There's a New Episode of "Pop Team Epic" Coming. BECAUSE OF YOU.

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Remember that Pop Team Epic collaboration with JRA we mentioned a while back? The one where you could make your own Popukos and Pipimis? The one where, once they hit one million fan-made avatars, a mysterious "something" would be unlocked?

Well, you did it. You went and unlocked a whole new episode of Pop Team Epic.

Once the number of fan-made avatars passed 1 million, the Umabi website announced that Pop Team Epic would be back for a new online episode. What will that entail? We don't know yet, but we're guessing it will continue the JRA collab and have something to do with racing. Or it might not. When it comes to this show, we've learned not to take anything for granted.

Of course, this also means anyhere from two to four new voice actors taking on the lead roles. Though if this episode is anything like the previous ones, we won't know who they are until the episode is underway.

More news about the special Pop Team Epic episode will come out -- we hope -- soon. In the meantime, you can check out the Popukos and Pipimis made by your fellow fans.

"Phantom Thief Jeanne" Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary with Refined Rosary Set

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary for Arina Tanemura's magical girl shoujo manga series Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne/Phantom Thief Jeanne, BANDAI SPIRITS will release a refined replica of Rosary, the protagonist Maron Kusakabe's transformation item, from its PROPLICA brand at the price of 12,960 yen (about 120 US dollars) in November 2018. The memorial item's main target are women in their 20s to 30s, who grew up with the manga and anime adaptation in their childhood.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was serialized in Shueisha's monthly shoujo manga magazine Ribon from its

February 1998 issue to July 2000 issue, and compiled in seven tankobon volumes, printing more than

five million copies in Japan. Its TV anime adaptation produced by Toei Animation was aired for 44 episodes

between February 1999 and January 2000.

The 1/1 scale replica of Rosary (180 mm) can play various voices of Maron, including her signature phrase

"Checkmate!," newly recorded by Maron's original voice cast in the anime, Houko Kuwashima. Its first

production lot also comes with five manga illustration sheets (148 mm x 105 mm), one of which is newly

drawn by the manga author herself for the memorial release.

"Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer" Continues Its Box Office Domination for Seven Consecutive Weeks

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Even after becoming the top-grossing film in the anime franchise, Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer has been showing no sign of slowing down. Easily beating four new major-release Japanese films, the 22nd Conan film remained #1 at the weekend box office for its seven straight weekend in a row since release on April 13. It has also become the most successful film of 2018 so far in Japan, surpassing Star Wars: The Last Jedi (7.4 billion yen).

In its seventh weekend, it still made an impressive 180 million yen from the 130,000 ticket sales, bringing its total domestic earnings to 7.56 billion yen (5.8 million admissions). The box office record of the film series will be continued to be renewed for a while.

The film's official Twitter thanks moviegoers for the box office record

Meanwhile, the live-action film adaptation of Jun Mayuzuki's love story manga Koi wa Ameagari no

Youni (Love is Like After the Rain) ranked 4th in its debut weekend with a not-so-impressive 120

million yen on 86,000 admission. It was only 56% of that of director Akira Nagai's previous film

Teiichi: Battle of Supreme High released in April 2017. Judging from the opening result, the Nana

Komatsu-starring film may be possible to earn around one billion yen by the end of its domestic run.

Yoshikitty Battles Aggretsuko in Sanrio Popularity Contest

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

It's no surprise that Aggrestuko, the day-jobbing red panda with her own Netflix series, is quickly gaining popularity among Sanrio fans. What the company wasn't expecting was the outpouring of support for X JAPAN crossover mascot Yoshikitty -- who is currently tied for third place in the company's annual popularity contest!

2018 marks the 33rd year that Sanrio has put their myriad characters to a vote, allowing fans to stump for their faves and find out which cute critter is currently the most popular. Cinnamoroll is currently leading the pack, followed closely behind by Pompompurin. But international votes have launched Yoshikitty, the first Sanrio character to be modeled on a real person, into the unexpected tie.

The character is a mashup of perennial favorite Hello Kitty and X JAPAN rocker Yoshiki -- whose major surgery and subsequent bounce-back has kept him even more in the public eye than usual.

A breakdown of international votes shows that Yoshikitty and Aggretsuko are consistently in the top three abroad, with looks in from Gudetama, Kuromi, the current first- and second-place champs, and Sanrio's interpretation of Cyan from SHOW BY ROCK!!

Voting is open until June 10 -- so whether Cinnamoroll takes the lead again this year or is dethroned is partially up to you!

GKIDS Licenses "Ronja, the Robber's Daughter" Anime Series

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

GKIDS has been on a roll when it comes to releasing Ghibli and Ghibli-adjacent properties. The latest addition to their U.S. lineup—Ronja, the Robber's Daughter—comes from director Goro Miyazaki and POLYGON PICTURES, who worked together with Ghibli on the 2014 anime series.

Ronja hit Amazon back in January, and international media news site World Screen reported on GKIDS' acquisition earlier this week. In addition to GKIDS in the U.S., Serious Lunch secured distribution deals for Ronja with UYoung Media in China and PTS in Taiwan. Production on a French version will soon be underway thanks to deals with companies in France, French Belgium, and French Switzerland.

Here's how Amazon describes the 26-episode series:

The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father's profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. Ronja struggles to balance the relationship with her family and the bond with her self-proclaimed brother Birk as she comes to understand the intricate issues of family and friendship and how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.

Vertical Announces "Kino's Journey" Manga and More at Anime Central

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Vertical Comics had a handful of announcements to make at this weekend's Anime Central, including its license of Iruka Shiomiya's manga adaptation of Keiichi Sigsawa's Kino's Journey light novels. The series should start coming out in English next summer.

Crunchyroll streamed the recent Kino's Journey -the Beautiful World- the Animated Series adaptation. Here's the synopsis:

"The world is not beautiful, therefore it is." A story about Kino, who travels around the world with nothing but guns for protection and the talking motorcycle Hermes. Kino travels to many mystical worlds, each with its unique customs and people, and learns about the world through their stories, at times conjuring humor and inspiration or other times piercing cynicism. However, Kino's own custom is to stay no longer than three days in every town without exception, as it is enough time to learn almost everything important about the place while still leaving time to explore new lands.

Among the other license announcements are Aki Irie's Go with the Clouds, North by Northwest, an Iceland-based mystery manga that's scheduled to come out in May 2019. The story centers on a 17-year-old's search for someone… oh, and he's also a detective with a talking car who's weak around women.

Vertical will also be releasing Keisuke Matsuoka's Sherlock Holmes and Hirodumi Ito novel next March, followed by omnibus collections of Tsutomu Nihei's Blame! and Knights of Sidonia Master's Edition in April. The Knights of Sidonia collections will have about three and a half volumes in each, adding up to seven omnibus volumes.

Cooking with Anime: Hitomi's Million Dollar Cocktail!

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Hinamatsuri is a masterpiece of an anime, and my favorite thing about it may be Hitomi, the middle school bartender. As unethical as this seems (and is), Hitomi has an entrancing charm about her when mixing drinks! I don't know what it is about her, but everything she makes seems like it'll be the best drink ever. But how can a middle school girl look so professional???

At first I thought that the magic was all in the drink recipe. After all, if you follow a recipe, you can't go wrong, right? She makes her teacher two drinks, but, to me, the Million Dollar cocktail looked the best, so that's what I went for. This cocktail was reportedly invented in Yokohama, Japan, in 1894, by Louis Eppinger. He also invented the famous Bamboo cocktail for his European clientele. Eppinger was a German man, dubbed by Japan Times as the father of bartending in Japan. According to the same article, the cocktail was thus named for an expensive ingredient at the time- an egg.

"An egg???", I hear you exclaim loudly, "You can't drink raw eggs! Think of the DISEASES!"

Yes, well, nonetheless, the Million Dollar cocktail uses egg whites. At the time the drink was invented, I'm sure they didn't care about "safety" or "bacteria" or trivial things like that. Nowadays, if you want to drink raw egg, you need to make sure the eggs have been pasteurized. Like pasteurizing milk, this process ensures any harmful bacteria is killed off in a low heating process before consumption. Pasteurizing eggs is pretty simple- heat eggs up in a pan of water to 140 F for 3 minutes. It heats the egg enough to kill bacteria, while not cooking the egg.

So, I compiled the ingredients and got shaking. The cocktail was good...it just didn't seem to have the same joie de vivre Hitomi's cocktail embodies. Where was I going wrong? Up till this point, I'd been serving it in a martini glass, renowned for its conical shape. But that wasn't quite right...perhaps it was in the glass.

Hitomi uses a Coupe cocktail glass, otherwise known as a Champagne Saucer. According to legend, it was developed to model the shape of a lady's breast, but practically speaking, this probably isn't true. It was created specifically for Champagne, which we all know is expensive, sparkly, and classy. If you want to drink something fancy, most people will go for Champagne. Serving the Million Dollar cocktail in such a glass would surely serve to elevate the overall feel of the drink. After all, Hitomi is a classy girl. Who needs a martini glass- boring, plain, a has-been in the cocktail world- when you can have a Champagne Saucer. Right? I was convinced. I immediately dispatched my first available minion to go purchase such a fine receptacle for the Million Dollar Cocktail. Thank you, World Market.

Finally, I was ready to try again. I had the recipe. I had the glass. Was I missing anything else? In a last minute review of the episode, I wondered if I'd maybe glossed over the most important thing of all. Hitomi, when crafting her cocktail has such a peace about her, such an elegance. Perhaps the perfect cocktail was less about what I was making and more about how I was making. No furious shaking, no obsessive straining- what if I just needed to relax a little and become one with the cocktail.

So, that's what I did. I quickly assembled the ingredients, tightened the lid, and started to shake. I thought only of sunny days, rolling green fields, and dandelion seeds. I poured the drink. I tried it.

It was *smooches fingers* perfect. Smooth, sweet, and a little fluffy in the mouth. Not sickly sweet, but rather sweet, tempered with the tang of the gin. The egg white creates the wonderful foamy texture, without hindering the taste. You must try this for yourself.

Assemble the ingredients, pick a mood to embody, and shake with every fiber of your being. What comes out of your cocktail shaker...well, that's up to your shaker, and what you are able to find in your very soul.

I hope you can try this recipe! Watch the video below for more step by step tips.

Ingredients for the Million Dollar Cocktail

-2 oz Gin
-1 oz Sweet or Dry Vermouth (I used dry, but sweet will increase the...sweetness of the cocktail. That makes sense.)
-1 oz Pineapple Juice
-1/4 oz Grenadine
-1/2 oz Pasteurized Egg White, room temperature

To Make the Million Dollar Cocktail

1. Place all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly, and then strain into a chilled glass.

The mere mention of a Cowboy Bebop collab cafe was enough to get our mouths watering -- and now, Animate Cafe and Good Smile have revealed the menu and goods for the big event. From what we can see, they definitely don't disappoint.

The food and drink offerings include pub-style soups, sandwiches, and snacks -- many themed to the show. Lunch and dinner versions of some dishes are available, and the dinner menu also offers simple snack plates to go with drinks. Just a few of the dishes on offer:

Mushroom Samba (Lunch Version): Grilled shiitake mushroom burger with mushroom and potato salad

Son-of-a-Gun Stew: Cream stew, ham salad, and baguette

Toys in the Attic: Crepe with coffee jelly and coffee ice cream

Teddy Bomber Parfait: Chocolate and vanilla ice cream, chocolate pudding, cornflakes, and popping candy

Of course, there's also a variety of drinks from the bar, renamed to suit the characters from the series:

Spike Spiegel: Old-Fashioned with mixed nuts and chocolate

Jet Black: Cowboy

Faye Valentine: Martini

Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV: Cinderella (non-alcoholic)

Coffee, tea, beer, and other mixed drinks will also be available.

The limited merchandise features the crew of the Bebop in their anniversary best, and includes acrylic standees, cork coasters, cocktail glasses, A4 trading posters, and an engrated Zippo lighter (set to be delivered in August).

And to ensure you get the perfect photo op, there are life-sized standees of the crew.

The cafe is now open and will run until June 10.

The Revolution Returns in New "Utena" Manga

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

This is not a drill, Utena fans -- they're back.

More than 20 years since Revolutionary Girl Utena first hit the pages and screens, artist Chiho Saito and writer/director Kunihiko Ikuhara have joined forces to write more of the story. The manga release coincides with Saito's 35th anniversary in the manga industry.

Released by Shogakukan's Flower Comics Alpha imprint, the story will run in three volumes: After the Revolution (released today in Japan), Beautiful Thorns, and The Eve of Their Revolution. The new story will revisit Utena and Anthy, as well as Touga, Saionji, Juri, and Miki. The books also include postscripts by the creators on the making of the original manga.

No overseas licensing information is yet available for After the Revolution.
