____________

Although it finds Peter the Hermit's group from the People's Crusade in shambles, the summer of 1096 finally sees the "official" forces of the First Crusade set out for Jerusalem. This was not one army, however, but five separate armies led by men with very different motivations and sympathies - many of them surprisingly hostile towards the Pope or the Byzantine Empire. Hugh of Vermandois, brother of the King of France, led one army despite his brother having been excommunicated by Pope Urban II. Godfrey de Bouillon from the German territory had actually helped kick the Pope out of Rome and install the anti-Pope. Bohemond of Taranto brought an army whose experience primarily came from fighting the Romans twelve years prior. Raymond of Toulouse led the largest army and believed himself the main leader of the Crusade, despite the fact that he traveled with the Pope's appointed leader, Bishop Adhemar. Only Robert of Flanders could be said to be on good terms with both the Pope and the Eastern Roman Empire. When the five armies arrived in Constantinople, Emperor Alexius Comnenus approached them all privately with bribes and threats to get them to swear an oath that any land they conquered on Crusade would be returned to him. They all took it (except Bohemond's nephew, Tancred) and so the emperor sent them across the Bosphorus to attack the Turks at last.

James was going to recommend Card King: Dragon Wars last week, but a significant patch changed key aspects of the game that he originally recommended. Today, after giving an overview of a game that takes some ideas from the Pokemon CCG and adds more deck flexibility, James explores how the most recent patch caused him to change his recommendation: a focus on shorter, more mobile-friendly battle times and a shift towards pay-to-win design altered the fundamental gameplay.

"Shonen Sunday" Plans Turnover as Editor Seeks to Reinvigorate Manga Magazine

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

I would love to see Sunday rise up to the top again.

This week's issue 38 of Shonen Sunday (despite the name, out on Wednesday) is announcing big plans for the 56-year-old magazine magazine now running series like Detective Conan, Hayate the Combat Butler, RINNE, Silver Spoon and Magi. Editor-in-chief Takenori Ichihara, who took the position in July, published a letter explaining his intention to shake up the weekly.

While some familiar series may be going away, Ichihara aims to bring in both returning veterans and rookies with new series that appeal to a broad audience. Going into the fall, the magazine will also be trying out more ideas with additional one-shots.

Ichihara, who is returning to the editorial department after seven years, explains that he's looking to balance what has traditionally worked with innovation, fostering authors as the driving force behind the magazine's manga. Confident in his vision, Ichihara is promising big things from Sunday's new direction.

Like other shonen magazines, Sunday has been in decline in recent years, seeing a drop in circulation from 890,000 copies in 2008 to a projected 390,000 copies for the year as of June 2015.

New issue

Maybe a precursor of what's coming, Hayate's Kenjiro Hata's new manga, set to start concurrently running in September 2nd's issue 40.

Sentai Filmworks Licenses "Hayate the Combat Butler - Heaven is a Place on Earth"

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

I actually really liked this.

Sentai Filmworks has announced the license of Hayate the Combat Butler - Heaven is a Place on Earth. The film with a new storyline courtesy of manga author Kenjiro Hata will soon be available through select digital outlets. Dates and details for the home video release version will follow.

Sentai describes the feature

Wthe star-crossed mistress/butler couple take a trip to a secluded vacation retreat, they find themselves trapped in conflicting realities! If it’s not bad enough that Hayate finds himself in a world where Nagi seems to have never existed, Nagi’s having an even less wonderful life, trapped in a mysterious and deadly amusement park of doom!

Heading up the all-new production is director Hideto Komori, who also adapted the character designs from Hata’s originals, while the screenplay is the work of Yasuko Kobayashi (story editor/script, Attack on Titanand Witchblade). Rounding out the staff are several regular contributors to the Hayate franchise, with music provided by Wataru Maeguchi (Maid Sama!) whose connection with the series also includes Hayate the Combat Butler: Cuties and Hayate The Combat Butler: Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You, while veteran powerhouse Manglobe (Ergo Proxy, Samurai Champloo, The World God Only Knows) once again handles animation production.

Kiss Players was a real multi-media property from 2006, which was Japan's only Transformers torchbearer between of Cybertron and the live-action movie. The toyline/manga/weekly radio drama featured the Autobots teaming up with young girl who power them up with their kisses, and a girl possessed by the ghost of Starscream.

Again, this was an official Transformers product...

____________

Emicho of Leiningen and Walters sans Avoir certainly made a mark, but the largest group in the People's Crusade was led by Peter the Hermit. To gain passage through Hungary, they swore an oath not to destroy anything, but the lack of real leadership for their group became clear when they very quickly started a market brawl, stormed the local citadel, then fled to Belgrade and immediately repeated their aggression by turning on the Byzantine troops sent to keep them in line. At the city of Niŝ, the Byzantine troops pinned them down and slaughtered a quarter of the entire crusading "army." The remainder fled to Constantinople and secured passage into Turkey, but the group fractured from within and became two separate factions, with Peter leading one and a man named Reinald leading the other. Both factions competed for bragging rights, committing horrible atrocities to outdo each other. One group actually managed to siege a castle, but it had no water supply, so they were easily starved out by the Turks. The Turks, however, spread a rumor that this group had actually gone on to capture the capitol city, and the remaining crusaders set out to join what they thought would be a loot extravaganza. Instead, they ran into a Turkish ambush that left only 3,000 of their 20,000 soldiers alive. Now led by Geoffrey Burel, they retreated to Constantinople.

VIDEO: "Joker Game" Anime Previewed

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Another upcoming anime being previewed ahead of hype at this weekend's Comiket is the Production I.G TV anime adaptation of Koji Yanagi's Mystery Writers of Japan Award and Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for New Writers award-winning World War II mystery novel Joker Game. Kazuya Nomura (the 2015 Ghost in the Shell anime movie, the Sengoku Basara anime movie) is back at the studio to direct with Shirow Miwa (the manga Dogs, work with the band Supercell) providing original character designs.

Books From Japan describes the novel

A fictitious spy-training organization established within the Japanese army on the eve of World War II is the centerpiece of this set of linked short stories. The D Agency comes into being in autumn 1937 as an independent army unit formed under the private initiative of Lieutenant Colonel Yuki. As rumor has it, Yuki was once a brilliant agent himself who ferreted out multiple secrets in enemy territory until he was betrayed by an ally; he was caught and tortured before he managed to escape, which explains why he has no left hand and always walks holding a cane with his left foot dragging behind him. Dubbed "the Lord of Darkness," Yuki teaches according to principles that flatly challenge established army wisdom. He bans military dress and behavior and instead drills his protégés to become unseen apparitions; according to him, the unwritten army code that a captured soldier should kill either the enemy or himself is the epitome of stupidity and the worst possible choice a spy can make. For his training course Yuki rejects Army Academy graduates and instead picks candidates from far and wide, producing a dozen crack spies expert not only in multiple languages but also in such skills as disguise and lockpicking. Under false identities, these agents go their solitary ways to fulfill daring missions in Tokyo, Yokohama, Shanghai and elsewhere, all the while remembering Yuki's teachings. Among the most gripping of the episodes in the book is Robinson, the tale of an agent in London named Izawa and his escape after capture by British intelligence. Like the rest of the collection, the story highlights the notion of spies as operatives who do battle not with brawn, but with brains. A sequel anthology, Daburu joka (Double Joker), was published in 2009.

Production I.G Attached to New "Legend of Galactic Heroes" Anime

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Yoshiki Tanaka's Legend of the Galactic Heroes, telling a sci-fi war based on 19th century Prussian conflicts, inspired a huge body of anime between 1988 and 2000, including 110 OVA episodes and 52 side-story OVA episodes. In February 2014, after a decade and a half, a new anime project was announced during the opening of stage production Legend of the Galactic Heroes Chapter IV: After the Clash. Now, the project site has been updated with news that Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass) is attached to the anime, planned for 2017.

This summer, Viz's Haikasoru label announced plans to publish Yoshiki Tanaka's novels and Sentai Filmworks announced the license of the earlier cult anime.

I don't think I have ever heard anyone really liking the Turn A movies.

Both titles will be released November 3, 2015 and are available for pre-order today.

About Mobile Suit Gundam Part 1 Bluray

Universal Century 0079. The rebel space colonies of the Principality of Zeon launch a war of independence against the Earth Federation, using humanoid fighting vehicles called mobile suits to overwhelm the Federation Forces and conquer half of Earth's surface. Months later, the Federation has finally developed its own prototype mobile suits at a remote space colony. But when the colony suffers a Zeon surprise attack, these new weapons fall into the hands of a motley crew of civilians and cadets, and fate places a youth named Amuro Ray at the controls of the white mobile suit Gundam...

About Turn A Gundam Movies DVD

This movie collection contains the Turn A Gundam movies "EARTH LIGHT" and "MOON BUTTERFLY".

For 2000 years, a separate race of humanity has lived on the moon. Known as "the Moonrace," their technology is leaps and bounds beyond those that stayed behind on the Earth's surface. Now seeking to return to their original home, the Moonrace send three teenagers, Loran, Keith, and Fran, down to Earth on a reconnaissance mission to test the viability of its environment.

After spending a year on Earth, Loran has become good friends with Sochie and Kihel, daughters of the prestigious Heim family, and he looks forward to fully integrating into Earth society. But before Loran gets the chance to make his report, the Moonrace launch a surprise attack. Earth's primitive airplanes are no match for the superior power of the Moonrace's mobile suits. However, in the midst of the initial attack, Loran and Sochie uncover a long-forgotten relic: a white mobile suit. As a Moonrace, Loran is quickly able to grasp the basics of piloting it, but by doing so, he inadvertently places himself in the middle of a war.

Spoken Languages: Japanese, English subtitles.

How Many Curtains Does It Take to Get to the Truth of Anime Production?

by sdshamshel

One of the recurring endeavors in the study of anime and manga has been to remove some of the aura from Tezuka Osamu. Rightfully one of the most influential figures in anime and (especially) manga history, it’s not so much about questioning whether Tezuka had any impact on Japanese popular culture but to what extent the attributions given to him (either by others or himself) are necessarily accurate. Did he really create the first anime (no) or the first TV anime (no)? Did he really invent shoujo manga (the answer is also no)? However, amidst the pursuit of the truth, this brings to mind the question of how much one is willing to peel back the veils of illusion that go into the production of art and media, to look at the creators themselves, and perhaps to take away even their brilliance in favor of treating them and their works as mere people and products.

What inspired this post was the book Anime: A History by Jonathan Clements, which aims to study anime as objects, created and sold, and in doing so reveal a side of anime’s history that isn’t merely about lauding the successes or pointing out obscure, overlooked works. As much as one might argue that this is removing the “magic” from anime, there’s nothing wrong with this approach, especially if one is in pursuit of a more factual type of truth. In fact, it’s not so much that the veneer of fantasy has been peeled away from the anime or the creators that has me writing this post, but rather about the degree to which another might accuse me of doing the same thing through this blog.

One of the aims of Ogiue Maniax from the very beginning has been to get people to think more about anime and manga, to explore why one might love anime in a certain way. To this extent, I’ll talk about different themes in series but I’ll also bring up both creators and audience in a mix of modernism vs. postmodernism that I don’t necessarily think needs to be resolved. I’ll go to panels at Otakon and lament the lack of audience for Maruyama Masao, who is one of the greatest troves of anime production knowledge in existence (though maybe now that he’s been parodied in Shirobako this might change things) and question why people pay so little attention to the creators. And yet, is that so different from what Clements does in his book?

While Clements strips away the aura from the creative process a bit in order to question the self-congratulatory aspects of creators and studios, am I stripping away the fantasy of the anime as a story in and of itself, the narrative as entity that wishes for people to engage it on some level as inherently real? Do even the people who follow voice actors do this same thing in their own way? And perhaps most importantly, should these contrasting stances all be considered under the same umbrella of “fandom,” or are they distinct enough to need more specific categories?

___________

World War 2 games like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield flooded the market during the 1990's and continued to dominate the first person shooter genre for years to come. Players grew fatigued with the sheer number of them, however, especially since it seemed that many replayed the same battles over and over again in new game engines. But in their rush to recreate the most famous moments of WW2 for the Western World, they left huge, important, and very game-worthy parts of the war unexplored. It was called a World War for a reason, yet many fronts of WW2 in Africa or Asia have never been covered in a game. Developers could also focus on a specific battle rather than trying to cover the entire experience, allowing players to experience the highs and lows of a single, fierce struggle. They could also change the gameplay from traditional run 'n gun shooter to styles that have worked for games like Far Cry or Red Dead Redemption, focusing on raiding parties or freedom fighters. And finally, they can make the world outside the battle feel more real by engaging with real themes of the war - far too many WW2 games have simply ignored the Holocaust and acted as though the war took place in a cultural vacuum.
