“If I became a bad person, would you be able to forgive me?”

The boy wished to protect the girl. That was his thought.

10 years after the Holy Grail War—a battle waged by Masters and Servants over the wish-granter, the Holy Grail—another war breaks out in Fuyuki City.

Shirou Emiya—the adopted son of Kiritsugu Emiya, a participant of the previous Holy Grail War—resolves to fight, carrying out Kiritsugu’s dying wish.

There’s a young girl by Shirou’s side who’s in love with him—Sakura Matou.

Every morning, she goes to Shirou’s house to make breakfast and dinner for him, bringing kindness into the life of a boy utterly alone in the world.

But once the Holy Grail War starts, there’s a change in the air in Fuyuki City.

Murders abound across the city, and the atmosphere grows ominous.

Shirou decides to shelter Sakura in his home.

Along with Saber, the Servant he summons, Shirou allies himself with the mage Rin Tohsaka and takes part in the Holy Grail War.

More Details on Kyoto's "One Piece" Exhibition

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The latest of the One Piece 20th anniversary festivities kicks off next month, in the form of an art exhibit in Kyoto. As previously reported, Kyoto will be hosting a citywide event, showing off One Piece art while encouraging tourists to check out major parts of their city.

In addition, the Buddhist temple Daikaku-ji will be hosting a "story art exhibition" entitled One Piece Art Nue - Flower of the Beast, Princess, and Oath. The sode story features two new characters -- Prince Lark and his fiancee Kiku -- who are attacked by a Japanese chimera called a nue during their wedding ceremony. Of course, they seek out the Straw Hat Pirates for help.

But there's another side to the story, from the point of view of the deserter Tora Tsugu. Late one night, as Tora stumbled along a moonlit beach, he caught sight of a mysterious fruit. Starving, he bit into it... and since this is One Piece, we can guess what happened. The Devil Fruit turned Tora into a nue -- with the face of a monkey, the body of a tanuki, the limbs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail.

The exhibit will combine One Piece characters with traditional Japanese art as the story is told visually.

The Daikaku-ji exhibit will be on display as part of Kyoto's city-wide installation, which runs from October 7-22.

Curry in a Bun! Can it be Done? If They Did It in "Restaurant to Another World," You Bet, Son!

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Honestly, for MONTHS now I've looked at Feast of Fiction's Black Butler curry buns and silently stewed at home because they swooped my style. I won't lie – I can be a bit of a petty person. I didn't want to recreate the same recipe since they already did it, and I didn't want to be a copy-cat, yadda yadda. So it goes. Looking back, I'm not sure why I was so dumb about it. Curry buns are AMAZING, and, thanks to Restaurant to Another World, I had my chance to make a personal comeback without having to make the recipe from Black Butler

And boy, oh boy, was it worth it. You. GUYS. Curry buns are a thing of art. Only the Japanese could come up with something as amazing as this – curry, inside bread which has been coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried to produce a crunchy, golden-brown exterior. As presented in this episode 11, the curry buns are given as a gift to the chef. It looks like he kept them in the freezer until ready to fry, which is an awesome bonus with this recipe: the buns, once coated in panko, can easily be frozen so that you can enjoy a fresh, hot curry bun whenever it strikes your fancy.

Now, there is a fair amount of prep work that goes into this recipe. You have to make both a bread dough and a curry paste filling. However, both come together very easily, so while this recipe is labor intensive, none of the labor is actually that difficult. There are three main parts: the bread dough, the filling, and then the exterior coating. These do take time – plan to set aside a few hours to assemble and fry these babies.

The first step is to make a nice, softly sweet bread dough. Once you have that taken care of and get it rising in a warm spot, the second step is to get the curry going. The key to a good filing is making sure that it's not too watery and loose. There aren't too many recipes available online for a good filling, despite the Feast of Fiction's recipe for their own curry bun. I didn't want to replicate the Black Butler recipe, and the Restaurant to Another World recipe, as it appeared in the episode, was pretty vague. I decided to go with a curry roux packet to keep things simple (since making bread and deep frying are a lot by themselves), and made the curry the same way I normally would. Except, instead of following the recipe according to the box, I used much less water than the recipe actually calls for. Luckily, this worked perfectly to produce a filling that was not loose at all, and more like a paste! The filling on its own is a tad salty, but once you get it in the bun, it's just perfect. The concentrated curry mixture compared to the sweetness of the bread is perfect.

The last step is to deep fry. The oil needs to be hot to prevent the dough from absorbing too much extra oil. The final coating should be lightly greasy, but not dripping with oil. Hot oil will help ensure you have the perfect crunchy coating. Fry about two minutes per side, taking care to keep oil at 365°F. They will be golden brown and perfectly crisp when they're done!

Watch the video below to get started on making you own curry buns!

Ingredients for the Curry Bun:

Dough recipe adapted from here.

  • 1 1/2 cups bread flour

  • 1/2 cups cake flour

  • 1 tsp instant yeast

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp neutral oil (I used vegetable)

  • 3/4 cup water

Curry Filling:

  • 1 small russet potato

  • 1 small carrot

  • 1/2 pound ground beef

  • 1/2 box of Vermont Curry, hot

  • 2 cups water

Bun Coating:
  • 2 cups panko

  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water, beaten

  • Oil for frying (I used vegetable)

To Make the Curry Bun:

1. Start with the dough. Whisk the flours, sugar, salt, and yeast together. Add in the oil and water and stir together. When it starts to lump together, knead in the bowl until mostly all combined. Tip out onto a floured work surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until dough is soft yet firm, not sticky, and pliable. Add more water or flour as needed.

2. Form dough ball, and coat the ball and the inside of a bowl with oil. Cover top with plastic, and set in a warm place for about an hour, or ninety minutes, or until dough has doubled in size.

3. While dough is rising, prepare curry filling. Peel and finely dice carrot and potato. Place into a pan over high heat with a bit of oil, and cook about two minutes. Throw in the ground beef, and cook until browned. Then, add in the water, which is deliberately less than the box calls for. Cover the pot, and let simmer about ten minutes or until veggies are tender and soft when pierced with a fork. Turn off the heat. Break up the curry roux, and drop pieces in. Stir until the curry blocks are melted, and a thick curry paste has formed. Set aside.

4. When bread is ready, punch down and split into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, and let rise again for about 40 minutes.

5. When ready, roll each dough ball out until the dough is about 1/4 inch thick. Pile curry filling into the middle, about 1.5-2 tbsp per bun, or as much as  you can reasonably fit inside. Bring excess dough over the mound of filling, and pinch edges together until the dough is completely encased.

6. Once all the buns are formed, it's time to coat them. Coat each bun by coating it in the egg wash, and then coating each bun in a thick layer of panko. Ideally, you should coat them right before frying – don't let them sit out too long after they've been coated. At this point, you could also easily flash freeze the buns and take them out to cook later by throwing them straight into your hot oil.

7. Heat oil, which should come at least halfway up the pan you are using, to 365°F. Fry a couple of buns at a time, cooking about two minutes per side, or until golden brown.

8. Drain on a paper towel, if necessary, and eat immediately!

Meet the Woman Behind The Ancient Magus Bride

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

With The Ancient Magus Bride approaching as one of the most anticipated anime of the Fall season, Kore Yamazaki was at Crunchyroll Expo to host an advance screening of the first three episodes of the anime, deliver a Q&A on her internationally best selling manga, and play a public grudge match of Mario Kart against her editor. Between events, interviews, and autograph sessions, Yamazaki spent the her time industriously working on the latest chapter, even opting to allow one lucky audience a sneak peek at her process, illustrating several pages during a live drawing at her Q&A panel. On the final day of the convention, I guiltily interrupted her inking to ask a few questions about her career and creative process.

Can you tell me about how you became a professional mangaka?

I've been drawing illustrations since I was very little -- around three years old. I had a lot of siblings, so we would have fun drawing for each other. It was way later, when I was in high school, that I decided to become a manga author.

Did you submit an original work or win a contest?

I've never made submissions. I would mostly post doujinshi online and sometimes do my own original manga.

Can you tell us a little about your creative process week to week?

I start by outlining what the characters would say and do -- what you would call a plot outline. It's the most painful part, and I start there. Then I do what's called the "name," which is the very first rough draft, where I decide where the characters' dialogue goes and how they behave. Those two processes -- the plot outline and the name -- are the most painful. After that, I do the draft, then I do the inking, followed by all of the processing and finishing.

You’ve mentioned a few assistants. What part do they play in illustrating the manga?

There are some things that I don't need to do myself. For example, the hair colors and tones. I do work on backgrounds as well, but there are backgrounds that don't need my attention, so I let the assistant do that. I also have them put the shine in the characters' hair.

The two pillars of The Ancient Magus Bride seem to be Chise’s personal journey and the greater events of the magical world. Did the idea for one of these come before the other?

I've wanted to illustrate Chise's growth from the beginning, but I also wanted to depict Elias' growth as well. It's fantasy, but I wanted to write a story about personal growth, which both children and grown-ups can enjoy. The matter-of-fact expressions are part of my writing style, but...

I notice you spend a great deal of time focusing on both Chise’s menial work is very similar to crafting magic. Is there any sort of intention behind that?

It's hard to explain. Manga is more interesting when there are ups and downs, but depending on the material, having too many ups and downs can be off-putting to some people. I think it's more approachable when it's written in a more straightforward way.

You’ve said that writing each chapter is more like letting the characters communicate their actions to you, have they told you how the story will end?

I don't know if I'm thinking of the plot development consciously or if it's just flowing out of my head. I think of the direction for myself, and the characters talk to me as I'm writing the story.

You wrote about being surprised you made it past volume 2 and later 3. Can you elaborate on why you found this unexpected?

I never thought my manga would have any appeal to the general public. Of course, for every manga, there's someone out there who will appreciate it, but I never really thought to apply that thinking to myself. I was really surprised that I'd get to do more than two volumes.

You’ve now traveled to France, Germany, and the US promoting your manga. Have you noticed any differences in terms of what the fans interact with your work? What they enjoy or take away from it?

*Laughs* I get a lot of common questions.

You’ve mentioned a you were inspired by celtic mythology in which Sleigh Beggys are a type of fae. Does this mean Chise isn't human?

I think it's out in the States, but you could say she's kind of like a mutant. She's human, but not really. There are quite a few of them in the Magus Bride world, though they haven't been discovered. Chise can see all kinds of things, but most people can't, even though they are capable. Even if, say, they're attacked by something, it just looks like they died from a freak accident or from illness.

Frau Faust will soon be coming out in the United States. Are there any connections between the two stories or ways you feel Frau Faust contributed to The Ancient Magus Bride?

I’m so happy! They're completely unconnected, but since they both come out of the same factory, that is, me, the messages may be similar.

The Ancient Magus Bride is shonen but Frau Faust is josei. Were they meant for different audiences?

The Ancient Magus' Bride started out targeting the female audience more, but it has readers of all age groups and all genders. Faust is written for women, but I haven't really changed my position much in that regard.

Are there any other mangaka who you consider to be personal influences, either in general or specific to The Ancient Magus Bride?

There are quite a few. I think the one I discovered when I was little, and which has had an influence on me ever since, is Ashiarai Yashiki no Juunin Tachi by Tokuichi Minagi. I think it's had a strong impact on my work.

Why do you draw yourself as a rabbit?

A friend of mine once drew me as a rabbit, and I've been using that, but with a different design.

The best notes written in manuscripts by medieval monks

beggars-opera:

Colophon: a statement at the end of a book containing the scribe or owner’s name, date of completion, or bitching about how hard it is to write a book in the dark ages

  • Oh, my hand
  • The parchment is very hairy
  • Thank God it will soon be dark
  • St. Patrick of Armagh, deliver me from writing
  • Now I’ve written the whole thing; for Christ’s sake give me a drink
  • Oh d fuckin abbot
  • Massive hangover
  • Whoever translated these Gospels did a very poor job
  • Cursed be the pesty cat that urinated over this book during the night
  • If someone else would like such a handsome book, come and look me up in Paris, across from the Notre Dame cathedral
  • I shall remember, O Christ, that I am writing of Thee, because I am wrecked today
  • Do not reproach me concerning the letters, the ink is bad and the parchment scanty and the day is dark
  • 11 golden letters, 8 shilling each; 700 letters with double shafts, 7 shilling for each hundred; and 35 quires of text, each 16 leaves, at 3 shilling each. For such an amount I won’t write again
  • Here ends the second part of the title work of Brother Thomas Aquinas of the Dominican Order; very long, very verbose; and very tedious for the scribe; thank God, thank God, and again thank God
  • If anyone take away this book, let him die the death, let him be fried in a pan; let the falling sickness and fever seize him; let him be broken on the wheel, and hanged. Amen
