Finally, a Place to Store All That "Detective Conan" Manga

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Detective Conan (or Cased Closed stateside) has an impressive manga run: 90 volumes and counting. So how's a fan to store and show off all those books? Don't worry, Weekly Shonen Sunday has its subscribers covered.

These special cases will be available to subscribers starting in January. Each box holds ten volumes and is handily labeled as such, as well as including foll-color illustrations from the series.

A second set of display boxes for the rest of the manga will be available starting in February.

The boxes can also be closed up individually and stored that way, if you so desire.

Information is still forthcoming on what subscribers need to do (if anything) to get their boxes. And no, the tankubon are not included.

Where in Time is Thomas Edison?: Time Travel Girl Anime Review

by sdshamshel

timetravelgirl

As a kid growing up in the 1990s, there were a number of educational shows that tried their best to be cool. Some perennial favorites, like Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, played to the beat of their own drums. Others failed miserably and came across as more cringe-worthy than anything else. But there were a handful that managed to just be “cool enough” that, while you wouldn’t brag to your friends that you were watching these shows, they still felt like they had merit and weren’t overly didactic in their “edumucatin’.” That’s exactly the territory where the 2016 anime Time Travel Girl: Mari-Waka and the Eight Scientists resides.

Apparently based on a 1983 Japanese children’s educational book called Magnets & Electricity, Time Travel Girl follows a girl named Mari as she inadvertently discovers a way to travel through time, always finding herself meeting a great scientist or inventor tied to the history of electromagnetism. As shown in the opening, the eight in question are: William Gilbert, Benjamin Franklin, Alessandro Volta, Michael Faraday, Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, Heinrich Hertz, and Thomas Edison.

In terms of look, Time Travel Girl does not seem like it comes from this era of anime, no pun intended. From the characters’ hair and eyes, to their archetypes, to even the opening itself, it looks like a show that stepped out of 2003. Placed next to older series like World of Narue or Someday’s Dreamers, it wouldn’t appear out of place at all. I think that also lends to the feeling of Time Travel Girl being a “cool” educational cartoon, because it’s like the aesthetics are a bit out-of-touch with current Japanese animation. That being said, the actual show is fairly fun and informative, and it does resolve instead of remaining open-ended. This is despite the fact that its formula makes that sort of repetition oh-so-easy.

What probably impresses me most about the series is the way it pushes the message that science and discovery are about questioning what we take for granted. By not letting assumptions (be they personal, religious, etc.) control us, it opens up pathways not only for we as individuals to learn, but also in the process creates opportunities for those in the future. A less pertinent message, but important in its own right, is that the show implicitly presents its own theory for why Thomas Edison was an asshole (seriously, look it up). There’s even a bit about slavery in the Benjamin Franklin episode.

If there’s any American cartoon series I would liken Time Travel Girl to, it would have to be Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? No, not the one with Rockapella, and not (despite the thematic similarities) the followup quiz show Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? I’m talking about the one with the grandiose opening, the two kids, and the giant floating virtual head for a chief. Both it and Time Travel Girl have just enough pizazz to be entertaining, but neither are especially gripping examples of animation.

Based on my dated comparison, it’s very clear that Time Travel Girl is certainly not meant for me. However, I could actually see it being dubbed into English and broadcast on TV, as it is unabashedly an educational cartoon. I think it would do all right in that capacity, though I don’t know if we’re still at a point where the characters’ Asian origins would be removed.

"PreCure Dream Stars!" Film Teaser Introduces New PreCure? Girl

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

On the theatrical release day of the franchise's newest film Eiga Mahou Tsukai PreCure! Kiseki no Henshin! Cure Mofurun! (Maho Girls PreCure! The Movie: Miracle Transformation! Cure Mofurun!) in Japan, a teaser site for the next PreCure film titled PreCure Dream Stars! opens with a 30-second teaser introducing a new PreCure? girl. It has not been announced yet whether the girl is a character from the next TV series to premiere in February 2017 or a guest character just for the film.

The teaser also confirms the film will not be an "All Stars" film that has all of the PreCure girls from the past series. As of now, the total number of the main PreCure girls is 45, so it has already become impossible to feature all of them in a 70-minute film. The teaser and the main visual on the site features only four from the previous Go Princess PreCure! (Flora, Mermaid, Twinkle, Scarlet), three from the ongoing Mahou Tsukai PreCure!/maho Girls PreCure! (Miracle, Magical, Felice), and the girl with an unknown animal.

The site explains the story of the film as: "Beyond the door of light, there is a mysterious shining world,

then (we) encounter one girl. What will happen to the PreCure in the world covered with cherry blossoms

in full bloom? In the coming spring, a brand new story, not an All Stars, will begin!"

PreCure Dream Stars! is set to open in Japan on March 18, 2017. Advance tickets with a special toy will

go on sale on January 28.

Happy 80th Birthday To Goku Voice Actress Masako Nozawa

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

As we noted this summer when she was commenting on modern voice actors, appearing in 1963's Astro Boy, then playing major roles in 65's Obake no Q-tarō, 66's Sally the Witch, and 68's Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro, voice actress Masako Nozawa's career has spanned the entire history of TV anime. And, she's still active in what is arguably her best known role, Dragon Ball's Goku (plus Gohan, Goten, Goten, Goku Jr, the fusions, Black Goku, Bardock). Today, "The Eternal Boy" turns 80.

Let's wish the legendary voice actress a happy birthday!

"One Piece" Manga Editor Recounts Creator's Willing To Die For Series

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

Since I mentioned it to Kate:

The golden Shonen Jump motto is supposed to be "Friendship, Effort, Victory," and, like a true Shonen Jump hero, One Piece author Eiichiro Oda is willing to put body and soul on the line to achieve his dream. Famously he gets only three hours of sleep on average (2 am to 5:am) with zero holidays. Naoki Kawashima, an editor who worked with Oda on One Piece says that the mangaka has a stark way of putting this.

“The thing I remember most when I took over [as editor] was Oda telling me, ‘Die for One Piece.'” Though Kawashima initially laugh, be found Oda to be serious about the assertion.

“Because, in fact, Oda is that resolute in drawing the manga,” Kawashima added. “At that time he when he said those words to me, I was like, ‘woah, really?'” Kawashima explained that he was ultimately moved by what Oda said.

Only true up to a point. Depends very much on the artist. Dave...

Only true up to a point. Depends very much on the artist. Dave McKean looked at my long description of everyone at a party (in Hellblazer 27), and then drew two people in soft focus framing the people who were talking, telling us that there was a party going on without drawing it. Whereas Sam Keith was so happy drawing individual demons from horizon to horizon across a double page spread in Sandman #4, that he inked it himself as well. Most of the fun of writing Sandman came from asking artists what they wanted to draw. Some artists I’ve known go pale at the thought of having to draw two people talking in a room over and over and only cheer up when you offer them an armada of 200 spaceships…

07th Expansion Accidentally Suggests Second "Umineko" Anime

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Coming up this Sunday, the work of doujin murder mystery game developer 07th Expansion (Higurashi, Umineko) will be celebrated with 07th MASQUERADE, a chance for their group and their fans to show off tribute manga, cosplay and more. 07th Expansion teased the books that they were bringing and unfortunately that lead to a bit of a misunderstanding.

What was a second book about the 2009 adaptation of 2007 visual Umineko When They Cry was initially interpreted as an early teaser of a second anime in development before the group clarified.

Small comfort, but, there is however, a new collaboration t-shirt...

NIS, who released the anime in North America, described it

VOLUME 1 STORY INTRODUCTION

The affluent Ushiromiya family patriarch, Kinzo, is on his deathbed, and his family has assembled at their private island to discuss the division of his estate. As they bicker over their father's immense inheritance, a typhoon closes in, trapping them on the island. They suddenly receive an eerie word of warning...and then, in the dead of night, the murders begin.

One by one, family members are discovered murdered in bizarre and inhuman ways. Some within the family turn to superstition, blaming it on a witch rumored to inhabit the island. But one of them - the young Battler Ushiromiya - refuses to accept the supernatural and vows to uncover the real killer behind the seemingly impossible slaughters. He soon finds himself confronted by the apparent witch, and enters into a life-or-death battle for the truth.

VOLUME 2 STORY INTRODUCTION

Trapped on an isolated island in the middle of a raging typhoon, Battler Ushiromiya has found himself locked in an unending struggle with a woman calling herself the Golden Witch Beatrice to uncover the truth behind the gruesome murders of everyone in his family.

Are these killings the supernatural work of an ageless witch, or is that just the cover story for a far more ruthlessly human plot? As he searches for clues and draws closer to the truth, a mysterious young girl suddenly appears on the island. She claims she can help him, but could this fiery ally be nothing more than a trap set by the "witch" herself...?

The Umineko visual novel is being offered in North America by MangaGamer.
