"Full Metal Panic!" Bones Rumors Prove False

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

It looks like the new anime that Eureka 7's Tomoki Kyoda is developing won't be Full Metal Panic!, or at least won't be revealed to be FMP this week. After rumors circulated earlier in the week that the January issue of Dragon Magazine, out November 20th, would announce the project information, along with a second season of Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, Kyoda denied knowing about the Bones production. And, in fact, the magazine hit stands without the rumored scoop.

Without providing details about the format or specific content, light novel imprint Fujimi Fantasia Bunko announced plans for a new anime adaptation of Shoji Gatoh's mecha military action/high school rom-com Full Metal Panic! at a weekend Akihabara fan event in October.

John Snow's single case study was not enough to convince the medical community that cholera was spread through the water, but he did not give up. He founded the Epidemiological Society of London in 1850, the first organization dedicated to studying not just cures for disease, but also their causes. And so when cholera returned in 1854, John Snow saw a chance to finally prove his theory and set about studying the patterns of disease. The disease appeared to strike randomly, both rich and poor, but he realized that in his district were two different water companies, one of which he theorized might be contaminated. Finding evidence proved more difficult than he anticipated: going to door to door, he was often met by people who didn't even know what water company supplied their building. He tracked down landlords and even developed a water test to help him identify which water source each house had, but before he had the time to compile and analyze his findings, another terrible outbreak struck in Broad Street.

Digimon Adventure Tri key

It's been six years since that summer adventure when Taichi Yagami and the rest of the DigiDestined crossed over to the Digital World. And nearly three years have passed since the final battle between Hikari Yagami's group and BelialVamdemon. As the peaceful days passed by, at some point the gate to the Digital World closed. Not even the DigiDestined know what caused this, and time alone continues to pass.

On one such day, a Kuwagamon suddenly appears in Odaiba. Its rampage leaves the town in ruins, and the people there in turmoil. Taichi happens to catch sight of the Kuwagamon, and he chases after it all by himself in an effort to halt its rampage. But there's nothing he can do against a Kuwagamon. It's no use... Translator Discusses "Wandering Son" Manga Status

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The Fantagraphics Books North American release of Takako Shimura's Wandering Son has been critically well received, earning a 2012 nomination for the prestigious comic industry Eisner Award and The Young Adult Library Services Association's Great Graphic Novels for Teens listing. Apparently, it hasn't been doing as well commercially as scholar/translator Matt Thorn explained when asked about plans for the series following the June 2015 release of the eighth English hardcover.

The 2003-2013 manga ran for 15 volumes in Comic Beam.

@darkrad_10 Sadly, sales of the Wandering Son books have been disappointing. Lots of people express interest, but not so many buy the books!

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 8, 2015

When sales are expected to be low, per-unit prices have to be high, or you're in the red. That's a universal law of capitalism...

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

...but you can't justify high prices w/o high production values and high quality. That's why publishers first print in hardcover.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

Paperback editions are not feasible w/o proportionately high sales.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

Big Japanese manga publishers (Shueisha, Shogakukan, Kodansha) can sell 200-page books for 400 yen because the volume is enormous.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

But smaller Japanese manga publishers selling more obscure titles have to do the same thing we do at Fantagraphics: slick hardcover editions

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

It's a Catch 22. It's hard to generate more sales when prices are high, but prices can't be lowered until sales are high enough.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

I don't know if the unauthorized scanlation of Wandering Son is still online, but if it is, it bears a lot of the blame for low sales.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

It's ironic that scanlations are seen as an act of love, when they deny the artist deserved income and kill the work for English audiences.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

Scanlations don't "generate interest." They make a proper translation all but unsellable.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

Yes, some scanlation groups remove titles once they're licensed, but it's too late. Copies live on in BitTorrent forever.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

It's sadly ironic that one natural audience for Wandering Son, transgender folks, are generally poorer than cis folks.

— Matt Thorn (@matt_thorn_en) November 17, 2015

@kt_on_the_shore Wandering Son Vol. 8 is available now. We'll definitely share information about subsequent volumes as it becomes available

— Fantagraphics Books (@fantagraphics) November 5, 2015

Fantagraphics introduces the series

The fifth grade. The threshold to puberty, and the beginning of the end of childhood innocence. Shuichi Nitori and his new friend Yoshino Takatsuki have happy homes, loving families, and are well-liked by their classmates. But they share a secret that further complicates a time of life that is awkward for anyone: Shuichi is a boy who wants to be a girl, and Yoshino is a girl who wants to be a boy. Written and drawn by one of today’s most critically acclaimed creators of manga, Shimura portrays Shuishi and Yoshino’s very private journey with affection, sensitivity, gentle humor, and unmistakable flair and grace. Volume one introduces our two protagonists and the friends and family whose lives intersect with their own. Yoshino is rudely reminded of her sex by immature boys whose budding interest in girls takes clumsily cruel forms. Shuichi’s secret is discovered by Saori, a perceptive and eccentric classmate. And it is Saori who suggests that the fifth graders put on a production of The Rose of Versailles for the farewell ceremony for the sixth graders — with boys playing the roles of women, and girls playing the roles of men.

Crunchyroll Adds "Yakitate!! Japan" and "Space Pirate Mito" to Catalog

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

Yakitate!! Japan is pretty dang fun.

Crunchyroll continued its Crunchyroll Library Expansion Project on Tuesday with the addition of Yakitate!! Japan and Space Pirate Mito, both available to Crunchyroll members in the United States and Canada.

Yakitate!! Japan is currently available in its entirety to premium members, with free members able to watch the first 15 episodes at the moment.

Synopsis:

Kazuma Azuma wants to make bread. Not just any kind of bread though. He wants to make a bread that represents Japan itself and can stand toe-to-toe with rice as a national food. Thanks to his legendary “Hands of the Sun,” unnaturally warm hands that allow dough to ferment faster, Kazuma's bread is like a slice of Heaven. And when the Pantasia Rookie Competition arrives, everyone will get a taste of his skill! Along with his friend Kawachi, he’ll go up against koala karate masters, Harvard bread scientists, samurai with rolling-pin swords and more as he bakes his way to glory!

Space Pirate Mito is also live now, and it's in both subbed and dubbed form.

Synopsis:

Most teenage boys have enough trouble just dealing with the pressures of school and dating, but 15-year-old Aoi Mitsukuni's life becomes exponentially more complicated when his mom returns from a long "business trip." He discovers that not only is his beautiful mother actually an alien, but she's the notorious Space Pirate Mito to boot! To make matters worse, the girl Aoi likes at school is actually a secret Galactic Patrol agent attempting to find and arrest his mother. No one ever said being a teenager in love was easy!

Nendoroid Tomoyo, Champion of the Universe

by sdshamshel
Alainmendez

Hooray for the TRUE Tomoyo!

nendoroidtomoyo-sutekidesuwa

Daidouji Tomoyo from Cardcaptor Sakura is one of my favorite characters ever, from one of my favorite anime ever, and if you’re not a fan of Tomoyo… what’s wrong with you? Whereas normally I would hesitate to buy even some of my most beloved heroines, Nendoroid Tomoyo was a no-brainer. Upon seeing it go up for pre-order, I hit purchase and looked back with zero regrets. Sakura merchandise is common, but Tomoyo much less so, and I couldn’t let this sort of thing pass me by.

nendoroidtomoyo-sakuradistant

I don’t own a lot of Nendoroids. In fact, my first one was a Kinomoto Sakura (seen above) that I received as a birthday present. Quite smartly, my friend purchased it because he (correctly) expected that I would not hesitate to pick up Tomoyo. Thus, I don’t have a lot to compare to, and I’m extremely biased, so I’ll call this less a review and more of a celebration.

nendoroidtomoyo-closeup

Nendoroid Tomoyo is mostly based on her anime design, as opposed to the softer shoujo look of the Cardcaptor Sakura manga. However, one thing that they did bring from the manga was a hint of Tomoyo’s lavender hair; in the anime it’s more of a gray. When I think about it, rarely do figures try to replicate the look of shoujo manga, likely due to how complicated and not designed for 3-D they are. At least with anime, you can rely on more solid colors.

Tomoyo comes in a standard Tomoeda Elementary school uniform, and has a choice between a hat or a hairband, as well as smiling and ecstatic faces. I’ve gone with the hat + sparkly eyes combo for these photos in order to achieve maximum radness, but what really takes this figure over the top is the inclusion of her signature camcorder.

Remember kids, this anime was made in the early 2000s, before mobile phones could take HD-quality video. Back in her day, Tomoyo would have to walk 20 miles uphill both ways in the snow in order to film her lovely Sakura-chan and add to her massive archive of Cardcaptor Sakura footage in her private viewing room inside of her mansion, under watch by her squad of lady bodyguards.

nendoroidtomoyo-withsakura

It’s supposed to have a swing-out screen, but a small missing part makes it impossible to attach. I’m not sure if it was defective or if I had simply lost it while taking it out, that’s how tiny the connecting piece. The other flaw is that the giant head is rather unwieldy, especially with the hat, and sometimes moving it around can cause Tomoyo’s noggin to fall off.

Overall, it’s a fine addition to the collection, and when I think about it, I am fortunate that the characters I like tend not to get a ton of merchandise. That’s what I would say…if I didn’t get into Love Live. That’s for next time.

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Along with this is the rumor that the magazine will announce a second season of anime based on Fumiaki Maruto's Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, coming in fall 2016.

Without providing details about the format or specific content, light novel imprint Fujimi Fantasia Bunko announced plans for a new anime adaptation of Shoji Gatoh's mecha military action/high school rom-com Full Metal Panic! at a weekend Akihabara fan event in October.

The series was previously adapted into a 2002 Gonzo anime, then 2005 Kyoto Animation follow-up with a 2003 Fumoffu comedy in between.

4 Men Arrested for Posting "One Piece" Latest Chapter Before Release

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested four men on suspicion of copyright infringement on November 13. One is a 69-year-old Japanese employee at a delivery company and other three are Chinese including one 27-year-old exchange student in Tokyo. The suspects are accused of posting Japanese manga episodes on a manga pirate website before their official release day in Japan.

According to the police's anti-cyber crime division, the Japanese worker stole a copy of the 49th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump while delivering them from a printing factory to another delivery company, and gave it to the exchange student at a parking lot. Then other two Chinese scanned the latest chapter of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece and uploaded it onto the pirate manga website "mangapanda" on October 29, four day before the issue's official release day. The website has posted over 4,000 manga titles illegally, and its server is located in Turkey. While the Chinese exchange student already admitted, other three have denied the charge.

As we reported the previous arrest in October 2013, posting magazine pages and articles on the net

without the publisher's permission before (of course even after) its official release day is illegal and crime.

Shueisha estimates the total financial damage caused by manga pirate sites in the past five years was

about 6.5 billion yen (53 million US dollars).

Alainmendez

It is so easy to merely share misinformation because you want to be the person who tells everyone first.

coelasquid:

HOW TO FACT-CHECK ON TUMBLR

A few notes:

  • Do this for every informative/news-related post you want to reblog. The fewer reblogs a false report gets, the less it spreads.
  • The best thing you can do for a false report is not reblog it at all, OR start your own post to debunk it, with a link to the original. If you reblog to debunk it, your reply will get lost in the huge amount of notes, and you will just end up spreading the misinformation further.
  • Sometimes a totally unlikely story turns out to be true! It’s even more fun to reblog it when you’ve confirmed that it’s real.

We all slip up sometimes but hey do what you can folks. Only you can prevent Tumblr fires.
