6 Theories on Why Apple's OS X Mavericks Is Free

by Neha Prakash

Apple shocked fanboys and girls on Tuesday, after announcing that its new desktop operating system, OS X Mavericks, would be available for free

Yes, you heard us right. That's zero, zip, zilch dollars. So what's the catch?

In this Sunday comic, Nitrozac and Snaggy of The Joy of Tech wonder why Apple would ever just give away software, free of charge. It's got to be some NSA-related trick, right?

Let's look at Tropes Vs. Fat Guys in Videogames

by Benny Disco

[Dtoid community blogger Benny Disco takes a look at another common gaming trope. Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon (who is also fat)]

After reading Jonathan Holmes' fascinating analysis of prevalent features in black male characters, I decided to do a similar one on another minority: fat guys.

In modern society, overweight people are regarded as abnormal, freakish, lazy, and even diseased as the phrase "obesity epidemic" has taken over the news media. It's come to the point where "fat acceptance" is a thing. People think that fat acceptance encourages people to be overweight, but they're wrong. It's mainly just about people trying to feel human again, and trying to enter into modern society without feeling ashamed every time someone glances in their direction.

I think this idea that fat people are different from "normal" people has manifested itself in videogames through a collection of overused tropes, which is the main reason I chose this topic.

Nearly two in five children have used a tablet or smartphone before they could speak in full sentences, according to a new report.

Conducted by family advocacy organization Common Sense Media, the study found that 38% of children under the age of 2 have used a mobile device for playing games, watching videos or other media-related purposes. In 2011, only 10% had.

By the age of 8, 72% of children have used a smartphone, tablet or similar device

"This is the true sign that the digital generation has arrived," Common Sense Media's founder and CEO Jim Steyer told Mashable. Read more...

There are many people who frown upon the tradition of Halloween. Kids begging for tooth-rotting candy have given the holiday a bad rap

But you can't deny the good that Halloween has done for the world, especially literacy rates

In this comic, Josh Mecouch of Formal Sweatpants points out that horror-filled storybooks have encouraged kids to read — even if the material of choice is a tad questionable

Paradise Lost: First Contact makes you an unprecedented discovery

by Thomas Schulenberg
Paradise Lost First Contact makes you an unprecedented discovery

If you've ever wanted to break out of a test tube as a telekinetic alien lifeform that can peel parts of itself off and lob them as poison gas grenades, Paradise Lost: First Contact might be your thing.

The action-adventure-in-progress will be a pixelated, side-scrolling crawl through a space station as an escaped lifeform. Luckily, this lifeform has a skill wheel and makes short work of its captive cylinder. Equipped with both offense and puzzle-oriented abilities, the trailer displays the alien's aptitude at solving puzzles by spawning and mind-controlling smaller versions of itself. A separate power seems dedicated to shielding the lifeform from danger, allowing it to pass through jets of fire or stand tall against streams of bullets.

Paradise Lost's Steam page notes that the game is in an "early stage of development" and that the project is "coming soon" to Kickstarter. The project was initially planned for PC, but Linux and Mac versions have also been announced in response to requests from those interested in the project.

[Thanks, Enol!]

Sh*t Nerds Never Say: 'It's Just a Video Game'

by Neha Prakash

If you've ever wanted to impersonate a nerd, here's what not to say

YouTuber Bill Scurry went to nerd mecca New York Comic Con to create "S—- Nerds Would Never Say." It includes gems such as "At the end of the day, it's just a video game" and "Peter Jackson's a great filmmaker."

And, yes, we know — the "S—- People Say" viral-video trend has been done to death, but there's something about this nerd version (probably the costumes) that makes it worthwhile to watch

He was born in the darkness. He was thrown out of the League of Shadows. He is pure evil. And now he has a Vine account.

Introducing: BaneDad.

BaneDad, played by New York-based comedian Anthony Apruzzese, is a response to BatDad. The Caped Crusader daddy found online fame for posting six-second videos with his children while wearing a Batman mask.

While BatDad's videos offer helpful advice and guidance to his family, BaneDad's are the opposite. He promotes chaos and fulfilling Ra's al Ghul's destiny.

Sea Lion Snatches Fish out Fisherman's Hands

by John Farrier

(Video Link)

Mike “The Griz” Ritz runs Adventures South of the Border, a deep sea fishing guide business in Baja California. Here he is with Pacho, a local fisherman, showing off their catches. A sea lion erupts from the water, snatches Pacho’s fish and escapes.

The sea bird (a pelican?) seems remarkably blasé about it, considering it was within inches of the action.

Probably Archery mixes QWOP-style controls with a deadly weapon

by Sophie Prell
Probably Archery is inspired by QWOP and Surgeon Simulator, and will probably not teach you archery
Move over, William Tell and Robin Hood, there's a new legendary archer in town. Or there will be, when you master the QWOP-like controls of Probably Archery, which require you to independently manipulate your avatar's wrists, elbows, shoulders, and of course, their bow and arrows.

Originally an entry for the 7 Day FPS Game Jam, Probably Archery is aiming for a Steam release, and is up for voting on Greenlight. A free demo available for PC, Mac and Linux features eight scenarios to experience, including shooting an arrow to cut a hangman's rope, shooting arrows in zero gravity, and shooting arrows at apple-headed berserkers. Because archery. The game features native support for the Oculus Rift and multiplayer modes as well.

If you pre-order Probably Archery through the game's official site, you'll get instant access to new demo versions as they become available, and will receive a Steam key should the Greenlight campaign be successful.

FBI Seized 144,000 Bitcoins ($28.5 Million) From Silk Road Bust

by Soulskill
SonicSpike writes "An FBI official notes that the bureau has located and seized a collection of 144,000 bitcoins, the largest seizure of that cryptocurrency ever, worth close to $28.5 million at current exchange rates. It believes that the stash belonged to Ross Ulbricht, the 29-year-old who allegedly created and managed the Silk Road, the popular anonymous drug-selling site that was taken offline by the Department of Justice after Ulbricht was arrested earlier this month and charged with engaging in a drug trafficking and money laundering conspiracy as well as computer hacking and attempted murder-for-hire. The FBI official wouldn't say how the agency had determined that the Bitcoin 'wallet' — a collection of Bitcoins at a single address in the Bitcoin network — belonged to Ulbricht, but it was sure they were his. 'This is his wallet,' said the FBI official. 'We seized this from DPR,' the official added, referring to the pseudonym 'the Dread Pirate Roberts,' which prosecutors say Ulbricht allegedly used while running the Silk Road."
