U.S. will run out of avocados in three weeks if Trump follows through on threat to close border

Jim Paull

Haha, the end of the world.

Donald Trump is threatening to close the border with Mexico, which would certainly show what disastrous ideas Donald Trump has. One key example: If he did close the border, the U.S. would run out of avocados in three weeks, Reuters reports.

Because, hey, surprise, “Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico, according to the latest data from the United States Department of Agriculture.” California does grow some avocados, but they’re not in season there yet, and the eventual crop won’t be enough to replace those avocados from Mexico.

Not only that, but the U.S. does export quite a lot to Mexico, including a lot of corn, soybeans, and meats, so U.S. farmers would take a hit.

Why you should use fish sauce for more than just stir-frys

by Kate Bernot on The Takeout, shared by Virginia K. Smith to Lifehacker

Popcorn damn it.

Next to the toasted sesame oil, gochujang, and mirin, my pantry has contained a bottle of fish sauce for years. It arrived there when I cooked some Southeast Asian stir-fry recipe that called for it, but then I mostly forgot the bottle as it shuffled further into the pantry recesses. I can admit when I’ve made…

Second charge for Filipino tourist who strolled naked in KL

by Bernama

Hahahaha now a "public" can have its modesty insulted. Don't tell "religion" or it'll want subcategories too.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Filipino tourist who was captured on video strolling naked in the city last week has been slapped with a further charge of insulting the modesty of the public.

Kent Caburnay Acuin, 29, who was charged with indecent behaviour in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday, also pleaded not guilty to the new charge.

He was accused of insulting the public’s modesty at Jalan Sultan Ismail here at 10.40am on March 13 by climbing naked onto a car.

The charge was made under Section 509 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment of up to five years, a fine or both upon conviction.

The prosecution, conducted by deputy public prosecutor B Rajdeep Singh, did not offer bail as Acuin, who was unrepresented, is a foreigner and does not have a Malaysian bailor.

Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman set April 22 for mention.

Yesterday, Acuin, from Cebu in the Philippines, pleaded not guilty to indecent behaviour by climbing onto a car while naked at the same time and date.

The charge was made under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which provides a maximum fine of RM100 upon conviction.

Tombot, the fluffy robot therapy dog that can keep seniors company

Tombot reaches Kickstarter goal for its realistic companion Puppies. (AFP Relaxnews pic)

A couple of weeks before its funding deadline on Kickstarter, the robot golden retriever therapy dog Tombot has reached its US$20,000 goal; as early as August of 2020, Tombot puppies will be providing seniors with company across the world.

As technology becomes more lifelike thanks to machine learning and artificial intelligence, sentient robots are being developed that focus more on human companionship rather than task-oriented performance.

Animal bots like Sony’s Aibo and Groove X’s Lovot were both developed to keep people company as their primary function, though the former is slowly gaining more practical capabilities like home monitoring.

Recently, a new robot companion whose artistic design was made by Muppet puppet creator Jim Henson’s Creature Shop just reached its funding goal on Kickstarter weeks before its deadline: the Tombot Puppy.

This golden retriever is designed to “emulate live animal appearance and behaviours, providing ongoing fun, happiness, and emotional support,” primarily to seniors and those who cannot have a real pet of their own.

The companion has been designed to relieve loneliness, reduce anxiety, and provide people with a subject of emotional attachment and, according to Tombot, these, “Puppies are an invaluable tool for increasing social engagement in the senior, and for redirecting ‘challenging’ behaviours.”

Not only do the robots look and act similarly to real dogs, but also, they respond accordingly to how they’re being touched and where just like Aibo pups do; however, Tombot Puppies only rest in a lying position with their heads up while the Sony iteration walks around and comes to you when called.

At US$449 per robot, these pups cost less than a quarter of both Aibo and Lovot companion robots. If all goes according to Tombot’s plan, shipments of the first litter will begin in March of 2020.

Petronas to start offering oil products from new refinery in April

by Reuters
The Pengerang Integrated Complex, jointly owned by Saudi Aramco and Petronas, is expected to start up by late March. (Reuters pic)

HOUSTON: Malaysia’s state energy firm Petronas expects to start offering oil products from its new refining-petrochemical complex in April as the project moves toward full commercial production in October, a senior company official said.

The initial products would not meet commercial specification yet as trial runs are still underway, Arif Mahmood, Petronas’ executive vice president and CEO of downstream, said on the sidelines of the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston.

“We see the project as something that will be needed to complement growth in the region,” he told the conference earlier.

The US$27 billion Pengerang Integrated Complex was completed in five years, Arif said. Petronas and Saudi Aramco jointly own the refining complex which has a capacity of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Petronas’ refining capacity will reach 700,000 bpd after including its equity stake in the Pengerang complex, while its petrochemical production will grow to 14.6 million tonnes per year (tpy) from 12.7 million tpy currently, he said.

The petrochemical complex is expected to start up by late March.

Fuel production from the new refinery will balance Malaysia’s gasoline supply and demand, and will allow it to export diesel from the new refinery, Arif said.

The company also is prepared to do “a lot more blending” of oil to meet demand for low-sulphur oil from shippers when new fuel regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) start in 2020, he said.

“For IMO, we’ll do a lot more blending and we’ll see where the shipping industry goes. We’re encouraging people to convert to LNG (liquefied natural gas),” Arif said.

He expects ships to start looking for low-sulphur fuel from October.

Petronas will continue to produce high-sulphur fuel oil at its Engen refinery in South Africa, he said.

“We’ll find demand in some markets and we’ll blend,” Arif said, adding that Petronas could also tap its heavy sweet crude production in South Sudan and Chad to blend with fuels.

These Are All the Airlines and Countries That Have Grounded the 737 MAX

by Emily McNutt

Since the fatal crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on Sunday, several airlines and countries around the world have taken to grounding the Boeing 737 MAX.

While investigations of both crashes are still ongoing, many have compared the similarities between the October 2018 Lion Air crash, which killed all 189 people on board, and the most recent incident. While no US carriers have taken action, and the Federal Aviation Administration hasn’t directed airlines to ground the newest version of the 737, about 30% of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft around the globe have been grounded.

Here are all of the airlines that operate some variation of the 737 MAX, and the status of their fleet:

In the near-immediate aftermath of Sunday’s crash, Ethiopian Airlines and Indonesia — the location of the Lion Air crash — were the first two entities to ground the 737 MAX aircraft. Since then, China, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and the United Kingdom have issued directives, barring the 737 MAX from either entering their airspace or taking off from or landing at any of their airports.

In addition to the country-specific groundings, some airlines on their own have grounded their 737 MAX aircraft. Specifically those are Ethiopian Airlines, Norwegian Air, GOL, SilkAir, Royal Air Maroc and Cayman Airways.

It’s worth noting that the 737 MAX aircraft is different from 737 of the -700, -800 or -900 and previous variants, which are the most widely sold airplanes in commercial aviation history.  Check out how to tell if you’re flying the MAX, while also being able to spot the MAX from its predecessors.

How to Style Short Straight Hair

Short, straight hair can easily be styled to look cute, edgy, sophisticated, or neat with a little practice. There are plenty of different ways to style a pixie cut, including tucking it back, blow drying it forward, or creating a fauxhawk. Similarly, you can tie back or add curls to a bob to create a variety of different looks. Accessories and products are all part of the fun of styling your hair, so play around with hairspray, dye, or headbands to find a look you love!

EditSteps

EditExperimenting with Different Pixie Cut Looks

  1. Blow dry your pixie cut forward for a fun, messy style. Start with freshly washed hair that's still damp. Place a dollop of volumizing mousse onto your fingertips and run it back through your hair. Blow dry your hair forward so that it brushes your forehead. Use your fingertips to ruffle the hair on your crown to create a bit of volume.[1]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 1.jpg
    • Alternatively, use a spray bottle to make your hair damp.
  2. Sweep your pixie cut back for a sleek look. Start with damp hair and create a side parting to the right or left side of your head. Comb your hair out from the parting and use a blow dryer to sweep your hair back from your forehead. Add small amount of a styling paste or gel to your roots to give your hair a light lift.[2]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 2.jpg
    • Avoid adding too much product, as this can weigh your hair down and create a slicked back look. Aim for a light, tufty look.[3]
  3. Create a small fauxhawk for a fun, edgy style. Begin with damp hair and run through a dollop of volumizing mousse to give it a lift. Draw your fingers through the hair on your crown so that it sticks up slightly. Use a blowdryer to sweep your hair up and off your head.[4]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 3.jpg
    • Keep the hair on the sides of your head neatly combed down.
    • Add a small flower or a headband to your fauxhawk to help it stand out even more.[5]
  4. Try a shorter pixie cut for a retro look. Get your pixie cut trimmed so that it doesn’t go past your ears. Ask for a few subtle layers to give it volume and texture. Keep this look trimmed regularly, as it will grow out fast![6]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 4.jpg
    • Very short, retro pixie cuts look great with large hoop earrings.
  5. Tuck your pixie cut behind your ear to keep it out of your face. Create a side parting and sweep the longer side of your hair behind your ear. This look is for longer or overgrown pixie cuts and it's both practical and cute!
Style Short Straight Hair Step 5.jpg
    • If your hair won’t stay in place, use a bobby pin to help it stay tucked in.[7]

EditTrying out Bob Hairstyles

  1. Get a classic bob for a sophisticated, short hairstyle. Trim your bob regularly to keep it angular and the length between your earlobes and shoulders. Use a side parting and comb your hair away from this to create a sleek look. Tuck each side behind your ears.[8]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 6.jpg
  2. Choose a half up half down style for a relaxed look. Part your hair from ear to ear and gather the top half of your hair on the crown of your head. Tie an elastic around it to create a quick ponytail. Alternatively, twist the top half of your hair into a bun and use an elastic to keep it secure.[9]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 7.jpg
    • Either leave the bottom half of your hair natural or brush through it with a round brush while it’s damp to keep it tidy.[10]
  3. Tie your bob up in a low ponytail for a neat, casual look. Gather your hair close to the base of your head, around earlobe-height. Run your fingers through it to get rid of any tangles or kinks. Remove 3-4 small sections of hair from the top of your forehead and let these loosely hang to frame your face. Wrap an elastic around the ponytail to keep it secure.[11]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 8.jpg
    • This is a great hairstyle for when you are short on time, as it only takes around 10 seconds.
  4. Add light curls to your bob for a messy, carefree style. Mist your hair with a heat protectant product to help prevent heat damage. Then, use a curling iron or wrap small sections of hair around a straightener to add some volume. Frame each side of your face with soft curls and work your way around your hair, adding a few light curls to each side.[12]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 9.jpg
  5. Try an asymmetrical bob for an edgy look. The sharp angles help to frame your face and define your features. Keep the length between your earlobes and chin. Asymmetrical bobs go well with bold, dark hair tones.[13]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 10.jpg
    • To soften the look, try adding a small curl to end of the longer section which frames your face. This makes the bob more relaxed.[14]

EditUsing Products and Accessories

  1. Use hairspray to flatten flyaways. Short hairstyles look best with little to no frizz. Apply it to your wet hair and then style it with a comb. Use plenty, as the alcohol in hairspray makes it evaporate fast.[15]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 11.jpg
    • Alternatively, use a spray gel. You can find these at hair product stores or online. Both hairspray and spray gels are great for reducing frizz, however, spray gels don't have the same crunchy feeling that hairsprays do.
  2. Shape your hairstyle with pomade to give it texture and shine. Spread a dime-sized dollop of pomade over your fingertips. Run it through your hair from the back to the front to prevent build up at your hairline.[16]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 12.jpg
    • Comb your hair to style it after adding the pomade.
  3. Wear simple or statement earrings with your short, straight hair. Show off your favorite earrings with your short and sleek hairstyle. Try small studs for a simple, cute look or bold, extravagant drop earrings for a look that stands out.[17]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 13.jpg
  4. Wear a headband to keep your pixie cut in place. Pixie cuts are great hairstyles but can easily get messy throughout the day. Use a floral or jeweled elastic headband to tame your pixie cut and keep your bangs in place.[18]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 14.jpg
  5. Choose a bold color for a fun, edgy look. Short, straight hair looks great in bold, bright tones. Try blue ombre or blonde highlights for a cropped or pixie style.[19]
Style Short Straight Hair Step 15.jpg
    • If you have bangs with your short hairstyle, adding a few bright blue or red highlights will also look good.[20]

EditTips

  • Get your hair trimmed regularly to keep it short and looking neat.

With just one bite, it was clear to me why so many people love the orange chicken from Panda Express. Between the crispy chicken and the thick, sweet, lightly spiced blanket of sauce, it's pretty irresistible. But this at-home version is even better than the original.

Bite-sized pieces of chicken are cooked until crispy, then coated with a sticky-sweet citrusy sauce with just a hint of heat. It's everything you love and expect, without the greasiness that so often comes with takeout.

Sully, HW Bush’s dog, starts new job with wounded US service members, veterans

Awwwww

WASHINGTON: Lifting his thick paw to shake, former President George HW Bush’s service dog took an oath to serve at Walter Reed National Medical Centre on Wednesday, embarking on a new job helping disabled American veterans and active-duty service members.

Sully HW Bush became famous as canine caretaker and constant companion to the 41st US president in the final stages of his life.

In the Capitol rotunda after Bush’s death in 2018, Sully faithfully laid down beside Bush’s casket.

In his new role as a hospital “foreman” in a Walter Reed facility outside Washington, Sully’s duties are to provide support, comfort and cheer to wounded veterans, their families and facility staff, thus reducing stress and increasing positive feelings, the medical centre said.

“Sully will go on to spread his love at Walter Reed Hospital. He was a loving companion when my Gampy needed him most,” Jenna Bush Hager, Bush’s granddaughter, posted on Twitter on Thursday.

The yellow Labrador is one of seven dogs working at the facility in Bethesda, Maryland.

Collectively, they “average 2,500 contacts and over 200 working hours per month,” according to the medical centre.

He is about 2-1/2 years old, according to America’s Vetdogs, the organization that trained him.

During the ceremony, which was posted in a video on Facebook, Sully prompted laughter from the audience when he raised his head and dipped his chest to stretch before taking his oath to care for veterans “without any promise of treats or tummy rubs.”

Afterwards, he was fitted with a “military uniform,” a new vest he will wear while working.

Sully was named after Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who landed a US Airways passenger jet in the Hudson River after both engines lost thrust when the aircraft struck a flock of geese while taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
