I’ve had travel on the brain lately. A few weeks ago, I re-watched one of my all-time travel favorites – An Idiot Abroad (Not for everyone, but it appeals to my dry sense of humor). I got stuck in a bit of a travel show spiral and it made me excited to hit the road. My travel wish list is growing longer with every one of these books. But for now, the books are less expensive than a plane ticket. Happy armchair travels!  -Amy

É usando tudo o que tem em mãos – brinquedos, placas de computadores, botões, miçangas e até dinheiro – que a artista argentina Elisa Insua cria as incríveis peças de sua série “La Generation“, inspirada na cultura pop.

O trabalho é composto de texturas, cores e formas que através de um mosaico, se transformam em um Darth Vader, um controle de Playstation, um sorvete tridimensional e até um logo icônico.

Por um período de tempo, observamos lentamente cada parte de uma das obras e nos encantamos. Demais, não?

I appreciate Zan’s choice to focus his concept around positivity and really dig the variety in his execution.

Não só a Gigante de Montain View, mas a Galeria Saatchi tamém está nessa. Ela e o Google irão escolher os melhores Gifs Animados em 6 categorias – Paisagem, Estilo de Vida, Ação, e outras três ainda não reveladas. E a idéia não é usar ferramentas profissionais, como o Photoshop, e sim uma ferramenta que faz parte do Google Plus, o Motion. Pra quem não sabe, essa é uma ferramenta que anima automaticamente uma sequencia de fotos carregada no G+.

A história dos Gifs já foi contada, e nós vimos que na época a sua maior revolução (na época) foi permitir o uso de até 265 cores em uma imagem. A animação é algo que começou a se tornar, realmente importante, com a popularização do Tumblr, e hoje é um dos principais atrativos do Google Plus, uma rede social que não ter muitos atrativos além dessas curtas imagens em movimento (mas tem, sério… é tri bom). E talvez, dentre tantos motivos para celebrar o Gif Animado, esse seja o principal motivador do concurso.

É bem fácil. Você precisa, primeiro, saber qual a categoria vigente. O prazo para duas delas já estão pertinho do fim, a terceira vai até 11 de março e as outras três ainda serão reveladas – sendo que o último dia para o envio de gifs é 1º de Abril.

Ontem, dia 14 de fevereiro, foi comemorado o Dia de São Valentim, também conhecido como Dia dos Namorados em vários países da América, Europa e Ásia. Uma artista nova-iorquina aproveitou a data para questionar a natureza comercial e consumista do Dia dos Namorados gringo. Com uma série bem-humorada e divertida, Annica Lydenberg criou pôsteres com um hand-lettering inspirado nas lojas de varejo. Com frases como “Beijos 1 dólar toda a noite” e “Abraços e beijos: compre 1 e ganhe o outro grátis”, Annica também espera atingir as pessoas de uma forma positiva.

“Para aqueles de nós que estão solteiros, estes pôsteres têm o objetivo de se inspirar nas estratégias de vendas destacando conjuntos de habilidades bem afiadas e a promessa de romance com um toque espirituoso. Para aqueles que estão em um relacionamento, estes cartazes poderão manter vivo o espírito”, diz. Você ainda pode conferir o processo de produção nesse vídeo.

“Fighter” is the best word to describe Lola Álvarez Bravo (1907–1993), one of Mexico’s first accomplished female photographers. Bravo was orphaned in childhood (father deceased, mother abandoned her), and was sent to live with her half brother’s family in Mexico City. It was in the capital that she later met her husband, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, who taught her the mechanics of photography. Though they shared photography equipment and opened a gallery together in their home (1927), Manuel was reportedly annoyed when Lola wanted to shoot her own film; she was supposed to be his assistant. When the couple separated in 1934, Bravo took her son with her and resolved to support him with her photography.

That was the beginning of an independent practice which spanned several decades.

While cataloging photographs for the Department of Education in the 1930s, Bravo got the chance to photograph the minister of education. This encounter led to a position as chief photographer for El Maestro Rural (The Rural Teacher), a progressive publication for teachers.

Besides her photojournalistic work, Bravo also shot portraiture, commercial work, and political photography. She experimented with photomontage, and sought to “elevate it to the realm of high art and view it as equivalent to muralism” (James Oles).

Bravo was working in an exciting time; the post-civil-war climate created an opportunity for experimentation in social structures. She also counted many talented artists among her contemporaries and friends: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, Maria Izquierdo, and David Alfaro Siquerios. Still, her career was not one without friction. Biographer Elizabeth Ferrer says of Bravo’s beginnings, “there were women artists, though women were not supposed to be working in the street but in the studio”.

“Work in the street” she did. Bravo was not one for stylized studio shots, but wandered with her camera, searching for poignant moments and arresting compositions. Her work balances an interest in the formal qualities of light and shadow against a need to capture life as it happened.

Bravo ran a gallery in Mexico City between 1951–1958, the first—and only—Mexican gallery to exhibit Frida Kahlo’s work as a solo show. Her own first solo exhibition was at the Museo Del Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) in 1964, and she continued showing work until failing eyesight got the best of her at the age of 79. Though overshadowed by fellow artists in the early days, Bravo’s work has also been honored in more than one retrospective.

Criado pelo designer Dohyuk Kwon, a Bloom Chips é um conceito de embalagem para facilitar o consumo das batatas chips que normalmente vem em embalagens cilindricas e que na maioria das vezes causa uma certa dificuldade em conseguir alcançar as batatas no final, principalmente para quem tem mãos grandes.

Helen Dealtry is Woking Girl Designs, a Brooklyn-based textile design studio; she partners with clients and sells her own line of products. Helen lends notable warmth to geometric designs, but her more classically “feminine” work (florals) has a bold charm to it, as well.

Mónica Muñoz is the Spanish designer behind the Moniquilla brand; her patterns appear on garments, accessories, stationery, and house wares (shop here). Mónica experiments with a range of styles, but her floaty watercolors are among her best work. Have to admit, though, I dig the slightly mom-ish application of floral illustrations below:

Harper Poe, aka Proud Mary, runs a business as attractive as her product line: Harper partners with international artisans whose cultures have influenced her aesthetic. Talk to Harper for five minutes, and it’s obvious that she whole-heartedly believes her fair-trade motto: “pride, not pity”. What I love about her clothing, pillows, and bags is that they seem simple, but there’s always some twist—like a graph-paper pattern in the brightest of reds.

Miki Fukuyama is the powerhouse behind Makumo textiles; her online shop features a full bounty of products in her graphic, illustrative style. This Fukuoka, Japan-based designer screenprints her textiles by hand, a process which reveals itself in her layered aesthetic.

Laura Slater also prints her designs by hand. Her work is refreshing because it does not rely on pattern for impact, but rather demonstrates an experimental approach. Laura’s process page is a real treat, and her tea towels (above, right) just might find their way into my home.

“Tivemos a ideia de transformar questionamentos irônicos em cartas online, principalmente porque Hans teve uma experiência ruim um dia e queria desabafar”, – diz Jared. “Então nós fizeram um site onde todos podem escrever para expressar anonimamente todas as suas frustrações e más experiências.”

O Chineasy é um livro ilustrado que associa imagens à caracteres para contar histórias e transformar o significado de determinada palavra em algo mais fácil de memorizar. Dá até pra repensar a possibilidade de aprender chinês. Ou não. rs!

I came across this week’s Badass Lady Creative in a well-timed article on suppressing the “apology reflex” and was amazed at how many tiny points of interest Julia packs into her drawings. The effect is not overwhelming, but instead creates layers of understanding: forest, then trees.

Many of Julia’s illustrations were drawn for the New York Times, but she has freelanced with a variety of international clients. She works primarily in Photoshop, but textures and a presence-of-hand style lend a warmth to her compositions. Here’s a few more favorites:

Emma Fick, a 22-year-old from Louisiana living in Serbia and teaching English on a Fulbright scholarship, has chosen an interesting and public way in which to chronicle her travels. Through sketches, illustrations and paintings, she’s sharing her experiences abroad on her “Snippets” Tumblr. The blog is dozens of diverse posts deep and has become a fascinating visual story to follow. Speaking of which, give Emma’s beautifully executed project a follow on Tumblr to keep up with all of her adventures.

Alex Westgate is a freelance illustrator and designer out of Toronto, ON. Though he’s only recently graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCADU), he has already worked with such clients as The BBC, The Royal Canadian Mint, AT&T and Western Union to name a few. I’ve admired some of Alex’s work around the internet for a while now, and his latest projects below will show you exactly why.

Book Jacket Design: S.E. Hinton

For his senior thesis project, Alex illustrated a series of book covers for three of S.E. Hinton’s coming of age novels. Even if nothing gold can stay, this series is a 24 karat take on the works of one of literature’s greats.

BBC Philharmonic: Journey Through Music

Alex had the chance to do some freelance illustration for the BBC Philharmonic’s annual children’s concert, Journey Through Music. If the concert’s music is as fun as Alex’s illustrations, this seems like an event that can bring out anybody’s joyful inner child.

The Erudite Alphabet

Another of Alex’s senior thesis projects, The Erudite Alphabet goes beyond the typical children’s alphabet book to include “the world of academia, craft, profession, and bizarre pseudoscience.” While the illustrations are beautiful in their own right, the true beauty of the book is that it serves as an educational tool for both children and parents alike, creating a satisfying experience for everyone. Alex’s simple and entertaining illustration work could inspire your young one to become the world’s next great nidologist!

Toda sexta-feira, Charlie tira 25 minutos do seu dia para desenhar algo criativo na porta do seu refrigerador.

Os desenhos são todos compilados em um Tumblr e muitos ficaram tão interessantes que acabaram virando camisetas. Legal, não?

Já ouviu falar em ferrofluido ou fluido magnético? A substância é um líquido que apresenta grande magnetização, já que é composta por partículas ferromagnéticas. Ele surgiu na década de 1960, de tentativas da NASA em criar combustíveis que pudessem ser controlados na ausência de gravidade.

Desde então, as técnicas de síntese se aperfeiçoaram e hoje se produz fluidos magnéticos das mais diferentes características, usados em diversas aplicações tecnológicas e biomédicas. Uma de suas particularidades é criar padrões bizarros que se parecem com a superfície da lua ou de um planeta distante e por causa disso, tem sido destaque em uma tonelada de vídeos e obras de arte, a maioria em preto e branco.

Pensando nisso, Fabian Oefner rompe com essa tradição monocromática e joga cores na mistura, criando a série fotográfica Millefiori. E mais uma vez nos surpreende. O resultado é simplesmente incrível!

I have recently discovered the art of British born Tim Etchells. His work spans many different media including neon, fiction and performance. In his CV/biography he says: 

My work is diverse, moving from a base in performance into visual art and fiction. Working across these different media and contexts seems to open up new possibilities and allows me to approach related ideas again by different routes, hoping to get closer to or maybe further away from the thematics and experiences that interest me - searching for a new perspective.

I haven't explored all his work as yet, but I am very taken with his neon pieces. His website describes them as 'miniature narratives'.

Timothy Goodman recently completed an impressive, permanent 60-foot wall installation for Airbnb, the culmination of almost three months of preliminary work and 10 days in-house. The team came to him with a blank canvas and the goal of illustrating their experiences together, and let Timothy get creative.

The first step was to conceptualize what the project would become, how it would look and how it would function. And once the decision was made to utilize the building’s unused plywood as the canvas, the process entailed creating multiple renderings to determine the sizing to use, the composition of the pieces on the wall and how the pieces would be hung.

Once the structure and layout was determined the fun part began— exploring what the individual drawings would actually be. Timothy had the Airbnb team write down hundreds of their “moments” and then went through that text and picked things to illustrate. They then went back and forth on revisions until all of the drawings were approved before any installation took place.

Back in April, I was asked to come up with ideas for creating a permanent 60-foot wall installation in the dining hall of Airbnb’s amazing new offices located in San Francisco. After an intensive discovery of ideas and execution options, we took plywood that was used for the construction of the new building and cut and painted 115 pieces in varying sizes. From there, I worked with an art hanger to securely hang all the plywood on the wall. Finally, I hand drew over 115 “moments” that represent internal experiences that employees have shared together over the years.

What an amazing creative opportunity! I love that the end result has a huge impact on the space from a distance, but reveals personal and meaningful moments when you get up close.

Imagine a seguinte cena: você está prestes a entrar em uma igreja em São Francisco (EUA), uma loja da Louis Vuitton no Japão e um lugar em Madrid construído em 1887 para receber espécies da fauna e da flora da Filipinas. O que esperar de diferente?

Nada muito fora do comum, certo? Até ser surpreendido com diversas cores que trazem uma experiência incrível. Os exemplos abaixo receberam instalações inusitadas que encheram os olhos dos visitantes de cor! Dá só uma olhada:

Entre na Grace Cathedral em São Francisco e não queira sair nunca mais. A igreja recebe até o final de Fevereiro, uma instalação de aproximadamente 33Km de fitas de cetim coloridas em cascata, presas ao teto. A Graced With Light é criação da artista Anne Patterson, que teve a ideia ao se inspirar nas cores dos vitrais locais. Foram meses de preparação e 8 dias de muito trabalho para deixar tudo pendurado. Além disso, a obra conta com música e projeção de vídeo, tudo para conectar os visitantes com o céu e a terra, já que as fitas carregam orações, sonhos e desejos. Entrar na loja da Louis Vuitton em Shinjuku (Japão) não tem mais como objetivo principal comprar bolsas. O lustre construído pelo artista contemporâneo coreano Do Ho Suh ganha toda a atenção dos clientes. Chamado de Cause and Effect, é feito com 42.000 figuras de resina acrílica que formam diferentes tons de laranja. Lindo! Mais fotos aqui.

Por último, não menos importante, temos o Palácio de Cristal em Madrid, construído em 1887 para receber as espécies da fauna e da flora da Filipinas, mas que hoje é utilizado para exposições de arte na cidade. Um espectro brilhante de cores se forma e toma conta do local como um arco-íris. To Breathe – A Mirror Woman do artista Kimsooja foi construída em 2006 com espelhos, vidros e difração da luz. Além da experiência visual, há uma gravação sonora de uma respiração, que progride em diferentes ritmos para que os visitantes experimentem variados sentimentos. Demais, não? Mais fotos aqui.

Matt Crump enxerga o Texas com outros olhos. O estado em que mora nos Estados Unidos, associado com cavalos, chapéus e muitas fazendas, acabou virando uma tela em branco para suas fotografias minimalistas e coloridas.

Além de ter postar imagens que nos lembram doces em seu Instagram, o diretor de arte e designer acabou criando o projeto Candy Minimal para compartilhar outros perfis que enchem os nossos olhos de cor! Lindo, não? Adoramos! Vale a pena seguir!

Despite my best efforts, today’s No-Buy Gift Guide got away from me. So on Monday I will post all of my favorite no-buy, last-minute DIY ideas. Things practically anyone can make, do or cobble together with their own two hands to celebrate friends and loved ones for the holidays. I always love the idea of doing something sweet for someone rather than buying them something, so hopefully this guide will come in handy for anyone still stumped on gifts and looking to avoid the insanity that is retail shopping the last few days before Christmas.

To provide some visual relaxation and respite from holiday stress, I wanted to end this week with a little something special from artist Jee Young Lee. Jee transforms her studio space into incredible dreamscapes that feel as if they’re made digitally, but are actually made from paper and everyday materials. In her hands, paint and paper are turned into magical plants, underwater creatures and all sorts of beautiful spaces that seem like the perfect escape from a stressful work day. I found these images so inspiring, just watching them makes me feel relaxed. I hope they’ll be as inspiring and calming for you as they were for me this afternoon.
