James Recommends Freedom Planet because it offers interesting twists on the high speed platforming formula that Sonic the Hedgehog made famous on SEGA systems back in the 1990's. This retro styled indie game pays homage to its roots, with many-layered levels that force the player to choose quickly between multiple paths, but it also introduces an attack button that interrupts the flow of the action as players stop to deal with interesting and complex enemies.

Delayed "Slayers" Film/OVA Blu-ray Box Scheduled for October 30, 2015

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Japanese online retailers including Amazon Japan and Animate have listed the digitally-remastered Blu-ray box of the five anime films and two OVA series based on Hajime Kanzaka's popular light novel series in 1990s, Slayers, for a release on October 30, 2015. As reported, it was originally scheduled for February 27, 2015, but was cancelled three months before it. The reason for the cancellation was explained as "an issue on production" at the time.

This is the first time for the eight titles to get Blu-ray releases, following the DVD box in November 2006. The Blu-ray versions are newly remastered from the original 35mm negative films. The 41,040 yen (about 337 US dollars) set contains:

"Slayers Perfect" (1995 film)

"Slayers Return" (1996 film)

"Slayers Great" (1997 film)

"Slayers Gorgeous" (1998 film)

"Slayers Premium" (2001 film)

"Slayers Special" (1996 OVA: 3 episodes)

"Slayers Excellent (1998 OVA: 3 episode)

The novel's original illustrator Rui Araizumi provides its box illustration, while the anime character

designer/animation director Takahiro Yoshimatsu draws its digi-pack jackets. 68-page booklet,

newly-recorded audio commentaries by Megumi Hayashibara (Lina Inverse), Maria Kawamura (Naga

the White Serpent), Hiroshi Watanabe (the director of the anime series) and Takahiro Yoshimatsu,

and the original trailers/CMs are also included in the set.

___________

The Witcher: Wild Hunt distills all the best practices of hard-boiled detective novels and translates them brilliantly into a game. To understand how and why this works so well, we have to look at the origins of detective novels, going all the way back to Edward Allen Poe first showing us how feats of logic (as opposed to feats of raw strength) could be engrossing. Characters like Sherlock Holmes and authors like Agatha Christie turned that revelation into a formula, but one that often revolved around the English upper class or quaint country life with stories led by a detective who seemed outside and above it all. American detective novels like those of Raymond Chandler, whose essay in the Art of Murder could practically be a design document for the Witcher 3, broke with that tradition: they expanded the stories to not only show lower class people but humanize them, allowing the reader to learn and empathize with their stories through a detective who moves smoothly between both upper and lower classes with disdain for neither. The recent war upheavals in the Witcher create a society much like that in the hard-boiled detective novels, where everything and everyone is in flux. Geralt fits perfectly into the mold of the gritty detective, a sarcastic, unflappable person who can both give and take a beating but whose honor throughout is both unquestionable and unheralded. The main storyline of the Witcher III is a thread we follow as players, but the real value of the game lies in the stories we find along the way: the human moments we discover because the game gives us so much to explore.

A group of monks declared sanctuary for two hooligans from the demes (Constantinople's fanatical chariot racing factions) who had miraculously survived a hanging. The public wanted them pardoned for their crimes, so when Justinian made his public appearance at the next chariot race, they begged him to have mercy. When Justinian refused, the crowd turned on him and became a rioting mob that tore through the streets of Constantinople. During the Nika Riots, they burned down neighborhoods and even the Hagia Sophia cathedral, rampaging until Justinian agreed to pardon the two men from the demes. Now, however, the mob would not accept that. They demanded that he fire his advisors. Then they decided to appoint their own emperor, a man named Hypatius who was related to the previous emperor Anastasius. Assaulted on all sides, Justinian made plans to flee, only to be confronted by Theodora. She gave a now famous speech asking whether he would rather live a failure or die an emperor, announcing that she would choose the latter. Justinian followed her lead and made new plans to retake his city. He called Belisarius and Mundus, his best generals, to marshal a force. He also sent the eunuch Narses to bribe one faction of the demes and begin dismantling their leadership. Then he ordered his forces to invade the Hippodrome, where they cut down some thirty thousand civilians and executed the false emperor Hypatius. Justinian's reign was once again secure.

Viz Licenses "Vampire Knight" Author's "Shuriken and Pleats" and "Ouran High" Author's "Behind the Scenes"

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

At Viz Media's Shojo Beat label panel at this weekend's Anime Expo event, the North American publisher announced plans to release Vampire Knight author Matsuri Hino's 2014 ongoing Shuriken and Pleats and Ouran High author Bisco Hatori's 2014 ongoing drama club titles Behind the Scenes, aka Urakata!!

Baka Updates descibes Shuriken and Pleats.

With the Meiji Restoration and the abolishment of the Samurai system, the once feared and respected ninja were forced underground, to continue their work in absolute secrecy. In modern times, the descendants of a certain ninja clan have continued their ancestors' legacy by employing the ninja arts in their work as bodyguards for the rich and famous.

Kirio Mikage is the daughter of the CEO of "Shadow Village Company," a private security company that operates as a front for the clan's ninja activities. For as long as she can remember, her father has been training her physically and mentally to be a ninja, drilling their clan's mantra into her head: "Be a shadow." Ever since she was a child, Mikage's only source of comfort and encouragement has been her employer, James G Rod. Rod is a kind, handsome and mysterious British businessman who is using Shadow Village Company's ninjas for his personal security and who, when Mikage was only about 10 years old, requested that she be assigned to complete her apprenticeship as part of his security team. His wife, whom he loved dearly, was Japanese but she and the couple's daughter were killed by Rod's enemies prior to him hiring Shadow Village Company to see to his personal security.

Rod seems to regard Mikage as a stand-in for the daughter he lost, whereas she is half in love with him as the only person who has ever shown her kindness. One day, Rod asks Mikage to let him adopt her and send her to school in Japan like any normal teenage girl, so she can lead a happy life. Mikage is troubled by his offer because of her feelings for him and the fact that the penalty for any ninja who turns their back on the clan is death. But before she can decide, Rod is killed in a bombing. Mikage finds out after his death that, before he was killed, Rod paid Shadow Village Company a sum equal to her entire lifetime's wages in exchange for her freedom from her obligations to the clan. In honor of his memory, Mikage decides to fulfill Rod's wish for her and returns to Japan to attend high school there.

This is the story of ninja Mikage's life as a normal high school girl!

"Kodoma no Omocha" Returns to "Ribon" Magazine with One-Shot Story

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Fans of Miho Obana's classic shōjo manga, Kodomo no Omocha (Kodocha for short) are in for a treat, because the September issue of Shueisha's Ribon magazine will feature a new original Kodocha story, the first to appear in Ribon in 17 years.

Kodomo no Omocha features the adventures of a hyper-energetic child-actress named Sana as she grows up and falls in love. Kodomo no Omocha originally ran in Ribon magazine from 1994 until 1998. Tokyopop published the manga in English from 2002 to 2006, but the license has lapsed and this version is now out-of-print.

The September issue of Ribon goes on sale on August 03, 2015.

___________

Social play allows players like Emily to take on greater challenges than solo play. With the player's confidence in the game's mechanical challenges well established, the design can now push them towards social challenges. For example, the player may recognize instantly how to beat a high level raid boss, but to succeed at their plan they need to recruit other players to form the right party. Their successes naturally lead to them making friends with players they get along with, and at this point the community takes initiative into its own hands as players elect to join guilds or even step up to leadership. At the peak of social curve design, the prestige players get from coordinated play (exclusive loot, titles, and other visible bragging rights for beating the most difficult quests) becomes more of a reward than stats alone. While the designer must provide tools to make it easy for those players to coordinate with one another, they should still avoid the pitfall of making interactions automatic since that would undercut the entire cycle of social challenge and reward.
