Woman in a fix after Bangladeshi husband flees with passports

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

Something is telling me she's not all that educated.

bangladesh-airport-woman-bag-1PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian woman was reportedly abandoned by her Bangladeshi husband at the Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport after the man went missing together with her passport.

Officer in charge of the Patenga police station Md Abdul Kashem told the Dhaka Tribune that Nur Sohafa, 45, was found wandering “aimlessly” around the airport.

“Immigration police took her aside for questioning and was told her passport had gone missing along with her husband,” Kashem told the paper.

According to the report, Sohafa was scheduled to return to Malaysia on June 30 after spending a month visiting the village of her husband, Md Lavlu, in Faridpur.

However, Lavlu disappeared from the airport together with Sohafa’s passport and other documents which he had been carrying.

Kashem said Sohafa did not know the address of Lavlu’s home in the village. He added that police were trying to locate Lavlu, and that Sohafa had been sent to court to seek directives regarding safe custody.

The couple have been married for five years.

Daily Kos Radio is LIVE at 9 AM ET!

by rss@dailykos.com (David Waldman)

Hey, we made it to Friday without seeing the Republican Medicaid destruction bill come to the floor.

On the other hand, Trump couldn’t make it to Friday without a major newspaper publishing yet more evidence of his team’s collusion with Russia

So, let’s set things up for the holiday weekend, and give ourselves a reason for some real fireworks!

Listen LIVE, right here at 9:00 AM ET!

Where else can you get live, unvarnished news, commentary and opinion from Daily Kos editors David Waldman, Greg Dworkin, Joan McCarter, and even Armando?

Well, sure, you could get that at Daily Kos. And this is Daily Kos.

But that doesn’t count, because reasons. Besides, reading is overrated! Except for what you’re reading right now, that is.

Don’t quit now! David Waldman and Greg Dworkin remind us we are in the middle of a life or death health care battle, and no where near the end. Call up those senators! Raise a ruckus at next week’s parades! Without a win, conservative media wanders away, because it’s about wins, not anything else. Donald now has better things to pay attention to, although he wasn’t ever really paying attention. The worse part of Obamacare for Republicans was the “Obama” part, really. Now they know they hit a wall, their bill is kryptonite, support is fabulously low, even with the base, even on Fox. New Gop fixes include bribing moderates, bribing wingnuts, and relying on the continued ignorance of Medicare recipients… maybe the Democrats are ready to negotiate? Topher Spiro has a bipartisan health care fix. Meanwhile, Republicans just want government to end, at least governing. Chaos is the Trump standard, here and abroad. America first is becoming America alone. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is pretty happy with ruining international relationships, but is not going to move in down the hall from some Russian mobsters! Is the press appeasing Trump? What methods will ever work? In GunFAIL: When a book miraculously stops a bullet in the movies, it’s a miracle… and it’s a movie. So don’t try that. Chinese passenger chucks coins into plane’s engine for luck

by AFP
Jim Paull

Better not happen on my flight.

China-Southern-Airlines-flight-CZ380SHANGHAI: A superstitious passenger delayed a flight from Shanghai for several hours Tuesday after throwing coins at the plane’s engine for good luck, Chinese officials said.

The elderly woman was detained by police at Shanghai Pudong International Airport following the bizarre incident, forcing nearly 150 passengers to be evacuated from the plane bound for Guangzhou in southern China.

The 80-year-old threw nine coins at an engine of China Southern Airlines flight CZ380 as she was boarding on the tarmac.

Eight of the coins missed their target but one nestled inside an engine, airport police said, adding that a passenger spotted her and reported it to authorities.

The elderly woman was travelling with her husband, daughter and son-in-law, Beijing Youth Daily said.

“A senior passenger threw coins to the plane’s engine and delayed the flight. The passenger involved has been taken away by police,” China Southern Airlines said in a statement on its Twitter-like Weibo account.

“In order to make sure the flight is safe, China Southern maintenance has conducted a full exam of the plane’s engine.”

The incident was soon trending on Weibo and police added in a statement: “After investigation the involved passenger surnamed Qiu said she threw the coins to pray for safety. According to Qiu’s neighbour, Qiu believes in Buddhism.

“The plane is boarding again for takeoff.”

Hundreds of thousands of Weibo users had a field day, with one commenting sarcastically: “Grandma, this is not a wish fountain with turtles.”

AirAsia boss backs pilot for suggesting prayer on tense flight

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

Sigh

Kamarudin-Meranun-1

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia Bhd chairman Kamarudin Meranun has defended the pilot of AirAsia X flight D7237 for asking passengers to pray during a tense period in the aborted journey on Sunday, saying that he would have done the same thing.

He said the pilot was calm and in control, and as a “believer” had asked everyone to pray with him as he guided the plane to safety.

“What is wrong with asking for prayers in whatever religion especially when you are in a tight position, seeking divine intervention while doing whatever humanely possible?” he said in a Facebook posting today.

“Making statements are always easy when you are safely on the ground. Such a situation will never be easy to manage,” he added.

Kamarudin said the pilot’s objective was clear in wanting to land the aircraft safely and ensure safety of all on board, which is what eventually happened.

“I would have done the same thing,” he said.

“As such, I stand by the pilot and his team, both as an individual (in) public and management/shareholder of AirAsia.”

DAP’s Zaid Ibrahim had yesterday criticised the pilot’s suggestion and for saying that he too would be praying in the hope that the plane lands safely.

“Good lord, I much prefer pilot don’t tell me death is imminent,” the former minister said in a posting on Twitter.

“Pilot has to give hope, and leave the rest to God and the passengers. If AirAsia are big into prayers; engage proper Imam and priest,” Zaid added.

The Airbus A330 with 359 passengers encountered technical difficulties shortly after take-off from Perth to Kuala Lumpur, but landed safely back at the Perth International Airport at 10am on Sunday,

Meanwhile a Facebook posting yesterday by a passenger named Madeline Wright which lauded the flight’s captain for his conduct during the emergency went viral.

“Our reassuring captain talked us through the whole situation and gave us every piece of information he had,” she said.

“The way we all cooperated and remained calm throughout the event made it easier for crew aboard to help us and for our captain to fly us to safety. No one screamed.”

“A technical problem like this could happen on any plane and Air Asia’s cheaper flights are not to blame,” she added.

“People should not be criticising Air Asia for missing anything – technical problems happen all the time, even on more expensive flights.”

She said criticisms against the captain for telling passengers to pray and attempts to get him fired were “disgusting”.

“He was professional. He was human. He was a reassuring voice during this event and gave us hope,” she said.

“He is the reason I am still alive and I cannot thank him enough.”

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has begun investigating the incident and said today that a report will be released within several months.

It added that as a result of an in flight engine fault, the aircraft was subjected to moderate airframe vibration and that the flight crew “elected to return to Perth”.

Lelaki rancang serang Masjidil Haram letupkan diri

Jim Paull

Stop waiting and push the button.

Lima militan disyaki, termasuk seorang wanita ditahan.

Obama on private holiday in Indonesia

by Bernama

obama-indonesiaJAKARTA: Former United States president Barack Obama flew into the resort island of Bali on Friday night on a family holiday trip to Indonesia.

Local online media quoted Bali police spokesman Hengky Widjaja as saying that Obama and his family came to the island in a private aircraft.

He said the visitors were staying at a leading hotel in Ubud and wanted to have a private holiday although security measures were akin to that accorded to a dignitary.

Obama and his family will reportedly be in Bali until June 28 before going to Yogyakarta and concluding their visit in Jakarta on July 2.

In Jakarta, the 44th president of the United States is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the 4th Congress of Indonesian Diaspora on July 1.

Dino Patti Djalal, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Indonesian Diaspora Network Global (IDNG), was quoted as saying that Obama’s address at the opening session of the congress would be his first official speech in Asia after retiring as the US president.

He said Obama had a special relationship with Indonesia and was an inspiration for the Indonesian community and diaspora.

The former US president had lived in Jakarta for four years, from 1967 to 1971, having accompanied his mother and stepfather to Indonesia.

He had even attended primary school in Jakarta prior to returning to Honolulu to live with his grandmother.

Meanwhile, presidential special staff for communication, Johan Budi Saptopribowo, said Indonesian President Joko Widodo would host a dinner for Obama at the Bogor Presidential Palace on June 30.

Friends taunt intoxicated boy, force him to dance

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

"Speaking in Tamil" at least they're not going to rob someone.

Friends-taunt-intoxicated-boy,-force-him-to-dancePETALING JAYA: A video of a group of boys in school uniforms taunting, laughing and holding on to their friend as they force him to dance despite his obviously intoxicated state, has gone viral over the Internet.

Uploaded yesterday evening on the Facebook page of Malaysian Tamilar Kural, the video, lasting 2.23-minutes long, shows eight boys mocking their friend, who is clearly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, in a secluded area.

A message accompanying the video reads: “School boy is believed under the influence of drugs. If there is any information regarding the school boy in this video, please inform the school, parents or the police to act, otherwise their lives will be useless and they will become drug addicts.”

Speaking in Tamil, the boys keep telling their friend to dance as two others in the group prop him up as he appears soft knee-ed and flaying his arms as he struggles to stand.

One of the boys propping him up says as he laughs, “He is dancing like one possessed”.

At this point, the boy recording the video says, “Jeeva, just let him go. Vicky, let him go. Let him dance as much as he wants.”

“Play that song. Let him dance. Pick up that bottle from the ground and give it to him. Let him hold it whiles he dances,” he added.

The boys are also heard shouting profanities at each other and they laugh and joke.

In one part of the video, the boy recording his friends, goes over to join the others, forcing his two friends to let go of the drunken boy. He tells them the drunk boy will be fine on his own.

The boy’s friends are however reluctant to, fearful that he would fall.

“If he falls, punch him in the stomach and he will sober up”, the other boy says.

At the time of writing, the video had been viewed over 26,000 times and shared by over 800 Facebook users.

97 people also left comments about the boys in the video, with many condemning them for their bullying antics and for being under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

Woman Successfully Sues El Al Over Seating Dispute With Jewish-Orthodox Passenger

by Sebastian Powell

A female El Al passenger in her 80s has successfully sued the airline in a Jerusalem court after flight attendants requested her to move seats after a Jewish-Orthodox passenger refused to sit next to her during a Newark bound flight.

The airline has been ordered by the court to change their policy and to no longer accommodate such outrageous requests by passengers.

Stories such as these have been making the rounds increasingly during the past few years. Male passengers who are extremely religious and refuse to sit next to women based on their belief that this would be immodest and their faith would be damaged.

An Israeli court has now put a stop to the matter as they ordered the national airline El Al to no longer accommodate requests of this nature.

The New York Times (access here) reported about it after the courts decision was handed down.

Israeli airline employees cannot ask women to change seats to spare a man from having to sit next to them, a Jerusalem court ruled on Wednesday, handing down a groundbreaking decision in a case brought by a woman in her 80s.

Strictly religious Jewish men who refuse to sit next to women, for fear of even inadvertent contact that could be considered immodest, are a growing phenomenon that has caused disruptions and flight delays around the world and prompted protests and social media campaigns. The pressure to switch seats can be particularly acute on El Al, Israel’s national airline. And the issue has become emblematic of a broader battle in Israel over religion and gender in public spaces.

The plaintiff in the lawsuit, Renee Rabinowitz, now 83, boarded El Al Flight 028, bound for Tel Aviv from Newark in December 2015. She had settled into her aisle seat in the business-class section when the passenger with the window seat showed up: an Orthodox man who complained about sitting next to a woman. A flight attendant asked her to change seats to accommodate him, and she gave in reluctantly.

She realized it is not a question of money; they awarded a very small sum. She realized it’s a matter of El Al changing its policy, which they have been ordered to do.”

Ms. Rabinowitz was represented in court by the Israel Religious Action Center, the public and legal advocacy arm of the Reform Movement in Israel, a liberal stream of Judaism. …

In discussions outside the courtroom, the two sides in the case agreed on a judgment proposed by the judge, declaring that it is forbidden for a crew member to ask a passenger to change seats at the request of another passenger based on gender. El Al agreed to tell its cabin staff in writing about the prohibition within 45 days, and to provide training in how to deal with such situations within six months.

These cases do not only happen on El Al but as the article mentions are a frequent occurrence on this particular carrier due to the high amount of Orthodox Jews in Israel. I think it’s important and great to see that this judgment comes from an Israeli court and a liberal action group in the country that helped the lady to bring her case.

Conclusion

No matter what people believe in, it’s completely unacceptable to push that belief on others and expect those around them to accommodate their outrageous requests when choosing a public transportation method such as an airplane or a bus.

It’s 2017 and these folks have to realize that their demands simply don’t fly anymore in civilized countries just as it’s forbidden to discriminate in other parts of daily life based on gender or race.

IKEA Investigating Reports Of Shiny Serving Bowls That Can Set Food On Fire

by Mary Beth Quirk
Jim Paull

Haha

These days, most products involved in sudden fires involve malfunctioning batteries, or poorly built fuel lines. But then there’s the IKEA bowl — and the flaming fruit contained therein — that serve as a reminder that you sometimes only really need the sun and the right shiny surface to start a fire.

A Swedish man told Aftonbladet (via The Local) that he was enjoying some grapes from his IKEA Blanda Blank metal bowl — which is also available here in the U.S. — outdoors over the weekend, when temperatures were heating up.

Then he smelled smoke, which was weird, because grapes are not particularly known for that flavor profile. He thought perhaps his neighbors were cooking on the grill, until he saw the fruit was on fire.

“‘How is that possible?’ I thought. Then I saw there was one intense point where (the sun) hit the twigs, and that’s where it started,” he told the Aftonbladet.

And to convince the non-believers out there, he repeated the trick with a piece of newspaper and posted the footage on Facebook:

IKEA tells Aftonbladet it will investigate and do some further testing on the bowls, while noting that “many different parameters would have to converge for the content of the bowl to overheat and that the risk for this to happen is very low.”

And if something in the bowl should catch fire, the dish’s round design “further contributes to a very low risk of spreading,” a spokesperson told the paper.

“We take this information very seriously and will now investigate what happened,” he added.

Cambodian eatery offers ‘Pol Pot’ rice porridge

by Reuters
Jim Paull

That's not right.

pol-pot-pot-pattoyPHNOM PENH: A Cambodian food stall began on Monday serving a thin, watery rice porridge that almost everyone had to eat during the 1970s rule of the Khmer Rouge, who were responsible for one of the worst genocides of the 20th century.

The owner of the small “Pol Pot regime porridge” shop in Siem Reap town said he wanted to offer the porridge as a reminder of the country’s dark past.

About 1.8 million people were killed during the 1975-1979 rule of Pol Pot’s ultra-communist Khmer Rouge, from torture, execution, disease and starvation after harvests failed.

Restaurant owner Tuon Tem, 49, said he lost nine relatives at that time and was offering the porridge to remind young people about how hard life was then.

“I had this idea to have young people, including my children, to know how hard it was,” Tuon Tem, who is also a captain in the army, told Reuters by telephone.

Tuon Tem said he offered two plates of porridge, a modern version with fish, vegetables and rice and the Khmer Rouge style, a thin gruel with salt on the side, all for $1.5.

Customer Chin Ka Moniroth, 26, was not impressed with the dish, though he said the restaurant might attract young people, wanting to try something new.

“It’s tasteless, it’s just water and salt,” Chin Ka Moniroth said.

Real victory will be in 5 years, says Macron camp after election win

Police were also not impressed with the restaurant, saying it could not use the name Pol Pot.

“He was a brutal killer,” Siem Reap police chief Ho Vanny told Reuters. “This is not appropriate.”

Tuon Tem said police had told him to remove the sign but he had not done so, not yet anyway.

Mufti warns Muslims, says firecrackers ‘haram’

by FMT Reporters
Jim Paull

Someone is going to have some explaining to do.

kelantan-muftiPETALING JAYA: Playing with material that is harmful to oneself or others is against the teachings of Islam, said a state mufti when calling for the banning of firecrackers.

Kelantan Mufti Mohamad Shukri Mohamad said there was also no basis for associating the playing of firecrackers with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, reported The Star.

His comments followed the many cases of injuries that have occurred, mainly involving children, due to them playing with firecrackers during Ramadan.

More than nine cases have been reported in the past three weeks, and that too in just three states, namely Kedah, Kelantan and Pahang.

Shukri said the whole industry behind the availability of firecrackers to the general public needs to be shunned by Muslims as it was illegal.

According to local laws, the manufacturing, selling and possessing of explosive firecrackers is an offence. However, fireworks in general are okay.

“Islam forbids its followers from breaking the country’s laws. So, in other words, it is ‘haram’ (sinful),” he told The Star.

Under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, anyone convicted of selling explosive materials without a permit faces up to seven years in jail and a fine of up to RM10,000.

Similarly, Section 4(2) of the same act stipulates that manufacturing, importing and possessing of firecrackers is also a punishable offence, that carries a maximum five-year jail term or RM10,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.

How to Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy

It can be hard to tell whether your workout routine is too easy. If you have a regular routine at the gym that you have been fairly consistent with, you should make sure it hasn’t gotten too easy. The first thing to do is figure out whether you are reaching at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate during each workout. You may also want to observe your level of focus on exercise versus socializing and take note of physical signs such as sweat, heavy breathing and hunger after workouts.[1]

EditSteps

EditUsing Goals, Time and Heart Rate

  1. Look at whether your routine is allowing you to reach your goals. You should take a hard look at whether your current workout routine is allowing you to reach your goals. You may have reached a plateau with your current workout routine if you are not seeing results within an expected timeframe and other factors like diet have remained consistent.[2]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 1.jpg
    • If you have reached a plateau with your weight loss goals, you could try breaking up your workout into two workouts a day. This will allow you to multiply the calorie burning benefits of exercise, since your heart rate will be increased twice in a day.[3]
  2. Count up the total hours in your weekly workout routine. Considering all of the workouts you do during the week, count up the number of hours that you put in. Guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend at least two and a half hours of activity per week. If you are not putting in at least two and a half hours, your workout routine may be too easy.[4]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 2.jpg
  3. Check your heart rate. You can manually check your heart rate with your index and middle finger. With one hand facing up, place your index and middle finger one inch below your wrist. Adjust your fingers until you can feel your pulse. Count the number of beats you feel for sixty seconds to get your beats per minute.[5]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 3.jpg
    • If you prefer, you can use a heart rate monitor. Place the strap of the heart rate monitor around your chest and look at the wristwatch/readout to see your current heart rate.[6]
  4. Figure out your maximum heart rate. You can figure out if your workout is too easy by observing whether your heart rate is too low. To figure this out, start by determining your maximum heart rate. A simple way to do this is to minus your age in years from 220.[7]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 4.jpg
    • If you are thirty years old, your maximum heart rate will be approximately 190.
    • If you are forty years old, your maximum heart rate would be 180.
  5. Reach at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate. You will know you are not working hard enough if you do not reach at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate.[8] Some physical trainers recommend aiming for a higher percentage of your maximum heart rate during workouts, such as 70 to 85 percent.[9] The percentage of your maximum heart rate you strive for will depend on your particular fitness goals, but you should observe your heart rate to make sure you are at least reaching sixty percent.[10]

    • If you are thirty years old, have a maximum heart rate of 190 and you want to maintain at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate, you should aim for a heart rate of 114 beats per minute. If it goes below that number, you should work a little harder.
    • If you are not reaching sixty percent, you could work harder by increasing the speed or incline on your treadmill. Run faster until you get to at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate and then continue for the rest of your workout.
    • If you are running outside, you could try running very fast for a minute and then going back to your regular pace. Repeat this process until you get to at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate. You could also try other forms of interval training at the gym.[11]
  6. Change your routine if your heart rate is staying low. If you have been doing the same routine for a while and you notice your heart rate is not reaching the same level as normal, it could be an indication that you need to switch your workout routine. Consider working a little harder or doing a new exercise to challenge your body in a new way. With your new routine, try to maintain at least sixty percent of your maximum heart rate.[12]

EditNoticing if Your Cardio Routine is Too Easy

  1. Notice if you are sweating. If you don’t have to wipe any sweat off your brow while on the treadmill or other cardio machine, your workout may be too easy. Increase the intensity of your cardiovascular workout until you begin to sweat.[13]

  2. See if you lose your breath at any point during the workout. Take a minute after your cardiovascular workout and observe your breath. If it is fairly deep and heavy, it is a good sign. If it doesn't feel any different than if you were sitting at your office desk, you may need to run or cycle harder.[14]

  3. Determine whether you spend more time socializing than exercising. The gym is a social place, which is great but can also distract you from your cardiovascular workout. The same thing can be said about other forms of cardiovascular exercise such as walking or jogging with friends. If you spend more time chatting with friends during your workout, it may have gotten too easy for you.[15]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 9.jpg
    • To figure out if this is the case, observe whether you can easily talk with a friend while working out. If you can put together a sentence easily while working out, you may not be pushing yourself hard enough.[16]
  4. Reflect on whether you focus too much on the entertainment. If you find yourself focusing on your book, magazine or television show more than your cardiovascular workout, your workout may be too easy. Look away from the television or magazine for a minute and check your heart rate. If it is below sixty percent of your maximum heart rate, you may not be pushing yourself enough.[17]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 10.jpg
  5. Do high intensity interval training. If your cardio workout is getting way too easy, you may benefit from a new, less boring form of exercise called high intensity interval training or HIIT. Whether you are on the treadmill, bike or swimming, push yourself very hard for between thirty and ninety seconds. Then, go slow for twice that length of time. Then, bring the intensity back up again for another thirty to ninety seconds. Repeat the process for twenty or thirty minutes for a good cardio workout.[18]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 11.jpg
    • If you do HIIT training and it is getting easy, start reducing the rest period between periods of intensity. Keep reducing the period of rest until half of your workout is at a very high intensity and the other half is at a low intensity.[19]

EditFiguring Out Whether Your Weight Training is Too Easy

  1. Observe whether the last few repetitions are hard. If you are strength training and the last few repetitions of your set are not difficult, your workout may be too easy. For instance, if you are doing three sets of 6-8 repetitions on a bench press, it should be very hard to complete the last few repetitions on your second and third set. If it is easy, it is a sign that your body has become more efficient with the exercise routine and is burning less calories to complete the same movement. To increase your strength, you need to increase the weight on the bench press or other weighted exercise. Try adding 2.5, 5 or even 10 lbs, depending on how you are feeling.[20]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 12.jpg
    • If you add a lot of weight, get somebody to spot you.
  2. Take notes on your strength training routine. After each exercise, take notes about the difficulty of completing the lifts, as well as whether you were able to complete them in good form. The next time you do a workout, check your notes to see whether a particular strength training exercise was previously completed in good form and to determine an appropriate weight.[21]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 13.jpg
    • If you did the exercise seamlessly last time, you should add more weight. Add 2.5, 5 or 10 lbs, depending on how you are feeling. If you add a lot of weight, get somebody to spot you.
    • If you were unable to complete the exercise in good form previously, do it again at a similar or lower weight until you have perfect form.
  3. Notice if you feel hungry after a workout. Your body needs protein and other nutrients to repair muscle tissue. However, if you are not pushing yourself hard enough in your weight routine, you may not get your usual hunger pangs after a workout.[22]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 14.jpg
  4. See if you feel sore. If you are not pushing yourself hard enough to experience some muscle fatigue after lifting weights, your body may have adapted too much to your workout routine. Try incorporating different movements and exercises into your daily and weekly routine. For instance, try a new group strength training class or get tips from a personal trainer on how to mix up your routine.[23]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 15.jpg
    • If you normally do a flat bench press, try doing an incline bench press.
    • If you normally use machines for strength training, try using more free weights.
  5. Consider whether you have been doing the same routine for too long. Although a consistent strength training routine is very important for tracking your progress, you need to change things up once in a while. The reason is that your body eventually adapts so well to a routine that it is no longer challenging and the fitness benefits diminish. If you have been doing the same strength training routine for two months, you should definitely try to switch things up or try a new exercise.[24]
Know if Your Workout Is Too Easy Step 16.jpg
    • Fitness trainers recommend switching your routine every six to eight weeks.
    • If you don’t want to switch your whole routine, you could change part of it. For example, you could add a new exercise in the middle of your routine and keep the end of your routine the same.

Navy Federal Go Rewards Cards Offering Summer Sign-Up Bonus Worth $200

by Richard Kerr
Jim Paull

Hmmm

Popular amongst service members and veterans from all branches, Navy Federal Credit Union has announced a limited-time summer bonus on the Navy Federal Go Rewards credit cards, available in both Visa Signature and MasterCard flavors. Let’s take a look at the cards’ features and decide if the product is something you should consider adding to your rewards portfolio over the next few months.

Navy Federal Eligibility

Even though the credit union boasts the name of the greatest branch of service, Navy Federal Credit Union is not only open to the Navy. If you’ve ever been affiliated with any branch of the armed forces including the Coast Guard or worked for the DoD, you and your family within one generation of you are eligible for membership. Membership is free, and you simply have to fill out an online application.

Go Rewards Credit Cards

In June and July, the NavyFed Go Rewards credit cards are offering 20,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 in the first 90 days of cardmembership. There are Visa Signature and MasterCard versions — both offer the same features. Important to note: Your credit line upon approval must be at least $5,000 to qualify for these cards otherwise you will receive the Visa Go Rewards Card or Platinum MasterCard, which have different features than the Visa Signature and MasterCard versions.

The cards earn 3 points at restaurants, 2 points on gas and 1 point on all other spend with no limit on the number of points you can earn or the number of points you can redeem. Points are worth a flat 1 cent each when redeemed toward cash back or travel. You can begin redeeming once you have 1,000 points, and your rewards will expire four years from the date they are earned.

Perhaps best, the cards have no annual fee, no foreign transactions fees and no balance transfer fees.

Analysis

The one benefit the Go Rewards Visa Signature and MasterCard offer that make them stand out is a $200 (20,000-point) sign-up bonus for no annual fee. The 3x and 2x reward multipliers are nice, but I’d likely be using my Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve on those expenses to earn more valuable Ultimate Rewards compared to the flat 1% cash back Go Rewards currency. That said, not everyone can qualify for premium cards given the average American’s credit portfolio.

Navy Federal says only “good” credit is required to be approved for these cards, making them a great stepping stone into the points and miles world while avoiding fees. If you’re on your way to building up your credit and want essentially a no-cost mechanism to earn rewards, the Go Rewards cards can make sense for you. Ensure you pay off your balance every month.

$200 cash bonuses go straight to cover food costs on my trips.

Other rewards cards with no annual fee include the Discover it Miles Travel Card, the Wells Fargo Visa Signature Card, the Chase Freedom and the Chase Freedom Unlimited. However, none of those options match the no foreign transaction, no balance transfer fee and $200 sign-up bonus of the Go Rewards cards.

Bottom Line

If you’re eligible to join Navy Federal Credit Union, this card represents an easy $200 bonus with no annual fee. This card makes sense to me as I try and build my portfolio with NavyFed to become eligible and targeted for some of its other banking services, which often come much cheaper than the products big national banks offer. I also like diversifying the banks I open credit with and not repeatedly opening credit with only the largest two or three.

I also don’t mind putting another $200 in the pockets of my wife and I. This will cover many of our incidental expenses on trips, making the vacation as close to free as possible. Navy Federal has done a lot to help many of my sailors and Marines over the years, so I’m happy to give it more business.

What are your thoughts on the Go Rewards cards?

Bullies are not born, they are raised

by FMT

Ko-Teik-Yen

By Ko Teik Yen

We all feel sad, angry and sympathise with victims of bullying and their families.

While those targeted by bullying deserve an abundance of support and encouragement, it’s about time we take a deeper look at the root of the problem, and for parents as well as society at large to be more accountable for their actions.

We have a group of young people bullying others, and in the case of 18-year-old T Nhaveen, they resorted to extreme and senseless violence that cost him his life.

What made the bullies arrive at such a state of mind and resort to such violent behaviour? What about their upbringing and the community they lived in?

I would like to draw attention to the link between certain parenting styles and bullying. Here’s the cold, hard truth: The vast majority of kids who bully do so for reasons having to do with their home life; either they bully in order to satisfy feelings that are missing at home; they bully to relieve stress, anxiety, and anger stemming from home; or they bully because it’s what they have observed and learned at home.

Although intellectually, parents can comprehend that words, behaviour, and actions have a huge influence on their kids, many have difficulty in objectively assessing their own parenting styles and techniques.

Generations of patterns, cultural traditions and expectations, and the difficulty that comes with self-awareness and fear of loss of parental authorities, further complicate the issue.

Without any judgement whatsoever, I ask you, parents to be open to the list below, to acknowledge the potential consequences these four actions or inactions might have, and to ask yourself the hard question: is it possible that your parenting style might be responsible for the fact that your child is a bully or might become one in the not too distant future?

1. Neglected child with occupied parents

This parenting inattention is one that often causes kids to turn to bullying in order to fill a void. Bullies often bully so they can get attention and validation from their peers, since they aren’t getting it from the people in their life that matter most, their parents.

Afraid of becoming victim themselves, and wanting to fit in, many bystanders turn into bullies and in the process, validate each other’s actions, making them feel empowered, and reinforcing the behaviour over time.

If you don’t spend enough quality time with your child, make a change. It’s that simple.

Even short amounts of time can be made to count more by really connecting with your child.

Internet-free family dinners or breakfasts are an easy way to start. Make a connection with encouragement, validation, and show your unconditional love first before judging them every time when coming together.

2. Name-calling, insults, gossiping is bullying

Name-calling, insulting others, and gossiping are all behaviours considered as forms of bullying.

When you participate in these actions yourself, you are bullying the person at the receiving end, and in so doing, teach your child to do the same.

What you say to your partner, what your partner says to you, how you talk about your friends, peers and family members, and what you call your child all make an enormous, long-lasting impact on him or her.

Learn to be more aware of what words you choose and check your impulse to splurge everything out in an instant. Even better, learn to communicate your feelings in an effective and respectful way to the person you are unhappy with.

3. Hitting and spanking is violent behaviour

This is a parenting decision that is often cultural in nature and passed down from generations.

While it may be really difficult to change the way you think about something that’s been drilled into you for decades, the invitation is for parents to explore the long-term consequences of spanking and adopt other more effective means of non-violence and gentle discipline.

When spanking and caning are the only ways to discipline our kids at home, it creates a huge amount of anxiety and results in humiliation for the child.

It’s almost as if they have the on-going threat of being hit, hanging over their heads at all times.

Sure you could argue that they wouldn’t have to worry if they just behaved, but kids will make mistakes. It’s what happens to them as part of the growing up process.

If they don’t feel safe at home, that stress too often manifests itself as bullying as they do not have an effective outlet for their feelings.

Additionally, you are teaching your kids that threatening to hit and hitting are acceptable means of punishing someone who has angered you or done something that you don’t like.

Kids model their behaviour directly after the behaviour of their parents. Kids who are spanked at home are much more likely to hit other kids than children who are not. A violent parent begets violent kids.

4. Expressing anger and rage

Your child’s feelings are directly influenced by yours. Ever notice that when you’re anxious your child often feels anxious too? Or when you’re excited your child often feels excited?

While this connection may diminish as kids become teens, it’s very present during the early years.

Not only will your child unconsciously absorb feelings of anger, but how you choose to handle your anger teaches your child how they will handle anger in the future.

Yelling, cursing, gesturing and acting aggressively when confronted with a frustrating situation sends the direct message to your child that it’s okay to respond in those ways as well when angry.

Find out how you can better cope with stress and learn to express your anger more constructively and in a healthier manner. Learn effective communication skills and choose when to walk away.

If the situation isn’t really important, like a driver jumping queue in front of you, just let it go. It’s important that your child know that walking away and ignoring the situation can be an effective and acceptable option.

If you’re angry at a friend or family member, teach your child that effective communication skills and talking about your feelings is the best way. Lead by example.

Bullies are not born, they are raised.

In conclusion, violent parents make violent kids.

Many studies confirm an association between harsh (punitive) parenting styles and a child’s likelihood of becoming a bully or being bullied.

Some work also points to a more surprising association — permissive or neglectful parenting creates bullies, too.

The University of Washington conducted a retrospective study of 419 college students and found that parental authoritativeness (firm and gentle approach)— in which parents are warm and caring but set specific rules for the sake of their child’s safety — lowered a child’s risk of being bullied.

Both permissive and authoritarian (harsh) parenting styles, on the other hand, were positively correlated with bullying other kids.

A 2012 study also pointed to lackadaisical parenting as a problem.

Researchers investigated online bullying in a sample of college students and found that those with permissive parents engaged in more bullying behaviour than participants with authoritarian and authoritative parents.

Neglectful parenting was associated with the most bullying.

Most research on parents’ influence on bullying, however, has focused on harsh, punitive parenting styles — in which the parents are essentially modelling bullying behaviour for their children.

In a sample of 2,060 Spanish high school students on the subject of bullying and parenting styles, results indicated that abusive discipline increased teenagers’ risk of abusing peers or being abused by them.

Taken together, most studies indicate that the best parenting style falls in the middle of the spectrum.

Indeed, various studies have shown that a protective factor against being bullied or becoming a bully is having parents who are facilitative i.e. warm and responsive, to their children and who encourage appropriate levels of autonomy (rather than being either controlling or overly permissive).

The bottom line? If you do not wish to raise a bully, do not bully your own kids.

A gentle and firm (authoritative) parenting style, on the other hand, is protective against so many negative psychological outcomes that people who wish to become better parents should take classes on how to be more gentle and firm (authoritative) with their children.
