest fan of the Fate franchise, but Rin has a nice enough design where I've generally liked the figures that get made of her. Medicom Toy is jumping on that bandwagon with this RAH version, which should be a treat for Rin fans.

She'll have a selection of expressions from a neutral smile, a combat expression, and an embarrassed one. She'll also come with her weapons and two outfits! I'll have to say, she looks rather Harry Potter-esque in her uniform and glasses. If you prefer a more casual look, her usual red sweater and skirt are available - along with the ever-important zettai ryouiki of course.

So if this sounds good to you, you can put in a pre-order for ¥23,600. She'll be out in July 2015.

"Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer" Gets Blu-ray Release in January 2015

by Mikikazu Komatsu

Toho has announced the long-awaited Blu-ray disc of Mamoru Oshii's 1984 anime film Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer will be finally released in Japan on January 21, 2015. The news was once announced for a March 2009 release in the end of 2008, but it was mysteriously cancelled (not postponed) due to "various reasons." The hardcore Oshii fans are hoping that it will not happen again.

Beautiful Dreamer, written/directed by Oshii, was released in Japan on February 11, 1984, as the second anime feature film based on Rumiko Takahashi's best-selling comedy manga series. It was Oshii's third film following the original feature edition of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (co-directed with Masami Annou in 1982, but never had a theatrical release) and Urusei Yatsura: Only You in 1983.

While making a decent box office success, the film was highly critically acclaimed by many critics who

had not been interested in anime films before, as well as Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the

Wind released in the same year. On the other hand, the original manga creator Rumiko Takahashi, who

loved the first film, received Beautiful Dreamer negatively, because it was too different from her original

world and Oshii added his own philosophical taste too much. Still, it is considered as one of Oshii's best

anime films.

New "Macross" Anime Series Given Working Title

by Scott Green

The three pillars of the Macross franchise are transforming war jets, a love triangle and singing idols. Looking to fill that final element for the next Macross anime, being provisionally called  Macross Δ, a diva audition is launching in December. Plans to open the process starting December 1st were announced following yesterday's Fire Bomber 2014 Live concert celebrating Macross 7's 20th anniversary.

A similar "Victor Vocal & Voice Audition" selected Megumi Nakajima to play Macross F's Ranka Lee.

The new Macross series was announced in March following the end of the latest Japanese TV rebroadcast of 2008's Macross Frontier. In July, co-creator, mecha designer and later director Shoji Kawamori said that the series was in its planning stages.

figma blog shows off Cardcaptor Sakura prototype

by Martin Siggers

As I've noted several times before, I'm a huge Cardcaptor Sakura fan and the series's recent return to the front lines of the anime toy world has filled me with unmitigated glee. We've known for a while now that Max Factory would be producing a figma version of heroine Sakura Kinomoto, but a new post on the official company blog gives us a first chance to get a good look at her.

Still in unpainted prototype form, Sakura is nonetheless already looking extremely sharp. Like her Nendoroid and trading figure counterparts, she's portrayed in probably the most iconic of her many outfits, an ultra frilly pink number from the first opening. It's pretty challenging to reproduce in small scale, but Max Factory look to have done a fine job, and they promise an innovative new bit of design will make sure she retains maximum posability despite all those ruffles. There's also a glimpse of the included accessories, which seem to pretty much match the Nendoroid. We get miniature Kero and Sakura's sealing wand in both regular and 'Fly' broomstick-style forms.

I can't lie, I'm very excited. I swore off of figmas quite a while ago, but I doubt I'll be able to resist this one. Here's hoping we get more details, and some coloured shots, very soon.

FEATURE: "Persona 4 Arena Ultimax" Review

by Nate Ming

I'm a big fan of the Shin Megami Tensei series, and by extension the Persona series. I'm also a big fan of fighting games, so it's only natural that I really enjoyed Persona 4 Arena, a less execution-heavy airdasher/anime fighter with pretty direct correlations to Guilty Gear XX. In addition to providing a solid, fierce and fun fighting experience, P4A also had a wealth of single-player content for everybody who forgets why fighting games exist in the first place. The P4A series continues (possibly concludes?) with Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, adding a handful of great new characters, "Shadow" versions of the cast, extending the story mode, and a variety of new features and modes along with the expected balance changes and move updates. Much like Ultra Street Fighter IV, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax looks pretty similar to its predecessor on the surface, but the changes come to light once you actually start playing.

1

Ultimax's new cast comes in several tiers: there's the new fighters from the arcade, with Persona 3's Yukari Takeba and Junpei Iori joined by pun-loving new villain Sho Minazuki. Console-exclusive Rise Kujikawa only kinda quits her announcing gig to join the fight, along with all-grown-up-since-P3 Ken Amada (with Koromaru in tow). Creepy detective Tohru Adachi, Velvet Room denizen Margaret, and Persona 4 Golden newbie Marie join the roster as DLC. It's a lot of new characters, but they all play fresh and interesting, to an extent. Yukari is a frustrating ranged character, connected and whiffed strikes with Junpei's bat build to a power-up if he gets enough "home runs," and the Persona-less Sho Minazuki fights with raw physical talent and constant up-close harassment.

2

Unfortunately, some characters don't feel as mechanically developed. Rise's too Persona-reliant, Marie's too meter-reliant, Amada's too dog-reliant, Adachi's... well, f**k Adachi and his ridiculous broken status effect bullshit [Editor's note: this is a good thing]. Despite fun and game-changing abilities like Marie's weather system and the dual-character control of Amada and Koromaru bringing something new to the fight, most of the console-exclusive and DLC characters just don't feel as fleshed-out as other, more established members of the game's roster.

3

The big addition Ultimax brings to the roster is Shadow characters, alternate versions of most of the cast. On the surface, playing Shadow seems like a handicap, as you do less damage and don't have access to the get-out-of-jail-free card that is Burst. Instead of Burst, you can activate Shadow Frenzy, briefly granting you unlimited meter. Are you good at Roman Cancels One More! Cancels? Great! You'll be able to do hilarious neverending combos and shave off like 75% of your opponent's bar in one go! This could have just been a simple palette swap with new voice samples, but Shadow characters have their own strengths and weaknesses, really bringing something fresh to the game.

Arcade Mode, Score Attack, and Versus are joined by Golden Arena Mode, offering RPG-like progression with four equippable stat boosters (think Pokemon) and Social Link with support characters who provide various buffs. On lower difficulties, I didn't see any reason to upgrade any stat aside from Luck (increase the amount of EXP earned), but higher difficulties require you to min-max as much as possible. The standard Training Mode (excellent for the genre) is still complemented by the very smartly-designed Lesson Mode, teaching basic fighting game mentality and theory in addition to just showing how to perform moves. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax wants you to get better at it, but even if you want to just cruise through the whole thing with autocombos and enjoy the characters and world of Persona (which is totally fine), there's still something for you.

story

Story Mode is handled differently from P4A, for the better. Instead of choosing one character and working your way through their story (and dealing with repeat dialogue from intersecting storylines), the story is a large, branching plot that regularly switches perspectives between characters, opening up more paths as you continue. It's important to mention that there's no Japanese voiceover for Story Mode cutscenes (or menus, or between-fight announcements), but P4's dub is stellar, so I was okay with this--your mileage may vary. For someone (like, say, me) who wants to actually play the game, it can get kind of frustrating to sit around for a half an hour of dialogue before playing a match that lasts less than two minutes, but this is still Persona, meaning it's already the cream of the modern JRPG crop.

Depending on which console you've purchased the game for, you'll get a different experience. Xbox 360 players get the same basic menu-style lobbies and smooth online as the previous game. PS3 players, on the other hand, get cool arcade-style lobbies that let you walk around, spectate matches, say you've got next, and have a nice, nostalgic look back at the old arcade culture. Of course, you also can't go and play Time Crisis while you wait for a match to free up, but nothing's perfect.

last

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is a great follow-up to a great game. Fans of the story get more, fans of the game itself get more than that. It kinda kills me that the mystery of Labrys and the P-1 tournament is over, but with the upcoming release of Persona 5, who know's what's coming next? Atlus and Arc System Works score another win with a game that may not be as demanding as other fighters, but is every bit as rewarding.

REVIEW ROUNDUP

+ Plentiful roster additions don't feel like padding, with fresh, individual playstyles

+ The game wants you to get better at it, and provides training tools and lessons for improvement

+ While still more blah-blah than play, Story Mode is vastly improved from the original P4A

+ Online is great on both consoles, with a more unique overall experience on PS3

+/- Japanese voice options are only available in matches--not in Story Mode, in menus, or anywhere else in-game... but the English dub is awesome!

- Console-exclusive and DLC characters don't feel as developed as more established fighters

Kunihiko Ikuhara Discusses "Yuri Kuma Arashi" Anime

by Scott Green

This weekend's Machi Asobi anime event welcomed Kunihiko Ikuhara (Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Penguindrum), along with cosplaying publicist Yumioka Masako, to discuss one of winter 2015's most intriguing anime, Yuri Kuma Arashi.

Cast on the TV anime features Miho Arakawa as Ginko Yurishiro, Yoshiko Ikuta as Ruru Yurigazaki and Nozomi Yamane as Kureha Tsubaki. Kunihiko Ikuhara is working with animator Etsuko Sumimoto adapting manga tie-in author Akiko Morishima's original character designs on the Silver Link production.

幾原邦彦監督の最新作「ユリ熊嵐」情報が「ユリ★アソビ」で明らかに - GIGAZINE http://t.co/4vvyipge4l

— 幾原邦彦 (@ikuni_noise) October 12, 2014

Sounds like the Yuri Kuma Arashi anime is going to be essentially a separate entity from the manga, which is basically in Morishima's hands.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Ikuhara said it's partly b/c what he's writing would be hard to do as a manga and partly so he can take inspiration from what she's writing.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

He also said that since he's new to this, he asked some girls about the fanservice, and they said it was acceptable, so he's going with it.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Arakawa Miho was picked to voice Yurishiro Ginko by audition, and not only b/c she was in Penguindrum.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Yurigasaki Ruru has big boobs b/c when Ikuhara learned about oppai mousepads, he was fascinated & decided he wanted one of smth he created.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Some more tidbits from the Yuri Kuma Arashi article: Ikuhara got the idea while working on Penguindrum. Bears weren't there at first...

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

...just the concept that he wanted to do something in a genre he'd never done before. He was also interested in working w/ Morishima Akiko.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Q: "What is a 'Yuri Kuma Arashi'?" A: "You know what yuri is--not the flower. Kuma is the literal animal (bears). Yuri meets bears, which...

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

...causes a storm (arashi). You may be thinking that yuri goes with yuri and bears with bears--that they can't possibly mix...

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

...but this is going to be something you've never seen anything like before."

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Q: "Why bears?" A: "Because they're in (lol)" However, when he decided on it, he didn't expect the bear craze to get as huge as it's gotten.

— 黒坂龍子 (@BlackDragonHunt) October 12, 2014

Ikuhara also strongly insists Yuri Kuma Arashi could be a turning point for the genre--much like Gundam spearheaded the "real robot" genre.
