Save Time Using Electronic Forms and Precedents

by Alex McNeur

Practitioners know to take advantage of forms and precedents when drafting legal documents. We have a great collection of precedents in print, but the main drawback to print is having to spend time retyping the content.  To save you time, the library subscribes to some excellent tools that allow you to start with an electronic version of a precedent and easily modify it to meet your client’s needs.

CLE Online, available in all of our locations, has hundreds of forms and precedents in their Precedents Collection, covering a broad range of practice areas.  Simply do a search to find a precedent quickly and download a Word version to modify and save it. There’s also a wonderful document builder feature for Family Law Agreements and Wills Precedents. You can, for example, select clauses for a separation agreement and build a complete document.  Meghan, our Legal Community Liason, and Rebecca, a librarian, have created a couple of excellent videos on how to use Document Builder. Imagining  Prince Charming as the client, Rebecca and Meghan show you how easy it is to create a marriage agreement and a will, even for an individual with such unique circumstances.

The library has also recently subscribed to the online version of O’Brien’s Encyclopedia of Forms (available in all locations). Those familiar with the print will know that O’Brien’s is a comprehensive collection of forms and precedents covering a wide array of subject areas. Now you can easily customize a Word version of forms for Wills and Trusts, Labour Relations and Employment, Corporations, Leases, Computers and Information Technology, Municipal Corporations and Commercial  contracts.

Our forms and precedents print materials are among the most highly used items in the library. With customizable electronic versions of precedents from trusted sources, we’ll save you even more time when it comes to drafting legal documents.
