Childhood Photos of Hideaki Anno, Courtesy of His Wife Moyoco

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Hideaki Anno has been prepping busily for Khara, Inc.'s tenth anniversary exhibit, which starts today and runs for one week. But his wife, manga artist Moyoco Anno, is observing the anniversary in her own special way -- and that's outside of the one-shot manga she drew for visitors to the special exhibit.

She's using her Twitter to share childhood photos of her husband.

Even in older photos, it's not hard to recognize Anno's somber expression, though Moyoco makes a special note of his "famous" earlobes in her tweet.

She also includes this photo, featuring schoolboy Anno playing an old farmer in a school play. As Moyoco notes, his history with daikon goes back even further than we thought!

"Khara, Inc. 10th Anniversary Exhibit ~Evas from the Past & Future & the Present Studio Khara~" runs from now until November 30, 11 am to 5 pm, at Laforet Museum Harajuku. Tickets are 500 yen.

Ogiue 009: Ogiue Maniax 9th Anniversary

by sdshamshel

Today marks nine years of Ogiue Maniax. Normally, this would be a post reflecting back on just the blog itself, but the world is in such a crazy spot at the moment that the times of a small anime blog seem to pale in comparison. Still, while a huge part of me wants to do more to help my fellow human beings, I still plan on keeping up with all the anime and manga out there.

Nine years is not that far from eight, but somehow it feels like so much more. Maybe it’s because the big “10” is on the horizon, and that’s a pretty crazy place to be. Most anime blogs last maybe two to three years, and somehow I’ve been chugging along. I attribute it to stubbornness, perseverance, and a willingness to let half-baked and flawed ideas get posted (sometimes typos and all). A friend recently told me a famous quote: “Perfect is the enemy of good enough.” I think, when it comes to the things I’ve accomplished in my life, especially this blog, that accounts for a good deal of my success.

Perhaps the biggest topic of the entire year for Ogiue Maniax is the end of Genshiken itself. In my final chapter review, I wrote about all the good times I had with the series, and how it impacted the blog, and the takeaway from all of that is simply, Genshiken changed and so did Ogiue Maniax. What it means to be a fan or an otaku, the cultural associations with these ideas, has morphed significantly over the course of nine years. In a recent episode of Anime World Order, they discussed the increase in the number of fashion designers as guests at Anime Weekend Atlanta (and cons in general). Just thinking about how we live in a world where fashion is a big deal to nerds says to me that we’re in a very different place.

Genshiken reflected these changes well, which makes me want to go back and take another look. For that reason, I am making an announcement:

Starting next year (most likely January 2017), I will be re-reviewing the original Genshiken manga. Rather than going chapter by chapter, I am going to be looking at it one volume at a time on an approximately bi-monthly schedule. I already reviewed the series a long time ago (for my first anniversary!), but I expect to get a new perspective on an old friend, especially with knowledge of Nidaime.

Another sign that Ogiue Maniax is nine years old is that the blog itself looks like it comes from nine years ago. I’ve considered changing the design at some point, but I’m just not sure. Blogging itself in this format seems to have left the lands of trendiness long ago as well, and perhaps I’ve stubbornly refused to adapt to changing times in that regard. YouTube will never be my medium, but I wonder if it’d be worth it to really mix things up.

While not exactly a stylistic change, in light of recent events in the world I’m considering something. I might make more posts that veer towards political thought, though not in a way that takes over Ogiue Maniax or makes it any less of an anime blog. One can argue that just about any action can be political (including actively tried to avoid it), but what I’m thinking about is writing more about the goings-on of politics with respect to the US, Japan, and elsewhere, and how they potentially impact fans, production, and the on-going conversations we have about respect, anger, diversity, and so on. However, I am aware of how much the strength of my writing comes from trying to see all sides of a situation and I wish to not get so embroiled in thinking of “sides” that I don’t challenge my own viewpoint on a regular basis, so I don’t wish it to become too much a part of any “cause.” It’s a balancing act that I’m still trying to figure out as a person, and I still fully intend on maintaining my love of anime’s sheer variety.

That was a bit of a ramble, but those are my genuine thoughts and feelings. I hope you’ll hang on with me as we jump into 2017 and reach a decade of Ogiue Maniax.

Journey to a New World of Cuisine When "Isekai Shokudo" Comes to TV

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

It was reported not long ago that Junpei Inuzuka's light novel series Isekai Shokudo ("Alternate-World Restaurant") would be receiving both a manga and an anime adaptation, though details were scant on both. Now, the manga adaptation has been launched in the most recent Young Gangan magazine from Square Enix, and it's also been announced that the anime adaptation will be airing on television.

Isekai Shokudo was first published Shōsetsuka ni Narō ("Let's Become a Novelist") before being picked up for print release. Three volumes of the book have appeared in print. The series tells the story of the Western Cuisine Cat Restaurant, a seemingly typical eatery open during regular business hours. But the restaurant is secretly open on weekends, during which it offers a unique menu to unique patrons.

There are no further details available on the anime adaptation at this time.

Tokyosaurus Shows Us Who Makes the Most in the Anime Industry

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

When we think of money with regards to anime, we tend to think how much a new box set costs us. But YouTube channel Tokyosaurus has taken an in-depth look at what people in all parts of the anime industry -- and in all parts of the world -- actually make per year.

Probably not surprisingly, animators in the Phillipines come in on the low end, with part-timers making almost three times as much (likely via multiple income sources). Episode directors, CG artists, and series directors make progressively more. But can you guess who makes the most?

Voice actors. That's right, the actors who speak for your favorite characters can end up making more than half a million dollars a year, according to the video.

The original list comes from the anime series Shirobako, which goes behind the scenes of anime production. It's also worth noting that these prices only refer to Japanese voice actors, and not to dub actors.

Sosuke Ikematsu Stars in Live-Action "Gin to Kin" TV Drama

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

Kenjiro Hata's favorite Fukumoto manga.

Gin to Kin ("Silver and Gold") - a manga by Nobuyuki Fukumoto (AkagiKaiji) about a shadowy society of bankers, politicians, and other rich elites that engage in seedy schemes and underhanded deals in pursuit of staggering sums of money - is being adapted into a live-action TV drama that will debut on TV Tokyo in January of 2017.

The original Gin to Kin manga was serialized from 1992 - 1996 in Futabasha's Action Pizazz adult manga magazine. The series is directed by Tomoyuki Furumaya and features screenplays by Junpei Yamaoka and Nonji Nemoto.

Gin to Kin will air on TV Tokyo and its affiliates as part of its late-night "Saturday Drama 24" programming block, with new episodes every Saturday at 12:20 AM JST beginning in January of 2017. The series will also be streamed on Amazon Prime Japan.

"Hayate the Combat Butler" Manga Entering Final Phase

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

There's no shortage of Hayate the Combat Butler media out there; even so, the fact that it's about to end will strike many fans as being far too soon.

The final chapter of Kenjiro Hata's genre-savvy, heavily referential manga series has officially begun in the most recent Weekly Shonen Sunday,  Volume 51. The manga has run in the magazine for 49 chapters, starting in October 2004.

The manga, about a poor boy who inadvertently becomes butler to a rich fangirl named Nagi and ends up becoming embroiled in everything from love triangles to butler battles, was also adapted into an anime spanning four series. While technically a shonen manga, it referenced everything from classic anime to shoujo series to American dramas.

There is no word on how long the final chapter will run, but look forward to seeing an exciting finale unfole.

"Princess Jellyfish" And "Kitaro" Manga Make Amazon's Top Graphic Novels of 2016 List

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Ready or not, it's that time of year again. Yep, the best of lists have started coming out. Amazon has selected 20 books in an unranked order, and, in the Comics and Graphic Novels category, manga entries included Akiko Higashimura's josei comedy Princess Jellyfish, published by Kodansha Comics (the digital version is on Crunchyroll) and Shigeru Mizuki's seminal all-ages yokai manga Birth of Kitaro.

Princess Jellyfish 1

STINGING BEAUTY

Tsukimi Kurashita has a strange fascination with jellyfish. She’s loved them from a young age and has carried that love with her to her new life in the big city of Tokyo. There, she resides in Amamizukan, a safe-haven for girl geeks who regularly gush over a range of things from trains to Japanese dolls. However, a chance meeting at a pet shop has Tsukimi crossing paths with one of the things that the residents of Amamizukan have been desperately trying to avoid—a beautiful and fashionable woman! But there’s much more to this woman than her trendy clothes! This odd encounter is only the beginning of a new and unexpected path for Tsukimi and her friends.

The Birth of Kitaro

The Birth of Kitaro collects seven of Shigeru Mizuki's early, and beloved, Kitaro stories, making them available for the first time in English, in an all-new, kid-friendly format. These stories are from the golden era of the late 1960s, when Gegege no Kitaro truly hit its stride as an all-ages supernatural series. Mizuki's Kitaro stories are both timelessly relevant and undeniably influential, inspiring a decades-long boom in stories about yokai, Japanese ghosts, and monsters.

"Kitaro's Birthday" reveals the origin story of the yokai boy Kitaro and his tiny eyeball father, Medama Oyaji. "Neko Musume versus Nezumi Otoko" is the first of Mizuki's stories to feature the popular recurring character Neko Musume, a little girl who transforms into a cat when she gets angry or hungry. Other stories in The Birth of Kitaro draw heavily from Japanese folklore, with Kitaro taking on legendary Japanese yokai like the Nopperabo and Makura Gaeshi, and fighting the monstrous recurring villain Gyuki.

With more than 150 pages of spooky and often funny comics about the titular yokai boy, The Birth of Kitaro is the perfect introduction to the award-winning author Mizuki's most popular series, seminal comics that have won the hearts of Japanese children and adults for more than half a century.

Precure is Not a Lesser Sailor Moon

by sdshamshel

curemoonlight

A few months ago at Otakon, I was talking with Alain from the Reverse Thieves, who had attended a panel about magical girls and feminism. He had described how the presenter went through the various series she’d be discussing, but made specific mention that she’d be omitting Precure from the discussion, citing the fact that she wasn’t particularly impressed. Although I did not attend the panel myself, I found that to be unfortunate, not because of the dismissal of Precure by the presenter in isolation, but because this stance on the long-running magical girl franchise is not that uncommon. Among many fans, presenters, and even scholars, Precure is assumed to be bland and generic and not worth discussion.

In my opinion, that kind of thinking is a mistake. Precure is not only the biggest and most popular magical girl property of the past ten years, eclipsing even Sailor Moon in certain ways (sales, longevity on TV, etc.) and therefore worth observing for its cultural footprint, but it is also a fount of positive imagery for girls. While there are certain elements that can remain issues, such as the increasing ubiquity of pink as the only possible color for the main heroine and the fact that a lot of the magical girl outfits have high heels, Precure utilizes strong female characters by default, rather than making a big deal out of their existence. What’s more, because the series refreshes itself every year or two, its variety results in different approaches to characterization of female characters and themes pertaining to feminism. You have weak girls who become strong over time (as well as a nuanced exploration of what it means to grow), heroines who are more ideals of human potential, and even characters who try to reclaim the term “princess” to mean something more than “demure.” Even the very first series is significant due to its portrayal of girls having aggressive, hand to hand fights (in a show for young girls, no less), and the fact that its two main characters are more about their life goals than pining at the boys around them.

I have my suspicions as to why Precure has ended up with this reputation, and a lot of it has to do with Sailor Moon. It was the first of its kind, the sentai-inspired battling magical girl genre of which Precure is a part. In terms of cultural influence around the world, Sailor Moon has crossed the barrier from niche interest for anime fans only to seminal work, and is frequently cited as a pivotal show in the development of many young artists. Just the fact that it portrays these mature-looking girls who fight and win is on a basic level empowering and inspiring, and so any similar series gets compared not only to Sailor Moon but also its presence as a kind of nostalgic defining moment where any weaknesses it possesses as a series are forgiven. It’s also very important to point out that, especially in the US, Precure is just plain hard to come by. As a result, for English speakers it has much less potential of becoming part of the fabric of one’s upbringing, with the possible exception of Smile Precure!, which has been loosely adapted to become Glitter Force on Netflix.

I get the feeling that, when the Sailor Moon generation typically sees Precure, a common process occurs. First, they see that Precure is similar, and that its story (depending on which version they watch) is often more lighthearted initially. Second, they see that the character designs are younger-looking, and so it seems less mature as well. Third, they might do a bit of research and become aware that the franchise is also popular with adult men, lending a sort of “creepy pervert” vibe to their impressions. Finally, they fill in the blanks, and without watching much more, jump to the conclusion that the franchise can’t possibly do things so differently from Sailor Moon that it’d be worth looking into more, or that it’s only for sad otaku (unaware that Sailor Moon was the show for doujinshi in its heyday). Moreover, because Precure doesn’t have the more immediately apparent dark appeal of a Revolutionary Girl Utena or a Madoka Magica, it’s further assumed to be generic kiddie fare. That’s not to say that the series isn’t for children, but that the type of maturity it carries is more in how it approaches the task of trying to show strong images for a female audience. As discussed above, I believe Precure does this to great success, and to see it brushed aside saddens and angers me.

I like Sailor Moon, and I don’t mean to paint fans of that series with the same brush. However, because it is a defining magical girl show for a lot of people, it gets written about as if it is the be-all, end-all of its particular brand of mahou shoujo. The reputation of Sailor Moon surpasses what is actually in the series in a certain way, and it casts an unfair shadow on Precure when Precure does many things that I would argue are improvements or directions that Sailor Moon never goes. This is especially the case with its feminist qualities. My hope is that, when people think about progressive portrayals in anime and the magical girl genre, they not only remember that Precure exists, but are aware of all that it offers.

Scream Figma Now Ready To Bring Angst To Your Display Shelf

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Over the summer, the Wonder Festival figure event presented a prototype of a figma inspired by Norwegian painter/printmaker Edvard Munch's classic "The Scream" by The Table Museum series from FREEing, Max Factory and Good Smile Company. This latest from the line that takes classics of (so far all Western) art and turns them into rather irreverent poseable figures is now on sale.

SP-086

figma The Scream

The first Table Museum figure based on a painting - Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'!

The 'Table Museum' is a series of figma figures based on famous works of art that almost anyone would recognize! The seventh product to join the series opens up the art exhibits with Edvard Munch's classic artwork - 'The Scream'. This work of art based on the theme of angst was a masterpiece that still captures the attention of art fans to this day.

As the figure is based on a painting, the figure also comes with a special frame part to display behind him to fully recreate the original work! The figure will seem to be jumping out from the frame for a lovely display for both art and figure fans to enjoy. Enjoy one of the first ever figures based on a work of art!

  • Using the smooth yet posable joints of figma, you can create various different action poses.
  • A flexible plastic is used for important areas, allowing proportions to be kept without compromising posability.
  • Optional parts include a wide variety of different hand parts.
  • An articulated figma stand is included, which allows various poses to be taken.

Scandalous Key Visual Confirms "Ai-Mai-Mi" 3rd Season (NSFW-ish)

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Good news for fans of Choborau Nyopomi's particular brand of bizarre comedy: frantic short-form TV anime comedy Ai-Mai-Mi is returning to Japanese TV for a 3rd season in 2017.

The news was announced on the TV anime's official Twitter feed, and the official home page has also been updated with a somewhat scandalous key visual featuring the girls of the manga club in a particularly unclothed state. Further details about the production, such as cast, staff, and release date, have not yet been published.

The original Ai-Mai-Mi manga is published in Takeshobo's Manga Win Life digital manga publication. The two previous anime adaptations (Ai-Mai-Mi and Ai-Mai-Mi Mousou Catastrophe) are directed by Itsuki Imazaki and feature animation by Seven.
