"Jojolion" Featured In Latest "Ultra Jump" Commercial

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

For the last four years, manga magazine Ultra Jump has been running a series of animated Jojo's Bizarre Adventure commercials, staying a couple parts ahead of the anime. It now looks like Part 7 Steel Ball Run, about an 1890 alt-history horse race across the US, is being skipped in favor of Part 8, JoJolion

Begun in 2012, JoJolion returns to Morioh, a town in S-City, M-Prefecture (basically author Hirohiko Araki's hometown of Sendai, Miyagi prefecture), now devastated by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami (also an alternate version). If you can succinctly summarize the premise beyond that, congratulations! 'Cause it's rather wild.

The ad promotes the May issue (out April 19) of the magazine's bonus Rohan Kishibe Manga Creator Kit, help on creating manga from the Diamond Is Unbreakable's author/stand user.

Volume 12 of Jojolion and 1 and 2 of a new Diamond is Unbreakable omnibus are also being released.

Part V: Vento Aureo

Running in Shonen Jump from 1995 to 1999, the phase moves the action to Naples in the year 2001, where the latest JoJo, Giorno Giovana, aims to become a mafia boss.

Part VI: Stone Ocean is featured.

Running 17 volumes  (volumes 64 to 80 of the entire series) in Shonen Jump between between 1999 and 2002, the series is set in Florida's Green Dolphin Street Prison and follows and the first female Jojo, Jolyne Cujoh. She's voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro in works such as the All-Star Battle game. Allies include Ermes Costello (Chizu Yonemoto), Foo Fighters (Ryoko Shiraishi), Weather Report (Toru Okawa) and Narciso Anasui (Yuichi Nakamura).

"Fate / Apocrypha" Teases Major Announcement

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The cover of volume 11 of Type-Moon Ace, a mook ("magazine-book") published by Kadokawa dedicated to all things Type-Moon and Fate-related, is teasing a "major announcement" coming soon regarding the spin-off light novel series Fate/Apocrypha.

Fate/Apocrypha is a series of light novels set in an alternate timeline to Fate/stay night written by Yūichirō Higashide and illustrated by Ototsugu Konoe. Five volumes of Fate/Apocrypha were published from 2012 - 2014. Already fans are speculating that the "major announcement" may involve a drama CD or an anime adaptation, although I think "pachinko machine" is another distinct possibility.

More information will be made available on April 15, 2016, when volume 11 of Type-Moon Ace goes on sale in Japan.

Canada Notices That It Has Been Destroyed By "Gundam"

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

"Cool Japan" just seems like a bunch of political, hype nonsense, until it's your city that gets wrecked by some interplanetary space war. Mobile Suit GUNDAM Iron Blooded Orphans recently batted the full Cool Japan cycle. First, the anime destroyed Alberta, Canada capital Edmonton under the nom de guerre of "Arbrau." This was picked up on by Nopy's Blog, who did a rundown of real versus anime locales, which was picked up by the local Metro News affiliate, which was then picked up by Japanese anime blogs.

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

And for a brief second Tsukihime fans were not totally salty.

It's been the better part of a year since Comp Ace's irregularly published TYPE-MOON spinoff has offered an update on plans for the long-anticipated remake of vampire visual novel Tsukihime. Well, there's an 11th edition out April 15th, and a preview of its contents is promising news about the project.

The issue will also feature

Fate/EXTRA Last Encore - with new art for the upcoming Shaft anime based on the PSP RPG

Fate/EXTELLA - with new screen shots and character information

Lots of Fate/Grand Order material, including a scoop on Chapter V, art, stories and more

Co-creator/write Kinoko Nasu discussing Fate/Extra and Fate/Grand Order

The latest information on Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel]

Last we heard, Tsukihime's center of action is being moved close to Tokyo and in addition to updating the designs for the existing cast new characters will be introduced, particularly related to protagonist Shiki Tohno's school.

What is an animator? Aside from a miserable pile of secrets, animators are puppeteers who take inanimate objects and create the illusion of life and motion. They craft movement and perform through their characters. If you want to become one, you should start by deciding which of the many formats - 2D, 3D, stop motion, etc. - you want to work in. There are a number of excellent schools we can recommend in North America (Cal Arts, Ringling, Scad, Sheridan), but you don't necessarily have to go to school as there are programs online that are cheaper and will help you learn the craft (Animation Mentor). If you do choose a school, make sure you look at the quality of its students' demo reels and its job placement rates. Animation is a competetive field, and the strength of your portfolio will be what gets you hired. Make yours better by studying demo reels from animators you admire in your preferred field. But remember, you're always a student when it comes to animation. Study movement, study acting, study the work of other animators - there's always something you can learn. When you do get on a project, understand the purpose of the animation you're crafting and be ready to communicate with a team, since this is a rarely a solo endeavor. And finally, while you're pushing yourself constantly to get better, make sure to take time to congratulate yourself on the progress you're making.

Adult Swim Orders New Seasons of "FLCL" Anime

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Turner’s Adult Swim has announced the production of sequels to OVA FLCL. Back for the new season is FLCL series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki, serving as supervisor with director Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion) on the Production I.G anime. Also joining this season is writer Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner).

Turner describes the project

Created in 2000, FLCL told the tale of Naota, a 12-year-old boy who met a woman that would forever change his life…whether he liked it or not.

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth?
What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?
And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

“The original FLCL is an anime classic and has been a fixture on Adult Swim since we first laid eyes on it,” said Jason DeMarco, senior vice president/creative director, Adult Swim On-Air. “I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators, for Toonami, where it belongs.”

“FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, co-founder, president and CEO of Production I.G. “This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.”

Sanrio's "Aggressive Retsuko" Explores the Joys of Work and Death Metal

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty and numerous other popular mascot characters, are rolling out a new short-form TV anime entitled Aggressive Retsuko. The titular character is the result of a 2015 general election poll where fans voted that they wanted to see a new character with a salaryman / office lady theme.

In Aggressive Retsuko, Retsuko is a red panda who works all day as an office lady at a successful trading firm. However, the stresses of office life and dealing with her overbearing co-workers are often too much for Retsuko to bear, so she blows off steam by performing solitary karaoke in a "death metal" voice.

The Aggressive Retsuko short-form anime debuts on April 02, 2016, on TBS as part of the King's Brunch variety TV program. Each episode will be approximately one minute in length. The series is directed by Rareko (Sushi and Beyond).

This character speaks to me on a personal level.

Understanding the Witness - Mechanical Transference and You - Extra Credits

by Extra Credits

Tucked away in a secret theater inside the Witness is a film clip from the indie movie Nostalghia, where we watch a man agonizingly - and for no rational reason - try to carry a flickering candle flame across a watery courtyard. This little clip brilliantly captures the feeling of playing The Witness and presents a metaphor for the player's struggle to solve its difficult puzzles. (---More below)

___________

In the theater beneath the windmill, Jonathan Blow hides a clip from an indie film called Nostalghia. It's directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, the same man who directed the Stalker movie that birthed its own series of games. In the clip, we watch a man agonizingly make his way across a watery courtyard, carrying a flame that keeps blowing out in the wind. He tries, he fails, he thinks about cheating - he goes back to the beginning and starts all over again. The film is a perfect metaphor for the player's experience, trying again and again at a task that seems meaningless to any outside observer yet remaining fanatically dedicated to carrying it out the right way. In the film, the main character's been instructed by a mad man that carrying this candle will save the world, and what begins as a casual agreement for him becomes an obsession that he shares. In the same way, the Witness may begin as a simple challenge for players, but soon draws them in to a world of patterns and puzzles that they can't help but see everywhere in the real world, in the objects that surround them in day-to-day life. The end of the Witness shows us a live action film clip of a person (perhaps Jon Blow) stumbling through the game development studio, finding these patterns in everything he sees, and showing us how our exploration of the game and immersion into its puzzles mirrors the inescapable obsession of the developer, who after years of crafting over 600 of these puzzles, can't help but see them everywhere and who has now passed that obsession along to us through the very game that created it.
