Production I.G to Adapt "Joker Game" World War II Mystery Novel as TV Anime

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

Looks like it could very interesting.

Production I.G is gearing up to launch a site for a TV anime adaptation Koji Yanagi's Mystery Writers of Japan Award and Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for New Writers award winning World War II mystery novel Joker Game. Kazuya Nomura (the 2015 Ghost in the Shell anime movie, the Sengoku Basara anime movie) is back at the studio to direct with Shirow Miwa (the manga Dogs, work with the band Supercell) providing original character designs.

Books From Japan describes the novel

A fictitious spy-training organization established within the Japanese army on the eve of World War II is the centerpiece of this set of linked short stories. The D Agency comes into being in autumn 1937 as an independent army unit formed under the private initiative of Lieutenant Colonel Yuki. As rumor has it, Yuki was once a brilliant agent himself who ferreted out multiple secrets in enemy territory until he was betrayed by an ally; he was caught and tortured before he managed to escape, which explains why he has no left hand and always walks holding a cane with his left foot dragging behind him. Dubbed "the Lord of Darkness," Yuki teaches according to principles that flatly challenge established army wisdom. He bans military dress and behavior and instead drills his protégés to become unseen apparitions; according to him, the unwritten army code that a captured soldier should kill either the enemy or himself is the epitome of stupidity and the worst possible choice a spy can make. For his training course Yuki rejects Army Academy graduates and instead picks candidates from far and wide, producing a dozen crack spies expert not only in multiple languages but also in such skills as disguise and lockpicking. Under false identities, these agents go their solitary ways to fulfill daring missions in Tokyo, Yokohama, Shanghai and elsewhere, all the while remembering Yuki's teachings. Among the most gripping of the episodes in the book is Robinson, the tale of an agent in London named Izawa and his escape after capture by British intelligence. Like the rest of the collection, the story highlights the notion of spies as operatives who do battle not with brawn, but with brains. A sequel anthology, Daburu joka (Double Joker), was published in 2009.

Making new content is expensive, time-consuming, and risky. Many publishers have fallen back on remastering their previous games, where they only need to upscale the graphics and can rely on an existing fanbase to buy the game again. This risk averse approach to publishing has led the current generation of consoles to be dominated by remasters instead of new AAA titles. Remasters can make old games more accessible, but recently they've been focused on simply updating last gen games that many people could still easily play. But truly old titles have become so out-of-date that any remaster would require the game to be built from the ground up, as we're seeing right now with the Final Fantasy VIII remake, and cost just as much as a brand new game. Despite the trend of games being remastered, then, many classic games are actually being ignored.

Gen Urobuchi Working With Trigger?

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The latest inspiration for speculation among sharp-eyed otaku is that the Twitter account of Gen Urobuchi, known for Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass and before that Nitro+ works including Fate/zero, has recently become linked to folks from anime studio Trigger. Among the 259 associations are now the studio, as well as Panty and Stocking/Kill La Kill's Hiroyuki Imaishi and Shigeto Koyama (plus Evangelion's Khara and character designer/manga artist Yoshiyuki Sadamoto).

Speaking of Urobutcher, Blassreiter, the 2008 anime he helped write, from Gonzo, Nitro+ and the legendary Ichiro Itano (now of Shirobako fame), is getting a Blu-ray collection with 5.1 audio in January 2016.

Otakon 2015 Interview: Takamatsu Shinji

by sdshamshel

This is an interview with director Takamatsu Shinji from Otakon 2015. Takamatsu as worked on many anime including Gundam X, the Brave (Yuusha) series

First question. Most Gundam series had romance but didn’t have it as a strong focus. Gundam X is a series that put the romance at the very forefront, and it was in some ways the main focus. Why was this decision made for this series?

It’ll be a long story!

I wanted to make something that was Gundam but not Gundam. One rule of Gundam X was to get out of Gundam and to be meta about Gundam, to do things that were not like “Gundam.

Before that, about a decade prior, you worked on Z Gundam and Gundam ZZ. What was your director Tomino Yoshiyuki, and how would compare his style to yours?

Well, I did grow up watching Gundam myself, and by the time I started to work at Sunrise Mr. Tomino was in the position of being a great director, so it was a scary prospect working with Tomino.

During Z Gundam I was production management, so I reported directly to him, and I was scolded by him every single day. There were days when I was scared about everything.

Romi Park is also at this event, and she gave a similar description of Tomino that is not inaccurate compared to yours.

However, Ms. Park worked with Mr. Tomino much later than I did, and if you look at Mr. Tomino at the time of Z Gundam, he really was off the wall.

You’re also very well known for your work on the Brave series, and you worked on many of them. What was the main reason you returned to the Brave series for so many years?

The first director of the Brave series, Yatabe [Katsuyoshi], brought me onto production for the show, and I worked on a little bit of Gundam in between. So, there was a hiatus for me, but otherwise I started from beginning to end for the entire series. And I got my debut as a director from the Brave series, so I am very much fond of the Brave series.

Might Gaine was my debut as a director, so I am particularly fond of it.

In that case, I have an interesting question to follow up with.

The Brave series is known for being very toy and merchandise-heavy but also having good storytelling, as well as in some cases the staff resisting the merchandising aspects of the Brave series. Two famous examples I know are a hidden cel in Goldran which sarcastically talks about it’s supposed to be a robot that’s easy to make into toys, and how Might Gaine’s ending is a criticism of the toy industry.

What were your and the staff’s feelings at the time, and how did the toy companies such as Takara react?

That’s a very deep and vexing question!

So when I was getting started with Might Gaine, I was told that there’s just supposed to be good and bad, and all I had to do was to have toys that featured good guys and bad guys who would just battle. The staff really felt we need to show some kind of resistance, and that that wouldn’t just be the end of the show. And by staff, I mean myself.

You did not work extensively on Gaogaigar, but I have to ask this question. Do you have any details you can share as to why Project Z never got off the ground?

That I don’t know about!

That’s okay! Moving on, another similar series you worked on was Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter, which was based on an arcade game. How would you compare working on Gyrozetter vs. working on the Brave series?

Gyrozetter was based on a video game, so while the look and feel of the show may be similar to a giant robot show, production of the show was otherwise completely different.

Unlike previous shows, the robots came from video games, so it wasn’t really needed as a tangible object, and I thought we could have done more with that.

I did grow up watching toy merchandise-based shows and I did think about what if the robot were a toy, but that wasn’t reflected in the show. That would be my regret. I talked about the resistance to merchandising intent of the toy companies for your earlier question but I actually love toys.

Last question. In regards to Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!, people have talked a lot over the years about the idea of a magical boy series. Whenever anyone brings up magical girls, someone asks, what about magical girls? What was the motivation behind finally putting that into reality?

The producer pitched it to me, and I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to work on something no one’s ever done before? And it turned out to be fun. (laughs)

Thank you!

Thank you.

A passionate community has grown around speedrunning, when players try to find the fastest possible way to complete a run. Different types of speedrun may require the player to beat the entire game or allow them to take shortcuts enabled by glitches. Game developers may want to attract an audience for their game through a design that appeals to this community, but to succeed they should keep three factors in mind. First, focus on tight controls so the runner can focus on their path through the game. Second, allow them the versatility of multiple approaches, but make sure the game provides enough consistency that each performance of the same route can be executed in the same time (or close to it). Scripted enemies vs. AI that generates random responses help with that! Finally, be mindful of how patching affects the speedrunners who are learning your game: you can still patch, but try to patch in new options for the community along with your bug fixes!

Hatsune Miku Joins "Persona 4: Dancing All Night" as DLC Character

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Crypton Future Media's virtual idol Hatsune Miku is joining the cast of Atlus's Persona 4: Dancing All Night rhythm game for the PS Vita as a DLC character. The collaboration features a Miku design illustrated by Shigenori Soejima as well as the song "Heaven feat.Hatsune Miku(ATOLS Remix)".

The DLC will be available in mid-August. The DLC will be paid-content, but the price has not yet been announced. The team-up makes sense, since Atlus is now owned by Sega, the company that produces the Hatsune Miku Project Mirai and Project Diva rhythm games.

If Hatsune Miku is a technically a character in the Shin Megami Tensei universe, does that make Mikudayo her Persona?

Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro Are Still Working Together On A Project

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Are you already missing P.T. and you're mourning the loss of Silent Hills? There's some good news on the way that should satisfy you -- both Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro are planning on working on a new project together!

In an interview with IGN, Guillermo del Toro explained that the two are still going to work together, but just not on Silent Hills.

“I love working with Kojima-san. “We are still in touch. We are still friends and working into doing something together, but that’s not going to be [Silent Hills].”

So if you loved the idea of the dream team, you can still ship away. A project could very well be in the works for the future, and it might even blow Silent Hills out of the water. We'll just have to wait and see, as hard as that may be now that we've seen what they're capable of. Hopefully whatever they choose to create is just as good.

According to a 2009 survey, young animators make around 90,000 yen per month ($740), while the industry is largely located in the expensive districts of Tokyo. Following the success of last year's, a second crowdfunding campaign launched in May to help foster new generations of anime creators with the establishment of affordable dormitories. This week, the effort wrapped up having succeeded in raising $780 above its $15,000 target of funds for setting up more dormitory facilities that animators who are new to the industry can use for 30,000JPY per month (including utility expenses).

The animators who get to use the [Starting Out Animators’ Dormitory] will also get chances for social exchanges beyond the boundaries of companies, and also receive technical support for illustrations and drawing. Currently, they are supporting 2 starting out animators at the dorm. For this project, they aim to expand the dorm facility up to 2 times the current scale.
