Canadian Hacker School Reopens, Makes Peace With Government

by Klint Finley
The Toronto-based Bitmaker Labs recently ran afoul of an Ontario law regulating vocational schools. Pending an investigation by the provincial government, the company decided to suspend its $9,000 program, leaving its 42 current students hanging. Fortunately for Bitmaker Labs and its students, the company announced last week that it has received an exemption from the regulation and will resume teaching classes.

Here Are The Names Microsoft Rejected Before Settling On 'Xbox'

by Steven Tweedie

Original Microsoft Xbox

Microsoft's first gaming console, the Xbox, could have easily been called the WEP,  the 11-X, the MARZ, or even FACE, to name a few.

In an interview with Edge, Xbox engineer Seamus Blackley revealed that a fierce back-and-forth took place between the engineers and the so-called Microsoft "naming guys."

“First, there were our code names, which were WEP — ‘Windows Entertainment Project’ — designed to make Microsoft executives comfortable, Midway — ‘Midway between a PC and a console or ‘Battle of Midway’ — you decide — and DirectX Box, which was shortened to xbox in email very early on.”

Once the time for code names was over, and a marketable name needed to be chosen, the Xbox name wasn't even on the table, due to legal reasons.

But the engineering team held strong, Blackley said, weathering the slew of acronyms offered up as alternatives, and the "Xbox" name was finally decided upon (and not X-Box, xBox, XboX, Xbox, or X-box).

If you're interested in seeing all the possible names, we've included Edge's complete list of suggested Xbox names below.

- MAX (Microsoft Action Experience)
- AIO (All In One)

How To Say 'Beer' In Every Language While You're Traveling Across Europe [MAP]

by Megan Willett

There's one word you need to know when traveling abroad: Beer.

Reddit user T-Other1 helpfully posted a map created by The Drey onto /r/linguisitcs that shows the various words for beer across Europe.

It's also broken down by common pronunciation, so saying "Beer," Ale, "Pivo," or "Cerveza" will help you get by almost anywhere.

Anywhere, that is, unless you're traveling in one of the outliers — sör, ludi, and jough will work in Hungary, Georgia, and the UK respectively.

12 Southern Chefs Who You Should Pay Attention To Instead Of Paula Deen

by Megan Willett

Virginia Willis chef

The Paula Deen racism scandal seems to have no expiration date.

Ever since the release of a deposition in which the former Food Network star acknowledged using racist epithets, controversy has swelled.

Deen had a very public breakdown on the TODAY show, companies distanced themselves from her brand, and she recently split from longtime agent Barry Weiner.

Given the fallout, it's unlikely the inventor of deep-fried lasagna will make a comeback.

Thankfully, there's a new generation of Southern chefs on the rise, and they don't need a deep fryer to make fantastic food. Sarah McSimmons, an acclaimed Southern chef and founder of New York's City Grit supper club, helped us find 12 promising candidates who could surpass Paula Deen's fame in the Southern cooking arena.

Jeremiah Langhorne

Restaurant: McCrady's Restaurant, Charleston, SC

Jeremiah Langhorne is the executive chef of McCrady's Restaurant in Charleston, SC — a far cry from his first job as a pizza deliveryman in Charlottesville, VA.

Inspired by the staff at that little Italian restaurant, he began cooking and even traveled to famed-restaurant Noma in Denmark to complete a two-month stage.

He describes his food at McCrady's as "modern Southern cuisine with indigenous ingredients" that he either grows or forages.

Kelly English

Restaurant: Restaurant Iris, Memphis, TN

Kelly English traveled from Missouri to Memphis and opened Restaurant Iris in 2008.

Since then, English has won numerous awards and accolades. He has appeared on Food Network's "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" as well as been a James Beard Award Semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast in 2010.

His food is French-Creole and New Orleans-inspired, with local and seasonal ingredients.

Ashley Christensen

Restaurant: Ashley Christensen Restaurants, Raleigh, NC

After working at Raleigh's top kitchens, Ashley opened Poole's Diner in 2007 with a chalkboard menu of comfort-food made with locally grown, seasonal ingredients.

Now six years later, she has three other ventures including Chuck's, Beasley's Chicken + Honey, and Fox Liquor Bar, all relying on Southern classics with her French technique.

In 2008, Bon Appétit named her one of its "Female Chefs of the Next Generation" and Christensen is also a three-time James Beard semi-finalist for "Best Chef: Southeast."

The Tracking Solutions That Could Lead An Explosion In Mobile Marketing

by Josh Luger

The effectiveness of any advertising campaign rests on a brand's ability to effectively deliver their message to a target audience.

As advertisers look to follow consumers across screen, brands need to know how and on what devices target audiences are consuming content. They need to track and measure a single individual’s responses to ads across multiple screens and attribute any results — such as conversions — to the appropriate ad placement.

The technical hurdles are formidable.

In a new report from BI Intelligence, we take stock of cross-screen marketing, digging into the measurement and analytics problem, and offer a side-by-side comparison of the different mobile tracking technologies. We also analyze how audiences are becoming increasingly screen agnostic and examine how cross-screen advertising can be made effective.

Below are some of the leading mobile tracking solutions (click to expand):

slide1 58

slide2 21

Cookies enable advertisers and publishers to track user activity as they move across the desktop Internet and target them with relevant ads, but they are the most contested area of cross-screen tracking and don't migrate to model. Algorithmic models can be used in conjunction with cookies, or without them. Powerful algorithms might profile specific users based solely on their actions and digital profile as they move across certain apps or mobile website, and give them with a unique device fingerprint on the server side. However, since the method is statistical, it can make errors. The various Mobile device ID schemes create a device-specific number that will identify your phone wherever it goes, across apps, mobile browsers, etc.

It's clear that intermediaries and solutions providers are in a race to provide the technical solutions that will allow marketers to integrate mobile seamlessly into cross-screen campaigns and properly attribute the results achieved. As these solutions develop and improve, they will fuel the already rapid growth of cross-screen marketing.

Scientists Discover Mysterious Radio Blasts From Billions Of Light-Years Away

by Nola Taylor Redd

galaxy explosion

Powerful and puzzling radio blasts in other galaxies constantly explode across the night sky, a new study suggests.

A team of international astronomers has detected four explosive events, known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), above the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy.

Lasting only a few thousandths of a second, these sources send powerful signals across the universe, traveling billions of light-years through space.

"These bursts gave off more energy in a millisecond than the sun does in 300,000 years," said principal investigator Dan Thornton of the University of Manchester in England. [Slideshow: History & Structure of the Universe Explained]

Mysterious origins

Studying observations by the CSIRO Parkes radio telescope in Australia, Thornton and his team spotted four new point sources across the sky. The bursts ranged from 5.5 to 10 billion light-years away, meaning it took the light from some of them 10 billion years to reach Earth. (The Big Bang that created our universe occurred 13.8 billion years ago.).

These newfound objects allowed the researchers to calculate that an FRB should occur once every 10 seconds.

After the astronomers verified that the objects weren't Earth-based, they questioned whether the new signals came from inside or outside the Milky Way. To do so, they studied how the radio waves were affected by the material they pass through — a technique that could allow these new objects to shed light on the components of space.

As radio waves travel in space, they are stretched and slowed by the ionized material through which they move. Using models, the team concluded that the FRBs traveled billions of light-years — much farther than the edge of Earth's galaxy.

"These are extragalactic in origin — not from the Milky Way — but the source is likely located in another galaxy," Thornton said.

Although the explosions are brief, the astronomers can pinpoint the bursts' locations pretty accurately.

"They are so bright and narrow that we can limit the size of the emission region at the source to just a few hundred kilometers," Thornton said.

No corresponding object could be observed in optical, gamma or X-ray wavelengths, so the explosions' origins remain unknown to scientists.

"Other variable extragalactic radio sources vary on timescales of days to months," Thornton said. "FRBs happen in just a few milliseconds."

Possible sources include intersecting magnetic fields from two neutron stars, extremely dense city-size bodies packing the mass of the sun. A special kind of supernova orbited by a neutron star could potentially produce radio bursts as the star's magnetic field interacts with the explosion of the supernova, though such combinations would be rare, researchers said.

"Our favorite explanation is a giant burst from a magnetar, a highly magnetized type of neutron star," Thornton said.

These bursts of radiation can produce an enormous amount of energy, similar to that seen in the FRBs.

Hard to spot

Although frequent, an FRB's short signal duration makes it difficult to spot.

"The problem with searching for FRBs is that we don't know where or when they will go off," Thornton said.

A single fast radio burst was detected in 2007, leaving scientists puzzled about its source, and even its existence. For the last four years, Thornton and his team have used the High Time Resolution Survey to search for similar bursts. Powered by the 210-foot (64 meters) CSIRO Parkes radio telescope, the survey was designed to search above and below the plane of the Milky Way for objects such as rotating neutron stars known as pulsars.

The Parkes telescope essentially "stares" at a region of the sky for a set amount of time, making it ideal to capture FRBs.

"At some point, one will go off in the field of view of the telescope," Thornton said.

The four new sources appeared above the plane of the galaxy. Follow-up observations, performed approximately a year after the FRBs were first spotted, looked at whether the objects continued to produce emission, but the signals appear to be nonrepeating.

"It is, of course, possible that repetitions were missed, particularly if they happened soon after the original FRB," Thornton said.

"Efforts are ongoing at the moment to detect FRBs in close to real time, such that they can be followed up quickly," he added. Ideally, such follow-up observations would be performed at a multitude of wavelengths, providing further insight into what drives these powerful explosions.

The research, along with a companion Perspectives article by James Cordes of Cornell University in New York, was published online Thursday (July 4) in the journal Science.

9 Myths That Young People Shouldn't Believe About Their Careers

by Alden Wicker

young women girls shopping

Clinical psychologist Dr. Meg Jay doesn't subscribe to the theory that your 20s are a throwaway time to just have fun and decide what you want to be when you grow up.

While popular media often depicts 20-somethings as aimless wanderers lounging in extended adolescence, the truth, according to Jay, is that your 20s are your defining decade.

In fact, that's the title of her new book,"The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter—and How to Make the Most of Them Now" and the inspiration for her TED talk, which proclaim that 30 is not the new 20, stressing the importance of that crucial time period post-college, especially when it comes to your career.

We got Jay on the phone to get her advice on nine of the most common myths about your 20s, and what you should do instead. If you've ever considered bailing on your job or your "temporary" barista job has stretched to three years, you're going to want to hear this.

Myth 1: Your twenties don't count.

Despite their best efforts, 20-somethings have been hindered by the recession and difficult economic climate. From saving money to borrowing money, Gen Y lags behind their parents and grandparents. But that doesn't mean they get to take a time out.

“Your 20s are the time to make some moves,” Jay says. “It's a unique, potentially transformative time. It ends up being more important than it feels.”

If you're putting off starting your life ... don't. It's time to start making deliberate choices in your job, your city and even your love life to set yourself up for the life you want in your thirties. As Jay said to one young woman in her book who said that her choices before age 30 were just practice: "Consider what part you're rehearsing to play."

Myth 2: You need to know exactly what you want to do.

Too many 20-somethings think they need to figure out what they want to be when they grow up before landing an actual job. Instead, says Jay, your 20s are the ideal decade to build what she calls "identity capital"—little bits of experience you collect that coalesce into a solid identity over time.

For example, rather than holding out for your absolute dream job, it's O.K. to take a job that isn’t ideal, as long as there's something about the position that could lead to another, better opportunity down the road. It's also fine if it's something a little unconventional. “I always tell my clients to take the job that's going to make people lean forward and say, ‘Tell me about that!’” she says.

Long before becoming a successful psychologist, Jay was an Outward Bound instructor, which her future interviewers found cool. “I was actually the only person in my graduate school class at Berkeley who didn't go to an Ivy for undergrad, but with Outward Bound in my pocket, I didn't need the Ivy distinction," she says.

She too, went through a 20-something period of being "underemployed," but made a point of upping her identity capital by choosing such an interesting part-time gig. If you need to make ends meet as a nanny or barista for a time, fine, but also try to find a way to get more high-profile experiences on your résumé. As she writes in her book, no one will start off an interview with, "So tell me about being a nanny."

Myth 3: You can do anything you want.

Before you get stars in your eyes, you should be realistic about your skills and goals. “Sometimes people get in their 20s and hear, ‘Oh my God, you can do anything you want in the whole wide world!’” Jay says. “That's overwhelming, and it's not true."

In her book, she discusses psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas' idea of "unthought knowns"—things we know about ourselves but forget or suppress, like a childhood dream of working with animals or an aptitude for physics that was abandoned post–high school. To keep from being overwhelmed by "endless" possibilities, put together a handful of concrete plans you could pursue, based on your unthought knowns.

The 10 Biggest Advertisers In America, Ranked By Dollars Spent Annually

by Jim Edwards

Mcdonald's girl mccafe airport

Walmart, America's biggest employer, is merely the 10th biggest advertiser in the U.S. according to data gathered by Kantar and supplied to Ad Age.

Some of the usual suspects have also made the top 10 — McDonald's, Macy's and T-Mobile for instance.

But there are a few big spenders who didn't make the cut.

Apple was merely the 12th biggest spender, at $662 million. Samsung spent $597 million, and came at No. 15 in the ranking.

10. Walmart: $690 million. Walmart is a nimble juggernaut, and seemingly nothing can stop it. It most recently severed ties to Paula Deen to maintain its squeaky clean brand image.

9. Macy's: $762 million. A huge portion of the department store's branding is around entertainment, such as Macy's July 4 fireworks in New York.

8. T-Mobile: $773 million. The wireless service recently ditched the beloved T-Mobile girl in pink to hitch its wagon to the iPhone 5 and a no-contract deal for new signups.

While The Last of Us retains its position, 3DS newcomer Project X Zone did little to shake it off its pedestal, coming in at 18. It’s still a good position for the game, as it’s quick a lovely little oddity that sees character from the Namco, Sega and Capcom back catalogues clash in grid-based combat skirmishes. Film cameras are sadly a dying breed, but 3D printers are just starting their march to the mainstream consumer market. Thankfully for 35mm film devotees everywhere, the latter could ensure that analog cameras never disappear entirely. Specifically, thanks can be directed at Léo Marius, whose OpenReflex camera can be 3D printed with just over $30 worth of parts (minus the film). Marius says that all of the involved components can be printed in under 15 hours, and final assembly can be completed in about an hour. To make modifications and further iterations on his design easier, he's also made sure that all camera parts remain separate in his 3D design plans. Even better, he's promising compatibility with any glass you've got on hand...

Someone Bombed One Of The Holiest And Most Peaceful Places On Earth

by Michael Kelley

bodhy gaya

What Mecca is to Muslims and The Temple Mount is to Jews, the Bodhi tree is to Buddhists.

Located in Bodh Gaya, India, it is epicenter of the Buddhist universe – the place where Gautama Buddha (i.e. "The Awaken One") is believed to have realized the nature of the mind.

On Sunday nine explosions, occurring both inside and outside of the Mahabodhi temple complex, rocked the pilgrimage town in the northeastern province of Bihar. Two people were injured.

“There was some damage to the staircases near the Bodhi Tree, and some windowpanes were broken,” Bhikshu Chalinda, the senior monk at the temple, told The New York Times.

Witnesses said some of the bombs exploded close to the Bodhi tree, but it did not sustain any damage to the tree.

Authorities have defused several other bombs at the UNESCO World Heritage site. Investigators said the bombs were detonated with remote timers.

“It’s very unfortunate, actually there should be no need for security in a religious place,” a Dalai Lama aide told the Times Now.

The Hindustan Times reports that for years Pakistan-based, al-Qaeda-linked militants have considered Bodh Gaya as a potential target of suicide bombings.

The Times added that Sunday’s attack is believed to be a retribution for the atrocities committed by militant Buddhist monks Myanmar on Rohingya Muslims.

The Mahabodhi temple, particularly around the Bodhi tree, is one of the most peaceful places imaginable (this author has been there).

For more than a millennium Buddhists from all over the world have meditated at the site, where the Buddha is said to have "attained the unattained supreme security from bondage" (i.e. enlightenment, Nirvana) in 531 BCE.

The Pace of Modern Life

'Unfortunately, the notion of marriage which prevails ... at the present time ... regards the institution as simply a convenient arrangement or formal contract ... This disregard of the sanctity of marriage and contempt for its restrictions is one of the most alarming tendencies of the present age.' --John Harvey Kellogg, Ladies' guide in health and disease (1883)
