____________

Yi's life has been turned into a Confucian parable: a highly competent person who bore betrayal stoically and stayed loyal to the king. Since there was no record of his early life, that pattern is reflected in the way his early life is described. That pattern of thinking clearly influenced the historians who did cover Yi's life, but while it stands out as unusual to those of us who aren't familiar with that tradition, it has a subconscious impact on the people who were raised with Confucian thinking and wrote this history from it. If we looked at Western history from a foreign perspective, we would likely notice similar patterns being overlaid onto Western ways of telling history as well.

The Nintendo PlayStation Is Real, And It Actually Works

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

I mostly shared this so I remember to send it to Daniel.

A long time ago, both Nintendo and PlayStation formed a partnership that was very quickly dissolved. The partnership resulted in the Nintendo PlayStation, a special prototype that combined the creations of both camps into one console. For a while it was considered a myth, until one was discovered. It was thought to be fake for some time, but it actually exists, and what's more, it's functional!

Engadget recently tried out the prototype and took some very interesting video footage, which you can see below. The prototype itself came from father and son owners Terry and Dan Diebol. Terry Diebold ended up with the prototype after winning it at a bankruptcy auction where former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Olaf Olafsson was previously employed.

Check out the footage to see the prototype in action. What do you think of a Nintendo and PlayStation hybrid console? What if that were possible today? That'd be absolutely crazy.

"Magi" Manga Kicks Off Final Story

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The 2015 issue 48 of Shounen Sunday, out in Japan October 28th (despite the name, out on Wednesday), is introducing some change-ups for the manga magazine. GTO author Toru Fujisawa's 2014 Oishii Kamishama (Delicious God-chama) and Hikaru Nikaidou's 2014 Heavens Runner Akira are ending. And, perhaps biggest of all, Shinobu Ohtaka's 2009 anime-adapted Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic kicks off its final storyline in the issue.

Ootani Akira (Gundam - Far East Japan) will be launching new sports manga Nippen! in the next issue.

Not explicitly related to Magi wrapping up, this August, Shonen Sunday announced big plans for the 56-year-old magazine with editor-in-chief Takenori Ichihara, who took the position in July, publishing a letter explaining his intention to shake up the weekly.

Ichihara explained that while familiar series may be going away, he aims to bring in both returning veterans and rookies with new series that appeal to a broad audience. He further promised that, going into the fall, the magazine would also also be trying out more ideas with additional one-shots.

Plans have been announced to adapt Ohtaka Shinobu and Yoshifumi Ohtera's ongoing Magi prequel/spin-off Adventure of Sinbad. Miyao Yoshikazu, who previously helmed OVA adaptations, returns for the upcoming AOS Project production, scheduled to air on the latenight Animeism broadcast in April 2016.

Volume 27 was released October 16th, along with volume 8 of the Sinbad spin-off

___________

Horror settings fall into two basic categories: places of disempowerment and places of isolation. Places of disempowerment - such as alien worlds and the bottom of the sea - force us into situations where we don't understand the rules of our environment, and can never tell when our expectations will be suddenly reversed. Places of isolation, like remote cabins and arctic research stations, make sure we know that no one will help us: if we can't find a way to survive, we will simply die. The inherent terror in these settings can be amplified by giving them a haunted past, such an ancient graveyard or an abandoned asylum, or by making the place itself possessed of malice and willpower that's directed against those inside it. Finally, these settings can provide psychological landscapes that reflect someone's inner struggles and fears directly back onto them.
