I would so do that!

"Fate / stay night Riddle-Solving Rally - Hunt for the Grimoire" - a puzzle-solving event that kicked off in Tokyo in July of this year and then later continued in Kobe in August - is coming soon to the cities of Tokushima and Kokura.

Participants take the role of apprentice mages tasked by Rin Tōsaka with solving an incident involving a mysterious gas leak. Each player receives a puzzle kit as part of the game, and solving the clues within directs the players to special checkpoints. Completing the challenge earns the player 1 of 6 clear file posters (randomly selected) as a prize.

The event runs from October 10 to October 12, 2015, at the Tokushima venue and from November 28 to November 29, 2015, at the Kokura venue. Entry in the event requires the purchase of the puzzle kit, which sells for 1000 yen ($8.34 US) including tax. For more information, check out the official Japanese event page here.

Shueisha's "Weekly Young Jump" Publishes New "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" Manga

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Ryu Fujisaki, the author of Shiki and Hōshin Engi, is helming a new manga adaptation based on the Legend of the Galactic Heroes novels by Yoshiki Tanaka. The new series will debut in Issue 45 of Weekly Young Jump, a seinen manga magazine published by Shueisha, which will be released on October 08, 2015.

The Legend of the Galactic Heroes novels, which began publication in 1982, are a galaxy-spanning space opera science fiction series chronicling the conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance as well as the rivalry between Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, two genius military-tacticians who rise to power on either side.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has been adapted into 3 animated feature films, 2 long-running OAV series directed by Noboru Ishiguro, 3 previous manga adaptations by Katsumi Michihara, and a musical stage play by the Takarazuka Revue. Production I.G is currently developing a new Legend of the Galactic Heroes animation slated for release in 2017.

Viz Media is currently planning to release the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes novels in English, whereas Sentai Filmworks has licensed the anime.

Netflix Pages for "Glitter Force" and "The Seven Deadly Sins" Spotted Online

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Intrepid fans have spotted entries for Glitter Force and The Seven Deadly Sins on Netflix's U.S. and Japan launch pages, respectively.

The Glitter Force entry (http://www.netflix.com/title/80057968) lists the series as being published in 2016 and describes it as follows: "Five preteen girls learn they're a legendary superhero squad known as the Glitter Force. Their mission? To defend Earth from evil fairytale villains."

As Crunchyroll previously reported, Glitter Force is the English-language title for Saban's adaptation of Smile PreCure!, a magical girl TV anime from 2012 animated by Toei. The entry page does not currently link to any videos for the series.

The entry of The Seven Deadly Sins is region-locked to Netflix Japan (http://www.netflix.com/jp-en/title/80050063), but a fan took this screenshot. The splash-page feature a description in English that reads: "When a kingdom is taken over by tyrants, the deposed princess begins a quest to find a disbanded group of evil knights to help take back her realm."

No official announcements regarding either of these series have been released yet, but hopefully the discovery of these entry pages means that good news will be on the way soon for English-speaking anime fans with Netflix accounts. We'll be sure to report on any future developments.

___________

To understand the debates over frame rate that pop up over so many new game releases, we have to start with an understanding of what frame rate means and does. All moving video is really composed of a sequence of still images, or frames. The rate at which we change those frames determines how smooth the motion looks. In film, the standard frame rate is 24fps, but that's actually a slow rate which creates effects like motion blur that our brains have been trained to recognize as cinematic. Video games aim for a minimum of 30fps, however, because the interactivity means that a slower frame rate can make the game feel laggy. While developers sometimes hit a higher framerate, we usually only hear 30fps and 60fps discussed because our TV and computer monitors refresh in intervals of 30, although we can turn off vertical sync (vsync) to get somewhat closer to the refresh rates pumped out by our graphics cards. So why do developers sometimes cap frame rate at 30fps? Sometimes it's contractual - they're prohibited from making a PC version definitively better than its console equivalent - and sometimes it's bad architecture - a game that's programmed to check something every frame becomes more laggy the more frames there are. But in the end, to achieve a higher framerate, developers have to trade off other aspects of the game's performance, and every industry study shows that better graphics trump better framerate when it comes to sales.

AnimEigo Teases "Riding Bean" Announcement for Anime Weekend Atlanta 2015

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

AnimEigo, a North Carolina-based company that distributes anime and live-action Japanese films, recently teased an announcement related to one of their licenses:

Going to be spilling all sorts of Beans at the AnimEigo #awacon panel, Sat@6:30pm http://t.co/pS2TzwhG4h

— Robert Woodhead (@AnimEigo) September 20, 2015

It seems pretty clear from the capitalization that AnimEigo founder Robert Woodhead is referring to one of the company's licenses: the 1989 OAV Riding Bean, which is based on a manga by Kenichi Sonoda.

Riding Bean follows the misadventures of Bean Bandit, aka the Road Buster, a nearly superhumanly tough courier with a suped-up car and a penchant for bulletproof clothing. Bean finds himself framed for kidnapping when a package he's hired to transport turns out to be the heiress to a wealthy family, and mayhem ensues.

AnimEigo has previously released Riding Bean on VHS and DVD, so it's likely the new announcement will involve a Bluray release of Riding Bean, possibly spear-headed by a crowdfunding campaign similar to the ones done for Bubblegum Crisis and Otaku no Video. We'll have to wait for news of the panel at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2015 for confirmation.

Anime Weekend Atlanta 2015 is an anime convention in Atlanta, Georgia, that runs from September 24 to September 27, 2015, at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly and Sheraton Suites hotels and the Cobb Galleria convention center. For more information about the convention, check out the official home page here.

"Pacific Rim 2" Production Reportedly Halted Indefinitely

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

While surveying the state of Pacific Rim production company Legendary Pictures, distributor Warner Bros., and Universal following Universal Pictures' decision last week to let Legendary Pictures take its Kong: Skull Island project to Warner Bros. in the midst of a five-year production deal, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that sources are telling them that production on Pacific Rim 2 has been halted indefinitely.

Pacific Rim 2 had been scheduled for April 7, 2017, but if it happens at all, it'd now likely be delayed.

HR notes thay Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro's Pacific Rim, which was made under its earlier Warners deal after the first grossed $411 worlwide, but the cost of a sequel make it risky. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China.
