Otakon 2016: Artist Alley

by reversethieves

narutaki_icon_4040_round This year I didn’t spend as much time in the alley as I usually do. So I’m not too keen on making any overall observations about what was there this year. I will say there seemed to be a lot more artists making comics, fan or original, than I’ve seen in years past. Oh how I wished I could have gotten more!

Anyway, this is mostly a shoutout post for the amazing artists that I picked stuff up from at this year’s Otakon.

With a tagline like “Delinquent Animals!” there was really no way that my first purchase wasn’t going to be Cry to the Moon an original comic anthology by Love Love Hill (Twitter: @love_love_hill). They had a ton of other comics as well, and now I wish I had picked up more.

I added a number of other prints to my collection, the range of styles on display was just fantastic. I picked up a Detective Conan print which was a Yotsuba parody by papricots (Twitter: @papricots). A gorgeous pastel-y Full Metal Alchemist print by Corrie Young (Twitter: @coryoungart) I couldn’t pass up. A perfectly colorful Joseph and Caesar from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 2 print by Animus Rhythm had to be added to my pieces. And a rare Slayers print by Kim Madison (Twitter: @deadsidekicks) was a treat to find. I couldn’t pass up a Saint Tail postcard by Chu (Twitter: @chumaruko).

Not surprisingly Fire Emblem Fates stuff was out in full-force. Since I wasn’t all that happy with the game however, I was glad to still see Fire Emblem Awakening stuff about (as usual very little other FE titles). So I picked up a delightful Fire Emblem Awakening fanbook by Emmy (Twitter: @shaburdies). She even drew a little Cherche on the inside cover for me!

Along with the book by Emmy, I got a Splatoon postcard. I saw a number of other squid-related pieces in the alley. I got another postcard, this one advertising the roller by Milkbun (Twitter: @milkbun). And I picked up a squid sisters button by Sara Wawa (Twitter: @sararawawa)

Other buttons I added to my collection are a License-less Rider from ONE-PUNCH MAN button by Voidbug. A Fukurodani logo from Haikyuu!! button by Cosmic Crown. Another set of Joseph and Caesar from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 2 buttons, these ones by J. Calderone.

No surprise, I got another Link from the Legend of Zelda button but in this one he is using a bow and it was made by Maya Kern (Twitter: @mayakern). I also scooped up a cool Zelda double-sided bookmark (one side was shiny!) by lani (Twitter: @lanimani).

A unique booth by Cara Mcgee (Twitter: @ohcararara) was selling tea blends, each themed after a character from a series. The blends were in tins with custom artwork and made about 3-4 servings. And strangely enough there was tea based on Rainbow Rowell’s novel Carry On. Not anime, but a very unexpected find all the same, and I couldn’t pass it up. I picked up Baz Grim-Pitch tea.

Being me, I rounded things out by buying some dog stuff. I picked up a dog button from Lauren who I’ve gotten things from in the past. And I found a beautiful print of Japanese Spitz breeds by Naomi Romero (Twitter: @NaomiRomeroArt).

Last, but certainly not least, I want to mention Katie Tiedrich (Twitter: @katietiedrich) the artist of Awkward Zombie. She was not in Artist Alley but in the Dealer’s Hall selling books and prints, plus signing and sketching as she did so. When I bought a book, she asked, “Who is your favorite Fire Emblem?” I answered the only correct way, “Lyn.”

"Bayonetta" amiibo Tease Leaves the Final Product to Your Imagination

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The dust has certainly settled on the amiibo craze over recent months, but there's an exciting addition on the horizon. When a character joins Super Smash Bros. it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that an amiibo is on the way, and now we have some physical evidence of the upcoming Bayonetta figure.

Bayonetta 2 director Yusuke Hashimoto posted an update on the PlatinumGames blog, offering up a sly tease of the new amiibo. This one is nicely timed for the second anniversary of Bayonetta 2, but no concrete release date has been announced. For now you'll have to make do with this very close-up photo:

Here's what Hashimoto had to say:

I’m afraid that this little taste is all I can give you right now, since we’re still working hard to get her just right. But I assure you that we’re going to capture everything you know and love about Bayonetta – every detail down to the exact sizes of her glasses and eyes – and bring you an amiibo that’ll meet your every expectation.

Back when we were making Bayonetta 2, there wasn’t any talk of bringing the game to life in three dimensions like this. In fact, this is the first time a character from a game I’ve directed has been made into a figure. I’m shocked by how well Bayonetta’s essence has been shrunk down to fit in the palm of your hand! What an amazing era…

I’m really looking forward to the full unveiling of the Bayonetta amiibo, and I hope you’re as excited as I am.

The Russian Roulette of Comedy: Mahou Shoujo? Naria Girls

by sdshamshel
Alainmendez

That was my favorite line so far as well.

nariagirls

I love the dumb, yet incredibly clever humor of gdgd Fairiesstyle humor. Typically combining incredibly cheap animation with a cleverly absurd dialogue, a splash of improv comedy, and willful ignorance over their own premises, these anime always bring a smile to my face. The team behind gdgd Fairies has since gone on to do a variety of shows in that vein, including one about robot girls trying to discover humor, a Transformers series, one about personified Sega consoles, and now we have come to their most daring (and perhaps low-budget) work: Mahou Shoujo? Naria Girls.

Though technically a background story exists, it really doesn’t matter. Three young girls get magic powers to rescue a far-off magic kingdom, but it just so happens that every monster of the week’s scheme “coincidentally” resembles an improv skit like what you’d find on Whose Line Is It Anyway? It’s the kind of show where the girls transform from their school uniforms… to their school uniforms, with no discernible difference.

Unlike the other series mentioned, which are very simply animated using programs such as Miku Miku Dance and Flash, Naria Girls actually uses motion-capture, directly translating its actresses’ motions onto 3D anime-style models. Motion capture can be a finicky thing, and it can take a lot of careful work to not make character movement appear unnatural or to avoid tiny mistakes that come from trying to automate such a process. Naria Girls does not care. Its use of mocap is very rudimentary and constantly exposes its flaws, but then I think that blatant disregard for what is supposed to be a “professional quality work” is what makes the show kind of charming in the first place.

The other appealing quality of the series, though I must warn that it is paradoxically what makes it difficult to watch as well, is that it takes the improv element of the gdgd Fairies-style show to the extreme. If Seha Girls is one end of the spectrum, where all the jokes are scripted and planned out, then Naria Girls is the opposite. From start to finish through each 8-minute episode, all of the jokes are clearly made up on the spot. If that wasn’t enough, the show was revealed in June for a July broadcast, and they were still auditioning for cast members.

The result is that the show can be funny, but often times isn’t, namely because the actresses themselves are not particularly good at improvising. Even eight minutes is hard to maintain if the comedians themselves aren’t experts at it. However, the Russian Roulette element of watching Naria Girls, where you truly cannot tell if the show will be amusing from one moment to the next, is why I enjoy it. When a joke works, it’s a cause for celebration. When a joke falls so utterly flat that it’s like humor itself has been sucked into a black hole, it somehow comes out the other side still being an interesting artifact.

Naria Girls isn’t as good as its predecessors, but it is its own exciting experiment and adventure. That’s why I’m on board.

She sends an appreciation message to the people who have supported her activities for 30 years, and

says she will take time to think about her next step in future. This is the last post on her official blog

launched three years ago.
