Gosho Aoyama's "Detective Conan" Manga Reaches Its 1,000th Chapter This Week

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

In the latest 37th/38th combined issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday released today in Japan, 54-year-old manga artist Gosho Aoyama's representative mystery manga series Meitantei Conan/Detective Conan (or Case Closed in some countries) reaches its memorial 1,000th chapter. It also becomes the first title to run for more than 1,000 chapters in the 58-year-old manga magazine. To commemorate the record, the issue opens with color pages of the chapter, which is the first time in three years for the manga.

Aoyama's most successful and internationally famous series has been serialized in the magazine since January 1994 and has released 93 tankobon volumes in Japan so far. As reported in April, his manga titles including Conan have printed over 200 million copies worldwide.

Japan Box Office: "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" Bombs, "Gintama" Continues Successful Run

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I, the live-action film adaptation of the fourth story arc of Hirohiko Araki's long-running JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga series, was finally released in 323 theaters across Japan on August 4. Despite the high anticipation based on the manga's strong popularity, the 56-year-old Takashi Miike-directed film earned a disappointing 166 million yen on 117,000 admissions and ranked only 5th in its first weekend box office.

The poor first weekend gross was only 30 percent of that of Gintama released three weeks ago, another live-action film adaptation of a popular Shonen Jump manga series. Unfortunately, but as expected, this is the third straight box office failure for director Miike on directing a live-action film based on a popular manga, following Terra Formars (2016) and Blade of the Immortal (2017).

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I was expected to be a box office hit,

considering the fact that it is based on Araki's very popular manga series and that the recent TV anime

adaptation of the same fourth arc was commercial and critical success in Japan. So what went wrong?

As the title suggests, the costly live-action film series has planned sequels, but judging from this opening

weekend result, the possibility is now doubtful.

Meanwhile, the live-action film adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's action comedy manga Gintama still

continues its successful run in Japan. It is confirmed that the Yuichi Fukuda-directed film has sold an

impressive two million tickets in 23 days since its release, which is the fastest record for a Japanese

live-action film released this year. It has made 2.73 billion yen so far, and is projected to make at least

3.5 billion yen from its domestic run and to become the top-grossing Japanese film of this summer.

They found a roundabout way to put Aegis in Dancing All Night. :)

Hopefully you're ready for more Persona rhythm action! Atlus has two in store for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, with Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night planned for a spring 2018 launch in Japan.

In the meantime, there's a teaser website and a promo for each:

"Rurouni Kenshin" Hokkaido Arc Manga Prepares To Launch

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc had been slated for an indefiite "summer" kick off in manga magazine Jump Sq. With this week's release of the September issue, that launch is getting pinned down. Nobuhiro Watsuki's hit historical action manga is back, picking up where the The Ex-Con Ashitaro spin-off left the wandering swordsman and his crew, with the October issue, out September 4th.

Speaking of Kenshin, Good Smile Company showed off Max Factory's 1/6th Scale Kenshin Himura at last weekend's Wonder Fest.

"Fate/Prototype - Fragments of Blue and Silver" Drama CD Adaptation Scheduled

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

When Fate/stay night was originally conceived by Kinoko Nasu in college, the protagonist was a young girl with glasses and Saber was a male. As the series became popular, and more iterations were developed, this was revisited as Fate/Prototype, featured in an OVA, released with the Carnival Phantasm spoofs, a drama with Comptiq magazine, and Fragments of Blue and Silver light novel series by Hikaru Sakurai and Nakahara. Their story is now being adapted into a series of 5 drama CDs, the first of which is due October 25th. With soundtrack, and novella, it goes for 4,536yen.
