Michael Kors Pulling Back On Department Store Presence In Effort To Polish Brand’s Image

by Mary Beth Quirk

Yet another designer brand has decided to pull back on its department store presence in an attempt to polish up its image in the eyes of consumers and boost flagging sales. Michael Kors announced it will no longer accept coupons for its merchandise sold in department stores, and will be pulling back from that category in general come next year.

After reporting a 7% dip in its wholesale business — department stores — during the first quarter, Michael Kors CEO John Idol said that starting in February 2017, the brand won’t participate in department stores’ “friends and family sales,” as well as nixing coupons, CNBC reports. It will also continue to cut back on how much merchandise it ships to department stores, a process that’s already underway.

Deep discounts have led consumers to think that the brand is worth less than it is, Idol says, which has led to dips in revenue and profit margins in both department stores and standalone retail locations.

“It’s creating confusion in the consumers’ mind relative to the value of the Michael Kors brand when it’s being seen so often on sale in so many different places,” Idol said. “We have to correct something that we think is actually having a negative long-term effect for the brand.”

Michael Kors has also been hit by the same decrease in tourist traffic that’s beleaguering Kate Spade and Abercrombie & Fitch. Also this week, Coach announced it’d be pulling back from department stores as well, with plans to close 250 of its wholesale locations.

MUAR: The Johor government, through Perbadanan Islam Johor Holdings, is committed to developing the Taman Perbadanan Islam project in order to balance the population in urban areas.

Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that 70% of homes to be built in the project would be classified as Malay reserve, while the remaining 30% would be open to all.

“The project is called ‘Taman Perbadanan Islam’ because we want to balance the Malay population in urban areas in line with the state government’s policy that the Malays must live in urban areas because all facilities were available there.

“If the Malays continue residing in rural areas, they will not benefit from the development, including in terms of quality of life and education,” he said after officiating the ground breaking ceremony for the Taman Perbadanan Islam Maharani project here yesterday afternoon.

Under the project, PIJ Holding would build a total of 548 houses, to be completed in stages by 2020.

Teen ‘happy’ with limelight over Dino pouch craze

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

What a feel good story.

dompet-rm45

PETALING JAYA: It took less than 24 hours for all 200 units of the “Denim Pouch-Dino Blue Black”, seen carried by the wife of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, to be sold out.

The hype surrounding the S$14.80 (RM45) purse after Ho Ching was seen clutching it during an official visit to the White House with her husband earlier this week, is the reason behind the sudden popularity of the product, the Straits Times reported.

A spokesman for The Art Faculty at Singapore’s Pathlight School for autistic children and youth, said that it typically takes about four months for as many units to be sold off.

A message on the store’s website states that orders for the purse that were made after all 200 units in stock had been sold, will only be fulfilled in the next two months.

The sudden interest in the artwork sold by The Art Faculty has also thrust the creative mind behind the image of dinosaurs on the pouch, 19-year-old autistic teenager See Toh Sheng Jie, into the limelight, according to the Singapore daily.

His taxi driver father See Toh, said the family was “shocked and amazed” by the reception towards his son’s artwork after news reports started circulating. The teen’s mother, Wendy Chua, 52, is also “extremely proud” of her son.

His father said Sheng Jie is “happy” after being shown media reports on the purse, and about his art being displayed in the US after becoming a hit in Singapore, but he was unable to fully understand the significance of it.

The teen had been fascinated with dinosaurs since he was three, and began sculpting models of dinosaurs using Blu-Tack, after watching the Disney animated movie “Dinosaurs”, his father told Straits Times.

He also thoroughly read on the prehistoric creatures from reference books during trips to the library and now translates his passion into detailed drawings and notes in his many sketchbooks.

Sheng Jie’s parents are now looking forward to meeting Ho, to thank her in person.

Ho, who is also the CEO of Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings, was seen clutching the purse while she and Lee were welcomed by US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, to the White House on an official visit earlier this week.

Ho, who is also the patron of the Autism Association Singapore, reportedly bought the purse at a concert last Saturday to raise funds for autism support services.

The Straits Times also reported that The Art Faculty pays its students royalties when their products are sold.

National issues won’t influence rural voters, say analysts

by Sheith Khidhir Bin Abu Bakar
Jim Paull

And there you have it.

jeniri

PETALING JAYA: National issues do not resonate well with voters in rural areas, according to political analyst Jeniri Amir.

Speaking to FMT, Jeniri said harping on national issues, such as 1MDB and the recent US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) suits, would not help garner votes for Opposition parties as it was hard for those living in rural areas to grasp how these issues could affect their everyday lives.

“They’re more interested in bread and butter issues as these are closer to their heart,” he said, adding that talking about issues such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would prove more effective.

He said rural voters were getting fed up with hearing the same issues being repeatedly voiced by the Opposition and that it had been proven to be ineffective.

“You’re not going to convince them. It didn’t work in the Sarawak state election and it didn’t work in the Sg Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections either.”

On the other hand, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said it was not impossible to make rural voters understand the gravity of these national issues, but that the media had an important role to play.

“The problem is that the mainstream media is not covering these issues,” he told FMT.

“It all depends on whether news can be disseminated properly and in a language that shows that these national issues are relevant to them.”

He, however, conceded that persuading rural voters wouldn’t be easy as often conspiracy propaganda regarding the West would get in the way.

“It’s going to be challenging. Too many people are persuaded by Western conspiracy against Muslims and no matter how stupid it is, it’s not easy to defeat.”

Meanwhile, political analyst Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said based on surveys during the Sg Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, they found that rural voters were, in fact, thankful to Prime Minister Najib Razak and that the policies he had put in place after he took over administration had grabbed their attention more than national issues.

“I’m sorry to say this, but national issues will not hold sway over the rural voters,” he told FMT.

“Based on surveys made, we found that rural voters are happy with the prime minister’s policies, including the introduction of BR1M (The 1Malaysia People’s Aid), and bringing computers to the rural areas. They realise that the former premiers (Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) didn’t do this when they were in power.”

Last April, Najib was reported as saying that the government would implement a programme to supply laptops to fifth formers sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination in Sarawak.

“National issues may hold ground in Selangor, Penang and certain areas of Johor, but not in the rural areas. Even in Kedah, they’re more concerned about Mukhriz being sacked than the DoJ suits or 1MDB,” said Awang.

He disagreed with Jeniri’s statement that talking about GST would be more effective.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin as saying that there would be no issue in explaining the DoJ’s suits to Umno grassroots members in his constituency when they hold their divisional meeting on Aug 28.

“This is the beauty of my Kinabatangan: the people here don’t want to know all the claims made outside (of their constituency). They want to know what the government of the day can give them,” he said.

Recently, FMT reported that Parti Keadilan Rakyat had begun the initiative to explain to the people, both inside and outside urban areas, the “complicated issues” regarding 1MDB.

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin had also expressed his willingness to support the initiative.

Man charged with rape escapes jail, marries 14-year-old victim

by Reuters
Jim Paull

Just like you said last night about the plane guy. So sad.

Ahmad Syukri Yusuf

JAKARTA: A Malaysian man charged with raping a 14-year-old girl has avoided prison after he married her in a case that has sparked anger from rights groups and calls for a ban on child marriage and justice for victims of sexual violence.

Ahmad Syukri Yusuf, 22, was charged with statutory rape of the girl late last year and faced up to 30 years in jail and whipping for the offense, but he later married the teenager under Islamic law, according to prosecutor Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid.

The prosecutor said a court in Kuching, in Malaysia’s eastern state of Sarawak ruled there was no need to proceed with the case after Ahmad Syukri submitted a marriage certificate and the girl withdrew the complaint.

Delivered last week, the court ruling prompted fury from women’s rights groups.

“It is very common for rapists to marry their survivors, especially when they are underage, to cover up their crime,” Kuala Lumpur-based Women’s Aid Organisation spokeswoman Tan Heang Lee told Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“There is usually a high risk in this kind of cases that these girls will be subject to a lifetime of sexual abuse. Her marriage is basically an extension to rape,” she added.

Under Malaysia’s civil laws, the legal minimum age for marriage is 18 but Muslim girls who are under 16 can obtain permission to marry from Islamic courts.

Ethnic Malays, who are Muslim, make up about 60 per cent of the country’s 30 million population.

There are about 16,000 girls in Malaysia who were married before their 15th birthday, according to Human Rights Watch citing the latest available government statistics in 2010.

Globally, 15 million girls are married before the age of 18 each year according to campaign group Girls Not Brides.

Ann Teo, vice-president of the Kuching-based Sarawak Women for Women Society, said accused rapists should be prevented from marrying their victims.

“It sends a message a person will be freed from his charge if he enters into this kind of marriage of convenience with the girl,” Teo said.

Is marrying the rapist to the victim the Malaysian way?

by FMT

kahwin-paksa

By Dr Amar Singh HSS

The recent judicial decision in East Malaysia seems to have escaped the attention of some media outlets. Another rapist married his child victim and was allowed to get away with the sexual abuse in court. The Borneo Post Statutory rape case accused discharged as he married victim carried the distressing account of a 28 year old man who clearly took advantage of a 14 year old child and was freed by the court. The report states the judge’s decision was “Since the complainant and the victim of the subject matter of this case wish to withdraw the complaint against the accused on the ground that she is now married to him, there is no necessity to proceed further with this case. “Therefore the accused is discharged not amounting to acquittal.”

It’s amazing that, despite the outcry from many on previous such instances, our legal system continues to favour the rapist and not the victim. This decision by our legal system, in ruling in support of a rapist and sex abuser needs to be reviewed. Our systems must not continue to fail children.

Under the Penal Code this girl is under 16 years of age and it is obviously statutory rape; which means there is no defence. The judge would be required by law to rule in favour of the victim and punish this rapist. If withdrawal of a police report makes this difficult the Child Act could be used. Under the Child Act this person is under 18 and sexually abused. The Child Act is a mandatory reporting system, which means that withdrawing the police report is meaningless. The Welfare, Health and Police departments are mandated by law to take action. And the judge can rule in favour of the victim against the perpetrator.

I wonder who it is that allowed this marriage to take place. That authority also needs to be investigated by the Welfare Department for aiding and abetting sexual abuse.

I hope the Welfare Department will act immediately to rescue this child under the Child Act. She requires urgent and sustained emotional and psychological support and counselling. Her parents are also obviously not supporting her rights and needs.

Often the legal profession suggests that the rest of us are poor at understanding the law. But we know justice and injustice when we see it. We have witnessed a number of rulings that concern us. From adults who put fingers in the vagina of children being let off, to the continual abuse of children by marrying them to adults. The child in this situation will now have to live with her rapist.

The legal system must regain some sense of decorum and earn back the respect of the public.

We look to the legal system to protect children not harm them.

Man charged with sexually touching sleeping Virgin America passenger

by Reuters
Jim Paull

Of course he's from India.

virgin-americaNEW JERSEY: A male Virgin America passenger has been criminally charged with sexually touching a sleeping female passenger on an overnight flight to Newark, New Jersey from Los Angeles last week, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Veerabhadrarao Kunam, 58, of Visakhapatnam, India, was charged with one count of abusive sexual conduct aboard Flight 170 which departed on July 29, US Attorney Paul Fishman in New Jersey said.

Fishman said the defendant was arrested on July 30 when his flight arrived, and was released on US$50,000 bond following a Monday court appearance in Newark federal court.

Alexander Spiro, a lawyer at Brafman & Associates representing Kunam, declined to comment.

According to the complaint, Kunam was seated in an aisle seat when the victim, who was sleeping next to him in a middle seat, awoke to find his hands massaging her vagina and buttocks areas, and the defendant rubbing his bare feet against hers.

The woman then traded seats with her male travel companion, and Kunam offered to buy him a drink and told him he wanted everyone to forget about the incident, prosecutors said.

A member of the flight crew then moved Kunam to another seat, and the defendant said he would not touch the victim again, the complaint said.

Virgin America spokesman Dave Arnold said in a statement that the crew had been alerted to “reports of a disruptive individual” accused of inappropriate touching, moved the person, and told law enforcement, who were waiting for Flight 170 when it arrived.

The charge against Kunam carries a maximum two-year prison term and $250,000 fine.

Volcanic eruptions in Indonesia hit air travel

by AFP

volcanic-ashJAKARTA: Volcanic eruptions in Indonesia in recent days have forced the closure of two airports and disrupted some flights to the holiday island of Bali, officials said Wednesday.

Mount Gamala on the eastern island of Ternate erupted early Wednesday after a moderate earthquake in the area, sending ash up to 600 metres (1,900 feet) into the air and closing the island’s airport, said the national disaster agency.

“People are advised to stay calm,” said agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, adding that authorities were not yet planning evacuations.

The airport on Lombok was closed overnight from Monday to Tuesday due to a drifting ash cloud from erupting Mount Rinjani, causing the cancellation of 29 domestic and international flights to the resort island.

The airport on neighbouring Bali, which attracts millions of foreign visitors every year, remained open but several flights between Lombok and Bali were cancelled while a handful of services between Australia and Bali were also axed.

Mount Sinabung, a volcano on the western island of Sumatra which has been rumbling for some time, also erupted violently on Tuesday although its ash clouds did not disrupt any flights.

Indonesia, which sits on a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean, is home to around 130 active volcanoes. Eruptions regularly disrupt air travel around the archipelago.

Garuda Indonesia Reports $63.2 Mio USD Loss For The First Half Of 2016

by Sebastian Powell
Jim Paull

Conclusion

Garuda has a solid product and will eventually recover but it shows how thin the profit margins are. When you have 1.84 Billion$ in revenue and the profit is 29.3 Million that is really a drop in the bucket. And that’s during a good year. Of course national carriers serve another purpose than just making profit as they are the lifeline of the country to the world and provide a large amount of jobs. Those are just some reasons why these national carriers such as Malaysia Airlines or Thai Airways will always be kept alive even if they incur insane losses.

Indonesia flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has reported a loss of 63.2 Million USD for the first half year of operation in 2016.

Garuda 777The airline cites a strong domestic competition as a result for the negative result which came after the carrier reported a plus of almost 30 Mio USD for the same period last year.

Garuda went through a big quality improvement program that included the acquisition of new aircraft, a really good first class product and entering the SkyTeam Alliance.

The Jakarta Post (see here) reported about the press conference where the H1 results were published.

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia experienced US$63.2 million or around Rp 824 billion in losses in the first half of 2016, the company’s senior official said.

Garuda Indonesia president director Arif Wibowo said in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday that in the same period of last year, the company booked a net profit of Rp 392.6 billion ($29.3 million). The losses it suffered were triggered by tight competition in domestic flights, which led to a price war.

“What we have been facing in our domestic flights is a decline in yield, which reaches almost 10 percent compared to the previous year,” he said.

Arif further explained that although Garuda Indonesia’s passenger revenue per kilometer had increased by 9.8 percent, accompanied by a 19 percent increase in Citilink Indonesia’s passenger revenue and a 20 percent increase in the latter’s passenger capacity, all of these factors could not cover the big losses suffered by the company.

Meanwhile, Garuda’s total revenue reached $1.76 billion in the first semester of 2016, down by 4.1 percent from $1.84 billion in the same period of last year.

While losing money is never a good thing, a 63 Mio USD loss over two quarters is really not much in airline terms. Compare this with Malaysia Airlines which in 2014 incurred losses during the first nine months of the year that reached 1.3bn ringgit (340 Mio USD back then) before it delisted from the stock exchange.

Indonesian farmers launch class action over oil spill

by AFP
Jim Paull

PTTEP Australasia.

indo-seaweedSYDNEY: Indonesian seaweed farmers launched a Aus$200 million class action Wednesday over a major oil spill in Australia, claiming the blow-out devastated their livelihoods.

The spill in the Montara field in the Timor Sea, north of Australia, leaked thousands of barrels of oil for close to 10 weeks before it was capped.

The case filed in Sydney’s Federal Court on behalf of up to 13,000 Indonesian farmers is against the firm which operated the well-head platform, PTTEP Australasia.

Ben Slade, class actions principal at law firm Maurice Blackburn in Sydney, said the huge spill was still impacting farmers in the eastern Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur.

“If the company thought that this issue would go away because the farmers are Indonesians, or because they didn’t understand their legal rights, they were sorely mistaken,” he said in a statement.

indo-seaweed2“This case is a perfect example of how the Australian class action regime provides access to justice for people who would otherwise have no voice and no recourse against their corporate wrongdoer.”

An Australian government report found the spill was caused by shortcomings at PTTEP Australasia, a unit of Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production PCL.

PTTEP said it will defend the action, worth the equivalent of US$152 million, which it believes is misguided.

“The company has always accepted responsibility for the 2009 Montara incident,” it said in a statement, adding that modelling had concluded 98 percent of the oil had stayed in Australian waters.

PTTEP said comprehensive studies clearly showed “no lasting impact on the highly sensitive and biodiverse ecosystems in the areas closest to Indonesian waters”.

The leak, more than 200 kilometres (124 miles) off Australia’s northwest coast, was the worst the country has seen from an offshore oil platform.

Malaysia Airlines Enrich Secretly Discontinues 15% Online Award Booking Discount

by Sebastian Powell

It appears that without any major announcement Malaysia Airlines Enrich has discontinued a popular program feature, namely the 15% online booking discount for awards.

MAS EnrichThe removal of the online discount was not announced publicly but rather buried in the Enrich FAQ section of the website.

Enrich customers won’t like this change at all especially the fashion in which it was put to them. I can imagine many members don’t even know about the elimination of the discount feature until they are trying to use it next time.

Here is the FAQ in regards to the changes.

Download (PDF, 342KB)

These online booking discounts are popular and other airlines such as Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer also have it in place (at least for now). To prepare a bulletin 11 days before such a cutback leaves a bitter taste.

Conclusion

It’s not very nice to throw something like this at your members without adequate announcements and opportunity for people to do a last redemption with the 15% discount on top.

Unfortunately this is in line with many other decisions Malaysia Airlines has taken in the recent time that could hit customers like a cold shower. For example the airline has eliminated alcoholic beverages from short haul flights and is also known for cancelling lightly booked flights on the last minute, merging passengers with other flights (especially on frequent routes such as Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok).

EPF members can now invest overseas

by FMT Reporters

EPFPETALING JAYA: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has removed restrictions that had prevented members from making investments overseas.

According to a report by The Star Online, the latest move by EPF now allows its members to invest in unit trust funds fully invested overseas, a change from its previous restriction to unit trust funds with no more than 30% foreign exposure.

Members can now opt to invest in unit trust funds that are 100% invested overseas as long as EPF recognises these funds.

Members can invest using their savings in Account 1.

The EPF currently manages about RM680 billion of investment assets for 14.5 million members, of whom 6.7 million are active members.

It declared a dividend rate of 6.4 per cent for 2015 and 6.75 per cent for 2014.

Come January next year, the EPF will offer a fully syariah-compliant investment scheme, called Simpanan Syariah.

The EPF expects between 1.5 million and two million of its members to convert their savings to Simpanan Syariah during the first year of its launch.

In May, EPF chief executive officer Shahril Ridza Ridzuan was quoted as saying the fund has generally paid out higher dividends to its contributors compared with unit trusts.

“Only one out of five contributors who have withdrawn their money from the Employees Provident Fund to invest in unit trusts have enjoyed better returns than what the retirement fund would have given them.

“Contributors who opt to invest outside of EPF should have financial literacy,” Shahril was reported to have said.

He had also speculated that the dividend for 2016 is likely to be lower than this year’s 6.4 per cent.

“Equity returns this year will not be at the same level as last year. So, if you look at the contribution of equities, which provided 60 per cent of our income last year, it is now already down to 40 per cent.

“If this continues, our total gross income for 2016 will be less than 2015 and the dividend declared will be lower as well,” Shahril said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad wants all parties to cooperate and support one another in their fight against corruption in the country.

He said his appointment was an opportunity to continue serving the country.

“I will try my best to carry out the responsibility and implement anti-corruption efforts in Malaysia.

“I’m aware of the challenges and high expectations placed upon me,” he said in a statement here today.

Dzulkifli also thanked the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the government for their trust in him to lead the commission.

“In addition, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Abu Kassim Mohamed for his outstanding leadership (in having helmed the MACC) and great contribution to the commission and the country,” he said.

Dzulkifli, who was previously director of the National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team at the Attorney-General’s Chambers, takes over from Abu Kassim.

On Friday, Chief Secretary to the Government Ali Hamsa announced Dzulkifli’s appointment as new MACC chief commissioner, beginning Aug 1, until July 31, 2021.
