Continuing in Japan's long-cherished tradition of making April Fools' Day gags out of things fans would actually want to see, Toei Animation's annual contribution to the April 1st festivities is a movie poster advertising a fictional team-up film that combines Dragon Ball Super and PreCure Super Stars!.

The poster teases a clash between Son Goku and Cure Yell and poses the question of which one is truly "super".

J-Novel Club Addition Explores Anime Writer Mari Okada's Past

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Mari Okada is a prolific anime screenwriter, with series composition credits that include the likes of Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, and Black Butler, among many others. The latest license from J-Novel Club is Okada's autobiography, so you can learn all about her rough rise in From Truant to Anime Screenwriter: My Path to "Anohana" and "The Anthem of the Heart".

A free preview is now available on j-novel.club, and the eBook will go on sale in early May.

Description:

From Truant to Anime Screenwriter: My Path to “Anohana” and “The Anthem of the Heart” by Mari Okada, Illustrations by Masayoshi Tanaka

From the writer of “Anohana: The Flower We Saw Saw That Day” and “The Anthem of the Heart” comes the next expressive tale of the fight against one's own demons.

Mari Okada grew up in rural Chichibu, a truant for most of her adolescent life. She observed school life from afar, often refusing to leave the confines of her room. But with the fateful encounter of a visiting school teacher, Okada was able to find her way through the echelons of school using her untapped skill of turning words on a page into a unique voice that truly captured the essence of one's own youthful spirit.

From her own personal desires to leave home and find a place in “the world outside”, Okada came face-to-face with her own anxiety and let her stories speak out on her behalf of her struggles to truly find peace with the world around her.

“From Truant to Anime Screenwriter: My Path to ‘Anohana’ and ‘The Anthem of the Heart’” is a gripping autobiography that details the not-so-successful life of one of anime's biggest screenwriters as she faces the hardest challenge of all: finding herself through her own works.

"Rise of the Red Comet" is Confirmed to The Last Episode of "Gundam: The Origin" Anime Project

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The official website for the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin anime series announced today on March 28 that the anime project will conclude with "Tanjou, Akai Suisei/Rise of The Red Comet," the upcoming second episode of its two-part "Battle of Loum" arc.

With the announcement, the site also thanks to the fans for their support, "This remarkable development would have never happened without passionate support from longtime loyal fans such as yourselves. We deeply appreciate your backing. Please enjoy the last episode, "Rise of the Red Comet," which will be released theatrically on Saturday, May 5th."

The anime adaptation is based on the original Gundam character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's Gundam: The Origin manga, which was inspired by the first Gundam TV series in 1979-1980. The final sixth episode will get theatrical screenings in select 35 theaters across Japan from May 5, 2018,

for a limited time of four weeks. Then its DVD/Blu-ray will be released on July 13.

Back in August 2017, Yasuhiko reportedly expressed his desire to animate more stories from his Gundam

The Origin manga, focusing on the main part of the One Year War story. And fans expected it would be a

remake of the TV anime first series in his own style. But the possibility is now officially denied.

"Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin" anime episodes:

  1. "Aoi Hitomi no Casval/Blue Eyed Casval" (February 28, 2015)
  2. "Kanashimino Artesia/Artesia's Sorrow" (October 31, 2015
  3. "Akatsuki no Houki/Dawn of Rebellion" (May 21, 2016)
  4. "Unmei no Zen'ya/Eve of Destiny" (November 19, 2016)
  5. "Gekitotsu Loum Kaisen/Clash at Loum" (September 2, 2017)
  6. "Tanjou, Akai Suisei/Rise of the Red Comet" May 5, 2018)

Popuko and Pipimi Are Not Upset in "Batman Ninja" TV CM

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Popuko and Pipimi, the small girl / tall girl combo from the riotous "crappy manga / crappy TV anime" Pop Team Epic, are continuing their respective roles as Batman and The Joker in a short but punchy TV commercial collaboration with Batman Ninja, an upcoming 3DCG anime theatrical film that transports the Dark Knight to Sengoku Era Japan.

Confused? Click here to see Crunchyroll's reporting on the genesis of the collaboration. In the commercial, Popuko / Batman is voiced by Kōichi Yamadera, while Pipimi / The Joker is voiced by Wataru Takagi. Yamadera and Takagi also provide the voices for the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime in the Batman Ninja film.

In Batman Ninja, Batman and his allies find themselves transported back in time to the Warring States Period in feudal Japan, where Batman's nemesis, the Joker, has usurped the place of the warlord Oda Nobunaga in an effort to re-write history.

Batman Ninja is directed by Jumpei Mizusaki and features animation by Kamikaze Douga and YAMATOWORKS. The film hits theaters in Japan on June 15, 2018, but the theaters are not upset.

MAPPA Picks Up the Pieces in "Dororo" TV Anime

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

MAPPA and Tezuka Production are teaming up to create a TV anime adaptation of Dororo, an unfinished historical fantasy manga by Osamu Tezuka about a young man who must defeat 48 demons to reclaim the parts of his body that were stolen from him as an infant.

Aside from the key visual and the teaser trailer above, not many details have been revealed about the new production, although an official website and Twitter feed (@dororo_anime) have been published. Although the exact release date has not yet been revealed, the Dororo TV anime will be digitally distributed worldwide via Amazon Prime Video.

The original Dororo manga was serialized from 1967 - 1968 in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday and Akita Shoten's Bōken'ō manga magazines, and English language version is available from Vertical, Inc..

Set in Japan during the Sengoku ("Warring States") Period, the story of Dororo follows Hyakkimaru, a young man whose warlord father sacrificed the infant Hyakkimaru to 48 demons in exchange for temporal power. However, Hyakkimaru survived the ordeal, and with the help of a prosthetic body and the aid of a young thief named Dororo, Hyakkimaru travels the war-torn lands of Japan defeating demons and slaying yokai in a quest to get his original body back.

Dororo has previously been adapted into a 1969 TV anime with direction by Gisaburō Sugii and animation by Mushi Productions as well as a 2007 live-action film with direction by Akihiko Shiota. The TV anime is published on DVD in North America from Discotek Media, while the live-action film was published on DVD in North America from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
