In Cambodia, fears tarantula may go off the menu

by AFP Relaxnews
Jim Paull

Nooooooo

SKUN: While a plate piled high with hairy, palm-sized tarantulas is the stuff of nightmares for some, these garlic fried spiders are a coveted treat in Cambodia, where the only fear is that they may soon vanish due to deforestation and unchecked hunting.

Taking a bite out of the plump arachnids has become a popular photo-op for squealing tourists who pass through Skun, the central Cambodian town nicknamed “Spiderville” for its massive market of creepy crawlers.

But the bulk of the clientele are locals who are there to load up on a traditional snack known as “aping” that vendors say is becoming scarce — and more expensive — as rapid development wipes out jungle habitats.

“Aping are famous in Cambodia but now they are not abundant, they have become rare,” Chea Voeun, a tarantula vendor, told AFP from her stall where she sells other fried insects including crickets and scorpions.

Voeun, who has been selling the delicacy for 20 years, used to source the spiders from nearby forests, where hunters dug them out of burrows dotting the jungle floor.

But those trees have since been razed for cashew nut plantations, forcing Voeun and other vendors to rely on middlemen to procure the spiders, which are harvested from faraway forested provinces.

That has jacked up the price of the tarantulas to US$1 a piece, a nearly tenfold spike over the past decade.

For now the price surge is helping line the pockets of vendors who can unload several hundred spiders a day, but they fear that stocks are running low and will kill their businesses in the long-term.

“When the big forests disappear, these spiders will no longer exist,” said seller Lou Srey Sros, as tourists snapped pictures of children playing with the eight-legged creatures.

Locals say the spiders, whose taste has been compared to crab, are best prepared simply: dipped in salt and garlic and then tossed into a pan of sizzling oil.

Surviving famine

Tarantulas have been part of the Cambodian diet for generations, prized for their purported medicinal qualities.

But they are believed to have cemented their place on the Cambodian palate during the brutal years under the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s.

The Maoist regime forced millions of Cambodians out of the cities and was ultimately responsible for murdering, overworking and starving to death nearly a quarter of the population in its drive to create an agrarian utopia.

Famine pushed many to forage for any sustenance they could find, eating everything from rats to lizards and tarantulas.

While the Khmer Rouge’s devastating rule came to an end in 1979, spiders stayed on the menu.

But the jungles which are home to them are now rapidly disappearing.

Cambodia has one of the fastest deforestation rates in the world, with huge swaths of forest cleared for rubber plantations and timber.

The Southeast Asian country has lost 20% of its forest cover since 1990, according to the conservation NGO Fauna and Flora International (FFI).

It is not just habitat loss but over-harvesting to meet a high demand that is driving the spiders out of existence, said Tom Gray, director of Science and Global Development for Wildlife Alliance.

“Across Southeast Asia it is unsustainable hunting in our forests rather than direct habitat loss which is causing the biggest impacts on biodiversity,” he told AFP.

The tourist frenzy has helped fuel the tarantula trade, with busloads of travellers stopping in Skun to taste the unusual snack.

“It just makes me a little bit swimmy because that was not what I would eat at home but I am here so it’s time to try them,” Australian tourist Elisabeth Dark said after taking a bite of a spider leg.

But for many Cambodians, the only fear factor is that the treat will soon run out.

“The next generations may not know about them because these beasts have become so rare, not like before,” lamented vendor Lou Srey Sros.

“As more people clear (forests) to plant cashew nut trees, they will be gone.”

Etihad’s Insane First Class Lounge in Abu Dhabi (AUH)

by The Points Guy
Jim Paull

Nice

Etihad’s First Class lounge at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is one of the most luxurious lounges around, and definitely one of my favorites. I stopped in to check it out before hopping on the A380 to try the first-class Apartment on a recent trip from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to New York (JFK).

This is no typical airline lounge — you know, those with cheese cubes and generic office furniture. Glitz and glamour are the name of the game here — you see that right away when you pass under a giant sparking chandelier as you walk in.

The space features a hair salon where you can get a trim, a spa where you can pamper yourself with body, nail or facial treatments (each guest gets a FREE massage upon entry, and mine was fantastic) and even a gym where you can break a sweat before a long flight. Afterwards, you can take a hot shower — and yep, they pass the TPG shower test. There’s even a nap room where you can catch some shut eye before your flight.

If you’re hungry, there’s a great spread of food for you to choose from. The lounge has everything — there are healthy items like fresh fruit and salads, delectable desserts or hot plates for breakfast (I indulged in the savory eggs Benedict), lunch and dinner. Even though I was there in the morning for breakfast, I had to have a glass of champagne, too. The list of beer, wine and spirits is expansive.

The lounge even features a cigar room, where I was able to puff away on a special cigar made for the UAE, the Bolivar Emirati.

Although I don’t normally travel with children, I noticed the lounge was family-friendly. Anyone with kids can send them off to the colorful and enticing children’s playroom filled with games and toys.

But not just anyone can get into this exclusive lounge. You’ll have to be flying Etihad’s first class to gain access to the lounge, or have Etihad Guest Platinum status (or top-tier status with select partner airlines) to get in. You can also pay to get in, but it’s not cheap.

Here are all the details on how who can get in:

  • Passengers departing Abu Dhabi on a first class Etihad flight
  • Passengers arriving in first class and continuing in business class
  • Passengers holding Etihad Guest Platinum Status (and one guest)
  • Passengers (and one guest) in the following Etihad Airways Partner loyalty programs with top-tier status: Alitalia (Mille Miglia – Freccia Alata Plus Club), Jet Airways (JetPrivilege – Platinum), Air Serbia (fully integrated into Etihad Guest), Air Seychelles (fully integrated into Etihad Guest)
  • If you want to pay using miles or cash, rates are below:

Use Chicken Feet for The Richest Possible Stock

by Claire Lower on Skillet, shared by Claire Lower to Lifehacker

A good chicken stock is more than chicken-flavored water. Though you should aim for your stock to be flavorful, a good one should also be rich and mouth-coating, with a body that just won’t quit. This, my friends, is why you should make your stock with chicken feet.

The New Trailer for "Britain’s Best Home Cook" Makes Mary Berry Look More Intimidating than Gordon Ramsay — Food TV

by Elizabeth Licata
Jim Paull

On liat

My favorite thing about reality TV is imagining what I would do if I were on it. What would I cook? What funny things would I say back to the judges? I do that for all shows, regardless of how absurd my participation would be, like Project Runway, The Voice, and America's Next Top Model. I am convinced I would be sensational on Nailed It.

But I just saw the trailer for Britain's Best Home Cook on the BBC, and I don't think I could handle the pressure of being judged by Mary Berry.

How Pepperoni Got Someone Banned From Fairmont Hotel For 18 years?

by John Ollila
Jim Paull

hahahahaha

Fairmont Empress in Victoria, Brother’s Pepperoni and seagulls. I couldn’t stopped laughing when I read this Nick’s story what had happened back in 2001 that got him banned from the hotel for 18 years.

Brothers Pepperoni

This was just very unfortunate turn of events and these pepperoni loving seagulls must have made quite a mess inside the room. It didn’t help that Nick managed to knock off the hotel power too when trying to dry his shoe.

Here’s what Nick posted on Facebook (access here):

Brothers Pepperoni Fairmont

I officially applied to be allowed to stay at the empress hotel again. Here is my letter. Waiting for the reply. 18 years is a long time…..Fairmont Empress

28 March 2018

Dear Empress Hotel:
This may seem like and unusual request, but I write to you today, seeking a “pardon”.

17 Years ago a string of unfortunate events led to my being banned from your hotel. I would like to explain the incident……

In 2001, I had recently joined my current employer, xxxxxxxxx and I was also in the Canadian Naval Reserve. xxxxxxxxx was hosting a customer conference at the Empress and it was my first event with the company.

I told my Navy buddies that I was coming out West and I was asked to bring “Brother’s Pepperoni” from Halifax. It is a local delicacy. Because this was the Navy we were talking about, I brought enough for a ship. In a hurry, I had completely filled a suitcase with pepperoni for my friends. Some of it was wrapped in plastic, some in brown paper. I took whatever Brothers would sell me.

This is the bag that the airline misplaced.

The bag reappeared the next day. I knew that the pepperoni would still be “good”. It had only been at room temperature for a short time. It would, however, be quite some time before I could turn it over to my friends.

Just to be safe, I decided that I should keep it cool.

My room was a nice, big, front-facing room on the fourth floor. It was well appointed, but it did not have a refrigerator. It was April, the air was chilly. An easy way to keep all of this food cool would be just to keep it next to an open window. I lifted one of the sashes and spread the packages of pepperoni out on the table and window sill. Then, I went for a walk…..for about 4 or 5 hours.

When I had covered enough ground, I returned to the hotel. I remember walking down the long hall and opening the door to my room to find an entire flock of seagulls in my room. I didn’t have time to count, but there must have been 40 of them and they had been in my room, eating pepperoni for a long time.

In case you were wondering, Brothers’ TNT Pepperoni does NASTY things to a seagull’s digestive system. As you would expect, the room was covered in seagull crap. What I did not realize until then was that Seagulls also drool. Especially when they eat pepperoni.

I’m sure you have an image in your head. Now remember that I have just walked into the room and startled all of these birds. They immediately started flying around and crashing into things as they desperately tried to leave the room through the small opening by which they had entered.

Less composed seagulls are attempting to leave through the other CLOSED windows. The result was a tornado of seagull excrement, feathers, pepperoni chunks and fairly large birds whipping around the room. The lamps were falling. The curtains were trashed. The coffee tray was just disgusting.

I waded through the birds and opened the remaining windows. Most of the gulls left immediately. One tried to re-enter the room to grab another piece of pepperoni and in my agitated state, I took off one of my shoes and threw it at him.

Both the gull and the shoe went out the window.

By this time, I was down to one gull left in the room, but it was a big one, and it didn’t want to leave.

As I chased it, it ran around the room with a big hunk of pepperoni in its gob.

In a moment of clarity, I grabbed a bath-towel and jumped it. It stated to freak-out so I wrapped it in the towel and threw it out of the window.

I had forgotten that Seagulls cannot fly when they are wrapped in a towel.

This is all happening fairly quickly and this is mid-afternoon. The Empress hosts a very famous and very popular “High Tea”. I suspect this is where the large group of tourists was heading when they were struck by first my shoe, then a bound-up seagull (the seagull was unharmed, by the way).

Let’s go back to my little housekeeping issue. The room was BAD. There was a lot of damage.

I was new to my company and I was really trying to make a good impression at this important event. I decided that I would carry on for now and handle this whole thing later. I then realized that I had only a few minutes before an important dinner and that I only had one shoe.

I made my way to one of the side doors and recovered both the shoe and the towel that were laying in some wet soil bear the walking path. The shoe was a mess. I took it back to the room. By this time, I had close the windows and the air was becoming quite ripe with the smell of digested pepperoni and fish.

I went into the washroom and rinsed the mud off of my shoe. It cleaned-up nicely, but now I had one wet, dark shoe, and one dry, light coloured shoe.

In retrospect, I should have just wet the dry shoe. Instead, I choose to dry the wet shoe using the little hairdryer. It was actually doing quite well. I had the hairdryer jammed in there and the shoe was drying quite nicely. Then, the phone rang.

I walked into the next room to answer it and the power goes off. It turns-out that the hairdryer had vibrated free of the shoe and fallen into the sink full of water and the GFI didn’t seem be 100% functional. I don’t know how much of the hotel’s power I knocked-out, but at that point I decided I needed help.

I called the front desk and asked for someone to come help me clean-up a mess. I can still remember the look on the lady’s face when she opened the door. I had absolutely no Idea what to tell her, so I just said “I’m sorry” and I went to dinner. When I came back, my things had been moved to a much smaller room.

I thought that was the end of it all until I was told that my company had received a letter banning me from the Empress. A ban that I have respected for almost 18 years.

I have matured and I admit responsibility for my actions. I come to you, hat-in-hand to apologise for the damage I had indirectly come to cause and to ask you reconsider my lifetime ban from the property.

I hope that you will see fit to either grant me a pardon, or consider my 18 year away from the empress as “time served”.

Thank you very much for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Nick Burchill

**Update 31 March**

After reviewing my application for a pardon with the Empress staff; Ryan, the manager has notified me verbally that I will once again be welcome as a guest. I bet it was the pound of Brothers Pepperoni that I gave them as a peace offering that did the trick.

Conclusion

I guess that I need to make my way down to Victoria when I am in British Columbia and Vancouver next time to check out this Fairmont hotel and the city itself.

Well. I have had ant attack few times when I have had food on the table but never thought that seagulls could make such a mess and love pepperoni!

REPORT: Super typhoon may flood 1/3 of central Tokyo

by AFP

TOKYO: One third of central Tokyo could be left under water and nearly four million people affected if a super typhoon strikes the capital causing storm surges, a new study from local authorities has warned.

The Tokyo metropolitan government unveiled its first estimate of the Japanese capital’s vulnerability to damage from typhoon-related high tidal waves Friday, as risks of storm damage continue to increase globally.

According to the report, 212 square kilometres, or one third of the capital’s central area, could be inundated to a maximum depth of 10 metres if a super typhoon creates high tidal waves.

A severe event of this type would be estimated to affect as many as 3.95 million people in the city, flooding business and entertainment districts as well as major railway stations, the local government said.

Tokyo has a population of 13.7 million people.

In particular, Tokyo’s eastern zone near Arakawa river would be flooded for more than a week if rising tidal waves at Tokyo Port break through river levees.

Based on the estimate, the Tokyo government said it plans to update evacuation measures and review how it sends warning messages to local residents.

Big storms regularly hit the Japanese archipelago, triggering landslides and floods that have often led to sizable casualties.

Looking good.

Of all the ways I've flavored kombucha since I first started brewing it last year, I've been coming back to mango again and again. It has a mellow sweetness that's just the right partner for fizzy kombucha's punchy tang.

But, to be honest, if I had seen this recipe the first time I made kombucha, there's a good chance I would have thought it was too tricky or advanced. And if you happen to be thinking the same thing right now, let me assure you that it's not the case at all. This just-sweet-enough kombucha with a tropical twist is just as doable for first-time brewers as it is for someone who's been at it for years.

Eco Hotel Concept or Chain Beach Resort For Your Vacation? Case: Alila Boutique Ubud, Bali

by Sebastian Powell
Jim Paull

Haha

During my trip to Bali last week I decided to visit a couple hotels off the beaten path of the busy beaches to discover a different style of accommodation as alternative to large resort hotels, staying (among others) at the Alila Boutique Hotel in Ubud.

There were a couple different booking channels available for this hotel which I’ll illustrate in this article as well as looking into which loyalty aspects could still come into play with such a booking.

I was in Bali for a bit over a week and simply can’t stay at beach resorts all the time even if some properties such as the Grand Hyatt Bali in Nusa Dua have very great strips of sand and a nice high tide for both swimming and surfing.

During the middle of my stay I decided to go inland to Ubud to check out some hotels there including the soon to be opened Element Hotel, the Shtala Tribute Collection, Mandapa Ritz Carlton Reserve and one property had peeked my interest for quite some time now, the Alila Ubud Boutique Hotel.

On previous visits to Bali it never worked out to go up to Ubud or the rates have been extremely high, however last week was a slow period where I had plenty of time on my hands and the rates for the Alila were pretty low.

I discovered several options to book

  • Through the hotel website where they have special offers of ~10% off but a slightly higher head rate
  • Through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Booking Portal with an even higher rat but US$25 F&B credit as well as some VIP benefits (see screenshot below) or
  • Through Orbitz where the rate was lowest, a new 15% off code was available and where I am Orbitz Platinum VIP (fancy name for very little benefit at most hotels) and the Alila is actually a VIP Hotel.

I wasn’t sure how the ‘Best Available Rate’ Guarantee would work out and since it was a same day booking I wasn’t willing to gamble on it. I decided to go for Orbitz, one of my favorite hotel booking channels due to the always available 15% codes and great ‘insider prices’ as they call them:

This price is without the 15% discount and without taxes which essentially makes it a wash. I was surprised to see prices this low for a five star resort that I looked at a few times previously and that was always pretty pricey so I decided to reserve one night to try this hotel out, especially given the great reviews it has on Tripadvisor and on Orbitz as well. I was also able to collect another $20 in Orbucks for my next Orbitz booking.

I shouldn’t be disappointed as the following pictures probably show:

Terrace Tree Villa Bedroom

The monkeys having some fun with my pillows on the terrace:

Breakfast at this resort is included for all guests (each rate):

The award winning infinity swimming pool (top 50 in the world):

You can actually swim very close to the rice terraces:

What I liked about the Alila was that it tries to follow a sustainable model where they bottle their own water and grow some of the produce used at the restaurants on site which is what provides the basis for the ‘eco hotel’ concept. The breakfast was excellent and there is a small complimentary daily tea time by the pool.

Most of all: It’s unpretentious and considering the quality of the accommodations a steal as far as the price is concerned. In high season the price obviously goes up but considering the Villa goes for a low $400 amount I tried to compare it to other resorts of the same caliber and comparable rooms there would go for at lest double. The prices for the restaurant and room service are high for Bali but not as high as you’d expect it for a Hideaway style hotel far away from any other option to dine. It’s reasonable. The same goes for the Spa.

I had a look at the villa in which I stayed, the spacious Deluxe Rooms as well as the basic Superior Rooms which are a bit small but have a nice view as they’re located in the upper floors. I personally recommend to book at least the Deluxe Room that also features and outside bathroom with shower and tub.

Conclusion

It obviously depends on what you like but for a break from the hustle and bustle of beach side resorts and to get some relaxation as well as fresh air I couldn’t imagine a better place. This property also features just 75 rooms which makes it very serene. All the Nusa Dua beach hotels I stayed at last week were pretty much a zoo, packed with people. The Alila also provides bikes as well as activities such as Yoga for those guests who are interested in it.

An interesting part which I didn’t even realize is that Alila Hotels are also part of the GHA Discoveries program so members could receive status benefits there when booking direct. This doesn’t apply to me as I lost my GHA Black status last year but I could get it again. All in all certainly a great value and O’m looking forward to stay here again in the late summer.
